Wonderful, but just SOME of the very best of Nicolai Gedda.......2005-07-03

This is but a subset of the glorious recorded singing by Nicolai Gedda; however, it is a good sampler of the repertoire that made him legendary. And, at least a couple of the tracks ("Asile Hereditaire" and Lenski's aria) seem to be his best recordings of those particular works. Gedda is a member of a small circle of famed tenors noted for disciplined and artistic vocal production. He could find and consistently produce the "ping" we all love to hear. And, that was necessarily accompanied by flawless breath control. He holds the last note of the rousing "Hereditaire" for approximately eleven seconds! Onward! Ho! The emotion and delicate treatment he showed in Lenski's aria is a high-water mark. I can not imagine it being done better.

I first heard him in a recording of La Boheme (with Freni) in 1975 and have heard him in person both in Faust (1976) and in recital (1981). Whether on stage or in recording, Gedda is remarkable and consistent. If you are new to opera or are younger and addicted to the stars of today (and some of them are very good too), you should hear Gedda. It will raise your definition for what it takes to be a great tenor. Go find a recording of Fritz Wunderlich too.

Nicolai Gedda . . . the 4th tenor.......2004-06-13

Those of you who know the three tenors should look into this incredibly versatile singer. The first time I heard this remarkable tenor sing was from a recording of Mozart's Magic Flute. From then on I became an avid fan. This recording highlights how Gedda could go from singing lyric repertoire, to the bigger and more difficult French and Bel Canto and even tackling Russian and operetta. Any aspiring tenor and dedicated opera fan would do well to own this CD set.

Magnificant Singing in Every Way.......2007-01-12

These are all terrific performances, and it would be difficult to single out any one in particular, but if I had to, I would say "Una furtiva lagrima". I've heard a few different performances of this aria by Joseph Schmidt (he liked to record his favorite arias more than once), and this one, for me, is by far the best. His vocal production was perfect through even the most demanding phrases, his interpretation was beautiful, with one inspired moment after another, and even his added embellisments on one of the last runs near the close of the aria, had everything in the way of coloratura that any bel-canto lover could ever wish for. It's probably the single best version of this aria I've ever heard ANY singer do. I don't wish to slight the rest of the program, as it all is pretty spectacular, too. 'One of those unique examples of a legendary singer where the actual singing is, if possible, even more beautiful than the voice itself.

This is an amazing collection of arias from the early 1900s through the 1930s (there is one 1942 cut). The sound transfers, made from pristine 78 records, are excellent, especially considering the age of the recordings. This CD is a splendid overview of the outstanding artists of their day, and while many of them are no longer (opera) household names, their singing is first rate. Not only would this be a great CD for an opera history buff, it is also excellent for someone just learning about opera and wanting to hear opera legends. The price for 5 CDs, each over an hour's worth of listening, is a steal.

Must-have.......2003-07-24

I just got this in the mail today and have only listened to a few tracks, but the "Les pecheurs de perles" alone makes this a must-have. Sooooo gorgeous. Gedda's voice is divine- probably the best tenor I have ever heard, tone-wise at least.
