Well, this IS one of the great recordings, of the Wagnerian (recorded) past. Leider is exceptional, and Melchior is even-MORE so. The excerpts (with Sir Thomas Beecham) show what the best (vocal/orchestral) could do with the best inspirations of the Wagnerian language, and Leider & Melchior are, simply UNsurpassed .. in any attempt .. past, present or (maybe) future. This is ONE of the examples of the "old days" of recordings, that IS indispensable. IMHO.

    5 out of 5 stars Excitement regenerated........2004-01-20

The original producer of these recordings, Fred Gaisberg, wrote in his 1947 autobiography, "Albert Coates .....with whom I carried out hundreds of adventurous session when the amazing electrical process first came in".

This splendid double CD allows C21st listeners to hear some of these "adventurous sessions". There is certainly a sense of excitement here, possibly deriving from the realization that the amazing electrical process allowed orchestral sonorities to be heard as something like the real thing. Recent remastering and processing for this "Great Conductors" series makes them seem even more amazing than they sounded originally. Happily, the recordings were made in two of the world's best recording venues: London's Queen's Hall and Kingsway Hall.

Of course, the focus in this series is on the conductor. On the evidence of these recordings, he tended to favor fast speeds. Music from his native Russia is well represented on the first CD, including a robust performance of Borodin's Second Symphony. The "Francesca da Rimini" is slightly cut. From the dozens of Wagner recordings he directed, the famous "Tristan" duet with Leider and Melchior has been selected, partly recorded in Berlin.

Both CDs are filled to capacity.

5 out of 5 stars Great Conductors of 20th Century= Best Reissues of the 21st.......2003-04-02

It's sad that the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" reissue series has not gotten more notice on Amazon and in other places, because it has my vote for the best reissue program thus far of the 21st Century. Drawing from the archives of all the major classical labels (EMI, Sony, BMG, DG, Decca, Philips, Supraphon, etc.), EMI and IMG Artists have assembled a wonderful series of affordable two-disc sets by the leading conductors of the last century. And unlike its counterpart, "The Great Pianists of the 20th Century," which are basically compilations of material already available on other CDs, the "Great Conductors" features rare and, for the most part, previously unreleased performances!

This particular CD, Volume 17, features Albert Coates, one of the great pre-World War II conductors, and a figure who has been virtually forgotten, not to mention woefully underrepresented on CD. As the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that these two discs feature all mono performances from 1926-30 with the London Symphony Orchestra made for HMV. They are among the earliest of electrical recordings, but the sound is remarkable considering their age. The performances of Borodin's Symphony No. 2, Tchaikovsky's "Francesca da Rimini," Ravel's "La Valse," Wagner's "Tannhauser" Overture, and Strauss' "Tod und Verklarung" are nothing short of magical. It is awful that Coates' association with HMV seemingly ended in 1932, and that others didn't ask him to record for them. According to the CD's liner notes, Coates stayed in the USA for most of WWII, then went to South Africa where he taught and made occasional appearances until his death in 1953.

Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded. Chances are, since stores are offering increasingly homogenized classical music sections, this conductor isn't even in your collection. And that would truly be a shame.

5 out of 5 stars The lost art of the Wagnerian Heldenbariton.......2001-12-16

Friedrich Schorr (1888-1953) was the greatest Wagnerian bass-baritone of the "golden age" of Wagner singing in the inter-war years of the Twenties and Thirties which included Melchior, Leider, Lehmann, Rethberg, and Flagstad. Many good judges consider him the greatest Wagnerian bass-baritone of the twentieth century--his only competition comes from the much earlier Emil Fisher (1838-1914) and perhaps from his contemporary Rudolf Bockelmann (1892-1958). Born in Hungary, he studied in Vienna and Brno, made his debut in Graz as the Die Walkure Wotan in 1912 to great success, earning the novice singer a four-year contract. Then he sang in Prague (1916), Cologne (1918-1923), and the Berlin State Opera (1923-32). He visited New York in 1923 and was engaged by the Metropolitan (debut there in Tannhauser in 1924), where he sang for twenty seasons, most often the great Wagner roles, in which he had no peer; he was especially esteemed for his Dutchman, Hans Sachs, and Wotan. He also appeared frequently at Covent Garden (1924-1933), at Bayreuth (where he was the regular Wotan from 1925-1931), at the Vienna State Opera (1923 and 1929-1936), and in San Francisco (1931-1938). He moved to the U. S. permanently after the rise of the Nazis. Since he retired from the Met in 1943, there has been no one to take his place.

The Metropolitan Opera Encyclopedia, ed. David Hamilton, says of him: "Without question the greatest Wagnerian bass-baritone of his time, Schorr was equally impressive in Wotan's scornful rages and Sachs's tenderness; his noble, smooth, resonant voice functioned well at all dynamic levels, and his diction was precise, authoritative, and finely colored. Extensive passages from his major roles are well preserved on recordings."

Indeed they are, and we have the best of them here. This marvelous two-CD all-Wagner collection, released in 1994 and containing almost two and a half hours of music (over 73 minutes on each CD), is a feast of exemplary Wagner bass-baritone singing, probably the best ever put on record. The processing and annotation are first-rate, as is typical of the estimable Austrian label Preiser, which with its fine "Lebendige Vergangenheit" ("Living Past") series has done much to preserve and make available the legacy of great singers of the past. The recordings here (1927 to 1931) are all HMV and Victor studio electrical recordings and all represent Schorr in his prime; all are object lessons in how these Wagner roles should be sung. Schorr's Dutchman (Der fliegende Hollander), Wolfram (Tannhauser), and Gunther (Gotterdammerung) are all represented, but the lion's share of the space here goes appropriately to Wotan (Das Rheingold, DieWalkure) and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger), his two greatest roles.

Some think of Wagner singing as primarily loud, strenuous, and declamatory, and there have been Wagner singers who have fostered this impression. But the greatest Wagner singers give the lie to this notion, and this is nowhere better exemplified than in the singing of Schorr: he has the power for the climaxes and can declaim with authority, but what impresses most is the smoothness of his legato, the mellifluous ease and naturalness of his vocal production throughout his range and at varying dynamic levels, the absence of strain in his singing. He makes it sound as natural and easy as opening his mouth. His singing is wonderfully expressive, but he makes all his dramatic points by purely vocal means. "O du mein holder Abendstern" from Tannhauser is as close to a traditional Italian aria as Wagner's operas provide, and Schorr's caressing performance of it is as close as Wagnerian singing comes to bel canto. Collateral benefits in this set include some other superb Wagnerians: the great Frida Leider in several selections from Die Walkure (including her thrilling Brunnhilde's Battle Cry), Lauritz Melchior, Elisabeth Rethberg, and a stunningly beautiful Die Meistersinger quintet in which the hauntingly lovely singing of Elisabeth Schumann (she sings with instrumental precision and control) floats magically above the other voices.

If you are interested in the great Wagner singers, in the history of Wagnerian singing, or if you simply want to hear how these roles can sound in their optimum interpretations, this set is indispensable. No one sang these roles better than Schorr, and for the last sixty years no one has sung them as well.

5 out of 5 stars Early and Very Rare Acoustic Leider.......2007-07-13

For many opera lovers of the early thirties Frida Leider was the sine qua non of Wagnerian sopranos. The appearance of Kirsten Fladstad offered Met-goers a once in a century opportunity - the chance to hear what were very likely the two greatest Wagnerian sopranos of a century back-to-back over the course of two decades. In hindsight we can understand how impossibly spoiled these opera-goers became, a situation that was certainly not improved in following decades when other great Wagnerians, such as Helen Trauble and later Brigit Nilsson, appeared at the Met. Today we have nothing like such singers, and there are no signs the dearth of great Wagner leads, either female or male, will be abating.
This particular CD offers recordings made during the first half of the 1920's at the beginning of Frida Leider's career. Presier's CD keeps up the companies reputation for excellent sources well processed. We're unlikely to hear better CD tracks from this time. Leider's quality of singing, projecting the emotion behind the words without inflicting the line with Verisimo effects, holding a nice cantabile when necessary, imparting nobility and dignity without a loss of spontaneity, and most importantly, reaching out to her audience with a unique and telling voice - all these traits are here already apparent in her singing. Later she would add in addition a greater scale and an urgent mesmerizing grasp of lyrics. But she is already at this point in the twenties a wonderful singer and redoubtable dramatist.
I believe she was the favorite singer of the noted opera critic and consummate connoissuer of early opera, Richard Bebb.
It's easy to understand why - few singers bring more to their art, or leave us with greater rewards in listening.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2007-07-13

If you love opera and have yet to hear recordings made by Frida Leider you are in for a treat. As poignant a dramatic singer as ever graced the stage, she remains for many of us, myself included, the ultimate Wagnerian dramatic soprano. Without the mind-numbing pyrotechnic heights of such vocal titans as Nordica, Flagstad or more recently Brigit Nilsson, Leider remains the voice I hear when I think of Isolde - one of limitless compassion, and unequalled and unqualified love.
Leider made both acoustic and electrical recordings, the earlier are rare and difficult to locate as originals. This issue gives you a chance to hear her in her prime, and enjoy Wagner singing of the very highest order.

5 out of 5 stars Worth more than 5 stars!.......2007-05-14

Not much need be said about this collection and the ravishing voice of Leider and her associates here. The sound is very good for its age, the singers come through very well. Find a copy if you can!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Wagner performances.......2001-08-08

This two-cd set presents very interesting Furtwangler's recordings of pre-war and war time. The first disk contains much more valueable recordings than the second one. These are Lohengrin act 3 extracts with fantasic singing of Volker and Muller and glorious conducting by Furtwangler, excellent Tannhauser ouverture and exciting Parsifal prelude act 1. Sound quality is very different from noisy to good enough as recordings cover 1931-1942 years. There is probably one error date - Lohengrin was recorded at 1936 Bayreuth (not 1931 as pointed in this set) .
