Excellent performance and recording.......2007-02-02

If you like Rossini, this is an a must-have recording. Sure, he tended to write the same pieces over and over again, but they are utterly delightful. These performances by Neville Marriner and his personal orchestra are precise, and the fun inherent in many of these works does not get lost in the shuffle. The orchestra is blessed with excellent woodwind players; just listen to the oboe on some of the really fast passages.

Nice recorded sound. I really don't have anything bad to say about this entire package. It's almost a desert island recording for times where Mahler or Beethoven might be a little (or a lot) heavy.

Yes, these overtures may be cliched, but every classical collector should probably have them. Marriner, as usual, gives great performances, and the sound quality is very good.

Sparkling Performances.......2003-09-15

I only have glowing things to say about this set of Rossini overtures. First of all, Rossini's overtures are brilliant gems. They are light, fun and full of life!! Secondly, Marriner's conducting is marvellous. The performance sparkle like precious diamonds. Everything is very enjoyable, there's not a single boring number, unlike many other discs you purchase. And to top it off, it comes at a terrific bargain price. 3 very full CDs - 75 mins, 30 mins and 65 mins - of top notch music at seven dollars a piece is incredible.

"Simply a Stunner".......2006-07-21

Ideal for an opera lover, or for anyone who loves gorgeous singing. I am an opera nut and was introduced to this one by accident; "Au gond du temple saint" from Pearl Fishers (selection #6, disc one) was playing on the stereo in the Metropolitan Opera giftshop when I walked in at intermission one night. I thought it was so stunning I bought my first copy of the CD then and there; and have bought 2 other "back-up copies" since then, as well as having it on my iPod.

Good choice for opera lovers........2001-08-16

If you are in search of a cd containing various popular pieces from the greatest operas in the world, then search no more. This cd contains classic operatic pieces, sung by some of the most talented tenors and sopranos out there, including Placido Domingo. Madame Butterfly's Un Bel Di and Turandot's Nessun Dorma are, without a doubt, two of the most emotional and dramatic songs ever composed. Fortunately, this inexpensive two cd set includes those songs and many more. This cd is a delight to own, whether or not you've ever attended an opera.

Well played technically ,but..........2004-03-30

I have two major issues with this cd:

1) why was the William Tell overture omitted? Anyone who has heard it in its 12 minute entirety cannot help but be impressed. It's one of the best, if not the best, overture Rossini wrote. Listen to Gardelli or Chailly conduct this overture in their respective versions of the entire opera.

2) I enjoy Orpheus and admire their technique, but at times they can sound a bit too mechanical. In this issue, I found that they were unable to convey some of Rossini's playfulness,warmth and humor.

So with all due respect, I cannot share the enthusiasm of others regarding this disc.

One of the Greatest Living Orchestras in the World.......2000-11-09

Open your mind and strap on your classical thrill belt!

This orchestra is one of the greatest groups in the modern clasical circuit. One amazing factor in their success is that they have NO CONDUCTOR! Their perfomances are innovative, well articulated, and very energetic. The phrasing is outstanding. This group plays very precisely and uniformly. The balance is incredible! I cannot say enough about this orchestra--see for yourself. You will not be disappointed! Buy this CD- it's the best recording of Rossini I think I'll ever be graced to hear on modern instruments. Orpheus is God's fresh gift to the humdrum of stale ensembles. What a great price, too!

Outstanding CD.......2000-05-11

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays these pieces better than they have ever been played. The performance is astoundingly clean. The recording is exemplary. The price is almost criminally low. Why Deutsche Grammophon took this out of print in the first place is a mystery. The fact that they've reissued it at midprice is a GIFT to the civilized world. The same could be said of their reissue of Emerson doing the Dvorak 12th quartet, Tchaikovsky 1st, and Borodin 2d quartets. The BEST part of this CD is that the performances are using ORIGINAL orchestrations--orchestrations that have inexplicably fallen out of practice in concert performances of the overtures--that let Rossini's humor in the pieces shine through (e.g. piccolo rather than flute in Italiana in Algeri). Even if you have a recording of Rossini overtures, this one uses the original orchestrations, includes some rarer overtures, and has the clarinet bonus track, and I guarantee the performances are better than any ever recorded. In sum, buy this CD now and be glad for the rest of your life that you did.

You would like this CD before you have even bought it. The clarinet player is just great. It is a great orchestration and the sound quality is great. I have nothing bad to say about the CD. Don't take my word for it just buy it. Are you trippin'! Buy this CD jigga'!

A Tuneful Comedy.......2000-08-26

An interesting plot and glorious music combined to make this opera a success in its day and a very stageable work today. There are only five soloists and no chorus. The orchestra in our recording play on original instruments, bringing out subtleties that a modern large orchestra just cannot bring across. It is unfortunate, however, that a harpsichord was used to accompany the secco recitative. A forte-piano should have been utilized. As for the soloists, Annick Massis sings very lyrically and handles the tessitura very well. She can sing coloratura flawlessly. The same cannot be said for tenor Raul Gimenez. Despite a good sense of line and beauty of tone, his coloratura turns nasal and is somewhat muddy. The other three male singers are excellent in their roles except for some interpolated high notes which are not stylistically accurate and also do not sound good. There are notes and a libretto in English with this Erato set. If you buy this recording, despite a couple of musical drawbacks, you will enjoy a first class Rossini comedy.

I cannot believe this recording has not been reviewed yet. I have had it for years. It features some of the greatest conductors of all time in sparkling renditions of Rossini's greatest overtures. This is a super great bargain.

Mario Bayo has won a strong following through her singing of Baroque rarities. Here, she turns to Rossini arias, on which her small, bright soprano generates lots of agility and allure but insufficient color and depth. There's the welcome inclusion of relative rarities, such as the aria from Rossini's first success, the one-act L'inganno felice, and an aria the composer added for a revival of Barber of Seville. Of course, that opera's popular "Una voce poco fa" is here, too, done with brio if not with the coloratura fireworks others bring to it. A special treat is the contribution of Rinaldo Alessandrini's Concerto Italiano. In addition to characterful accompaniments, they play two overtures with wonderful zest, see-through transparency, and tonal polish. Beefed up to 33 players, this crack period-instrument band imbues every phrase with life, and the sound of their wind section is ravishing. To hear the way the ensemble rips into the Overture to La scala di sieta is alone worth the price of purchase. --Dan Davis

Now this is what I am talking about! A wonderful voice, a great period instrument orchestra, an HIP approach and a beautifully recorded CD. What more could anyone want?

This marvellous and sexy recording of Rossini arias is just my cup of tea. Maria Bayo is just wonderful. Her period instrument orchestra is just wonderful and Rinaldo Alessandrini deserves a gold medal for this recording. The sounds are great and the music is just wonderful.

There are no other recordings like this one. This one is unique and there are no other recording of this repertoire on period instruments. So this is the only one available. But it is a wonder, nontheless.

Please consider buying this recording if you're a music lover - especially if you love Early Music and if you love 19th century opera - both come together on this recording.

No es el mejor trabajo de Bayo.......2003-09-18

Definitivamente, la gran soprano española Maria Bayo ha dado un paso atras en su limpia carrera discografica, con este trabajo donde presenta una seleccion de arias de Rossini con suma correccion (lejos del excelso nivel de sus otros trabajos), y con algun que otro preocupante fallo técnico (tendencia a calar, graves poco consistentes...) En resumen, yo esperaba mucho mas de este disco por parte de Bayo.
Tampoco parece que sea Concerto Italiano la orquesta adecuada para este repertorio, los instrumentos de epoca desafinan aqui mas de lo debido, lo que desluce la grabacion.
La direccion de Rinaldo Alesandrini es lo mejor de un disco que solo es apto para fans de Bayo, o para aquellos que aun no conozcan el aria de Rosina tras la tormenta en 'El barbero de Sevilla', que Bayo recupera para el disco aquí, bastante bien interpretada.

Maria Bayo has one of the clearest, most flexible voices I have ever heard. She follows in the footsteps of her teachers, the late Teresa Berganza and Pilar Lorengar, with her Spaniard approach to Bel Canto and coloratura phrasing. This compilation has some rarities, excellent overtures, and the last aria (Track 8) really stands out as the jewel from the album. This is worth the price, being an import, and be sure to get her Mozart Arias and Handel Arias as well. She's one of the most up and coming singers in Zarzuela (Spanish bel canto) and lyric opera of Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti. I would not be surprised to hear her as the new greatest Lucia di Lammermoor after Anna Moffo or Natalie Dessay's recent attempt (which isn't bad, I might add, albeit different).

Marriner's an accomplished Rossinian whose traversal of these operatic overtures has been admired since their first appearances on mid-1970s LPs. A selection of eight, including such favorites as The Barber of Seville, Il Signor Bruschino, and others, is here released on a hybrid SACD-blue book CD disc in their original quadraphonic state. The sound sparkles in whatever medium used and the performances retain their brio too, in these lightfooted, invigorating performances. Marriner's orchestra puts the bubbles in these glasses of aural champagne with playing of razor-sharp precision, faultless intonation, and beautifully polished solo turns, especially in the all-important winds. The extensive buttery horn solo in the Overture to Il Turco in Italia is just one of many such impressive examples. Marriner also brings out the sheer ingenuity Rossini lavished on these works, so full of satisfying surprises, thrilling crescendos, and inventive orchestration despite their often formulaic structure. Vivid sonics in whichever medium you choose--SACD, quad or stereo, or standard CD--seal a strong recommendation. --Dan Davis

Delicious recording.......2007-07-28

It is hard to believe that this is a 34-year-old recording. Originally a Phillips SQ release from the short-lived days of quadraphonic, it gets new life in this Pentatone hybrid SACD re-release. The sound on this 4.1 SACD is very good, but the performance is excellent. Tight playing by a fine orchestra that seems to love the music. I hope there will be another SACD coming with other overtures.
