"Howdy, howdy folks. We're glad to be back for another show here. As we do the numbers now, we're gonna call each fellow's name out so we can get right along with the show." And what a show. Bluegrass has always been a live-performance genre, on stage or in the studio, and Bill Monroe never sounded better on stage than during these heady years of the folk revival. He had something to share and to prove to his new audience, and he wouldn't meet them halfway, choosing instead his grittiest traditional material and singing, especially in the late '50s, with full, high yodel and wail. His voice mellowed into the '60s, but his band, including many of the best bluegrass pickers ever (Bill Keith, Peter Rowan, Richard Greene, and Bobby Hicks for starters), never gave quarter. To understand Bill Monroe and his various ensembles, one needs to hear his stage brilliance, and there's no better place to start than with these warm, clear live recordings. --Roy KastenAlbum Description
Previously unreleased recordings from the 1950s and '60s present Monroe concert performances, jam sessions, and festival workshops of Bill with the Bluegrass Boys and his brothers Charlie and Birch. This 75-minute collection captures Monroe with Peter Rowan, Bill Keith, Tex Logan, Bobby Hicks, Del McCoury, Hazel Dickens, Roland White, and many, many others. Includes rare photos and extensive notes by Ralph Rinzler. "...culled from both concerts and picking parties, [this recording] reveals what a holy terror [Monroe] was in front of an audience--even of friends, at 4:45 a.m." -- NewsweekCustomer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-03-10
What is found on this disc are two phases of Bill's career. The first is the mid to late 50's when rock n roll was gaining popularity and country artists were plugging in to keep pace. Bill, ever the purist to what he'd created and being his typical hard headed self, refused to put any band on the road that carried an electirc instrument. It was during this era that gigs were hard to come by for "hillbilly" music. That doesn't in any way take awy from these perfomances however. Bill and crew were at the top of thier respective game and the delivery is completely flawless. Ed Mayfield is the guitarist and lead singer on several of these cuts. The toure de force he turns in on Blue Yodel # 5 alone is jaw dropping. Also included is a guest spot with Don Reno playing banjo on Bluegrass Stomp, with Bill providing some of the spookiest, blusiest playing ever to be heard.
The second phase is equally impressive featuring the likes of Richard Greene, Pete Rowan, Bill Kieth (introduced as Brad because Monroe was to be the only Bill on stage) and Tex Logan. It was at this time that Ralph Rinzler had begun managing Monroe's career and a resulting rennisance was underway, which in no small way helped Bill attract younger, more progressive pickers. The most amazing cut from this period would have to be "Wayfaring Stranger" with a completely impromtu instrumental call-and-answer on Bill's break.
This disc, along with the Doc Watson duet (also on Smithsonian Folkway) and the Bear Family box sets of Monroe's Decca recordings are about all a bluegrass fan will ever need for a complete catalog of The Father of Bluegrass' genius.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17
Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.
For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.
To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.
(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)
6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04
Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.
While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.
Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.
Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...
His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!
The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!
A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

Wow!.......2006-11-21
Of course, the true test of a band's caliber is the live show; you can cheat on a record...being able to play a good show is something entirely different. And can these guys ever play a show! I got the chance to see them about a year and a half before they split up, and it was incredible. This recording really does a good job of capturing the intensity of their concerts, and so I highly recommend it to anyone who's seen them and wants to relive the experience.
And even if you never did get to see them live, this is a good introduction to the band's music, as it features songs from all but their last two albums and includes some of their best songs.
Seriously, pick this one up. You don't have to be a Christian (I'm not) or really even a ska fan to appreciate this stuff.

Incredible treasure!.......2007-05-07
live performances. Many selections have clear, beautiful recorded sound, and the playing is
truly unbelievable. There is a certain special electricity in these live performances that is
astounding, and any lover of violin playing, string playing,
instrumental playing, or music making should check out this treasure. A few of the tracks have a muted, muffled quality,
but there are enough well-recorded tracks to make the CD well worth the purchase price. Even the muffled tracks are worthwhile because
Heifetz's extraordinary sound and playing comes through even with some inferior fidelity in a few of the tracks.
content vs. sound quality.......2004-09-25
should be of interest to collectors and music students, not audiophiles. the more popular pieces are available on other recordings; the others seem pretty rare.

If your lone experience with The Supersuckers is as a guitar-posing, riff-wielding, cowboy hat-clad garage band, you'll find this ultra-rare transformation to nightclub country band as surprising as it is intoxicating. Recorded live in their hometown and retracing the sketches of their 1997 countrified album Must've Been High, the band--led by animated vocalist Eddie Spaghetti--scrounges through its decade-plus catalog, turning 100 mph originals like "Creepy Jackalope Eye" and "Born With a Tail" into whittled down, off-the-cuff slices of Nashville twang. Spaghetti's whiskey-soothed pipes strike a balance, slithering between the guitar-and-harmonica interplay of Dan "Thunder" Bolton and guest Dave Lipkind, who transform "Doublewide" into line-dancer's bliss and make "Sail On" ripe for a Glen Campbell comeback. After the rambunctious Tractor audience take backing vocal honors on "Killer Weed" (from Spaghetti's solo record Sauce), the `Suckers close out the night with a hard-core honky-tonk version of Buck Owens' "Alabama, Louisiana or Maybe Tennessee"--the closest to that lone experience that you're gonna get. - Scott Holter

The bequeath of a genius!.......2007-05-10
No other pianist like him, was owner - at the same time - of color sense, enviable technique and sheer lyricism when the work demanded it. His Liszt' s Don Juan Fantasy, Balkirev' s Islamey or even his Scriabin has no paragon.
His life was extremely brief. 55 years is just the beginning for many pianists, and the qworld of the music missed deeply his departure that fatidic April 4 1951 when he died playing the Grieg's Piano concerto under Ormandy' s direction.
His powerful expressiveness, mercurial tension were nevertheless, any impediment to round successfully heartfelt pages such his unsurpassed version of Chopin's Fantasy Op. 28, for instance. Withe the only exception of William Kapell, npo ther pianist has recorded with such notable intensity Chopin's First Ballad, and liszt's Sonata in B minor is one of the most outstanding ever recorded.
So, under any single pretext you should miss anyone of these legendary performances that are part of a history that still rediscovers itself, through the countless testimonials. Barere was undoubtedly, one of the most remarkable pianists the world ever knew.
A thunderous stampede from the sleeping giant.......2005-12-01
The overabundance of virtuosity in this account of Islamey is what will finally make you say, after several times of asking yourself, what cant this pianist do, why haven't i heard of him before,- and why Horowitz?
even harold schoenberg couldnt rag on this account,- for it is one of the most enjoyably virtuosic accounts of all time. Great place to start your adventures with Simon.
