Korngold composed this charming comic opera at the ripe old age of 17. The story is simple: Court composer Wilhelm Arndt couldn't be happier. He has a loving wife, Laura; he's just gotten a promotion, and, best of all, a wealthy aunt has just kicked the bucket, leaving him a pile of money. The only thing he lacks is his best friend, who opportunely shows up but turns out to be a jealous jerk. Lusting after Laura, he convinces his superstitious friend that he should give something up to safeguard his good fortune, and suggests that once he finds out the truth about Laura's shady past, he can dump her without remorse. Laura's love and patience prove steadfast, however, and Wilhelm's friend finally gets the boot. It's all good clean fun, and it's performed here with the right lightness and zest. --David Hurwitz
