masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10
This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.
Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05
Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."
Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.
Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.
As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?
A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.
Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15
Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.
But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

A well-kept secret.......2007-05-18
Everyone wants to have a crack at the "bleeding chunks" eventually, and while I love the flashier Stoky and Furtwangler approach, I wouldn't want to be without the Boult. He's a great Wagnerian, strange as it may seem. Who could blame him for not wanting to go down in history merely as the finest Holstian? As long as this stays in print, Ormandy will still be considered the least sexy conductor. (I heard CBS researchers found an Ormandy fan once!)
Essential Wagner.......2006-06-17
As a child, this set was my first experience of Wagner's music, and it made quite an impression on me. However, as I grew older and began to collect the full operas I felt I could surely do better than Adrian Boult and the British for a collection of the preludes, overtures, and orchestral music from the operas. I was wrong. I have yet to here any recordings that can match the power and intensity as demonstrated in these discs from Boult and the LSO (and LPO). The Meistersinger prelude alone is worth the price, and the only version of the prelude to Tristan which outdoes the one here is Bohm's live 1966 Tristan. The Solti, Karajan, and Klemperer highlight discs have their moments (and truthfully, I do prefer Solti and Karajan for the "Ring" highlights), but their contributions are greatest in the full operas, and overall, they simply can't muster the power and intensity that Boult brings to these preludes, overtures, etc.
Even if you have other compilations of Wagner's music in "bleeding chunks", I can assure you they don't come close to this one; and with two discs (the second containing mostly music from Parsifal and the "Ring") at 14 bucks, there is absolutely no excuse not to have this essential recording. So go ahead and buy this disc, never buy another Wagner compilation again, and with the money you save get started on the more important task at hand: the full operas.
Excellent Wagner from a surprising source ... or maybe not!.......2004-09-27
Does Sir Adrian Boult conjure up of images of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams, but not Wagner? You're not alone! Nevertheless, this is a double CD set not to be missed! Many years ago, I was listening to a classical radio music station in NYC that was playing the music of Wagner. The performance was so good, that I wouldn't leave the radio until I found out the name of the conductor. When the announcer said the conductor was Sir Adrian Boult, I was quite surprised. I had recordings of English music from Sir Adrian on Angel/EMI, but I never associated that conductor with Wagner. Having been blessed with a friend who had knowledge of classical music way beyond his years, I gave him a call to find out more about the recording. He told me that, Boult had solid expertise in the area of Germanic music, but, in England, had been overshadowed in that repertoire by Otto Klemperer. He told me not to be surprised about Boult's very fine Wagner, it was an excellent recording to purchase and, indeed, search out Sir Adrian's wonderful performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (now available on Vanguard). Fast-forward many years and I find myself browsing through Amazon for a recording of Wagner's Overtures and Preludes. Like everyone else I know, I foolishly jettisoned my LPs in the 1990s and have been "back-filling" ever since. Well, I was able to obtain this splendid set for less than $7 per CD! There are a total of 18 selections covering most of Wagner's operas including five excerpts from the Ring Cycle. The performances are excellent coming from no less than three British orchestras, and the sound is top-shelf EMI. Sir Adrian's pacing is measured and his vision is broad and sensitive, highlighting the beauty and grandeur --rather than just the fire-- of this glorious music. I heartily recommend this two-CD set, and at this price, I think it's a steal.
Go For Boult.......2003-07-08
Sir Adrian Boult is best known for his recordings of the British repertoire, and his performances, particularly of Holst's "The Planets" and Elgar's Symphonies and Orchestral Works, are legendary. But Boult was also an excellent conductor of Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner, and this 2-CD set collects the Overtures and Preludes of the latter German titan. These stereo recordings from the early to mid-1970s with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras are truly first rate. EMI's set compares nicely in terms of price, quality and musical offerings with competing sets by DG (Bohm, Kubelik, et al) and Sony (Ormandy & Szell). You might have reservations about getting German music conducted by a Brit, but you really can't go wrong with Boult.
Memorable and dramatic- A must have for Wagner fans.......2000-03-20
I bought this cd for the following reasons: 1 I'm a Wagner fan, 2 the cover looks exquisite and 3 I wanted to hear a "prelude" since it sounds fancy and never heard one. The result is great cd. The Tannhauser overture, Tristan and Isolde prelude and Lohengrin Prelude to act 3 are all very excellent. Excerpts from the Ring of the Nibelunge aren't as good as I had anticipated but are still enjoyable. The music speaks the tales of Wagner's operas. Just hear it, as slow and irksome as they maybe, these preludes make you feel the tragic love of Tristan and Isolde, the epic odyssey of Lohengrin and the holy, heavenly spirit in Parsifal as he discovers the Holy Grail. Buy this CD and you won't regret it. Except that one bit from Gotterdammerung, Siegfried's Funeral March. It does'nt quite have the feel of grand disaster as it did in John Boorman's film Excalibur. If you're hoping to find that version(which is better) stick with the Classics Go To The Movies Vol 2 cd. But all the other pieces on this CD are excellent. Go and buy this CD- now !

Customer Reviews:
Hallo-wha?.......2006-04-19
Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.
An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06
I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).
Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15
As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.
If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.
It's not That bad..........2004-06-14
It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!
A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.
There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.
Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02
One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.
This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

Amazon.com essential recording
Recorded evidence preserves a regretfully skewed view of Otto Klemperer's Wagner. Happily, this 1968 recording of Der fliegende Holländer captures the aged Otto Klemperer at his inspired and disciplined best. The vivid detail and expressive intensity of the orchestra playing begs description, and Suvi Raj Grubb's resplendent production sounds as fresh as today's best digital engineering, especially in EMI's 20-bit remastering. Anja Silja's Senta is arguably her most absorbing major Wagnerian portrayal on disc, in terms of both singing and acting. Likewise, Theo Adam, in excellent form, inflects the title role with unusual care for words. Ernst Kozub is as brash and brazen an Erik as they come (which is good!), and Martti Talvela's weighty yet flexible Daland hardly has been bettered, past or present. Yet the individual contributions yield to the remarkable sense of ensemble give and take--not just between the singers themselves, but in the way the orchestra leads, supports, and comments upon the sung text. Full texts and translations plus excellent annotations clinch this set's essential status as both the basic Flying Dutchman on disc and Otto Klemperer's finest recording of an opera. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Poor Senta gets a disc change!.......2006-12-20
I do like this recording and agree with the other reviews. But, there is a major editing mistake. Senta's aria is interrupted by a disc change. What a mistake! Still, I would recommend this recording despite this unfortunate break in dramatic flow.
A "Dutchman" without a Dutchman--serious problem.......2005-09-28
EMI brought out two Flying Dutchman recordings that went to the top of the list, this one under Klemperer and a later one under Karajan. Both had excellent sound, orchestral playing, and ocnducting, along with outstanding choruses (Klemperer, however, had the edge here with the masterful Wilhelm Pitz as his choral director).
Unfortunately, both sets had a serious flaw, and as it happened they were opposites. Karajan's Senta is the harsh-voiced, rather fierce Slavic soprano Dunja Vejkovic, Klemperer's Dutchman is the faceless, dry-voiced workman Theo Adam. Over the years neither defect has improved, so either you listen to these classic sets and skirt around the flaws--hard to do, given how much music Senta and the Dutchman sing together--or you go elsewhere. Personally, I went to the recent Sinopoli on DG and a live performance under Sawallisch on super-budget Opera d'Oro
A Stunning "Dutchman".......2005-06-14
Written in 1840, Der Fliegende Hollander was Wagner's second opera, (and after the 6-hour Rienzi, his shortest opera), and it is often considered his most "Italiante" in feel and lyrical quality. It's also extremely Romantic in style--you can feel the wind on your face and taste the salt spray.
It makes for an excellent introduction to Wagner's operas, and while there really are no bad recordings of this opera, this recording is one of the best. The great conductor Otto Klemperer was 82 when he made this recording, and although he made a couple of more recordings, this is generally considered his last great recording. His tempi are slow, but intense and purposeful and the opera never drags.
His cast is also excellent. Theo Adams makes a powerful, poignant Dutchman, with an edge to his voice that I found very moving. Many critics consider Anja Silja's performance of Senta to be the definitive interpretation, and while Leonie Rysanek or Astrid Varnay are also in the top flight, Silja is a superb singing actress who clearly convey's Senta's almost frightening intensity. Martti Talvela has got to have one of the richest bass voices of the 20th century, Ernst Kozub is ardent and in-your-face as Eric, and Gerhard Unger brings wonderful musicality to the role of the Steersman. Mention should be made of the chorus, which sings its large role with tremendous excitement. This recording is an excellent addition to any opera collection.
A minority view.......2004-09-28
I'm afraid I just don't get the enthusiasm others have for this recording. My principal problem is with Klemperer's speed, or rather the lack thereof. He's the only conductor I know who can make *everything* sound as long as Parsifal (even when the actual minutes aren't that different from other recordings). Here the Dutchman can barely sail, much less fly. I don't remember my dates well enough to know if this recording was made before or after Karajan did his best to ruin Silja's voice, but the top notes are pretty harsh here, though some of the role is nicely done. There are other recordings of this opera that have much to offer; check out the Konwitschny on Koch/Berlin with Fischer-Dieskau and Wunderlich, or the RCA with Dorati.
Best Flying Dutchman.......2004-01-29
This is the best Flying Dutchman ever!! The fantastically intense Otto Klemperer brings his famed intensity to this masterpiece. Klemperer was performing the Flying Dutchman at Convent Garden at about the same time this recording was made. The stage experience and intensity of the 'live' performances has obviously carried over into this recording. This is the top recommended version by Gramophone, and it is indeed worthy of the Great Recording of the Century series. The Philharmonia plays superbly intense. Wind, sea and storm all come across vividly. Anja Silja is the personification of Senta's obsession with the Dutchman. From her entry, you KNOW what is the conclusion of the story - that she is so obsessed about the Dutchman that she will finally jump over the cliff for him. That last high B is fantastic!! Ernst Kozub as Erik is interesting for 2 reasons. One is that he really makes a great Heldentenor in the freakishly difficult role of Erik. The second reason is that he was the original Siegfried for Solti's Ring. So this recordings is valuable in preserving a 'what-might-have-been' for us to hear. Marti Talvela as usual is never less than fantastic - I need say no further. Theo Adam is the Dutchman to the core!!
Very highly recommended!! Don't pass by the chance to hear Klemperer's last great recording!!

James Levine's is a more recent entry in the realm of Dutchman recordings, and sonically the recording is absolutely stunning, with great attention having been paid to the recording process. The casting for this Metropolitan Opera effort is also uniformly first rate, even in the less grateful roles of the hapless Erik, sung by the impressive Ben Heppner, and the scolding nurse, Mary, sung by Birgitta Svendén. Morris's brooding Dutchman is hard to match on any other available recording, and Deborah Voigt is a ravishing Senta. The chorus work is quite good, though not quite as rich as that heard in the Solti/Chicago recording. Overall, Levine does a workmanlike job of conducting these impressive forces, though there are passages in which his tempi seem to drag. This recording is a must for anyone who needs a completely up to date version of Wagner's first major opera. --Christian C. Rix
Customer Reviews:
A Fine Dutchman.......2006-10-02
This recording, featuring noted Wagnerians James Morris and Deborah Voight, is a great recording of Dutchman. I can't figure out why there are so many negative reviews here.
Morris' Dutchman is nothing short of stunning and Voigt makes an amazing Senta (her rendition of Senta's Ballad is just perfect). Dismiss the naysayers and add this to your collection.
Orchestra is fine, but . . ........2006-08-23
The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra gives out a spectacular performance, creating enormous power and precision. And that's probably the only thing that's good about this Flying Dutchman. James Levine's tempi are dragged (most notably the "Overture" and the "Spinning Chorus"), making this the least Wagnerian of all studio recordings. The choir is surprisingly unpleasant: their diction isn't good enough and their pitch isn't completely correct. The vocal soloists . . . well, let's just say that even Daniel Barenboim's choice of casting is better than this. As for the sound quality, it's just plain awful: The volume is a bit weak and the bass sound is heard incorrectly.
All in all, if you want to get this ONLY for the orchestral sound, then do it. Otherwise, go for the Solti, Sinopoli, or Klemperer recordings.
A complete DUD. Avoid........2006-07-04
I'll just get straight to the point. I agree with the other reviews, this is not a good Dutchman. The cast is certainly decent, if not great, but there are more insightful performances on other sets, Klemperer on EMI having the best cast overall. The amazon review mentions the good sound quality, and it is very good.......if all you want to hear is the orchestra. True the MET orchestra plays superbly, at loud parts the orchestra sounds massive and powerful, impressive in its own right. But the orchestra simultaneously drowns out the singers at every tutti throughout the entire performance. And the loud parts are the only times this performance sounds any good. Levine's shaping of the score is formless and lifeless, lacking in any sense of drive or momentum, sounding pratically comatose in slow and/or quiet sections. Just listen the beginning of Act 2, the maiden's spinning song. No pulse, no verve, no life. I was quite frankly bored listening to this performance. There are many better performances of this piece on record. Among them, the classic Klemperer on EMI; Steinberg on Naxos, a great bargain version; and in the realm of modern digital recordings, Sinopoli on DG and Dohnanyi on Decca are both superb. Get any of them before getting this dud of a performance.
Great performance, but POOR sound.......2005-02-10
I wanted this recording to sound good, technically. But, that is where it falls way short. The recorded sound is distant. The performance is outstanding. I disagree with other review about Levine's tempo -- I like what he does here. The singers are fantastic. It is just the technical quality of the recording that is so darn bad.
Slow and Dull but Nice Enough.......2004-08-27
This recording seems to have been made at the nadir of Levine's fixation on glacial tempos. The result is not more profound or more sublime--it's just dull. The sound is lovely but entirely bereft of any trace of drama. So much so that I'd almost recommend Barenboim's recording--with Eaglen's horrific Senta--just as an antidote. But luckily there are plenty of recordings to go around, so no such choice is necessary. In any event, though, skip this one. The overture, spinning song, ballade, double chorus--they're all pretty, but deadly dull. The choral singing is also pretty unfocused.

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular Astrid Varnay in an excellent "Dutchman".......2007-03-31
SOURCE: Live performance at the Bayreuth Festival in 1955.
SOUND: In general, Bayreuth performances throughout the 1950s were well-recorded, just as in general, performances from the Salzburg Festival during the same decade were not. Why this should be, I have no idea, but it is a good rule of thumb, nevertheless. This "Flying Dutchman" is no exception to the rule. The solo voices and the chorus are very nicely caught and correctly balanced against the orchestra hidden away as Wagner intended in the covered pit. I think this set captures the unique sonic ambience of the Festspielhaus as well as any recording of its time.
Since this is a live performance, there is a certain inevitable amount of foot stomping. The spinning chorus at the beginning of Act II is accompanied by a number of authentically clacking, clattering spinning wheels. Equally authentically, the laws of physics seem to prohibit the wheels from clacking and clattering in time to Wagner's music. The fiercely disciplined audience discloses its existence only at the very end when it bursts into applause.
If you insist on seeking them out, you can hear some tape hiss, a few joins of the old analogue tapes and a couple of fleeting moments of drop off when a singer enters a partial sonic dead spot. Of course, if you hear all that, you've been so busy listening to the sound that you probably haven't heard the performance.
CAST: Der Hollaender, a cursed sea-rover - Hermann Uhde (baritone); Dalland, a Norwegian sea captain - Ludwig Weber (bass); Der Steuermann, Dalland's sleepy-headed steersman - Josef Traxel (tenor); Senta, Dalland's daughter, a young woman much taken by a portrait of s storm-blown voyager - Astrid Varnay (soprano); Mary - Elisabeth Schaertel (mezzo-soprano). CONDUCTOR: Joseph Keilberth with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and Chorus.
COMMENTARY: This is as good a performance of "Der fliegende Hollaender" as we are ever likely to get. Fans may praise one famous performance or another as its equal, but there is no better one on record. I base that rather grandiose claim on the fact that this performance has it all: a conductor who remains true throughout to Wagner the composer and to Wagner the man of the theater, a remarkably strong cast of singing actors and an unswerving adherence to the dramatic arc of the piece.
When I had finished listening to this set for the first time, I dug out my old copy of Karajan's 1980s version for comparison--and in order to determine whether Herr Doktor von K's outing was as really as feebly cast and bullishly wrong-headed as I had remembered. (It was.)
I generally agree with the comments about the cast made by Mr. Steinberg in the previous review, although I am willing to give a little more praise to Rudolf Lustig's Erik. The Dutchman's would-be rival is, after all, a rather rough and ready character at best and I think it makes good dramatic sense for him to sound a bit frazzled. Good as the other singers are, the real star is the wonderful Astrid Varnay. Senta is usually regarded as being a less demanding role than her Wagnerian sisters, so she tends to be cast with sopranos of lighter heft. Varnay, of course, outclasses them all, for not only is she a full-fledged Brunnhilda, but a great one to boot. Senta, with the likes of Varnay singing, is a true star part!
Some purists may object that Uhde seems a bit strained on his highest notes and Varnay occasionally sounds a little thick. I can only reply that these failings are few and far between, and that they are trifiling compared to the remarkable overall levels of performance.
It has long been fashionable to be loftily dismissive toward conductor Joseph Keilberth. The Good Grey Grammophone Magazine has called him "Kapellmeister" and "routineer." Whatever the merits of that, I can't recall any opera recorded by him that was less than first rate. When Keilberth conducted, what emerged tended toward the intentions of the composer, not the idiosyncratic demands of an egotistical baton-wielder.
Five wild and storm-driven stars. Jojohoe!
Bayreuth Rules!.......2006-12-22
This is another great issue from the 1955 Keilberth Bayreuth series. I have already commented on the overwhelming power of his "Rheingold" and "Walkuere" (I have no doubt that the res of the 1955 Ring will be of equal quality and will be the ESSENTIAL Ring), and the same goes for this Dutchman. The Overture sets the stage for a vigorous, weighty, but not elephantine interpretation, with the scent of salty sea air and thunderclouds just jumping out at the listener. As for the cast, the title role, sung by Hermann Uhde, is perfectly rendered. Uhde had a leaner, perhaps smaller voice than Hotter, but has the same intensity and sensitivity; what a shame that he never was properly appreciated in his lifetime! His is certainly one of the three best Dutchmen on record (Hotter and Fischer-Dieskau are the other two). Weber's Daland likewise is as fine as Frick's and very close to Hann's. Traxel is one of the the best Steersmen (The other is Wunderlich) and Schaertel is a lovely Mary; only Lustig's Erik sounds a bit worn and unromantic (Lustig is a great Loge in the Keilberth "Rheingold", by the way). He is by no means bad, but certainly falls short of Windgassen in the Knappertsbusch from the same festival and Schock in the Fischer-Dieskau/Konwitchny set. But one role here is simply in a class by itself: The Senta of Astrid Varnay. No other Senta on CD or LP can match the power of her delivery and its raw passion. Recordingwise, this is another great set from 1955 Bayreuth. I would never want to give up the Krauss or Konwitchny sets, but if I had to pick one "Flying Dutchman" that really storms the seas and makes the case for the superiority of live performances, this would be it. BAYREUTH RULES FOREVER!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2006-06-30
First of all anything with Sir Solti's name on is worth purchasing. Solti has such a way with interpreting music! If you like overtures this CD is for you. It has the best overtures here in one collection. With orchestras like chicago, london, and the vienna you cannot argue with the performances. There are a few "weaker" ensembles, but when compared with the other ensembles there are few that will not sound weak. Again any work Solti has done is worth purchasing!
Famous Overtures.......2005-08-16
Did not like the way these musical pieces were "interpretted".
Did not like the tempo and in one piece one of the instruments played a portion which I would say they played a flat instead of a natural note. This is based on hearing the same pieces played by someone else, it's just my opinion.
Spectacular.......2003-09-25
Not only does it include some of the most famous overtures, but they are played in such an exciting style, full of life and passion. The Suppe overtures are superior and the Wagner overtures are wonderful as well. There is not a bad point to this recording - highly recommended!
Excellent.......2002-06-11
This is an excellent collection of overtures, especially of Von Suppe's overtures. Solti truly brings out life in these pieces.
The best Overture Album !.......2000-02-28
If you like overtures, here is the album. Never have these been performed so musically and with such excitement. The orchestras involved vary in their abilities, yet the Chicago, Vienna, and London Symphony perfom with style. Solti loves this music and it shows.
