4 out of 5 stars 20 Hours of Dvorak at a Bargain Price.......2004-08-03

This 17-CD set collects together in one box all the published orchestral works of Antonin Dvorak. It's neatly done: each CD is in a paper envelope and there is a 51-page booklet (with knowledgable and helpful notes for each disc) all fitted into a cardboard box no thicker than that ordinarily used for a two-CD opera recording. All this music has been issued previously on separate discs or sets by Naxos and most of it is, if I'm not mistaken, still available that way. But this collection is one easy way to scoop up all of Dvorak's orchestral music at once. There is much music here that is almost never heard, certainly not in the concert hall and even on CD. For instance, I cannot recall ever seeing a recording (and I know I've never heard in performance) Dvorak's 'Intermezzi.' And the rarely-heard 'Legends' are nicely done here by Stephen Gunzenhauser and the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Of course, the name of the orchestra tells you something: some of these performances were recorded before the breakup of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Yes, some of the recordings go back to the late 1980s. No matter - the sound is quite acceptable throughout.

There are numerous participants in these recordings, many of them orchestras in the Czecho-Slovak area, as well as the Polish National Radio Orchestra, the Russian Philharmonic and even London's Royal Philharmonic (in a smashing performance, with Maria Kliegel, sure one of our best current cellists, in the Cello Concerto). Conductors include Gunzenhauser, Antoni Wit, Camilla Kolchinsky, Dmitry Yablonsky, Michael Halasz, Zdenek Kosler, Libor Pesek, and Robert Stankovksy.

Obviously one wouldn't buy this set for the most familiar Dvorak pieces - the 'New World' Symphony, the Cello Concerto, the Slavonic Dances - if that was all one was interested in. There are too many fine performances of those already on the market. But how many of you have recordings of poorly known but top-drawer works like the 'Czech Suite,' the 'American Suite,' (it is fashionable to dismiss this suite, but it's actually one of Dvorak's best), or some of the orchestral music from his many operas--overtures to 'King and Charcoal Burner,' 'The Jacobin,' 'Kate and the Devil,' 'Rusalka'? All of these, and more, are here. I recently returned from a trip and the only music I took along was this box of Dvorak. I never got sated, or bored, by it.

I was also quite taken by the performance of one of my favorite pieces by Dvorak, his 'Wind Serenade,' here played by the Oslo Philharmonic Wind Soloists. And there are marvelous performances by Gunzenhauser and the Polish NRSO of 'The Noon Witch,' 'The Golden Spinning Wheel,' and (a particular favorite of mine) 'The Wild Dove.'

And then there's the super-bargain Naxos price. This is an easy recommendation for the music lover in the market for this specific collection of music.

3 out of 5 stars FIRST COMPLETE RECORDING.......2001-02-24

THE NEW RECORDING WAS MADE IN KOLN AFTER A SUCESSFULL CONCERT PERFORMANCE OF THIS RARE OPERA. THE ONLY RECORDING AVAILIBLE BEFORE WAS ON SUPRAPHON LABEL (A CZECH RADIO PRODUKTION FROM THE 1950TH) WHICH WAS HEAVILY CUT FROM ITS CURRENT 164 MINUTES TO 92) SO OBVIOUSLY THIS NEW RECORDING MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR THE FIRST TIME TO HEAR MORE THAN ONE ADDITIONAL HOUR OF MUSIC. THIS IS THE ONLY BIG ADVANTAGE OF THIS SET. SOPRANO OLGA ROMANKO SINGS WITH A DARK TONE, BUT HER INTONATION, AS WELL AS DICTION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I DID SEE HER ON FEW OCCASIONS (AS LEONORA IN TROVATORE & DESDEMONA IN OTELLO), BUT BOTH SUFFERED FROM THE SAME PROBLEM. IRINA TSCHISTJAKOVAS DARK MEZZO IS ALSO UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE, RESEMBELING A LOT THE CZECH MEZZOSOPRANO VERA SOUKUPOVA (EX. ERDA IN BOHMS RING). THE ONLY CZECH SINGERS ARE TENOR PETR STRAKA & IVAN KUSNJER, BOTH NOT VERY ATTRACTIVE IN COLOR, BUT VOCALY SECURE. GERD ALBRECHT CONDUCTS THIS GRAND CZECH OPERA ALLA MEYERBEER WITH SENSE FOR DETAIL, BUT IT IS PITY THAT HE WAS NOT ABLE TO COLLABORATE WITH A BETTER QUARTET OF PRINCIPALS (TODAYS EVA URBANOVA OR GABRIELA BENACKOVA, EVA RANDOVA & PETER DVORSKY IN THEIR PRIME WOULD BEEN MORE SUITABLE FOR THE DEMANDING PARTS). IF YOU LOVE DVORAK'S RUSALKA, BUY IT; IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE PIECE COMPLETE DO THE SAME; BUT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE STYLE OF THE PIECE PLESE TURN TO THE SUPRAPHON RECORDING.

5 out of 5 stars Rare opportunity.......2003-05-31

Yes, this is rare opportunity to hear a great voices of Tikalova (Vanda), Blachut (Slavoj) or Bednar (Roderich). Historical recording - not for technical fans of 5:1 chanels and J.Cura.

2 out of 5 stars Great Opera, Mediocre Recording.......1999-12-03

The good--Dvorak composed a breathtaking grand opera that has Czeck flair and supurb confidence in the musical writing. The chorus and orchestra of the Prague Radio are solid, committed, and refreshingly familiar with the material. Dyk conducts fluently and with great power and nuance. The bad--Recorded from radio broadcasts in 1951, the sound is excruciatingly insufficient to encompass the wide range of orchestral and vocal production. The singers are miked too close and the orchestra takes a back seat with balances always leaving some section of the orchestra (usually the winds and percussion) and chorus (the men) inaudible. This recording boasts a cast of the most competent Czeck singers that weren't of international fame and although they are no less than capable in this vocal writing and language, they are no more than that, failing to create living characters from the horrendous libretto. The extensive cuts in the score and the unbelievable amount of recording problems leaves this as admittedly a "historical document." The ugly--this opera, which is just as good as any French grand opera of that period if not better, deserves a better, more up-to-date recording. Long overdue for its time in the sun.

Note the first item, an extremely obscure but characteristically attractive Dvorák overture. Even the remaining concert overtures are far less well known than they ought to be, especially if you believe that Dvorák is still a greatly underrated composer. Fortunately, Stephen Gunzenhauser (an American conductor) and the BBC's second orchestra collaborate in very effective, idiomatic performances that are very well recorded. Don't forget the wonderful Václav Talich recordings of most of this music for Supraphon, but for a modern recording this is as fine as any, regardless of price. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exuberant Overtures.......2005-07-23

I've had this disc for over a decade now, and after re-discovering it several days ago, I'm amazed anew by how fresh the music is. Not a single note sounds false, or full of cliched romantic rhetoric. Even the more operatic piece, the overture to Vanda, has a clear purpose, and is full of typical Dvorakian melody. But best of all are the great trilogy of overtures--In Nature's Realm, Carnival, and Othello. Each share a motto theme, and explore it from different angles--the pastoral, the exuberant, and the dramatic. The Carnival overture is still the greatest draw, a piece that never gets old, never sounds boring, and is played here with tremendous aplomb. The Othello overture is magnificent, too, a piece very similar in tone to Dvorak's 7th symphony, with an unusual dramatic intensity that never quite becomes tragic. In Nature's Realm is a lovely pastoral piece somewhat in the style of the 5th symphony, very charming. And finally we have the My Home overture, perhaps the lightest piece here, but full of happiness and delight. Once heard it will linger in the memory for days.

Guzenhauser has done his fair share of recordings for Naxos, but this is easily one of his best. The orchestra plays beautifully, and I don't think the sound is bad at all. It's a magnificently convceived program and should be in every Dvorak fan's collection.

3 out of 5 stars Recording is good but not great........1999-05-09

In general the music is good. Bass is distorted. Sounds like it was recorded in a barrel. A good recording for the price level.
