Customer Reviews:
La Stupenda at her best.......2007-05-06
This 2 CD set is entitled "La Stupenda," which creates extremely high expectations. Joan Sutherland meets those expectations on this CD; she is, indeed, "La Stupenda." One of the interesting aspects of this set is Dame Joan's singing some non operatic works (such as "Home Sweet Home" or "Where Are the Songs We Sung?" or "Falling in Love with Love"). In the end, this is a wonderful compilation of the art of Joan Sutherland.
First, let's consider a sampling of the cuts on these CDs.
"O Zittre Nicht" is from Mozart's "Magic Flute" and it is a challenge to sopranos, with its series of staccato high notes. Sutherland essays this well. There are some nice trills; she hits the high notes well. The series of (treacherous) high notes toward the end is handled very nicely by Sutherland. In short, she scintillates, with a closing high note well hit.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," she sings "O luce di questi'anima." Her voice and technique are well suited for Donizetti (and Bellini). The cantabile is smoothly sung. The cabaletta is rollicking. Her coloratura technique is on target; the ornamentation is compelling. There are trills, runs, high notes and other ornamentation well done. The close is nice (although there may be a bit of a scoop on the final high note).
From "Beatrice di Tenda" (by Bellini), we hear ""Eccomi pronta. . .Deh, se un'urna." The cantabile is sung well. She hits notes clearly. The spirited cabaletta follows. Sutherland exhibits somewhat less ornamentation than usual, but trills are well done and, overall, the piece is nicely sung. The close features clean high notes.
"Home Sweet Home." This kind of illustrates Joan Sutherland's work nicely. I can hardly make out the words (and it is sung in English). But it is an interesting version. She sings the song straight, without overpowering the song with operatic technique (an occasional trill actually works out well).
Elsewhere, I have commented on her 1959 version of the "Mad Scene" from "Lucia di Lammermoor" (from her album "The Greatest Hits").
"Falling in Love with Love" is an interesting cut. This is a classic Rodgers and Hart song. Sutherland sings it pretty well, and one can pick up the words cleanly. However, one might compare this with Anna Moffo's version, which is more musical. Sutherland's version is a bit too operatic for what the song is about.
Finally, "Ah non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula," a great coloratura tune! This is taken at a sprightly pace. Sutherland exhibits good coloratura technique. There is nice ornamentation. She precisely nails high notes. In the repeat, the florid singing ramps up. This is a compelling version, with series of staccato high notes to close the work out.
Thus, this 2 CD set is a welcome entrée to the body of work of Dame Joan Sutherland. Sometimes (as with "Home Sweet Home") one has a hard time picking out the words. But with Sutherland, the skills and techniques create a compelling oeuvre that is well worth attending to.
this is the one to buy.......2007-04-18
I'm not an opera expert I just enjoy it. La Stupenda has the best of Joan Sutherland in a two CD set and it's amazing. She looked like a nice, quiet housewife but an indescribalbe voice. Her aria from Norma gave me chills and her version of "I Dreamed I Dwelt in Marble Halls" is flat out one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.
La Stupenda lives up to her name.......2006-11-12
Joan Sutherland was undeniably one of the greatest operatic sopranos of the 20th century. This comprehensive two-CD retrospective of her long career will delight her many fans, and serve as a fitting introduction for those unfamiliar with her artistry. The two CDs span a period of nearly thirty years, from 1959 to 1988, with the majority of the 27 tracks recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when her voice was at its' astounding best. Sutherland was renowned first and foremost as a dramatic coloratura, and her supple technique is brilliantly illustrated in selections such as the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor; Doll Song from The Tales of Hoffmann; Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute; and the seldom-performed Concerto for Coloratura Soprano by Gliere. As her career progressed, her voice became larger and more powerful, as demonstrated by the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and In Questa Reggia from Puccini's Turandot. Lastly, Sutherland was a diva who was not afraid to let her hair down once in a while, and we are treated to lighter selections such as Where are the songs we sung? by Noel Coward, and Falling in love with love, by Rogers and Hart. Highly recommended for all lovers of great singing.
La Stupenda, Amore, amore, amore.......2006-01-28
I adore this woman's voice. And I love this cd. I was really happy to find an aria of "Esclarmonde" which is virtually impossible to find as well as some of the more lesser known works of hers such as Mozart's Queen of Night, although I wish she had done a recording of the revenge aria (Der Holle Roche) The whole cd was wonderful to hear but if I had to make on complaint it's that I didn't buy her Isolde's Liebestod but the woman can sing Lucia better than just about anyone so I'll forgive her for not sticking with the Wagner. In fact I am thrilled that she chose Lucia over Isolde because frankly acting and interperation was never her strong suit, it was the pure beauty of her voice. It's always a grand pleasure to listen to Joan kick butt in any coloratura arias but of course she set the bar so high that there is yet a coloratura since her that can do those arias half as well. She has spoiled me for life and that's why she is La Stupenda.
La Stupenda - well deserved title for Joan.......2006-01-12
I am not an opera expert by any stretch of the imagination - but I love opera. I love the expertise and beautiful voices of these hardworking singers. When I first heard Joan sing, it was from a recording she made late in her career and I honestly thought, what's the big deal about her? So, I decided to get The Art of Prima Donna album, and all I have to say is WOW! In her prime, this woman was a fantastic singer! While she wasn't the dramatist like Callas was (I also love Callas), her range and the way she hit each note so precisely was amazing! So, I bought La Stupenda. I loved the piece she did from Handel's Alcia and the fantastic Rossini duet she did with Marilyn Horn. The entire album is wonderful. I particularly like how Joan's high notes are never screechy - she makes those high notes sound so effortless. I also appreciate how she had such control over her vibrato - not too trilly (I like trilly - especially by Beverly Sills - however, not every song should be all trill). Finally, I think that Joan was one of the few sopranos that didn't try to drown everyone out. When she sang a duet, she blended with the other singer - how rare! Not all singers seem to be able to accomplish that - duets shouldn't be a competition. This album is worth every penny. Joan was one of the great singers of the 20th century and she deserves her title of La Stupenda!

This disc is remarkable in many ways. Not only does it bring together two of opera's reigning lower-voiced superstars, it shows them at their best and presents, in addition, repertoire we rarely get to hear. In the past, Samuel Ramey has occasionally come across as bland and Thomas Hampson as just a bit too eager for a man with what is essentially a very lyric baritone voice. But their chemistry here works: Ramey is filled with passion--some of it comic (as Don Pasquale), some of it vitriolic (as Fiesco), and some of it loony (as Attila); throughout, his burnished tone never lets him down. Hampson is charming and in handsome voice as well--equally light and patterful when comic (a delicious Malatesta), and nicely dire (Ezio and Rodrigue). He isn't up to Simon Boccanegra's stature either vocally or emotionally (for that, listen to the classic performance of Piero Cappuccilli, but the sheer loveliness of his singing is enough to carry the day. A must for fans of either gent, and an intelligent, unhackneyed collection of music to boot. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
The Troubles with Thomas.......2005-12-31
This could have been a fantastic album, but ends up falling well short of that owing to Thomas Hampson. I have never understood the fawning praise Mr. Hampson receives. His voice is unpleasant, his musical interpretations are well-below average, and his coloratura is completely non-existant -- for an excellent example of this, compare, in the Pasquale duet, Ramey's exquisite descending scales in the "aspetta, aspetta, cara sposina" phrase with Hampson's sloppy counterpart, "il poverino, sogna vendetta". The "i" in "poverino" is supposed to carry over four separate notes, and not one note, a whooping cough, and a closing note! Judging by some interviews I've read and/or seen, Mr. Hampson appears to be a decent, down-to-earth gentleman. As an opera singer, however, he's mediocre at best. This recording is worth owning thanks to Ramey, who is absolutely top-notch.
Make sure you buy 2!.......2005-01-05
One to keep, one to give away. You'll wind up burning one for the car and one for the office regardless. A friend lent me this CD and I've bought 4 so far. One of the best! I can't recommend it enough.
But one complaint.......2004-08-21
Amusing concept, wonderful singing. But one question: Why was the Dandini-Don Magnifico duet from LA CENERENTOLA not included? Since they wanted to have two buffo duets, I think that would have been a better choice that the MATRIMONIO SEGRETO number.
Voices of power.......2004-03-21
It had always been my impression that when basses and baritones got together to sing, they were either intent on murdering each other, or else they were engaged in a jolly, male-bonding patter song. "No Tenors Allowed" (NTA) has examples of both of these types of duets. But the lower voices are also opera's authority figures, so we also have a smattering of Doges and Kings on this CD.
The basso cantante of Samuel Ramey and the baritone of Thomas Hampson swirl together like chocolate liqueur in coffee. This CD vibrates with dark sonics. Both artists bring their considerable powers of interpretation to these roles--no fooling around with buffo here, just wonderful singing.
There are a total of eight duets by Cimarosa, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi on this CD. Among my favorites:
"Cheti, cheti immantinente" from Donizetti's "Don Pasquale"--The elderly Don Pasquale (Ramey) and his personal physician Malatesta (Hampson) plot to catch Pasquale's young 'bride' in the garden with her lover. This might not sound like a particularly jolly situation, but the duet captures the verve of a hilarious plot--lots of "oh ho's," "ha ha's," and "hee hee's" scattered throughout--the very epitome of bass-baritone hilarity. Listening to this duet, I'm almost tempted to regret Ramey's preference for serious roles over lighter repertory like "Don Pasquale." His old buffoon schemes and whines and chuckles without a trace of vulgarity, just pure musicality. Both singers are patter-perfect.
"Suona ogni labbro il mio nome" from Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra"--This is the first of two great duets between adversaries Jacopo Fiesco, patrician and currently Doge of Genoa (Ramey) and Simon Boccanegra, a plebian and the future Doge (Hampson). Fiesco still hasn't forgiven Boccanegra for stealing the love of his daughter, Maria, who has borne Boccanegra a daughter out of wedlock. In this duet, Ramey's fury contrasts vividly with Hampson's pleading, "Padre mio, pieta t'implora..." as the baritone tells him of the loss of his little daughter (Fiesco's granddaughter). What Boccanegra does not yet know is that his lover, Maria has died. This duet is another fine example of a Verdian father-daughter heartbreaker, in which both men are mourning the loss of a daughter. Hampson sings with dramatic conviction, almost a sweet sound compared to the menacing undercurrent of Ramey's bass, but also dignified.
If you are a fan of the lower fach in Italian opera, NTA is a 'must' for your CD library.
A Masterful Double Bill.......2002-08-13
This is one cd that I may actually wear out. I love this collection! What a marvelous idea, to highlight the most under-represented opera format--the bass/baritone duet--and bring together two of the current best--Ramey and Hampson--to pull it off. I am a bass-baritone and find all these selections a wonderful change of pace from the usuall opera recording. The liner notes are hilarious, with their tongue-in-cheek (or not) poke at tenors. My only complaint, and it is a significant one, is this the libreto. Come on, guys, no English (or German or French) translations? It would have helped with the duets from lessor known operas, Cimarosa's, for instances. But all in all, an excellent effort that I recommend highly!

Aspects of Verdi and Bel Canto!.......2004-10-02
Mr. Bergonzi is a famous Verdi tenor and this collection is simply sublime, beyond words. His singing is both accented and lyrical, perhaps too lyric for the ideal Verdi voice. Bergonzi's Verdi comes with a bel canto approach.
Well this is where we may separate a Verdi voice from Verdi style. Bergonzi is a Verdi stylist par excellence and deserves the highest respect possible where certainly no other tenor since Lauri Volpi, with his more virile and wide ranging voice, has realized the magnitude and beauty of Verdi's style combined with the great dramatic accents and declamation.
Among the greatest Verdi stylists, which are rarer among tenors than the other voice categories, are Martinelli, Lauri-Volpi, Bergonzi, and even Veriano Luchetti; rare indeed but these men have the tone, the accent, the power, the legato, and the INTELLIGENCE to bring Verdi's drama to life. That is what Verdi wanted after all: "Accent Accent Accent"

Much more than "South Pacific".......2007-07-21
Such is the nature of pop culture that beloved italian opera singer who sang classical music all his life, was upon his death remember chifely for his later Broadway succes, when in fact Broadway was just a short chapter in oterwise dignified and serious career. There is nothing wrong in "South Pacific" of course, but there is so much more to Pinza and this is why "Prima Voce" is important to represent how this thundering bass worked his way from Italy to Metroploitan.Lots of goodies here,my favourite arias from "Don Giovanni" and "Aida",also nice to cmpare his later recordings with very first ones done in Italy with conductor Carlo Sabajno (acoustic! before they started making elctric recordings) apparently his talent was there from the very start.Excellent.

Callas fan.......2006-08-25
I bought this CD as a gift for my opera buff son, who is a Callas fan. He said the CD had some tracks that he did not have and it was a valuable addition to his collection.
Callas from the vaults.......2006-07-16
This anthology (released in 1997) is a compilation of material from the vaults of EMI, some of it released for the very first time, and all, except the "Macbeth" Sleepwalking scene, after Callas had died. In other words, material that Callas did not approve for release. In the case of the "Macbeth" aria, it was discovered that the closing section on the mono vesrion differed slightly from the stereo version, and was interesting enough to publish separately. In this case the difference, is very slight. We do hear Lady Macbeth moving off into the distance in this version, but otherwise it is as excellent and inimitable as the stero version. Indeed, no other Lady Macbeth comes within a mile of Callas's dramatic insight and musical perspicacity.
For the rest, we have Callas in variable voice, not surprising as there is a 16 year gap between the first and last of these recordings. We have both test versions of Donna Anna's "Non mi dir" from "Don Giovanni". These were made just prior to her first studio recording of "Lucia di Lammermoor", and were made to give the engineers a feel for the voice. Differences between the two performance are again slight, the miking being slightly more becoming in the second version. In both versions, Callas sails through the aria as if it was the easiest thing in the world (it isn't) and gives the lie to people who say she couldn't sing Mozart. Her legato in the first part of the aria is, as usual, perfection, the breath control prodigious, and of course the coloratura of the second part holds no terrors for her whatsoever. Moreover, she invests the notes with a character lacking in many other versions of this aria. After all the words are "Perhaps someday Heaven will take pity on me", sentiments often forgotten by sopranos wishing to show off their technique.
The rest of this disc is taken up with alternative takes of material, that were released during Callas's lifetime. The majority is from sessions recorded between 1960 and 1961 with Antonio Tonini conducting. Though she is in fesher voice here, than she was when she re-recorded them with Nicola Rescigno, the later verions are often preferable, being more committed. However I do prefer the version of Cenerentola's aria published here to the one that eventually appeared on her Rossini/Donizetti Arias disc.
You will probably want to know about the "Aida" scene with Corelli. To be honest, I found this vocally rather trying, though certain things, like the insinuating way, she sings "se tu m'ami" are incomparable. Corelli is in terrific voice, making one regret that he wasn't used on Callas's complete set, recorded 10 years before. The biggest surprise is the last 3 arias, recorded in 1969, 4 years after Callas's last stage appearances. The "Vespri Siciliani" and "Attila" arias are actually preferable to the 1965 takes, both sung more smoothly and with lovely, gentle tone. The tessitura of the "Lombardi" troubles her more, and this is rather trying to listen to.
However, when genius is involved, as it most definitely is here, then we can make allowances. Callas's musical and dramatic instincts never let her down, even when her voice does. We will never hear her like again, and we are the richer for having these performances, even if the diva herself would have prefered us not to hear them.
Maria Callas In Great Studio Voice Rarities.......2005-05-16
What year was this recording made ? She sings arias from great operas with the Paris Opera orchestra. EMI did much for distributing Callas records during the post World War II Era and culminating in the late 70's. Maria Callas continues to be a much talked about opera singer, and were she alive today, she'd revel in it, even in the mixed praises. For some, Callas had a big voice, no doubt, but it was "ugly" (actual quote), it was wobbly, it was choked, it was forced, as if she were dying. But that's only because Callas found that opera was a passion, and it was indeed a matter of life and death for her. Opera was her life and it was her death. She lost her voice in the 70's, her illustrious career, which read like that of a Hollywood movie star- complete with Audrey Hepburn image- ended in a disastrous concert in Japan. She died in 1977 in her Paris apartment, almost like Violetta in the last act of La Traviata. In this recording, we find her in great voice, though I'm no expert on Callas. Most collect the earliest recorded material- 40's and 50's. In concert in Paris, we find she has a vast repertoire and glorious dramatic technique. "Ocean, Thy Might Monster" she sings in its original English, with excellent English diction and powerful lungs. She sings "O Don Fatale" from Verdi's Don Carlo, a role that is usually given to dramatic mezzo-sopranos. But her interpretation takes the crown. An aria from Aida, "Non mi dir" from Don Giovanni, sounding graceful and tortured as Dona Ana pleads with her fiance to be patient with her, for she is still in mourning for her dead father. Everything on here is a string of pearls and all fans will not regret owning this album. Thank you EMI for giving us the great singers on record.

awesome.......2007-03-29
Mom picked this up randomly somewhere and it's been in the car ever since. I was just listening again today and it's absolutely fantastic. (I adore the Aida overture with the trumpets!). I'm not a huge fan of opera, so for me this is fantastic. I love the music, but am not into the vocals. This is all the instrumental cream!!! And you can't beat this price.

Beyond all description..........2006-09-19
As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.
An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09
...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.
Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07
This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.
