Still probably the most magical recording ever of The Magic Flute, this starrily cast production featured the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich as Tamino, Evelyn Lear as a wonderfully sympathetic Pamina, Roberta Peters as a regal Queen of the Night (surprisingly good coloratura, if a little light at the top), Wagnerians James King and Martti Talvela as the two armed men (imagine that!), and of course, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, in one of his finest operatic outings, as an engagingly earnest Papageno. Behind it all, the marvelously astute Karl Böhm and the Berlin Philharmonic are in top form. The 1964 stereo is first rate. --Ted Libbey

Male voices top, female voices flop.......2007-05-25

To get the real feeling for the charme of "Die Zauberflöte", you need at least two recordings: This one under Böhm is magnificent for its male voices. Nobody can beat Wunderlich as Tamino, Fischer-Dieskau as Papageno, and Crass as Sarastro. The female voices, with the exception of Lisa Otto as Papagena, are not up to the mark, though. Evelyn Lear as Pamina is lacking in brilliance, especially in the duets when she has to stand comparison with her male counterparts. Roberta Peter's singing as Queen of the Night is somewhat extreme. You get used to it after some time, but her timbre is void of beauty and her coloratura shaky at times.

What can be made of the female roles becomes clear when you listen to Klemperer's recording on EMI (also from the early 1960s, like Böhm's). Gundula Janowitz is probably the most beautiful Pamina on disc and Lucia Popp is supreme as Queen of the Night. The three ladies with Schwarzkopf, Ludwig and Höffgen are lovely and sheer luxury. But then Klemperer was less lucky with his male voices: Nicolai Gedda as Tamino and Walter Berry as Papageno sing well but remain pale when compared with Wunderlich and Fischer-Dieskau. Gottlob Frick performs with a lot of warmth, but is clearly beyond his prime when it comes to technique.

So, to experience the full potential of this marvellous opera, there is no way out: You need both the Böhm and the Klemperer version! On its own, neither one is fully satisfactory - but still better than most recent productions!

No entiendo: Porque está tan barato este CD??
Es una de las mejores versiones de "La flauta" que he escuchado, el dúo final de Papageno y Papagena es de lo más rico que he escuchado en Opera y la reyna de la noche no desmerece en absoluta junto a otras afamadas coloraturas, aunque yo personalmente prefiero como interpretá el célebre papel la Deutekom.
La orquestación es correcta y el resto del elenco cumple cabálmente, mi conclusión ya la puse al principio de estos párrafos, ¿qué estás esperando?

The Best Magic Flute Recording.......2000-03-07

I think this is the best recording of The Magic Flute. So many of the singers are absolutely magnificent. Fritz Wunderlich has a beautiful full lyric tenor voice that is perfect for the magical Tamino he creates. Franz Crass is a profoundly noble Sarastro. Roberta Peters is unbelievable as the Queen of the Night. I have heard many coloratura sopranos sing that role and I think she is the best. Her Fs above high C are spectacular and she is very dramatic,especially when she sings her second aria demanding that her daughter Pamina murder Sarastro and goes into fiery coloratura. I think Roberta Peters is the best singer in the world. I would love to find out what her highest note is. Lisa Otto is delightful as Papagena, and Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau brings a lot of earthly humor to the role of Papageno. Mozart's music is pure genuis, and I think this opera is his greatest work.

Buy this recording for June Anderson's performance.......2007-07-31

Although I already had had several full length recordings of this opera, I bought this one especially to hear June Anderson. Many opera buffs boast that Lucia Popp's Queen of the Night is the greatest of all, but I have been only impressed with Popp's interpretation of the 2nd aria "Der Hoelle Rache" and not as much with the 1st aria "O Zittre Nicht." While it is true that Popp really hammers out those high E flats and F's and also satisfies in the 2nd aria, I think that she misses much of the pathos and tenderness that is required in the first. June Anderson, however, has it all. Like Popp, she has extraordinary power in the upper registers, quite rare for a coloratura. But what truly differentiates June Anderson's interpretation is the varied expressiveness. The pathos of the Queen's character shines through clearly, but her character reversal is dramatic by the second aria. She sings the whole 2nd aria with tremendous power, but she still holds back her fortissimo until the final high B flat, which really caps off her whole performance.

If you buy the Highlights version of this recording, you will still get to hear both arias with June Anderson, so in my opinion it's not worth buying the longer version. But you get a lot for your money with the Highlights CD just because of the two arias with Anderson. In order to appreciate the opera in its entirety, I'd suggest to listen to the Popp/Gedda/Klemperer recording.

A Wonderful Compilation .......2007-01-11

I consider this recording to be surely one of the best on CD of the Magic Flute. Everyone is in excellent voice. June Anderson's top notes ring out with great strength and freedom as the Queen of the Night, and her coloratura work in the first act aria, "O zittre nicht", is exquisitely beautiful and the highpoint of the CD. Jerry Hadley does a fine lyric job as Tamino (I was surprised). Barbara Hendricks' lovely voice is perfectly suited for the role of Pamina, which she sings admirably. Robert Lloyd sings Sarastro with an impressively strong and deep voice, and Thomas Allen does a wonderful job as Papageno. In addition, you get a whopping 77 minutes of all-digital music and a booklet with the background of the opera and pictures of the singers. What a deal! The one fault in the whole opera, though, is that Sir Charles Mackerras takes Pamina's aria "Ach, ich fuhl's" a little too quickly, giving some convoluted historical reason for the faster tempo in the booklet's notes.

Outstanding Flute!.......2001-03-17

This "highlights" version of the Magic Flute is all you need!(unless you are interested in the dialogues, in which case you may buy the same complete version). The performance is stunning and very well recorded (the sound is impeccable). Karin Ott sings a beautiful Queen of the Night, her coloratura is cristal-clear, very agile and charming. Francisco Araiza's warm and tender voice is perfect for the role of Pamino. The rest of the cast and the chorus are simply perfect. Karajan's understanding of the work allows for beautiful conduction; he achieves the best from the orchestra and the performers. Definitely worth it!

Deutekom, superb.......2005-10-01

Just to say I can't help listening once and over again Christina Deutekom's magical and breathtaking performance of both arias. Never have I heard any other performance of those feared notes that can be anyhow compared to her extraordinary and unbeatable technique. She hits the higher notes distinctively and with such incomparable power that spells the listener with her menacing message. I have spent ages trying to find the best Queen of the night ever and, here admitting I found other extrardinary performers (Popp, Gruberova, Jo) Deutekom's large voice and unique self-assurance makes her contribution to the Magic Flute touch the realm of perfection. Something to worship and, without any doubt, to respect as a joy...forever.

A Classic Magic Flute.......2004-12-05

This is my second choice for the greatest Magic Flute recording. George Solti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic with majesty, spirituality, beauty, magic and light-hearted melody. Stars tenor Stuart Burrows as Tamino, Pilar Lorengar as Pamina, Herman Prey as Papageno, Marti Talvela as Sarastro and making a sensational Queen of the Night is Christina Deutekom. This recording is among one of the best you'll find. It is a classic and traditional interpretation and hearing it one would assume this is the way Mozart intended for it to sound. The cast is perfect, the acting right on target, the sound is sublime.

The Magic Flute is truly Mozart's greatest opera. It was written when he was deathly ill and it's possible he wanted to leave the world with one final masterpiece. In his deathbed, he was heard saying he wish he could hear The Magic Flute being sung to him as he died. There is a timeless magic and melancholy in the work, a work as serious as it can be whimsical. Sarastro's arias are divine, like the voice of God singing about wisdom, truth and peace. Marti Talvela has a beautiful bass voice and his "In Diese Hall" and "O Isis and Osiris" are incredible. The greatest ideals of the Masons, which Mozart was part of, are expressed as well as the most noble and humane beliefs of the Enlightenment, which Mozart was definately a figure head of. Christina Deutekom, the polar opposite of Sarastro, is a scheming and vicious witch. Notice how sweetly she sings the first aria "O Zittre Nicht" an aria intended to deceive Tamino into thinking she's on the side of good. The coloratura is lazer-perfect. In the Vengeance Aria "Der Holle Rache" she shows her real colors.

Deutekom sings with dramatic intensity and fury, without sacrificing the brilliant coloratura high F's. This is how the Queen ought to be sung. It is not a pretty song that ought to be sung pretty. She's given her daughter Pamina a dagger and is ordering her to kill Sarastro, the good and noble Jesus figure, or she will completely disown her. Other than Deutekom, Edda Moser sings in this same way with intensity and rage. Pilar Lorengar is not my first choice for Pamina (I prefer Anneliese Rothenberger) but Lorengar has a sweet and innocent quality to her voice which makes her a suitable Pamina. Stuart Burrows' lyric tenor voice is appropriate for the romantic prince Tamino. The famous mezzo-soprano Ivonne Minton makes a cameo as one of the Three Ladies. Herman Prey as Pagapeno is a treat, funny and witty. This is one of the better versions. The first, though, on my list is Wolfgang Sawallisch's 1973 version with Rothenberger, Peter Schreir, Walter Berry, Kurt Moll and Edda Moser. That is the all time best with the greatest Mozartian thought and care.

Great Singers ... Poor Casting.......2000-01-07

Searching for the definitive recording of "The Magic Flute"?

Simply put: Search elsewhere.

There's no denying the talent of singers Samuel Ramey, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Cheryl Studer, but in this case they seem to have been the victims of a casting disaster. Despite the admirable efforts of Sir Neville Marriner and the singers themselves, the major roles seem unbalanced. Ramey, although one of the great basses of our time, lacks both the generosity of tone and basso profundo sound needed to fill Sarastro's arias. As a result, the role loses the majesty and solidity required to foil the Queen of the Night. On the other hand, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's voice seems all too mature for the role of Pamina. Te Kanawa's beautiful full lyric sound seems misplaced in this opera. Te Kanawa executes a solid interpretation of the aria "Ach, ich fühl's", but the weight of her voice undermines Pamina's youth, purity and naïveté - qualities vital to the vulnerability and believability of the piece.

Cheryl Studer's Queen of the Night is a third and near-fatal blow to the production. Studer's robust sound seems shoehorned into the role. Her coloratura often sounds forced and uncomfortable. Pitch and rhythm also fall under attack due to the vocal gymnastics required by the role. In a word, her "Der Holle Rache" is frightening and her arpeggio up to the high-F sounds completely unnatural. This is unfortunate because Studer has an incredible instrument capable of great power and agility. I would definitely recommend her recordings of Verdi, but this performance doesn't do justice to herself or to Mozart.

Ironically the rest of the recording is pretty good, but with the multitude of Magic Flute recordings available, I would encourage buyers to look elsewhere. Suggestions? I happen to enjoy the Harnoncourt recording on the TELDEC label. Both the full opera and "Highlights" version are available.
