5 out of 5 stars Famous Freni-Pavarotti live performance at low cost.......2005-09-24

"La figlia del reggimento" is one of the greatest of all operatic comedies. Here, it is performed live by a widely beloved cast and is presented in acceptably good sound. This Opera d'Oro set showcases the young Luciano Pavarotti, from a time when he could still be taken seriously. The equally youthful Mirella Freni appears and sings very well--which is high praise, indeed. To determine what an impression these two superstars make, all you have to do is read the preceding Amazon reviews.

The quality of the performance, the fame of the singers and the reasonableness of the price all demand that five stars be assigned to this Opera d'Oro set.

Having said that, I feel obliged to point out that this is far from being the best performance of "La figlia" to be found on CD. It is easily out-pointed in every aspect by the old--indeed, the ancient studio production originally issued by Cetra, now available in happily remastered form from Fonit, also at bargain price.

The general conception and execution of the old studio recording is lighter, brighter, smarter and simply more joyous than the later live performance. The soundscape of the remastered Fonit set is appreciably better than that of Od'O, too. The daughter of the regiment in the earlier set is Lina Pagliughi, an old-fashioned soprano who disguised her truly formidable technique by seeming to float like a butterfly over Donizetti's dancing melodies. In comparison, Freni, the younger of the two sopranos at the date of her recording, seems laboring, even matronly. The Fonit tenor is Cesare Valletti, a student of Tito Schipa who emerged as a better vocal technician than ever his old master had been. He sings those famous high C's far more easily and with more consistent tone than Pavarotti and, moreover, he does it while staying in character. Compared to the elegantly graceful Valletti, Pavarotti seems loud, coarse and harsh of voice.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Production!.......2005-02-09

Why this production does not receive more publicity is beyond me. Everyone sings to perfection. Pavarotti is simply awe-inspiring (9 High C's LIVE, if that doesn't tell you enough), Freni is alternately charming, sympathetic, and funny at all the appropriate moments, and Ganzogno is a paternal and yet amusing captain. It took me an entire day to get to the second act because I was too busy listening to the first one over and over and over again! My only criticism would be of the slow conducting during Tonio's famous 9-C aria, which I feel detracts from some of the excitement that it's meant to arouse. Other than that, a first rate production that I would recommend to anyone with any taste in music :D!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-04-30

You can't get a better bang for your buck than this. This is a 1969 performance, Pavarotti is in top form, expect the best and you won't be disappointed. In case you didn't know, this is the opera where the famous aria with NINE high C's comes from ("Qual destin, qual favor.").

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING: DISCOVER A RARELY PLAYED GEM.......2006-11-03

I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. I found this CD extremely enjoyable. These are really abridged versions of both operas: Auber's Fra Diavolo (in italian, originaly in French) and Donizetti's La Figlia del Reggimento (in Italina, though orignal also in French).
First of all, even though "La Figlia" was written originaly in French (Le Fille du Regiment), until 2 or 3 decades ago it was mostly known and played in the Italian version. The French version has been appearing more often since the 60s and 70s, a great example of the French opera comique, a form mastered by Donizetti.
Auber's Fra Diavolo was an amazing discovery for me. Auber was one of the most popular composers in 19th Century Paris. His operas are very lively and beautifully melodic He was a master of the opera comique format, and even of french grand opera (his 'La Muette de Portici' is considered the first well-defined example of the grand opera form). Fra Diavolo can be compared with Rossini's comic operas, only that in a french style. The arias and ensembles are richly melodic and quite interesting. The opera made me a fan of Auber, and made me find out more about his work. I was only familiar with "la Muete" (a serious opera). But he might have been better suited for the "opera comique" format. 'Manon Lescaut', 'Le Domino Noir', 'Le Cheval de Bronze' are just a few examples of his comic operas. They are gems that in recent decades have been rediscovered and good recordings of them do exist (available here on Amazon).
I would really recommend any fan of Rossini, Donizetti and other composers of opera buffa to buy this CD. Do get it, give it a chance. It will introduce you to a new and just as fascinating comic opera form. It is fascinating to notice the influence of Rossini and italian opera buffa in general, but then you can also tell that they are also very french at the same time. Just like me i am sure you will end up being a fan of french oprea comique, and maybe even also exploring other of the opera comic composers, such as Adams, Offenbach, Messager, Boieldieu, Gretty and many more.

1 out of 5 stars Four High C's?.......2006-03-07

If you want a very truncated version of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" sung in Italian (original is in French), with the famous tenor aria, which should contain 9 high C's, cut in half (thus only 4 high C's are sung) then by all means get this two CD set.....but why would you? I wouldn't even call this a highlights CD, as so many of the selections are truncated. Despite some nice singing and orchestral playing, this recording is to be avoided. Not the genuine article. Oh yeah, there also is Auber's "Fra Diavolo" on disc one if you care....I didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Good fun and elegance in this classic performance........2001-07-03

If I could have only one Donizetti opera on my desert island it would be this one, either in its original French version "La fille du régiment" or in Donizetti's 1840 Italian revision "La figlia del reggimento". If I could have only one recording of it, I would chose this 1950 Italian performance conducted originally for Cetra by Mario Rossi. Rossi manages to stress the elegant, aristocratic character of the score, without allowing proceedings to develop into farce.

The singers include the remarkable Lina Pagliughi, famous as the coloratura soprano who sang Gilda in two recordings of Verdi's "Rigoletto", firstly at the age of 19 and secondly with Ferruccio Tagliavini and Giuseppe Taddei in 1953 when she was 46. The young Pagliughi came to the notice of the ageing Luisa Tetrazzini who first wanted to adopt her and then later helped supervise her training in Italy. Pagliughi's singing here might suggest part of the Italian tradition dating back to Tetrazzini, which included Toti dal Monte and Amelita Galli-Curci. In the role of Maria, Pagliughi's limpid, legato singing - a descending scale like a string of pearls - is most affecting in the beautiful F Minor "Convien partir" at the end of Act One, and she elsewhere conveys plenty of charm and vivacity. Of a weight perhaps four or five times that of other prima donnas, Pagliughi sings airily of the occasion when she was picking flowers near a precipice and slipped and fell into the arms of the young TyroleanTonio.

The Tonio with strong arms in this performance is Cesare Valletti, who copes easily with the high C's in the passage in which he expresses his joy at the prospect of marrying Maria. The cast also includes Sesto Bruscantini and Rina Corsi, singers who avoid the temptations to clown around in their parts.

Reissues and remasterings of Italian Cetra opera sets come and go, and collectors might have trouble obtaining a copy of this one. A single CD of extracts from this complete set, marketed by the budget Italian Opera label, is listed for ordering and purchasing occasionally.

5 out of 5 stars Brava La Moffo!.......2007-03-15

This lesser known and still wonderful Donizetti opera tells the story of a young woman Marie who was abandoned as a baby in the Tyrolese mountains and reared by a regiment of French Grenadier soldiers. She falls in love with a young man and finds her long-lost mother Marquise de Birkenfeld who bore Marie out of wedlock. Marie is pressured into an arranged marriage, but seeing her despair the Marquise finally relents thus allowing her to marry her true love. The performance displays an incredibly talented and vocally perfect Anna Moffo. This is live recording from 12/60 and the sound quality is very good++ - much better than most live recordings from this period. It's a wonderful chance to hear the great Moffo early in her career. Plus, opening your ears to a beautiful and touching opera by Donizetti. The only complaint that I have is this cd is highlights only. It would be terrific if only they would release the entire opera considering the sound quality being so good.
