The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17

This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine

Can't go wrong.......2007-07-14

This is a really great CD for the price. It has many of the famous Arias on it and although the singers may not be the best out there they are certainly very good. This is cheaper than the price of a take away lunch; you can't go wrong with this CD.

Most Famous???.......2007-05-14

The title of this cd is misleading and I found myself wondering whose list did they use. That is not to say that there aren't some real treasures included here. The duet from Lakme is lovely in every way, Mady Mesple in particular, very beautful and very french, and far superior to Sutherlands hooty approach. Scotto and Bergonzi are superb, the Tristan and Isolde of Vickers and Dernesch truly other worldly, and the presentation of the rose duet with the young Ludwig and the astonishing Teresa Stich- Randell had me playing it over and over and I still can't believe it, but the most famous??? This cd is definitly worth buying, and I hated giving it only 3 stars but if you're talking most famous you could fill a couple of cd's with Puccini, not to mention Verdi, Mozart, etc. before Bizet's Les Pecheurs des perles, beautiful as it is, made the most famous list.

Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25

I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.

Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23

I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.

Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.

Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.

I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.

I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.

Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.

The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17

I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.

I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.

I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

A Whitman sampler of Mozart.......2007-05-02

Truth be told, classical music--like most other kinds--is best heard in the program context for which it was written. Yet any time you can get Neville Marriner, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Mozart in the same place at the same time, you can hardly *not* go for it.

Like the famous chocolate sampler, you get a few of each flavor but not all you want of your favorite kind.

How then to decide? Well, viewing the rollicking good movie AMADEUS tips the scales towards buying and enjoying this fabulous, if disordered, compilation of the Mozart greats that went into the making of a movie that forever dissed the composer's rep but also gained him some fans among non-classical-listening movie-goers.

For the price you also receive a superb liner booklet that locates each piece within the film's narrative and says a word or two about the music on its own merits.

Eventhough many kids in school listen to rap and all, I listen to classical. After watching Amadeus, I was moved by the pieces selected to be played in the film. I especially liked Symphony No. 29 1st Movement. Also, when Salieri is at the Archbishop of Salzburg's palace and reads Mozart's piece, Serenade for Winds, is among my favorites. In Serenade for Winds, Mozart creates a very emotional and almost night music feel to it. I was surprised that the director/conductor did not put in a few more famous pieces into the album . . . ex. Symphony No. 40, The Magic Flute, etc. This is an excellent album and anyone who wants to enjoy the genius of Mozart should purchase this. Take it from me, you will enjoy this album immesensely.

Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart's nervy youthfullness went far beyond his personal life.His choice of music very much reflects
his own spirit.He chose to set to music Le Nozze Di Figaro (a
play largely blamed for starting the French Revolution) put him
somewhat at odds with Emperor Joseph.His tendency (very much in
attendance here) to compose opera's in German at a time when
Italian opera was at it's post popular also made him a bit of a musical rebel of his day.I don't listen to alot of classical music (but certainly I have favorites,notably by Eric Satie) but Mozart's many concereto's,acts of his opera's and so
on demonstrate the youthful composers gift for melody and yes,
even hints at improvisation that set 18'th century Vienna (and
later the world) on fire!And Peter Shaffer was sure to include
acts from Mozarts errie unfinished reqeuim mass towards the end
of this CD.So to fans of the movie with more then a passing interest in classical music will enjoy this!And I think Mozart's
spirit will always be alive in those who choose to challange themselfs to innovate within music and get the public's ear to
stretch!

i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!

A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

Classically overrated.......2007-07-11

The licentious rascal Don Giovanni is one the most recognizable and numerously portrayed villains in the realm of the opera. The great Feodor Chaliapin and Ezio Pinza epitomized the role in the era of primitive recording. Cesare Siepi and Nicolai Ghiaurov both lent their singularly dense basso voices to the libertine; Tito Gobbi, George London, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Ruggero Raimondi extended lighter, more exuberant voices to the philanderer. Most recently, Samuel Ramey, Ingvar Wixell, and Bryn Terfel have constructed accomplished performances under Karajan, Sir Colin Davis, and Solti, respectively. Eberhard Wächter's loutish, gruff voice is more or less perfectly suited for the role of Don Juan, despite the fact that he sounds almost totally irate throughout. With "Deh vieni alla finestra," he is airier, which is somewhat unbecoming. However, he is merciless and sublime during "Finch'han dal vino," the anthem of all libertines.

Luigi Alva is a robust, vital Don Ottavio. He conjures the glorious image of an enamored youth with "Dalla sua pace." His greatest achievement is "Il mio tesoro intanto," one of the most difficult arias Mozart ever composed. (It was, in fact, so challenging, that the tenor at the original premiere of Don Giovanni was unable to perform it and Mozart had to compose "Dalla sua pace" to accommodate him.) Alva's tone is sweet and demure and he handles the long-winded piece with adroitness. Giuseppe Taddei's Leporello is a matter of preference. Taddei is a more commendable actor than a baritone. His participation in the recitatives is often more hilarious and compelling than any of his arias. In the scandalous "Madamina, il catalogo è questo," he is surprisingly charming and engaging, but still fails to inject the verve the piece requires. In short, one might prefer a singer more along the lines of Walter Berry, Fernando Corena, or Wladimiro Ganzarolli. If one favors Taddei, however, one is also likely to enjoy Ferruccio Furlanetto's no-nonsense performance in the Karajan recording. A young and booming Piero Cappuccilli is an absolute treasure as the bumpkin Masetto; one can hardly imagine a finer and more fitting performance of "Ho capito, signor sì." Gottlob Frick provides marquee value as the Commendatore. The role is designed for a deeper, more sonorous bass, such as Paata Burchuladze in the Karajan recording; however, the Wagernian bass's genius shines during "Don Giovanni, a cenor teco," the grandfather of all operatic finales and one of the most fearsome scenes of retribution in all drama. Frick is terrifying real as the hellish commandant descended from Heaven (even though Kurt Böhme, Walter Kreppel, Arnold van Mill, or Martti Talvela would have been sublime). Also, Wächter radiates contemptible pride and Taddei is appropriately frightened.

The ladies of the recording, however, are where the brilliance lies. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is a luscious joy for the ears as the exacerbated Donna Elvira. During "Ah, chi mi dice mai," her fury is inconsolable and ineffable; one might mistake her for an Italian Königin der Nacht! She oscillates between vehemence and remorse with "In quali eccessi, o Numi" ... "Mi tradì, quell'alma ingrata" and is positively radiant in her conflict. Joan Sutherland perfected the role of the saintly Donna Anna by the close of her career. She, Schwarzkopf, and Alva are divine during the trio "Protegga il giusto cielo," which radiates a charming pre-Verdian quality. It is somewhat abstruse as to why, in the vast expanse of the world (when, in 1961, he could have found Beverly Sills, Victoria de Los Angeles, and Mirella Freni), Giulini chose Graziella Sciutti to perform Zerlina. She is simply awful, often off-key and phlegmatic. "Là ci darem la mano," one of Mozart's most beloved and recognizable duets, is marred; Wächter is in seductive voice, but Sciutti serves as a confounded, squawking anathema. She is also irritatingly inadequate during Zerlina's signature aria, "Batti, batti o bel masetto."

A young Carlo Maria Giulini produces an altogether fine recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra, which echoes his esteemed version of Le Nozze di Figaro, with a similar same cast: Schwarzkopf as the Countess, Wächter as the Count, Taddei as Figaro, and Cappuccilli as Antonio. The Overture draws out like a blade; it is ominous, foreboding, and echoes Don Giovanni's mortifying demise. If one operatic recording in the entire repertoire exists that is more celebrated than this 1961 recording of Mozart's greatest opera, it should be deemed the Eighth Wonder of the World. Though it may be beloved or despised, this controversial production is often considered the epoch of modern Mozartian masterpieces.

is it perfect? no. but it is the best recording of the greatest work of art in the world (ask george bernard shaw). if the human race were ever required to justify itself to a higher form of life, there would be no better way to do it than to play this.

Great singers, bloated orchestral sound.......2007-05-05

The singers in this recording have been discussed at length by other reviewers, but one point which seems to have been missed is the murky, bloated orchestral sound. It sounds like a huge late Romantic orchestra with sluggish attack and bad articulation. I'm not a fan of "early music" fanaticism--George Szell or Neville Marriner could make 18th century music crystal clear with a conventional (tho scaled down) 20th century orchestra--but the orchestra here sounds inappropriately gigantic and cloudy. A real distraction from the roster of mostly wonderful singers.... (P.S. Was Giulini really that great of a conductor? I've heard dozens of his recordings and sensed competence, taste, but none of that zing of the truly inspired.)

Delicious ear candy!.......2006-12-12

No matter how much I listen to bel canto, verismo , Verdi et al (and I am a big fan), there's nothing quite like the sound of a Mozart opera.
My personal favorite is still "Figaro" but this ranks close.
Taut, dynamic, exciting and delectable to the ears.
This is a great recording, I especially love Schwarzkopf's Donna Elvira.
It was also a treat to hear Sutherland, early in her career and as spectacular as ever.
All the male and female voices are different and with this many characters, that matters.
Bravo!

These CD's are very uplifting and will leave you in a great mood. These are wonderful for children to listen to on a daily basis.

It's okay. For the classroom, there is one CD that's good background music for working at desks and one that's good for dancing. But I'd rather listen to "real" classical music with kids.

Our whole famiy loves these CDs! They are very relaxing to listen to while playing games, drawing, or building! I'm no music expert, but I thought the sound quality was good. We listen to them almost everyday! In fact, our kids request 'Mozart music' when playing and it does seem to help keep them focused on one thing for quite some time. :)

Some scholars claimed that the Author of "The Mozart Effect", Don Campbell, overemphasized his theory. I bought his 2 books, and this set of CD to find out whether his findings are legitimate.
The more I listen to Mozart, according to his arrangement, the more I'm convinced. The Mozart Effect: Music for Children, Volume 1-3 is an excellent prescription for the young and older mind, alike.

I have not heard this CD but the idea that listening to Classical music in the womb has been disproven by legitimate scientists for a long time. A simple search found the following...

"The Mozart Effect is an example of how science and the media mix in our world. A suggestion in a few paragraphs in a scientific journal becomes a universal truth in a matter of months, eventually believed even by the scientists who initially recognized how their work had been distorted and exaggerated by the media. Others, smelling the money, jump on the bandwagon and play to the crowd, adding their own myths, questionable claims, and distortions to the mix."

"The idea for the Mozart Effect originated in 1993 at the University of California, Irvine, with physicist Gordon Shaw and Frances Rauscher, a former concert cellist and an expert on cognitive development. They studied the effects on a few dozen college students of listening to the first 10 minutes of the Mozart Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K.448). They found a temporary enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning, as measured by the Stanford-Binet IQ test. No one else has been able to duplicate their results. One researcher commented that the "very best thing that could be said of their [Shaw's and Rauscher's] experiment-were it completely uncontested-would be that listening to bad Mozart enhances short-term IQ" (Linton). Rauscher has moved on to study the effects of Mozart on rats. Both Shaw and Rauscher have speculated that exposure to Mozart enhances spatial-reasoning and memory in humans. "

Note that the only scientific tests were performed on college students.

If you want to listen to Mozart, great. Just buy a CD that does not insult your intelligence by making ridiculous claims.
