Beecham as Wagnerian.......2007-04-20

Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) is not thought of today as a major Wagner conductor, but he did conduct a number of Wagner's music dramas at Covent Garden in the 1930s, and has recorded a number of Wagner overtures and preludes, including this collection.

Although the early- mid 1950s sound will be an issue for some, I urge serious collectors to consider this recording, as it shows Beecham's mastery of Wagner. A great alternative to other Wagner collections of Bohm (DG), Karajan (EMI), Furtwangler (Naxos Historical and EMI), Bernstein (Sony) and Ormandy (Sony).

Highly recommended.

Lyrical Wagner from Beecham's best period, but oh the sound!.......2006-03-15

No composer suffers more from dated mono sound than Wagner, so these recordings by Beecham of "bleeding chunks" are hobbled from the start. They date from 1936-38 with the London Phil. Despite his frivolous exterior Beecham was a serious, if improbable Wagnerite. His tendecy was to be refreshingly quick and lyrical at a time when those virtues were rare in Wagner conducting.

We get some notable solo singing and choral work in the excerpts from Meistersinger and Gotterdammerung, including a long (11 min.) scene when Hagen summons the clan in Act III, but these are the most limited of the recordings sonically. Torsten Ralf's Prize Song is quite lovely, however, and beaautifully conducted. The surfaces are impeccably clean, which helps, yet after a while it gets tiring to have to compensate for the dated sonics. Taken a bit at a time, this is an impressive representation of Beecham's skill in the opera pit, where he spent the bulk of his major career.

Beecham's superb Wagner.......2001-01-30

Beecham brings all his insight and originality to these satisfying Wagner selections. The Meistersinger overture bubbles more playfully than any I've heard, but Beecham has all of Wagner's tension, darkness, and excitement at his command as well.

Substantial overtures from Beecham's peak period, but not in best sound.......2006-03-15

I get impatient with Beecham's fondness for snippets of music lasting less than 5 min. Here we move up to gobbets lasting about 8-12 min. This Dutton reissue consists of prewar London Phil. recordings between 1933 and 1940; as one would expect, the sound is variable. The opening Marriage of Figaro Over. from 1937 is shrill and nasty, but the next item, a Don Giovanni Over. from 1940, though cramped and not very colorful, is more listenable, and the third item, a Magtic Flute Over. from 1938, is best of all.

And so it goes through Weber, Brahms, Wagner, etc. Even after adjusting my ears, I wouldn't say that any of these recordings is a sensual pleasure, but they represent Beecham in good if not revelatory form. He avoidss the tendency prevalent in the 78 era to rush the music so that it can fit on a side--we get a realistic picture of his ideas about each work. Overall, I'd rank this colleciton somewhere in the middle of available Beecham reissues.
