Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10
This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.
Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05
Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."
Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.
Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.
As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?
A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.
Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15
Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.
But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

wonderful.......2007-04-04
This record is wonderful; simply Jessye Norman. What else can I say: loved it!
Favorite Soprano: Gorgeous Dramatic Voice.......2006-11-05
The first time I ever heard Jessye Norman sing was a recording of Dich Teure Halle from Wagner's Tannhauser, and I was immediately enchanted. She has a gorgeous ringing tone and powerful voice. However, she can also bring her voice to a delicate sweetness that other dramatic sopranos find difficult. This album is put together particularly well. I love her Carmen and Isolde here, but I cannot stop listening to the other songs either, the non-operatic ones included. This my favorite CD, and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone considering the purchase.
Amazing.... if you get it somewhere else.......2006-05-28
I got it for HKD $69 in HKV in Hong Kong (which is around 8.70USD)
A MUST HAVE..........2006-02-09
The American soprano Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia (the segregated South) on September 15, 1945 in a family of amateur musicians; her mother a pianist, her father a singer in a local choir.
Norman received a scholarship to Howard University (a historically black university in Washington, D.C.) -NOT INDIANA-, graduating in 1967 with a degree in music. The following year, she won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and in subsequent years performed with various German and Italian opera companies. She returned to the US to make her professional concert debut at Lincoln Center in 1973.
Amazing Voice.......2005-07-06
Jessye Norman has possibly the greatest voice I have ever heard. Being a bass/baritone, I usually shy away from higher voices (especially tenors), but I find this soprano to be flooring. For being a classicaly trained vocalist (she attended Indiana University) Ms. Norman has an incredibly versatile voice. In this album alone, she sings broad French arias, light Mozart, spirituals, and Broadway. Each is done superbly. Out of every track, her rendition of "Ave Maria" is my favorite. She sings it so tenderly and intimately, it is like she is singing it directly in front of you. You will be moved, certainly.
I suggest this CD to everyone, a fan of classical music or not. It is important for everyone to have these songs to relax, calm down, or to just listen to. You would not regret it.

The best collection of Wagner excerpts from Furtwangler.......2005-12-16
In the post-war era Furtwangler left us two Ring cycles from Italy (both very scrapy in execution), a classic Tristan from London, and a somewhat disappointing (to me, at least) Die Walkure from Vienna. Those represent the bulk of his Wagner conducting, since he didn't record many excerpts. This classic EMI set gathers together two hours wroth from 1938 to 1954. Other reviewers have extolled the 2004 remastering, which I compared to the original 1993 "References" release. I didn't hear a revelatory transformation, but it's helpful to have any sonic improvement, particularly in the muzzy early recordings from Berlin.
The Gramophone declared that these excerpts validated Furtwangler's position as the greatest of all Wagner conductors. In their musical depth and emotional wisdom it's hard to disagree, although newcomers may find the tempos too braod, and the orchestral execution is never razor sharp--Furtwangler showed little interest in that.
I think the touchstones would be the opening Tannhauser Over. from 1952, which is in the best sound, and the Tristan Prelude from 1938, which is in the worst. Both draw us into Furtwangler's hypnotic way with Wagner, weaving a complete emotional experience that overarches mere details and passing events. I find it easy to listen past the dated sound; these are readings to sink into for a lifetime. (My only reservation is that Flagstad's Immolation scene from Gotterdammerung, recorded in 1952 when she and Furtwangler made their famous Tristan, seems grand without much regard for specific words or emotions.)
By now the Furtwangler canon has been scoured for more Wagner, and there is a live postwar collection in comparable sound from Testament that serves as the natural mate to these priceless studio recordings. Every scattered performance has been catalogued in the late John Ardoin's invaluable book, "The Furtwangler Record."
This deserves 5 stars, plus!.......2005-08-21
Wilhelm Furtwangler's recordings of Wagner Overtures and Preludes, refurbished by EMI and released in January, 2005, is so good it deserves more than five stars! "How?" you may ask, "can recordings made in the late 1930s, late 1940s/early '50s sound this good?" EMI's engineers have worked marvels, both in restoring the sound so that it is nearly modern, and in equalizing volume levels so the listener doesn't have to adjust volume up and down between tracks, sometimes a problem with compilation discs when different recording locales and orchestras were used.
The performances are all first rate: Furtwangler uses subtle liberties of tempo and nuance - his trademark as a conductor - to produce works of freshness and beauty. Three different orchestras are used: the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and Philharmonia:all sound uniformly excellent. Kirsten Flagstad sings Brunnhilde's Immolation scene with great intensity, and in this track, the Philharmonia is in no way inferior to either Berlin or Vienna Philharmonic.
I had to keep reminding myself listening to Disc 1, Track 1,the TANNHAUSER Overture, that this was made in the era before stereo. From the first bars, this strikes me as very fresh and celebratory, and I'm not a huge Wagner fan: I prefer Overtures and Preludes over complete operas. My advice to anyone, even if you don't think you care for Wagner, is to invest in this: grab it before it goes out of circulation - for under $15.00 you can't go wrong.
Sublimity for the Ages.......2005-07-24
In a strange way, one almost needs to have known these recordings in their previous incarnations to appreciate the miraculous transparency that EMI engineers have achieved in this latest transfer. Having long treasured these performances on LP and their first CD transfer (1993), I was stunned by the immediacy, power, and splendor of the sound. What a jaw-dropping revelation! Who ever dreamt of tracing so many more threads in these complex orchestral tapestries via these classic interpretations?
As for the performances themselves, there are none better -- and there never will be. The only equally sublime Wagner excerpts are also in monophonic sound: check out the superb set of Stokowski's Wagner with the 1920s-40s Philadelphia Orchestra on Andante. Both conductors give us a kind of musicmaking that no one before or since has touched in this repertoire. And within the technical limitations of the times, the recordings admirably capture Wagner's sumptuous sound.
No, the decibel level will not knock you out of your seat. If you want that kind of displacement, you must naturally seek a more recent recording. But grandeur is not merely a function of decibels, and on this recording and Stokowski's you will hear a level of rapport with Wagner's deepest impulses, a grandeur of conception, and a quality of orchestral execution that come through loud and clear as they do nowhere else. Remember, many musicians playing in these recordings studied under Wagner's contemporaries (indeed, in the earliest recordings of both conductors, we are probably even hearing a few people who were children or teenagers during Wagner's final years). As a result, these players absorbed the spirit of the age with their every formative breath. Through these recordings, they effortlessly project intangible qualities to which no later generations can ever lay claim.
My own personal favorites here are the *Lohengrin* Prelude (boasting some of the most ethereal high-string sonorities ever recorded, courtesy of the Vienna Philharmonic -- a pure and perfect evocation of spiritual light descending from on high), the *Tristan* selections, Flagstad's grandly voiced Immolation Scene, and the incomparable *Parsifal* Prelude. *Parsifal* has never been my favorite Wagner opera, but its Prelude easily ranks among the chief glories of music. Never has it sounded more ravishing than it does here, with Furtwängler's patient and probing baton guiding Berlin's flawless execution (oh, those shimmering string tremolos!).
These are just a few personal high points. In reality, nothing falls below superb here -- and the new transfers put us closer to the music than ever before (to mix in a bit of Richard Strauss, Salome has dropped another sonic veil; will the engineers find a way to make her drop still another in the next decade?!). If you want a direct route to the heart of Wagner, this EMI anthology and Andante's five-disc Stokowski set are the royal road to Wagner's kingdom of bliss. I urge you to make the journey.
Wondrous Wagner.......2005-06-09
In this era of limited edition, out-of-print and rapidly disappearing classical CDs, sometimes it is better to wait and see instead of immediately buying a given title. Case in point, these famous Furtwangler recordings of Wagner extracts from the Operas, which have been available for years as a costly import in the EMI "References" series. I struggled off and on for some time about whether or not to buy it, knowing that these are among the very best Wagner performances ever committed to disc (despite their mono sound), but not wanting to pay an arm and a leg for them either. Well now with this inexpensively priced reissue in EMI's "Historical" Series, I can get the best of both worlds. Furtwangler's renditions, made with both the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics between 1949 and 1954, are absolutely fantastic. This is the conductor at his very best, and there are few rivals in this material, even in stereo. In particular, the Tannhauser Overture, Lohengrin Prelude, and Tristan and Parsifal selections are magical. For price and performance, this CD is without peer.

A representative introduction to Furtwängler's art.......2003-02-15
We are not exactly short on recordings by Wilhelm Furtwängler, and for collectors and aficionados of the great German conductor this box of 6 CDs with live recordings from 1944-1953 will undoubtedly be a severe disappointment. The only rarity is the (otherwise unnecessary) Tchaikovsky "Pathétique" from Cairo, 1951. All the rest are reissues and have been released by various labels in different couplings.
This set is therefore mainly destined for anybody wanting a well-programmed and representative introduction to the art of Furtwängler. Except for the already mentioned Tchaikovsky, the "Rapsodie espagnole" by Ravel, and the "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Hindemith, interesting but not really indispensable, the rest of the box is required listening. There are stunningly revelatory cuts of Brahms 2nd (Vienna, 1945), Beethoven's 7th (Berlin, 1953), Schubert's 8th (Berlin, 1952), Bruckner's 8th (Vienna 1944), and a formidable disc of orchestral excerpts from Wagner's operas. On top of that the Vienna 1944 recording of Beethoven's Leonore III is a real killer. The "Haydn Variations" by Brahms, "Manfred" by Schumann, "Don Juan" by Strauss, and the "Symphony" by Franck are equally rewarding.
It goes without saying that the sound quality of these live recordings from the 1940s and 1950s is variable, although within context everything is acceptable and well remastered (There is some serious distortion though in the final movement of the Franck "Symphony").
This set comes in yet a new limited-edition historical series "Original Masters" from Deutsche Grammophon. The liner notes emphasizing the rarity of the recordings (so-called "buried musical treasures") are however to be taken with more than a grain of salt. The presentation of the CDs in paper bags with a transparent cover isn't exactly a great idea either.
Indispensable for those music lovers willing to find out what Wilhelm Furtwängler is all about.

This stunning disc includes the two long love duets from Act III of Siegfried and Act II of Tristan und Isolde (including a new "resolution" that was written into the latter from the Act III "Liebestod"). In Plácido Domingo and Deborah Voigt, Richard Wagner's characters find powerful, vulnerable, almost transcendental exponents. Domingo's voice, of course, is no longer in the freshest bloom of youth. But, if he is not the impossibly ideal 25-year-old Heldentenor about whom one fantasizes singing Siegfried, he brings an authority and sensitivity to the role that sweeps one away. Voigt, too, gets to the heart of the female characters, and sings Brünnhilde with such subtle vulnerability that her moments of powerful exclamation sound as if she is trying to convince herself of their truth. There is no bombast for bombast's sake, and the result is psychologically all the more true. Antonio Pappano, a conductor alive to every nuance of the singers' phrasing, brings a Mediterranean sensuousness to the score, and draws some remarkably luxurious sounds from the Royal Opera House band. The acoustic also gives a wonderful depth to the texture, and the brass especially sounds gorgeous. --Warwick Thompson
Customer Reviews:
Really a delightful album.......2007-01-20
When I bought this CD, I had been looking, in vain, for a certain Chicago Symphony recording, when this item popped up as a "people screwy enough to buy what you're looking for also bought this:" selection. Domingo, the Orchestra, and the music were all a plus, but I'd never really warmed up to Debby Voight. I took a flyer and ordered the CD anyway.
This album, in short, contains performances so beautiful as to make a stone weep!
Domingo, Voight, the Covent Garden Orchestra and Wagner are a sublime combination.
The sole drawback to this CD is EMI's goofy copy protection scheme. It can be defeated with only moderate effort, but does leave a bad taste in one's mouth as regards EMI releases.
Now quit reading these boring reviews, and buy this CD. You won't be sorry.
Voices flowing on currents of sensuous emotion ..........2006-10-17
First of all it would be fair to tell you - putting any of my qualifications of the album under review here in clearer perspective - that I have a special fondness for the 'Barenboim Ring' in all of its aspects, but especially the music as conducted by Daniel Barenboim: the clear instrumental articulation and phrasing combined with the dramatic purposefulness and powerful, 'muscled' orchestral playing of the Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele in top form under maestro Barenboim is IMHO unbeatable. (I also believe his Tristan und Isolde is quite legitimate, and I think it is just beautiful - the same clear and purposefully dramatical playing, which I like.)
Now here we have something quite different!
Where Daniel Barenboim is intent on purposefully underlining the drama that is happening on stage in robust but clearly delineated, freshly articulated musical lines in all of the orchestral 'registers' - a Parthenon or Pantheon in music -, Antonio Pappano is intent on creating more of what I feel as a flowing, sensuous (or even sensual) (under)current of emotions on which the singers float along in flowing musical lines, their voices truly 'voicing' the emotional currents the orchestra expresses in 'one great, heaving voice' of its own. This more sensuous approach is as legitimate as any other, and maybe comes closest to what Wagner meant when he said his singers should sing his lines in a more Italian(ate) manner, with a more flowing legato. Indeed, Pappano and Placido Domingo are an ideal match in this respect, of course, as they both hail from Europe's southerly regions steeped in Italian operatic tradition.
And Deborah Voight matches excellently with Placido Domingo, I believe, both of them singing their legato lines with heroic, but at the same time sensually seductive, tones and in burnished colors. Quite different from, for example, Anne Evans' Brunnhilde and Siegfried Jerusalem's Siegfried in the 'Barenboim Ring', but maybe balm to the ears for those who want to hear his Wagner 'differently'.
Anyway, the sheer opulent beauty of tone is especially convincing (and seductive) in the duets/pieces from Tristan und Isolde, I think. But at the same time something strange happens on this recording with this more flowingly 'Italianate' approach under this conductor and with these singers: the harsher, darker, brooding sentiments (these lovers are destined to die!) are downplayed somewhat, it seems - at least to the ears of this particular listener.
This album is for pure, sensuous listening pleasure, bringing Wagner in more refined shades of color and with finer orchestral nuances of light and shadow than we have come used to in Wagner, maybe. This is also result of the recording as such, which blends the orchestral colors nicely together in a warm and sonorous soundstage.
Together with the later album of Antonio Pappano and Placido Domingo, 'Scenes from the Ring', this is a magnificent way to sample a 'different Wagner', bathing in 'warmer lights from the South'. Wagner could only love it, couldn't he? Anyway, this album - together with its 'Scenes from the Ring' counterpart - is highly recommended, and certainly invaluable for those, like I myself, who love Domingo in Wagner.
Made me like Wagner.......2006-07-05
Before I bought this CD, I didn't care much for Wagner. But after listening to these two extraordinary artists sing these entrancing duets, I must say that I have a new found respect and fondness for Wagner's music. Placido Domingo isn't a singer that most people associate with Wagnerian roles, and alot of people scoff at the idea of him singing such roles. But on this CD, his voice is absolutely entrancing, especially in the duet from Tristan und Isolde. Even though he is getting up there in years, his voice is still utterly beautful. His high notes are still strong and powerful and lovely, his interpretations are superb. Deborah Voigt, the up and coming Wagnerian/Strauss Soprano, is very powerful and strong in her singing here, yet she's also very ladylike. Not having an overwhelming, imposing voice that alot of the dramatic sopranos have, but still having the strenght, stamina, and authority in her voice to sing these grand roles. I guess what I'm trying to say is that she's a well-balanced singer. Not to mention that her voice is very very lovely and pretty, having a golden timbre, and a fluttery vibrato, which I love in a singer. The orchestra, in my opinion, is probably one of the Top 5 best orchestras I've ever heard. Absolutely gorgeous playing. An added bonus is the Mezzo-Soprano Violetta Urmano in the role of Brangane. I had never heard of her before I bought this CD, but she has a delicious voice, with a very rich quality to it. Even though she is a Mezzo, I would like to hear her sing the role of Isolde sometime. She has the perfect voice for it. This would be a good CD to give someone to introduce them to Wagner. It is lovely in every way.
Less Heavy Wagner Pure Soul.......2005-05-07
Placido Domingo, now in his sixties, is not ready to call it quits. He has added Wagner into his repertoire, and in fact has sung (on stage and record) the Wagner heroes of Tannhauser, Lohengrin and Parsifal. In November this year, he will sing Parsifal at the LA Opera. Now, I personally think that he can sing Tristan, as he does here, in its entirety and it would be heavenly if he sang next to Deborah Voight's Isolde. However, all we have is this "concert version" for now. Domingo's voice has been criticized for not sounding "Wagnerian" in the traditional sense. So what ? He doesnt have that annoying "Bayreuth bark" and he is certainly no Jon Vickers, but he has integrity, discipline and soul. There is no doubt his mellow, flowing, gorgeous voice would make his heroes sound particularily spiritual, even if it lacks the intensity and vigor that other interpretors give to their Wagner characters. Perhaps Wagner didn't intend for his heroes to be too melodramatic. They are all introspective, spiritual seekers, all on quests to find something greater than themselves or searching for redemption. Tristan is without a doubt the most challenging and difficult role for a dramatic tenor, just as Isolde is the most difficult part for a dramatic soprano. This is because it seems that to Wagner, Tristan and Isolde represented the Uberman and the Uberwoman, the heighest and most powerful form of male and female.
But Voigt and Domingo pull it off, simply out of their artistry and the relaxed vocal spirit that resonates between them. They are both great artists with a lot of admiration for each other and their voices are glorious. Please don't be put off by the fact their voices are "lighter" in the Wagnerian style. This is terrific music. Conductor Pappano makes a wonderful interpretation of Wagner's music, which he suffuses with tone color and sumptuous lyric lines linked together by the mystic "Tristan chord" which dominates the work. The Liebestod, wow. What more can be said ? Is it simply a musical orgasm or is it the transfiguration of Isolde from life to death, a great transformation of soul ? The music is sublime.
Domingo .......2005-02-19
I am pretty sure Domingo's fans are over-excited with these reviews.Really, Domingo's voice is not suited for wagnerian drama, is an uneven, cold and boring voice. Indeed, these love duets are far from the "passionate" characters called Tristan and Siegfried.

Customer Reviews:
It's not just music!.......2006-11-28
I was sorely disappointed...the entire CD is littered with commentary about the music by the English horn player. While the information she provides is potentially interesting to some listeners, I was wanting a music selection of dedicated English horn music. I found the (lengthy) verbal excerpts distracting and irritating to the point that I never listened to the CD again after it's initial run.
The music is great, though, when it's actually playing, despite the fact that you don't get the entire piece...

Customer Reviews:
Just the best of the best........2006-02-08
From all the compilations of Maria Callas EMI has issued this is BY FAR the best one.
Unlike her studio recitals, unequal and mostly recorded when her voice was starting to decay, this live records take you back to the glorious early fifties when the young Callas was changing the history of opera forever.
The first 6 CD's are scenes from stage performances and the last 2 from recitals.
Chronollogically, this compilation starts with the legendary (and controversial) 1951 Mexico-City "Aida" and ends with the 1964 Covent Garden "Tosca" (when Callas' voice was just the shade of itself but at the peak of her dramatic skills).
Listen to the electrifying poetry of the 1952 "La sonnambula", to the devorating flame of 1955 "La traviata" and "Lucia". Not to forget the 1952 "Norma", the 1957 "Ana Bolena" and some rarities like "Andrea Chénier", "Ifigenia in Tauride" and "Poliuto".
The only great absent of this collection is "Armida"...
As for the the 2 recital CD's, the first one contains arias from concerts between 1952 and 1958, when Callas was in full command of her voice. Nobody else was capable of singing arias from Nabucco and Lakmé on the same recital! And listen to the last aria: Wagner's Isolde's dead.
The second one, contains arias from 1959 to 1963. Here, Callas voice had diminished considerably and she was not anymore capable of the same technical miracles, but she still managed to give thrilling dramatical interpretations (listen to the dead scene of Madama Butterfly of the 1963 Paris recital!!!)
In 80% of this compilation you can hear the young Callas creating her own legend, giving herself completly on the stage.

Customer Reviews:
Stokowski In His Element.......2006-06-10
While I am not partial to Wagner or Liszt, the glory of these performances is found in the compositions of Enescu and Smetana. Often dismissed because of his theatricality, here Stokowski shines with brilliance in music so suited to his flamboyant, some would say gushy, nature. The Moldau flows beautifully along its varied course under this capable baton, filled with the vitality of a first-time hearing of this familiar but wonderful standard. Not so well known to all is the Enescu Roumanian Rhapsody. Stokowski imbues such diverse coloration and rhythmic insistance as to mesmerise on each listening. More than an historical document, these recordings could well become your favorite performances of these works. Though recorded before the age of DDD digital techniques, the sound is brilliant, realistic and energizing. Available in both hybrid SACD and standard CD formats. Most highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Of Karajan At A Cheap Price! Wow!.......2005-08-15
Close to perfect, really, if at least one track included Beethoven's Ninth Symphony "Ode To Joy" or other Karajan-conducted slow movements from symphonies. Also if Ravel's Bolero or Debussy's La Mer were on here. This is truly an incomparable collection at the very affordable price of about 2-3 dollars. Karajan's magical interpretations of adagios are gloriously showcased. Karajan was without a doubt the greatest conductor immediately after the loss of Arturo Toscanini, who is still hailed as the number one conductor of all time. Karajan, like Toscanini, were giants of classical music, making the music such a powerful and emotional experience that it was as if they had written the pieces themselves. Karajan was so involved with the music he conducted that he was able to conduct with his eyes closed. He FELT the music and was genuinely passionate about conducting. In adagios, the more relaxed, sustained and lyrical aspects of the music is exposed as is the more graceful conducting of Karajan.
The music included here is the moving and very Italianate Intermezzo from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni. Karajan really delivers here and is a fine first track to begin with. It's followed by the elegantly-executed Barcarolle, complete with nocturnal and watery modes from the Offenbach opera, The Tales of Hoffman. The Love Theme from the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky is priceless music and Tchaikovsky really steps up the emotional impact of the work. More charming and genteel phrasing is used in the music for the ballet Les Sylphides, with music from Chopin arranged for orchestra and for the Romanza in Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
I have never heard the true "Moldau" by Smetana until I heard it here. Under Karajan's baton, the river comes alive and the journey is much more compelling. The theme for the Young Prince and Princess from Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" is simply gorgeous, full of romantic Russian-ism. Karajan takes us to the time of Holberg in Grieg's Holberg Suite in a fine interpretation of the Sarabande. Karajan conducting Dvorak's String Serenade in E major is noble. The final tracks are perhaps the most musically masterful, eventhough all the previous pieces were well-executed even if they are not bigger in scope. The Carmen music- Overture and Preludes are remarkable. Karajan is in fine form and the music is crisp, powerful and colorful. Karajan knew Carmen. How this proudly Austrian man knew how to bring out the magnetism of a French piece like Carmen is beyond me. He in fact conduced the best Carmen performances at the Salzburg Festival, the ones with Grace Bumbry and Jon Vickers in the late 60's.
Finally, the last piece is the Liebestod, the Finale from Wagner's great opera Tristan and Isolde. Now, if anything, get this cheap album for that !! You have not heard the Liebestod until you've heard it conducted by Karajan. In this recording, he is already a seasoned conductor with years of experience since his young conductor days in the 3
