Good starting place - Not the best though.......2007-07-31

This is a great bargain deal if you want to hear the music from this opera. Is this a great performance? No, it is not. The strongest part of this recording is the conducting, great pacing all the way through. The worst part is Milnes AWFUL falsetto note in Largo al factorum. How the hell did this make it on the final product? Horrible, sounds like a teenage boy. Other than that, it is decent.

A charming, humane, thoroughly enjoyable Barbiere.......2007-07-11

In much the same manner that Lucia Popp forever standardized Mozart's Königin der Nacht, Beverly Sills redefines the role of Rossini's capricious Rosina. Her crystalline coloratura voice washes over "Una voce poca fa" with brisk, windswept ease. It is a mystery why any listener would prefer a mezzo-soprano, such as Teresa Berganza, despite the fact that the role was fashioned for a denser voice. (Agnes Baltsa is likely the most delightful deep Rosina on record.) Nicolai Gedda's mellifluous voice provides the ideal characterization for Rossini's vigorous youth, the Conte d'Almaviva. "Ecco, ridente in cielo" and "Se il mio nome saper voi bramate," the role's osciallating cavatina and sensual serenade, shine with two characteristics which often clash during tenor performances: stylistic perfection and taste. Sherrill Milnes is, without a doubt, the finest Figaro recorded since Robert Merrill. The Verdian baritone exhibits atypically droll flare during "Largo al factotum," especially during the aria's feverish repetition of "Figaro." He and Gedda harmonize flawlessly during the duet "All'idea di quell metallo"; his voice also complements the radiant Sills during "Dunque io son ... tu non m'inganni?"

Fernando Corena possessed the most pristine and genuinely humorous interpretation of the cranky Dottore Bartolo. Renato Capecchi, a buffo bass whose range is quite impressive though occasionally unstable, provides a performance which can almost parallel Corena's. Where Corena was blusterous, Capecchi is sniveling; where the former was wickedly serpentine, Capecchi is morose and self-pitying. His greatest achievement is that he is never maudlin; his performance is constantly fluid (he is gut-wrenchingly hilarious during the Act II duet "Pace e gioia sia con voi" with Gedda disguised as a garrulous music teacher) and his characterization, though it transcends all realms of reality, is delightful in its over-the-top perfection. Ruggero Raimondi's Don Basilio is quite the opposite; his rendition of the "Slander Song" ("La calunnia è un venticello") is almost doomful. He provides archaic and gloomy weight where the inimitable Nicolai Ghiaurov was effervescent. The illustrious mezzo-soprano Fedora Barbieri supplies a very satisfying performance as Berta, Bartolo's disgruntled old maid, especially during her aria "Il vecchiotto cerca moglie."

With James Levine leading the London Symphony Orchestra with exquisite charm, one can barely begin to praise this brilliant 1975 recording of Rossini's landmark opera. It is not only an essential Il Barbiere di Siviglia for aficionados of the comedy, but a touching and compelling accomplishment no music lover should exist without.

Recorded too late.......2007-07-06

I wish that I could speak more highly of this performance, as it was made by some of my favorite singers (and conductor). Alas, I can not. Milnes is a fine Figaro. Sills (I love her) should have recorded this role about 10 years earlier. Really unfortunately, I found Gedda's work painful. A fine, stylish tenor in his prime, he is well past it here.

Sometimes great talents come together and misfire. But, if you are a Sills fan...

A real joy.......2007-01-24

It is a great pleasure which what I hear this wonderful recording of Rossini's masterpeace, vividly conducted by a young James Levine and sung by a cast of first-class singers including Milnes, Sills, Raimondi and the unsurpassable Gedda as Count Almaviva. This production has not lost anything of it's freshness since over 30 years!

Superlatives don't do justice to this priceless and incomparable collection of duets by opera's two most charismatic singers, whose interpretations are brimming with nuance only the truly gifted could capture. However pleasing Cecilia Bartoli's renditions of Cherubino and others in Mozart Arias, the depth of Susanna's emotional life that Bartoli conveys has yet to be even imagined by other sopranos, as she rips through opera's boundaries, creating her very own Fach and threatening the jobs of soubrettes the world over. Once she and Bryn Terfel draw you into their world of stellar, multidimensional creations, there's no escape from pleasure; in their talented hands, recitative becomes as interesting as any aria. I expected more from this recording. Both singers are wonderful and sound great in other recordings. I think the quality of this recording is poor.

As splendid as Cecilia Bartoli and Bryn Terfel are individually, their glory is just that much expounded when singing together. At many points it seems almost as if they are competing in their melodic virtuosity, but you can tell they are just having the most magnificent time while competing thus. They sing a pleasant variety of duets, and are decidedly fine singing practically any style.

I probably enjoy this album more than either singer's individual albums, although they are wonderful themselves. For while solos are glorious, duets are ethereal.

I Adore Cecilia and Bryn!!! They are just so amazing! Thank the lucky stars above that we have such wonderful talent in the younger operatic world! Don't get me wrong, I love the more established singers, but these two are incredibly charming and it is a treat to be able to hear them sing together!

The kind of collaboration, friendship and joyous love for the music evident on this CD is exactly what opera should be. It brings a ray of sunshine to us listeners, particularly to those of us who haven't yet gotten a chance to see Cecilia and Bryn live. (Thankfully, there is a video account of their splendid "Le Nozze di Figaro", selections from which are featured here.)

The CD is clearly subdivided into Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti sections, with Mozart given a priority in terms of number of selections. Both artists are blessed with a gift for opera buffa, their personifications are very funny and very accurate without exaggerations. They may go full-out on stage (e.g. the way Suzanna hits Terfel's 6'6" Figaro is hilarious) but it does not distort their exemplary vocal lines. The recitatives included are extremely important and the lines are tossed back and forth with unrestrained enjoyment. Conductor Myung-Whun Chung gives the singing actors plenty of space to express their ideas, my favorite example being "Il Barbiere" where the tempi slows down as Rosina and Figaro work out the details of their plan.

The booklet does not include libretti, but since the selections are from well-known operas, it's not a problem. But it does include marvelous pictures of Cecilia and Bryn, this alone is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. Like the reviewer from San Francisco, I also loved the ice-cream shot.

After listening to this album, all I could say was "I want more." I hope these wonderful young artists would get together real soon and give us another album to treasure. By the way, if you liked this one, check out the one from Olga Borodina and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. They also shine, but in a different program (Dunque io son being the only common number) and they have completely different but also lustrous voices. But from pure fun standpoint, I've never heard a more delightful album than Cecilia and Bryn. Don't delay and get it now!

Good introduction to Rossini.......2007-03-15

This is a typically good quality MADACY MUSIC GROUP (Canada) CD - a remastering of original recordings released by Mediaphon (Stuttgart, Germany). The overtures of The Barber of Seville & William Tell are probably the most recognizable of Rossini's opera works, and both pieces are treated with full honors by the orchestras. The final set pieces are opera highlights from WILLIAM TELL. The full, serene voices of soprano of Irene Jaumillet and bass Jean Bortheyre place this rendition among the best! There is nothing disappointing whatsoever about this CD - you will never tire of listening to it!

Operaphiles in search of the lost art of the bel canto baritone will find a virtual holy grail in the form of Mattia Battistini. Born in 1856, he is the oldest singer of his generation who recorded extensively in his prime. In contrast to the emphatic, overt emotionalism typical of verismo singers, Battistini spins out effortless, lavishly decorated lines, sustained by virtue of prodigious breath control. Introspective phrases are embellished by unexpected accents and flamboyant, dynamic surges, best exemplified in a 1906 group of Ernani excerpts. Highlighting the 1902 Warsaw recordings are a snappy yet restrained "Largo al factotum" and Wagner's song to the Evening Star from Tannhaüser, sung in mellifluous Italian.
