One of the greatest tenors ever.......2005-03-15

When Fritz Wunderlich died (tragically, in an accident) at the
age of 36, some of Opera's greatest experts and critics were
devastated and called his death a "heavy blow to music."

How true. Wunderlich never had the chance to get international
exposure at the level modern tenors do. He lived in the "wrong era", before media hype, and he died youg - much too young.

Yet even today, Wunderlich experiences a remarkable renaissance.
The world has (re-)discovered this gorgeous voice. Monaco and
Corelli had more power (though not much more), Bjoerling's and
Pavarotti's and Joseph Schmidt's timbres were more ringing (though not much more), Di Stefano and Carreras sang more sweetly (though not much more), and Bergonzi's and Tucker's belcanti were fabulous.

But hardly any of those had all thoe qualities combined like Fritz Wunderlich. Listen to his breathtaking musicality when he sang Mozart, his effortless height, his clear diction (probably unparalleled by any opera singer ever), his phrasing, his passion when he sang Verdi or Puccini.

And his height ... has there ever been a tenor who could reach,
seemingly without effort, the high D (no printing mistake...)
the way he did in "Granada" ?

And not just that he hit the high notes. It's how he hit them:
with expression, intelligence and, wherever required (mainly in
song and operetta), with wit and charm.

His Lieder are exemplary, his Italian songs probably more impressive than most Italian tenors'.

If one imagines that Wunderlich was just at the beginning of his career, one shudders at how great he would have become. I think he would have been mentioned in one breath with Caruso and Gigli.

What a huge loss to music, indeed.

One Of The Finest Male Singers We Will Ever Know.......2000-10-29

I don't claim to know a great deal about opera and my knowledge of great classical music singers -- German or otherwise -- is limited to the usual list of suspects and divas. But as far as I'm concerned, Fritz Wunderlich possessed one of the greatest God-given voices you will ever hear in ANY type of Western music. If you ever wondered why so many music critics still lament this man's tragic death before he could become a household name, I would advise you to purchase this collection. Good Lord, what a voice! Believe me, once you hear ol' Fritz belt out a few tunes, you won't be thinking of any other male singer in any other type of music (whether it's Pavrotti, Domingo, Melchior, Vickers, Fischer-Dieskau, Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Elvis, George Jones, Sam Cooke or even Bob Dylan) for some time. Herr Wunderlich was simply in a class by himself, and you are also strongly urged to get his EMI recording with Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Be warned, though, on that one. Not only will he shatter your heart with his singing of Mahler's sad lyrics, but he's liable to cause you lockjaw with his unique, incomparable phrasing.

It would be hard to imagine a better souvenir of a singer than this! Unfortunately, WW2 kept the fine Viennese singer Erich Kunz (1909-1999) out of recording studios for all but the last 10 years of his career. During those busy ten years, however, he featured in many complete opera and operetta recordings, produced mainly by Walter Legge, while maintaining a busy performing schedule. I recall seeing him night after night in Vienna, and also in Germany in "Die Meistersinger". A slight and trim figure, he exuded so much charm and comic talent across the footlights that the beauty of his velvety baritone voice and his innate musicality tended to pass me by.

Thanks to recordings however, and especially in the case of this Testament CD, his singing can be treasured forever. The Mozart opera excerpts suited his voice like a glove. Notice too, that there is a hitherto unpublished duet here with the adorable Irmgard Seefried. There's plenty of operetta items, some borrowed from the tenor parts but none the worse for that. And there's a selection of the schmalzty Viennese songs he recorded with a small Viennese instrumental ensemble accompanying.

Charming and Bewitching!.......1999-05-23

I just love this CD! Erich Kunz was, along with Fritz Kreisler, the personification of the Old Vienna. His Figaro, Leporello, and Papageno arias are incomparable. He also sings one Don Giovanni's aria with Seefried as well (and how warm and seductive he was as Don!). J. Strauss arias are sung with melting Viennese charm, well supported by equally sensitive and charming orchestra. The Viennese songs are sung sweetly and with fatherly warmth. The Schrammel ensemble that accompanies Kunz is also excellent and has full of atmosphere. Transfer is well done overall, except I seem to hear some gradual rising of pitch in some of the Viennese songs. But that is just a small flaw. The singing is exquisite, and that is all it matters.

Over 50 minutes from a great Bass.......2000-10-22

Kurt Moll is in my opinion the best bass I know. His voice has a clear articulation which makes his interpretation of a piece unique. I have heared many basses and with all of them, except Moll I had to have the libretto in-front of me to understand the words. With Moll I do not need to. In this CD he is marvelous and his interpretation unique. I particularly liked the German version of 'Madamina, il catalogo e questo' ('Schoene Donnia, hier ist genau der Register') on which I had some doubts due to the fact that it was in German; however Moll with his superb voice crushed all my doubts and makes me now like the German version more than the Italian! He is also very good in the two 'Der Freischutz' excerpts as well as in 'Der Meistersinger' and in 'The Barber of Bagdad'. The CD containing some less known pieces is an excellent introduction for a beginner and an absolute enjoyment for the professional; all from a really great Bass.

Kurt Moll's voice is perhaps not as rich in texture and polish as some other famous post-war basses (Frick, Talvela, Ghiaurov). It is not crystal clear like the voice of f.i. Lazlo Polgar, the hungarian bass. It is rather veiled, velvety, "smoky" like old whiskey or something. "Black velvet" it is written in the liner notes, and that's a pretty accurate description. But Moll wields it with amazing ease and flexibility, and has a phenomenal breathing technique (listen to the arias from "The Entführung aus dem Serail") to go with it. He has no troubles with the profundo parts of either Osmins or Kaspars (Cornelius) arias, and offers very good versions of famous Wagner-stuff (Meistersinger, Fliegende Holländer). Clearly an intelligent and serious artist, Moll is absolutely worth listening to!

Needs Audiophile Amplifier.......2004-10-29

Seven overtures from the first half of the nineteenth century and one (Humperdinck's 'Königskinder') from half a century later is the programme of this 1988 CD from Bratislava in Slovakia. The first three, all by Carl Maria von Weber, are, for me, by far the most interesting. Their evocative horns and their conjuring up of mystery, hunting scenes and the world of the fairies ('Oberon') is both musically convincing and at the same time a demonstration of how far music had progressed in the quarter of a century since the all too early death of Mozart. The overtures by Marschner, Nicolai and Lortzing are all entertaining in their way and contain more or less obvious reminiscences of Weber's work; the Humperdinck seems a little out of place and has a definitely more 'modern' feeling about it.

Alfred Walter and the CSR Symphony Orchestra give a fairly spirited performance, in which the strings sometimes sound a little overstretched. I have owned this CD for some years now, but it was only after I obtained my present hifi equipment that I began to hear the quality of this music: the recorded sound is not brilliant (the listener being some way from the 'stage') and benefits no end from a powerful, audiophile amplifier. It would be interesting to hear this music in historical performance practice on period instruments.
