Lots of young indie bands call the music industry on its superficiality but few do it with such obvious distaste as the Riverboat Gamblers. On the feral, catchy track "The Biz Loves Slut," the Austin, Texas punk band looks at the world through the eyes of a record company suit and, well, it's brutal: "We think your songs might need a better hook/ I promise on the good book, it won't hurt/ I won't get it in your mouth." To The Confusion of Our Enemies, the group's second release, proves that no spreadsheets are required to make an album that matches passion and attitude with crafty riffs and knockout choruses. Meanwhile, freewheeling rock tracks such as "The Gamblers Try Their Hand at International Diplomacy" and "Don't Bury Me... I'm Still Not Dead"--which probably owe more to classic guitar rock heroics than the band would care to admit--reveal why Riverboat Gamblers was named by no less authority than Rolling Stone as one of the "Top 5 bands to break out at this year's SXSW." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Since 2001, Texas's Riverboat Gamblers have cultivated a fanatical following with their rowdy energetic live shows that have led to supporting slots on tours with Flogging Molly, Hot Water Music, Burning Brides, and the MC5, as well as a 2005 stint on the Van's Warped Tour. "Don't Bury Me" will be included in the Van's 2006 Warped Tour compilation on Side One Dummy, and "Walk Around Me" is included on the "Take Action Vol. 5" compilation (Sub City/Hopeless), in stores February.

4 out of 5 stars Very good stuff.......2007-04-26

I'm kinda corn-fused why some people are rating this so low? Sure, it sounds different then their previous releases. Sure it's a bit more "polished" then previous releases. But that's not to say that this isn't a darn fine slab of rock. Great writing, big hooks, lightning quick guitars. What's not to love? I'd give it 4 1/2 stars, but one doesn't exist, so 4 it is.

5 out of 5 stars GFFG!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-14

The Gamblers rule, if this is an unknown fact to you, then you are either deaf, never heard them, or just dumb. If the first or last are the case, then you are screwed, if it's the second, then buy this record, and treat your ears the punk rock ear candy that is the Gamblers. An intense live act, that causes physical injury to all those on stage. Playing songs that will recall equal parts Rocket From The Crypt, AC DC, Radio Birdman, The Rip Offs, and other classic yesteryear punk rock, but make no mistake, this rock is all 100% Gamblers!

2 out of 5 stars lost the edge.......2006-11-10

i have seen this band live about 5 times back during the "Something to Crow About" days. i must say they rocked the house like no other each time. In my opinion Something to Crow About is a five star album. on stage Mike Weibe used to make fun of Good Charlotte. On To the confusion of our enemies the riverboat gamblers sound more like good charlotte than themselves. wasted my money. maybe it's the new lineup changes. all three previous albums are better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars High-energy punk rock.......2006-11-10

I first heard of the Riverboat Gamblers from the Warped Tour 2006 compilation CD. As soon as I heard "Don't Bury Me...I'm Still Not Dead" I knew that I had to own the CD.

"To The Confusion Of Our Enemies" is full of punk rck with attitude, but on the other hand doesn't take itself too seriously. "Don't Bury Me" is a high-speed ballad, "Biz Loves Sluts" is a thinly-veiled poke at Hollywood, and tracks such as "The Gamblers Try Their Hand At International Diplomacy" and "Unicorn Shave Your Horn" are just the band messing around and having a good time.

With a sound somewhere that punk and alternative rock lovers alike can appreciate, the "To The Confusion Of Our Enemeies" is a solid addition to any rocker's collection.

3 out of 5 stars decent punk album.......2006-09-08

This is decidedly not as good as "Something to Crow About". Not as many hooks or "singalongs" as STCA had, which is disappointing. The songs aren't as memorable, which is unfortunate.
But that doesn't mean it's not worth the money. There are a few really great gems such as "Don't Bury Me... I'm Still Not Dead", "The Song We Used to Call 'Wasting Time'", and "Year of the Rooster", which has a bit of a throw back to 70's style punk.
All in all, it's good, but not great. Again, it's worth the money but don't expect it to be better or as good as STCA.

You sure these guys aren't from the coal states, like PA, cuz they sure are mining the rock. Jump up and get down, real rock still exists somewhere, and it's on the River.

All aboard! The Riverboat Gamblers are about to begin the trip downriver. This full length album "Something to Crow About," will rattle your bones as Reverend Mike rocks the band's gospel through spit and electricity. Such songs like "Hey, Hey, Hey," and "Oh Yeah," will leave you fully cleansed of your sins and you spin this album over and over again in your headphones.
This album should be checked out for any curiousity "buzzing" around the gamma and is a must for any cock fighters on the scene. For more information about the band check out there lot on Myspace as well as going to theriverboatgamblers.com.

5 out of 5 stars Hey! Hey! Hey!.......2005-12-05

the riverboat gamblers are awesome. they bring some much energy into their punk rock n roll type sound. every song is short, in your face and awesome. with lyrics like "your suicide note is plagerism" you know these guys are having fun which is what music should be about

5 out of 5 stars Grab yer bucket of chicken and throw on this record!.......2005-06-09

One of my favorite releases and favorite live bands of 2003, the 'Gamblers came to Sacramento and made me an automatic fan. I had no expectations and left in awe! For anyone who's seen the band live, you know how crazy their live shows are. The lead singer Mike is jumping around the room, balancing on the back of chairs, barely keeping his balance on shakey amps, spinning the mic around on the end of the cord, which nearly hits several members of the audience including myself. (At the end of 2003, he ends up hitting bassist Pat in San Francisco in the mouth, leadng to a later benefit show in Sacramento to pay the massive medical bills.) Talking to Mike off-stage is like talking to a totally different persona than the one on-stage. Mild manored, soft spoken and very considerate. When talking to him after Pat's accident, (they ended up playing Sacramento the next night with out Pat and cancelling the remander of their tour), he expressed how bad he felt, and showed sincere regret.
Someone calculated how much the 'Gambers have gotten hurt on tour, and they have an amazing record. Something like 30-50%.
[To see an after picture of Mike's maddness, take a look at the Riverboat Gamblers/Electric Eel Shock Split Picture Disc 7inch.]

I've seen them three times and managed to walk away un-harmed, and my favorite songs ringing in my head. You can't go wrong with "What's What", "Ice Water", "OOh Yeah" or "Dead From the Neck Up."

5 out of 5 stars THE RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS HIT THE JACKPOT!!.......2005-01-11

Unlike most punk records, this one didn't take a few listens to grow on me- it sucked me in immediately and didn't exhale until the last little outro ditty. Without question, the Gamblers have put together one of the best punk rock records to come along in recent years... it's straight-ahead, balls-out rock from beginning to end- with tons of hooks, occasionally conjuring up the spirits of old school punkers like the Ramones and Misfits. I usually don't waste my time writing reviews, but this one is worth it. Do yourself a favor: buy the record and prepare to be blown away!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent blues/country/punk/whatever........2000-02-14

At first listen, I hated nearly all the songs on this CD. They're produced much tighter than anything the Oblivians ever did. But, on just the second run, I caught the genius in the songs and fell in love. Surprisingly enough, I found myself comparing this CD to some Misfits stuff. The occasional supernatural imagery and the dead-on Danzig vocals on "One Eyed Girl" sealed that. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Post-Oblivians Drunken Mayhem.......1999-07-28

During the 6 years between "Gamblin' Days Are Over" and "Bluff City", Greg Cartwright and Jack Yarber, AKA Greg and Jack Oblivian, were 2/3 of The Oblivians, perhaps the best practitioners anywhere of deranged, out-of-kilter Memphis R&B-tinged Rock & Roll. They have improved dramatically as musicians and singers over this time, although, I'm delighted to say, appear to be as demented as ever as far as their song subject matter ("One-Eyed Girl", "Pepper Spray Boogie", etc.). They still kick major ass as a band, and I've read reviews comparing Greg's vocals to Mick Jagger, and these songs as outtakes from "Exile On Main Street" (something nobody would have dared say 6 years ago). An excellent LP/CD by two major talents. Two questions - (1) Why all the rockers on one side, and the ballads on the other? (2) It's bloody obvious that it's Alex Chilton playing and singing on "I Don't Want to Laugh at You". Why isn't he credited? Is it mandatory that he participate in all recordings made in memphis? Don't get me wrong, I love Alex, but his solo stuff since he's sobered up has gone downhill.

4 out of 5 stars You will boogie like a decapitated chicken........2004-02-26

This album was one that caught my ear while hearing it on a great college radio station in Tallahassee, Florida. I bought the album and was not disappointed, and indeed, played the sucker a bunch. Crystal Gazing Luck Amazing is worth getting if you dig the driving sound of mid 60s garage bands. On this album, The Compulsive Gamblers manage to sound fresh and energetic without being entirely retro.
The opener "Way I Feel About You" packs a mean punch. "Pepper Spray Boogie" is an adreniline pumped tune that would make a great soundtrack for (1) someone getting nailed in the peepers with pepper spray or (2) a chicken getting its head lopped off. It has all the spastic drunken nuttiness of someone running down the street on fire or sprinting in circles in a straitjacket, bubba.
"Stop and Think It Over," which I think might be a cover, is surprisingly more sensitive and pensive in contrast to most of the fast paced rockers. The band is tight, and there is solid playing all around--especially some groovy organ and piano.
Again, if you dig the Nuggets or Pebbles or Back from the Grave compilations, you probably can't go wrong with this band. I intend to check out their other songs.

    Album Description

On the heels of last year's Something To Crow About, The Riverboat Gamblers strike again with the rage inspired Backsides. Produced by The Gamblers and Jeff Burke (Marked Men), Backsides is the third national release by the Gamblers and their second for Vile Beat.

Possibly the best live punk band ever, this five-piece emergency room disaster has been described as a "thermonuclear rock & roll blowtorch" (OC Weekly) and has the battle scars to prove it. Formed in Denton, TX (boyhood home of Roy Orbison) in 1997, The Riverboat Gamblers played house parties for years, quickly becoming local favorites. It wasn't long before they established themselves as one of the most explosive and ferocious live acts in the state of Texas. Says singer Mike Wiebe, "We wanted to be the antithesis of `indie rock' - just push the limits put on the best show possible." Their reputation is well deserved. The Austin Statesman recently picked the Gamblers as one of the shows not to miss at this year's SXSW. As a result, a two-block line formed and remained during their entire performance. The buzz has been huge and now the world has caught up - along with every major label and one big indie that have tried to sign the band. The Gamblers are kicking ass and taking names. The time is now!

5 out of 5 stars The Riverboat Gamblers.......2003-08-20

My cousin introduced me to this, and a band member many moons ago, and WOW is all I can say...These guys really know how to ... Rock!! It's pure-unadulterated-punk-but-not-really-love-it-till-your-heart-bleeds-music...I can't say enough good things about this band or their music. They make me want to go on tour and I can't even play an instrument, or sing -- They're very free with their music and their words and it works. It's just a good time and it makes you smile...and drive fast.

4 out of 5 stars Who Says Christain Rock has to be boring!!!.......2003-02-22

I know the bad reputation that Christain Music gets in the secular media but this band does everything to disprove that notion. Whether it is warning young men against the evils of porn starlets in Jenna (Was a no Show) or how alcohol can ruin a persons life (most songs) The Gamblers do the sort of evanglizing that most young people need to here. Their statements are profound and vocalist Rev. Teko Buller shouts out against all sorts of evils and tribulations that he has hopefully just witnessed and has not personally experienced.

Musically they sound like any number of Rock-N-Roll and Punk bands that dotted the landscape. Their chief influences sound to these ears to include The Turbonegros, The Dictators, The Skeleton Kids, The Rocket From the Crypts, The Patential Johns, The Johnny Thunders, The MC5's and The Ramones. In fact, the band even covers the Ramones smash hit Slug, which warns about the dangers of walking in the woods at night.

One complaint I have about such a godly group of young gentleman is the foul language that is sometimes invoked and the fact that some of the songs seem to be advocating sinful behaviour instead of preaching against it.

Despite this alarming truth , I feel that as long as new bands like this keep appearing, Christain Rock is here to stay.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-11-05

In a perfect world, everyone would have this album on their shelf. In a perfect world, radio stations couldn't get enough play out of songs like Jenna, High Rolling and Don't Look At Me. This is honestly one of the best punk albums of the year. With influences like The Ramones, The Misfits and Turbonegro, The Riverboat Gamblers not only retain their own sound, but improve on what's come before. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

      5 out of 5 stars rock!.......2002-03-28

Saw these guys a couple times at SxSW this year. Oh yeah! This cd rocks but it's only a small fraction of the energy released at their live show. Pick this cd up and grab a couple for your friends too so they know how much you care.

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!.......2007-07-14

If you already have the 45 minutes version keep it! This is a fiasco. Here you will have 45 minutes by Shostakovich, the remaining one hour 45 minutes were "completed" by a Polish composer called Kryztof Meyer in the same "style", if you want. Pay attention! You are not buying Shostakovich here...Keep your actual version unless you have nothing else at all!
