Great for kids!.......2007-06-27

I'm generally not a fan of music "samplers," but opera can be tough to introduce to children. And hey--even adults played cards, ate, and talked through the recitative sections of the early operas while they waited for the next aria! So I feel that getting kids hooked on opera through great arias probably can't hurt (the next 10 years or so will determine whether I'm right or not). My 4-year-old loves this CD; it's a delight to watch her imitate Anna Moffo (the sincerest form of flattery, for sure). Highly recommended resource for introducing young kids to opera. More top picks: Siberell's Bravo! Brava! A Night at the Opera, and the Black Dog Opera Library CDs.

Mediocre Sound Quality.......2007-03-31

If you note the album was released in 1994, and includes selections from many years prior, you will understand that the quality of the sound engineering is not going to dazzle your ear.

It's a very nice collection to hum along to, but don't expect shivers down your spine as the sound quality is not sufficient to reproduce the dynamic range of these voices.

I am by no means an opera expert, but found this to be a wonderful CD. Along with the songs I already knew I liked (such as a song from Carmen,) I found many others I enjoyed. In fact, Samson et Dahlila turned out to be my favorite. If you are just getting started or at any point in your adventure of opera, I would recommend this one.

Okay But.... - a review of "The Most Famous Opera Arias".......2006-08-18

My daughter (6 y.o.) and I like opera; but sitting for two hours to watch Turandot is just not within the realm of possibilities for my 4 year old son right now... so I was looking for an opera CD for the car. He will sit and listen to short arias.

This was the first we purchased and it is okay but not great.

Problem #1 - where is Wagner. No Wagner?
Problem#2 - Elena Obraztsova - she sounds like Carmen's grandmother. Rather matronly for a vixen (imho--lol)

Three Stars. [C+] Great Price and good sound quality for the car. The operatic styles of some of the performers are antiquated and frilly sounding, but I would probably buy this CD again.

Note: We purchased and really preferred "The # 1 Opera Album". It has more selections and better artists in our opinion. Also it's a two CD set. Just something to consider.

Buy this CD, especially if you're a Baltsa fan!.......2002-02-12

This has to have one of the best renditions of "Una Voce Poco Fa" I've heard. I can assure anyone buying it that it is worth it! The arias on the CD are wonderfully performed by Ms. Baltsa, and I find that this is the favorite CD in my collection so far. The price seems steep, but I assure you...the album is worth its weight in gold.

This CD is definitely one of my favourites. Never have I heard Rossini sung with such delicacy. The Cavalleria aria, which Baltsa recorded when she was probably not even condsidering yet to perform the part on stage, is sung with such heart-felt emotion that we can only be grateful that the added the role to her repetoire some years later. Listening to her Lady Macbeth makes one wonder why on earth she has still refused to add this part to her repetoire, too. Hers must certainly be the voice Verdi so desperately wanted for this part!

Like Callas, Baltsa sometimes prefers 'giving it all' to simply singing beautifully. Bless her for that!

Marvelous soprano.......2001-01-02

Karajan was right, Anna Tomowa-Sintow is a rare and wonderful artist. This adorable soprano has a creamy, full-toned spinto sound that can take her from Verdi to Wagner or from Strauss to Puccini with equal ease. But it is her sincerity, her big-hearted singing that sets her apart. It is a pity that Karajan didn't use her for his Ballo in Maschera recording, since she gives a compelling account of Amelia's first aria here.

Anna Tomowa-Sintow should have been a SuperStar.......2000-12-30

This recital disc is among my favorite soprano recitals I own, and I have quite a few.. Tomowa-Sintow's voice is one of unique beauty. I have yet to encounter another voice that reminds me of her voluptuous timbre. She easily surmounts the lush phrases of Richard Strauss, and Wagner, and tackles the agility of Mozart's music with the same ease. I particularly love her in Verdi roles where she is able to make use of both the dramatic and agile aspects of her voice. The music chosen for this recital perfectly displays her versatility, her strengths. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to discover a soprano, or for those who are already familiar with Anna Tomowa-Sintow and want a disc that demonstrates her best singing.

Over 50 minutes from a great Bass.......2000-10-22

Kurt Moll is in my opinion the best bass I know. His voice has a clear articulation which makes his interpretation of a piece unique. I have heared many basses and with all of them, except Moll I had to have the libretto in-front of me to understand the words. With Moll I do not need to. In this CD he is marvelous and his interpretation unique. I particularly liked the German version of 'Madamina, il catalogo e questo' ('Schoene Donnia, hier ist genau der Register') on which I had some doubts due to the fact that it was in German; however Moll with his superb voice crushed all my doubts and makes me now like the German version more than the Italian! He is also very good in the two 'Der Freischutz' excerpts as well as in 'Der Meistersinger' and in 'The Barber of Bagdad'. The CD containing some less known pieces is an excellent introduction for a beginner and an absolute enjoyment for the professional; all from a really great Bass.

Great stuff from the german bass.......1999-03-05

Kurt Moll's voice is perhaps not as rich in texture and polish as some other famous post-war basses (Frick, Talvela, Ghiaurov). It is not crystal clear like the voice of f.i. Lazlo Polgar, the hungarian bass. It is rather veiled, velvety, "smoky" like old whiskey or something. "Black velvet" it is written in the liner notes, and that's a pretty accurate description. But Moll wields it with amazing ease and flexibility, and has a phenomenal breathing technique (listen to the arias from "The Entführung aus dem Serail") to go with it. He has no troubles with the profundo parts of either Osmins or Kaspars (Cornelius) arias, and offers very good versions of famous Wagner-stuff (Meistersinger, Fliegende Holländer). Clearly an intelligent and serious artist, Moll is absolutely worth listening to!

Not mentioned in the description this is a DDD recording and you can hear the difference! Plus there is over 2 hours of well chosen selections. The 29 minutes representing The Magic Flute are truly outstanding.

This album offers a great selection of arias, most versatile, and most exiting. Fassbaender as a very unique performer offers us a selection starting with Handel and taking you all the way to Thaikovsky and Wagner. In every aria she offers a great depth, style,passion anything you can possibly think of. Her Carmen is full of fire and elegance, her Romeo is a true most beautiful belcanto full of passion, her Joan of Arc gives you chilles. This CD is a great example of most versatile artistry, hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Individual style and superb singing.......1999-05-20

Fassbaender is a unique artist. She has a warm and very expressive Mezzo-soprano voice, which can create moments of burning intensity. Her interpretations are never boring or predictable, and her distinctive way with especially the text, is not to everyone's taste. You will get some old favourites such as Delilah and Charlotte (Werther) and a hefty chunk of beautifully sung Wagner. The Mozart and Handel trouser roles avoid verly famous arias. There are few repertoire surprises; mostly some beautiful Tchaikovsky and Bellini not often recorded. I love this disc, and I love this artist. Listen to it first to see if you like the voice. I love the searching quality, and the singing is always dramatically moving.

BUY IT!!!.......2006-10-02

This is a short CD, but it is WELL worth the price, simply for the "original version" of Zerbinetta's scena from "Ariadne auf Naxos". WOW! It is breathtaking! I know there is a DVD of this version sung by Sills, but I am just not a fan...Gruberova shines!!! The other pieces are also well done. I have recently become very interested in this fine singer - you must buy this disc if you love beautiful high notes!
