An important release: it's the first recorded Favorite, waxed in 1912; the only one available in the original French version; a splendid example of French vocal style before it dissolved in today's melting pot of international vocalism; and an enjoyable listening experience to boot. Albers's firm baritone is a delight, Lapeyrette and Lasalle are fine, and Ruhmann keeps things moving along. Best of all, it's a rare opportunity to hear the way Donizetti bends Parisian Grand Opera conventions to his Italianite melodic style. There's the added shock (a pleasant one) of hearing familiar favorites like "Spirito gentil" in their original form (here, "Ange si pur"). Marston has done its usual superb job of bringing fresh life to ancient 78s. --Dan Davis

There's a plethora of single-disc Caruso collections, but this one's the preferred choice for opera fans who treasure this golden- voiced epitome of Golden Age singing. It's a Greatest Hits collection to beat all Greatest Hits collections. Selections span Caruso's career, from the lyric effusions of 1906-7 to the darker-voiced later recordings, including one of his last records, the 1920 La Juive aria, "Rachel, quand du Seigneur," which he invests with a heartbreaking poignancy that hasn't been bettered. Caruso shines brightest in the Italian repertory, capturing the pathos of Vesti la Giubba, the insouciance of the Duke's Rigoletto arias, and the hero's dilemma in Celeste Aida, among much else. But everything here is wonderful--great music, great singing. --Dan Davis

Great to hear the Great Tenor.......2007-04-11

I am impressed how well these almost 100 year old recordings have been transfered to CD. Of course they aren't perfect but considering their age it is still a miracle. It is nice to hear Caruso in his prime and not on a scratchy vinyl. I would recommend this to any lover of Caruso's singing.

A childhood memory.......2006-05-28

I do not really know Opera. I am writing this review because I remember hearing Caruso's voice coming from a seventy- eight on an old Victor gramophone in my paternal grandparents house. The power and lyric quality of the voice struck me so strongly especially in 'Pagliacci'. The phrase has been with me, and comes back occasionally through all the years.
Caruso was then, and I believe still is considered at the very top of operatic singers. And it is a remarkable experience to hear so many years later , and in a stronger and clearer way sounds which one heard long ago in childhood, and have for years only lived in the mind.

This CD is an older RCA release, but still one of the best! A great introduction to Caruso.

This collection is chock full of some of opera's juiciest moments, sung by some of opera's greatest voices. Many are familiar whether you know their names: The elegant Barcarolle from Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the lazy, hazy soprano-mezzo "flower" duet from Lakme, the boastful "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, and the "Toreador Song" from Carmen sound like tunes from our subconscious by now; one could say the same about "Musetta's Waltz" and the other Bohème excerpts, as well as Figaro's rousing aria from The Barber of Seville. But the gorgeous quartet from Rigoletto's last act, as sung here by Pavarotti, Sutherland, Milnes, and Tourangeau will enchant, as well, the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor is dazzling, and if you don't know the "Sogno di Doretta" from Puccini's La Rondine, you're in for a beautiful treat. An aria from Tosca with Pavarotti will bring tears to your eyes. A truly fine anthology. --Robert Levine

Nice intro to opera.......2002-11-09

Being somewhat of a novice to opera, I found this c.d. to have a nice variety and be easy to listen to. I'm not saying it's the absolute best rendition of every song (which is pretty subjective anyway) but I actually like every piece on it -- rare for a compilation. Overall, I'd say it's great for someone who just likes listening to beautiful music and singing, as well a good jumping off point for those looking for an opera to delve more deeply into. Pretty good for kids and the opera shy as well -- nothing too harsh, screechy or challenging. My 2.5 yr old loves it.

Selection for the Ages.......2000-02-22

This is indeed a marvelous selection of beautiful Opera, both for the beginner and for the well-listened veteran. Pavarotti makes wonderful choices from the world of Opera, and brings it home to the listener. The arias are breathtaking, and are recognizable to nearly all people. This CD is perfect for the listener of any age, and the buyer of this certainly won't be disappointed!

One Of The Best.......2005-08-07

This album has got to be one of the best compilations in its genre. If you are into male opera singers, specifically tenors, then you should definitely buy this CD. Imagine their hearty expressive voices coming out of your home stereo system. It might make you cry! (in a good way)

outstanding CD and great introduction to these great works.......2000-05-12

These three are amazing and this CD gives you a great introduction to their talent. The music is soothing and relaxing. The Arias chosen for this CD are awesome, however my only complaint would be that most of them are short (2 to 3 minutes). There are few arias that are longer (more than 4 minutes). I found the short arias to be a bit distracting because I'd just start relaxing into a song and then it would be over. Notwithstanding, a great CD and definitely worth owning.

This is an excellent opera collection.......2006-05-04

If you want to get a complete opera, this CD isn't for you, but it is an excellent compilation of different opera arias from various composers, most of which are Italian. Some highlights are "Vient, Diletto" and "Ah Mes Amis".

This is a great CD of popular operatic love duets, my favorites being the last duet from Traviata and the magnificent extended duet from Tosca. I love this CD so much that I am very tempted to get to know most of the operas featured in more detail. Very enjoyable!!

Francisco de Penalosa (1470-1528). His music is most preserved in Hispanic or Portuguese manuscripts. It is reasonable to suppose that the considerable body of his music, six masses,six Magnificats,sets of Lamentations, various mass movements, Office hymns and a variety of motets date mainly from an active composing period of some twenty years in Aragonese court circle.
These motets, some with liturgical texts(for example:'Pater noster' and 'Ave regina'), others devotional like'Adoro te',extraliturgical funerary, such as 'Versa est in luctum','over-the-top' late medieval hyperbole (O Domina sanctissima), exaggerated bloodiness (Precor te), all 22 of them, have not a note of lively rejoicing. Yet, within each, even the very few that are a little dull and awkward, there is a tremendous variety.The textures and the sonorities , the mixtures of sharp declamation,soft slow chords and soaring melismas ,are varied endlessly and mixed from piece to piece within an individual motet.
This recording is recommended as an anthology to be sampled rather than always heard end to end.
The Pro Cantione Antiqua, with its all male voices, to my thinking ,is the best group possible for recording this type of music. Bruno Turner has done a superb job of pulling this all together. The singers are skilled having excellent diction, beautiful tone quality, perfect harmonic balance and proper emotional investment. The group is comprised of the following outstanding singers: Michael Chance ,Timothy Penrose(countertenors)-James Griffett, Ian Partridge (tenors)-Stephen Roberts (baritone) and Michael George, Adrian Peacock (basses).

Astonishing, moving, spectacular music.......2006-08-20

Leslie Howard has done it again: he's unveiled and championed some of Liszt's best music, his operatic fantasies and transcriptions. And Howard's repertoire here, combined with Hyperion's outstanding recording quality has made for a miraculous CD. I do not embellish my words when I say the music here is some of the richest and finest of Liszt's. Obviously, much of it is music material from other composers, but there are works here that remain clearly as originally conceived and compiled as if they were the sole products of Liszt's mind.

The first CD in this two-disc set is probably the most substantial and powerful showcase of Liszt's most complex and mature efforts with the operatic fantasy as a form. The Illustrations du Prophete from Meyerbeer's opera is an epic three movement work that propels through so many technical eventualities and musical ideas; it is exhilarating, impressive, dramatic and superb music for the piano. Although I'm not at all familiar with Meyerbeer's operas, it's still evident how successful the music becomes through the piano. Howard explains it himself how ingenius the treatment of Meyerbeer's themes are. What becomes noticeable after I began listening to it over and over is the growth and mutation that Liszt puts the themes through, so that the music is almost Liszt's own conception; it's not just borrowed from another composer to use as a basis for a fantasy. The entire three movement fantasy is 40 minutes long (!) and delivers such stirring and memorable music, it will invite repeated listenings.

The masterpiece here which surely deserves a revival today is the Fantasie and Fugue on a theme from Meyerbeer's Le Prophete, known as the "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam." This colossal and monumental work of art, again in three movements and played on two pianos, is one of the greatest and most original compositions Liszt has crafted from another composer's music material. He transforms Meyerbeer's themes to create the most electrifying, beautiful, and staggering piano work I've heard since the Sonata in B minor. The first movement is the heaviest and most breathtaking sound I've heard on two pianos. It's a fuse between Bach on steroids and Liszt on cocaine with its combination of phenomenal counterpoint and virtuosic flare; easily superior to any Busoni or Godowsky effort.

The Adagio that follows is the most tranquil and exquisite music of such angelic beauty; it moves me like only something from late Beethoven would. It's hard to believe what Liszt is capable of creating on the piano. Just previously he roared with clamor and rage in the fantasy, and now this tender and delicate adagio floats into the air with such warmth. At times the music becomes a Romantic ballade, and then all of a sudden like an introspective hymn. This is the precusor to Liszt's later endeavors to create the softest and most sublime piano music. Just when you become seduced and expect even more heavenly moments, Liszt says, "nuh-uh" and crashes fortissimo into the most formidable and hair-raising fugue of the entire Romantic piano. It simply must be heard to be believed.

The music on the second CD evokes just as much enthusiasm from me. The Donizetti transcription/paraphrase have much to offer with the sonorities and emotions that come through on the piano. However, the majority of music on this second CD consists of Wagner transcriptions, but they all have their merits and unique moments. The Pilgrim's Chorus is a sure crowd-pleaser. Liszt's fantasy on Mosonyi's Szep Ilonka is another note-worthy piece here with a cheerful and energetic roller-coaster ride of music. It would be daft to remark on each piece but I felt it necessary to espouse how tremendous and amazing the first CD is, not to mention the surprises and impressive tributes to Wagner found on the second CD.

Bottom line: This is another milestone in Leslie Howard's recordings of Liszt: profound and mesmerizing music that has remained hidden from connoiseurs and amateurs alike. Treat yourself to some of Liszt's most extraordinary music here; you won't find something like this anywhere else. Howard is on a mission to revive those forgotten masterpieces of Liszt just like Ronald Smith did with Charles Valentin Alkan.

This is a beautiful CD but has nothing to do with pianists and Liszt, as the other two commentators seem to suggest. I suspect this is a misfire in Amazon's system. Be assured that these are beautiful works (Penalosa's dates are c1470-1528) movingly performed by Bruno Turner and his Pro Cantione Antiqua. Obtain and enjoy!

A revelation!.......2002-04-25

I find that the most interesting and impressive work in this compilation is the Fantasy and Fugue on the "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" chorale, which (like me) you may already have known in its version for organ. I was surprised by the grandeur it retains in the piano 4-hand version presented here. As Leslie Howard writes in the accompanying notes, it truly is one of Liszt's finest efforts, really in the same class as the B Minor Sonata. Playing and recording quality reflect the same high standards you will find in all of Howard's Liszt series on Hyperion.

Amazing operatic transcriptions.......2000-01-13

The first disc is dedicated to Meyerbeer. Needless to say, Meyerbeer himself was quite impressed. The last track features two piano players. The second disc is distinguished by Liszt's great Wagner transcriptions--the Parsifal is more of a fantasy on that opera, and it's marvelous, as are the other pieces. A really enjoyable set of transcriptions, played superbly by Leslie Howard.

Perfect collection for Opera "curious".......2002-07-28

It is an unfortunate side effect of modern life that the traditional sources of a classical education are disappearing. Because many classical music radio stations have transformed into yet another commercial outlet of top 40 pap, access to classical music for the general public is generally limited to movies or television in the form of background music. These sources rarely credit their music, so most people are left wondering what is was they heard and enjoyed.

I am known to enjoy classical music and my friends often ask me for listening suggestions.(What is wrong with the public schools? They should be teaching this.) Normally, I shy away from collections like "Adagios" or "The Art of Herbert von Karajan" as they generally show little thought in their organization. I do enjoy and would recommend this disk "Opera Made Easy", which I discovered...one afternoon.

Opera is the most imposing of the classics for the novice. The usual [$$]to [$$]price tag of a double or triple CD can be intimidating when embarking into unknown territory.

This collection contains many favorites from Italian Opera: Donizetti, Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini to name the largest contributors. Many are familiar to even the novice, like the Toreador Chorus from Bizet's Carmen. Some are found in today's television commercials, like Leo Delibes' Flower Duet. There are a couple of show stoppers here: Puccini's Nessun Dorma, performed by a Pavarotti in his prime and Robert Merrill's poignant performance of the Pagliacci Si puo? And who can resist the bubbly quartet Bella filiglia del'Amore from Rigoletto which is sung in style by Pavarotti, Sherill Milnes, Joan Sutherland, and Hugette Tourangeau.

While this collection presents a pleasant introduction of Italian opera to the novice, the opera-aware will also enjoy these stirring performances. A great CD for a Sunday evening dinner with friends and family.
