A thing or two about Mr. Hadley.......2005-03-28

I am a tenor leggiero studying mostly Rossini and Mozart at a conservatory. Had I sung "Ecco ridente" as poorly as Jerry Hadley for my last jury, I would have failed! I've never heard of a tenor being hired to sing such poor runs and coloratura. The final aria "Cessa di piu" is equally laughable. There is absolutely no reason for him to sing the role of the Count because it is absolutely beyond him vocally. I've been looking for a good recording of this role to learn from, but clearly that will be a feat! It is a shame that I had to spend such a lot of money on this one. Don't waste your time or money listening to Hadley sing Rossini.

Fantastic.......2004-07-09

It took me a long time to get this recording - out of stock, delayed delivery - but it paid. I love it. I find Jerry Hadley's interpretation of that serenade very well done - exagerations included - and Thomas Hampson's Figaro is excellent. I'm glad I persevered and waited for the disk to arrive!

So Disappointing.......2002-05-09

I love Hampson and Ramey, so I bought this recording. Ramey is, as nearly always, really great as Basilio -- tightly melodic and slyly expressive. But Hampson, whom I usually love for his rich voice and emotive musical expression, sounds mechanical, abrupt, and bored. (He leaves out the high note in his entrance aria, too, which always makes me feel cheated.) Hadley and Menzter have a lot of trouble singing the coloratura parts; Hadley even sings the wrong notes sometimes. The direction is uninspired and plodding. All in all, a lifeless recording.

I have the version with Lopardo, Domingo, and Battle, and that's much better, despite its flaws. Lopardo is echelons above Hadley for spirited, romantic coloratura (Lopardo is one of the few masterful coloratura tenors out there), and although Domingo and Battle sing it straight rather than in whimsical Rossini style, they at least get all the notes right and sing technically well. Battle sings the "small notes" fast and dead center.

Hampson is so much better in his "No Tenors Allowed" and his "Portrait" recordings that I was really disappointed that he doesn't exhibit the same sparkle in this one.

A recording for the principles.......2000-12-01

This is a fine recording if you admire the voices of the three principles: Hampson, Hadley and Mentzer, which I do. You will find them at their best and most musical. However, if you do not care for them then I wouldn't recommend buying this recording. Besides the absurd three disc price, the ensemble and conducting is not very memorable. For a fine digital recording, I'd reccomend the Larmore, Hagagard set or, for a budget price, the Ganassi, Vargas recording is superb. As far as a classic recording, the Callas is awesome.

MR HADLEY AND MR HAMPSON AT THEIR BEST.......2000-07-08

All the freshness of Mr. Hadleys voice can be appreciated through the count of almaviva's arias. Definetivelly the best Rossinian performer. This is a MUST HAVE record for those who appreciate Rossini-Beaumarchais masterpiece.
