Poulenc's 1957 opera has proved perhaps the most enduring lyric stage work of the past half-century, though recordings of it are hardly plentiful. So it's a pleasure to welcome one that captures the work's many concerns--faith and courage, among others, conveyed through beleaguered Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. The opera focuses on Blanche, whose private fears are overcome by martyrdom. The chilling closing scene has the nuns singing the Salve Regina, their numbers reduced with each terrifying thwack of the guillotine. In this 1980 French radio concert broadcast, Jean-Pierre Marty conducts a flowing, dramatic performance of Poulenc's beautiful score, highlighted by Felicity Lott's vulnerable, yet stubborn, Blanche and Regine Crespin's chilling Old Prioress. The rest of the cast shines, despite some acidic soprano high notes, perhaps an artifact of the recording, which is otherwise fresh-sounding, with wide dynamics and good stereo comparable to studio recordings of the time. Pierre Dervaux's premier recording on EMI boasts an incomparable Blanche in Denise Duval, but it's in somewhat boxy mono sound; Kent Nagano on Virgin may be the best bet, but you won't go wrong with this one either. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Shattering.......2006-05-26

Poulenc's Dialogues of Carmelites is nowhere near the tuneful, melodically-rich operas you've ever come across. It is largely set in recitative, and the orchestra sets the grim atmosphere of the whole work. As a whole, Dialogues is a really outstanding opera, full of atmosphere and grabs you with its mysterious charm. This recording, largely supervised by Poulenc himself during the recording sessions, definitely offers the perfect idiom of the work. Most of the voices cast in this recording are also the creators of their respective roles: Duval as Blanche, Gorr as Mere Marie, Crespin as Madame Lidoine...What you have here is not only an outstanding musical recording, but also a rare historical footage of immense power. All the voices on the recording are perfectly cast. The little known Duval gives here a wonderful portrayal of a fearful yet sensitive Blanche. Rita Gorr and Regine Crespin, caught here at an early stage of their careers, are in their usual prime, bringing not only their wonderful tones but also great insight into the characters. Dervaux's conducting is inspired and solid throughout. The supporting cast, all French and all good voices, all give memorable moments.
Dialogues des Carmelites has perhaps the most shattering final scene in operatic history: A chorus of nuns that gets diminished one by one at the sound of a guillotine. It literally numbs you and leaves you emotionally drained by the final pianissimo chord. Duval said that the challenge of singing Blanche in this Salva Regina scene is overwhelmingly difficult, since the singer has to overcome the emotions and sing a totally pure line over the grim atmosphere of the scene. It is perhaps also overwhelming for the listener. It is so real, so powerful that admittedly I don't dare to listen to it until I'm totally ready.
Dialogues des Carmelites, other than the wonderful music, also deals with social and psychological problems, among which are faith, life and death, community life and evolution. This recording has it all. A great recording of the century.

This recording was the first studio recording of the work and the cast includes some of the singers who performed in the work's premiere. Poulenc himself was also an advisor when the work was recorded, so perhaps this may be one of the few operatic recordings that we have that is true to the composer's intentions since the composer was involved in the recording. The cast includes one of opera's greatest voices, Regine Crespin as well as one of the best known mezzos of the French repertoire Rita Gorr. While the recording has been remastered, listeners will immediately notice it was first recorded in mono so it has an aged sound to it. Yet this should not be a deterrant because it has dramatic intensity. Even the total destruction of DIE GOTTERDAMMERUNG doesn't cause me to pause the way DIALOGUES can.

If your purchasing this recording, you may also want to consider reading M. Owen Lee's commentary on this work in his volume A SEASON OF OPERA FROM ORPHEUS TO ARIADNE. In this entry Fr. Lee combines all that makes this a wonderful opera.

5 out of 5 stars Sensuality Personified!.......2005-04-27

This is one of the best collections of Regine Crespin. Of course, her Berlioz/Ravel set with Ansermet is definitive, but the beauty and soft womanliness of her voice can be heard in all the selections on this disc. The engineers went for her vocal best and they created a fine collection aptly titled "The Best of..." One would be unduly captious to find Crespin "brittle" of tone here.

It is by now, very difficult to imagine anyone singing "Il est doux" with more apt expression of the line than La Crespin. Wagner's Wesendonk lieder is simply sublime from start to finish and the Faure takes on new meaning. That she is comical, melancholy, fun and happy by turns singles her out. This collection captures all her awesome talent. Underneath it all seems to be a very, if I may, sexual energy.

Crespin must be heard to be believed and the miracle lies in that even her softest tones are really enveloping, never thin. All tones are open and this is why there are enough colors in Regine Crespin's delicious voice to paint the world a thousand times, but it may also be why she infamous for being short and edgy on top but I remind, never here is she such. She is a relaxed singer in superb voice, comfortable in her own olive skin and makes the most out of every word those poets wrote.

The whole collection is unique in pace, style, and voice. It is Regine Crespin...in a nutshell fabulous!

I became interested in Poulenc's DIALOGUES des CARMELITES long before I heard a note of the opera. I was twelve or thirteen at the time and was looking something up in an encyclopedia and I came across the entry for opera. Glossy photographs accompanied the entry and a stark black and white photograph of singers dressed as nuns lying prostrate on the floor piqued my curiosity. While the recording has been remastered, listeners will immediately notice it was first recorded in mono so it has an aged sound to it. Yet this should not be a deterrant because it has dramatic intensity. Very often I listen to opera while doing something else, and I will have to admit I can be working away as some of opera's most gory death scenes occur and barely notice. Yet whenever I listen DIALOGUES and hear the nuns sing "Salve Regina" and hear the chorus diminished one by one as the nuns are executed, and hear the guillotine (a percussion representation of the guillotine, of course) I always stop and pause.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-02-20

This is an excellent recording of this moving opera. Recorded in France in the late 50s, it features an entirely French cast. The sound quality is very good. The singing is excellent with nicely balanced orchestral work. The product partially of Poulenc's re-engagement with Christianity, Dialogues is the story of the martyrdom of a group of nuns during the French revolution. Characterized by deceptively simple, at times seemingly understated, music, Dialogues features lovely vocal writing married to a strong message about the value of faith. The final scene is a remarkable fusion of unaffected drama and music.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless singing and the most moving music you'll ever hear!.......2004-07-11

I consider Dialogues des Carmélites the most likeable opera of the last fifty years. It was first performed at the La Scala in 1957 and since then all the main Opera Houses in the world have performed it and some of the greatest singers have sung it. It's not difficult to understand why. It has one of the most beautiful plots ever written for opera and the most touching music you'll ever hear. It's almost impossible not to be moved when you listen to it, particularly in Madama Lidoine's final aria "Mes filles, voilà que s'achève" and the final chorus "Salve Regina".
It was a so successful opera that was recorded by EMI just one year after its world premiere. The cast is unsurpassable, and in this recording we do feel the drama, particularly the fear of death, which are the main purpose of the opera.
Denise Duval has a truly French voice, and it's youthful, with kind of a tearful or afraid tone that helps us to understand Blanche's character. Then we have Régine Crespin's unbeliavable Madame Lidoine! She simply reaches perfection, and I would dare to say it's the most creamy, beautiful voice I've ever heard. Her technique allows her to sing everything as if it was simply talking to someone. Her imposing voice fits very well into Madame Lidoine's character. We also have wonderful contributions of Rita Gorr as Mère Marie and Liliane Berton as Soeur Constance, alongside with the shocking, intense interpretation of Denise Scharley as the dying Madame de Croissy.

This is a French opera sung practically only by French singers and conducted by a great French conductor. The chorus is also French. Thus, we have not only flawless singing, but perfect style and diction.
If either you want to know this wonderful opera or looks for a good recording, I recommend it as the most perfect version ever made!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17

In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."

In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.

If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.

1 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2004-11-19

If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

--Dan Davis

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars If the EMI-Dervaux set is hard to get..........2001-09-09

People buying the Carmelites for the first time will usually and rightly go for the EMI set with Dervaux conducting and the irreplaceable Denise Duval as Blanche. But if, as Amazon.com suggests, the EMI set is now unavailable, this 1980 French radio recording is a very fine alternative - and an absolute must for lovers of Regine Crespin's distinctive timbre. Crespin, as the prioress, and the young Felicity Lott as Blanche, are outstanding. Diction is of course key in French opera: with Crespin, superb diction goes without saying, and Lott shows that her astonishing (to the French) mastery of French text is not a recent phenomenon. If you understand French, you won't need the libretto (fortunately, as with this set you don't get it). They are surrounded by a solid French cast in a live performance (Theatre des Champs Elysees as part of French radio's lyric season) with the extra buzz of excitement that comes from playing to an audience and which the Carmelites, a potentialy static score, need. Sound is, however, excellent, and the Paris public is, in spite of some coughing, for once in fairly good health - maybe that April there wasn't too much consumption around - and on good behaviour. One quibble from a French friend: "the guillotine's better on the EMI set." Well, only a Frenchman could know. ...

4 out of 5 stars TUNEFUL TIMETABLE BUT YOU CAN'T DANCE TO IT.......2003-01-01

Holy homily! For those who like music from a bygone era -- a real long, long, long, long time ago -- here's your relic. This CD celebrates the Top 40 of the Sixth Century: Gregorian chants performed by various artists, including the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, one of the world's most renowned religious choirs. This is tuneful timetable, with stops along the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism eras. Don't get us wrong, but we don't think it has a pray of a chance of making our playlist.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voices!.......2003-12-10

This album is wonderful! It gathers Ave Marias from several composers of the 20th century . The lyrics are in French but you don't need to understand them to enjoy the beautiful voices of Calliope women choir. This is just amazingly performed. The voices are pure and inspiring but also intense and moving: they have every nuance required by these pieces!
