Bang for your buck.......2007-05-23

Lots of good music on this compilation. Originally bought it with just one piece in mind and ended up discovering numerous tracks that I enjoy as well. The music quality is well-above average and for less than $10, you can't beat it.

Nicely thought out program..........2007-02-09

This one disc contains many of the most beloved orchestral excerpts from opera(Sorry, no Wagner). They are competently played by a variety of NAXOS's usual roster of artists and orchestras. As I have stated before!
The NAXOS producers seem to include not so typical repetoire on most of their compilations. The lush interlude from Schmidts "Notre Dame" is a gem. Strauss's little known "1001 Nights" gives us a Viennese twist on the Arabian fantasy. The gushing brass of the introduction to Stenhamar's interlude to the "Song" leaves us wanting for more. Sure, you don't get Karajan or Bernstein like performances, but the disc as a whole is worth the budget price asked. Recording quality varies from track to track, good to excellent.

A Great Intro to Some of Opera's Orchestral Moments.......2003-12-20

Some of opera's (or related stage works') best orchestral moments are included on this CD. Starting with the joyous Prelude to Carmen and ending with the tour de force of the Dance of the Hours, this CD has it covered, at least as well as any near eighty minute CD can. If you are not familiar with classical music, this is a great opener. None of the tracks are "hard" to listen to- they just gracefully take you off to another world. For beginners make sure you listen to the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffman, Dance of the Hours from La Giocanda [I promise you, you will know it], and Meditation from Thais [no matter how supposedly "overplayed" it is, it is still one of the most beautiful songs], and Prelude to Carmen. For beginners and seasoned music aficionados [which I do not pretend to be], I beg you to listen to Interlude from Notre Dame by Schmidt. This is one of the most surprising songs on the entire CD. Very nice and every bit as enjoyable as the most popular ones. This piece is not often found on other CDs; thank goodness Naxos included it. For those with massive CD collections the few dollars you spend on this CD is worth Interlude from Notre Dame, and for the beginner, you will not find a better group of famous and not-so-famous songs.

A great selection. I bought one for my husband, and later the other one for my parents.
Quality, and a superb selection of masterpieces.
A must have for classical music lovers, and for everyone who wants to get introduced to classical music.

Probably the best one-volume compilation of Karajan available, with the most broad-based approachable track list currently being offered to the general enthusiast/collector. Back in the vinyl days, there were two-disc sets available like the "Karajan Super Concert" or the three-volume "Karajan Conducts" set on Angel. Some of these have been re-arranged and re-released with new or different cover art on CD too, but here is a newly remastered set just as good or better than any of those.

It also contains probably the best short essay on what Herbert von Karajan was all about by Axel Bruggemann, that I have ever read. A CD or two of the "Adagio" set by this conductor (also on DG) may be a nice supplement too, otherwise you can't really go wrong with this two-disc set at a fairly affordable price.

Karajan Forever: The "Eternal" Classical Music Album.......2005-09-26

Another fine recording of classical music, as conducted by the man considered to be the greatest conductor of the 20th century- Herbert Von Karajan, whose position as conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic made that particular orchestra unbeatable and at number one in the list of world's greatest orchestras. Karajan was involved with the Berlin Philharmonic's musical development for years, until his death in 89, before the Berlin Wall fell, an event he did not live to see. This recording has to the best of Karajan's many collected classical pieces on record. It is a perfect introduction to classical music itself and to Karajan's style. A plethora of composer and time periods- from Baroque, to Classical to Romantic- are all on here. Vivaldi's Spring opens the CD, and is followed by the melancholy and fatalistic sounding Baroque classic Albinoni Adagio in G. This is followed by Mozart's 40th symhony. The first Romantic Era symphony on here is Dvorak's famous New World Symphony, which Karajan conducts with supreme mastership. The Intermezzo from the verisimo opera Cavalleria Rusticana is on here and sounds absolutely breathtaking. The suite of Bizet's Carmen is musically intoxicating and the Bolero has never sounded hotter, except for maybe Zubin Mehta conducting it which I've heard live and know is absolutely wonderful. The famous Waltz from Tchaikovsky's ballet masterpiece Sleeping Beauty is on here as well as the Third Act Prelude to Verdi's Traviata. The final track on CD 1 is Saint Saens Organ Symphony Finale.

The second disc opens with a masterful version of the powerfully evocative Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, another Austrian composer Karajan championed. The Swan Theme from Swan Lake is on here, as well as the Viennese Waltz favorite On the Beautiful Blue Danube- something I didn't know Karajan even conducted. But being Austrian, I'm not surprised. Karajan even conducted Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus as well as other waltzes. Back to Baroque, he continues with the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by Bach and the gorgeous and somewhat gloomy Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck. The CD ends with the elegant and beautiful Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky's Nutracker. This is a must have for fans of classical music, as a lot of favorites are on here.

Meditation!.......2003-07-20

A veritable who's who of pieces & composers, the CDs Karajan Forever will hopefully live forever.
Herbert VonKarajan was the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1955 until his demise in 1989. His vision & helmsmanship of this magnificent orchestra have literally changed the way a whole generation heard music.

In this 2 CD collection, DG has kind of done a Greatest Hits. Everything from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi to Opera Overtures, Ballet Themes and Piano Concertos. There is truly something for everyone on this CD, but being an opera fan, 2 of my favorites are on disc 2. The Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana and the Meditation from Thais. This music simply transports the listener to another place and time. The Philharmonic is so in sync- so one that it is hard to believe how huge they really are. I can wholeheartedly recommend this CD without reservation. And it's a steal at $... for 2 new CDs. Great Mood Music.......2000-10-12

Literally everyone who hears this recording asks about it. I had the cassette tape version. When the tape wore out, I replaced it with the CD version. Get the CD. The dynamic range is impressive.

Some of the music is familiar, Pachelbel's Canon and the Albinoni Adagio. All of it is beautiful. A great early morning drive CD.

From Wagner to Gone With the Wind.......2001-12-01

If you've delved as far down Amazon.com's sales ranks as this, presumably you're looking for something new to listen to and are perhaps wondering what Notre Dame is like.

Schmidt seems to have been one of a number of highly competent composers working in Vienna in the early 20th century but eclipsed somewhat by Mahler and the second Viennese school. Notre Dame is a compact (in length; the forces required are considerable), well-crafted work. Its sound-world runs from Wagner and Bruckner to Mahler, Strauss and Korngold. Oddly, it also brings Respighi to mind. There is a deliberate contrast between the gorgeously schmaltzy Hungarian gypsy music associated with Esmeralda, and (more Lutheran than Catholic) chorale-like themes and organ for the cathedral and Grégoire.

This is, then, a work for those who know their Wagner, Bruckner, Strauss and Mahler by heart, who've "done" Korngold and are looking for something new and big and noisy and exotic: a late-flowering hot-house bloom. It will be of special interest to those looking to trace American film music back to its European origins: there is a definite touch of Gone with the Wind, of Star Wars even, in Notre Dame.

The reviewer from Rochester N.Y. is right about the cast and performance: they are very good. The sound is ripe. "German Romanticism" may, though, be misleading: this is as Austro-Hungarian as it comes.

Well worth buying.

Another voice of German Romanticism.......2001-07-31

Here is a chance to hear another voice of German Romanticism. Schmidt's opera is lush and tuneful, Esmerelda's theme especially falls gratefully on the ear. Hugo's sprawling novel is reduced to 2 acts and 5 locales. No Charles Laughton, Lon Chaney or Disney gargoyles here. The emphasis is on Esmerelda and the effect she has on the men she encounters. The recording boasts the talents of Gwyneth Jones, James King, Kurt Moll, Horst Laubenthal and Helmut Welker under the direction of Cristof Perick (I mention this only because there are no artists listed for the recording) They do a just representation of the work, although there is nothing to compare it to. One should be grateful that artists of this caliber have made this piece available, and it is certainly worth hearing. My only quibble is that Ms. Jones and Mr. King were captured at the tail end of their careers. While their interpretive talents survive, the voices certainly no longer retain the bloom of youth that is required for these characters. In all other respects this is a recording that repays the listener with some beautiful music and a glimpse of the late romaticism of the turn of the century (the last one, not the current one).

Stupendously Realistic Sound!.......2004-06-14

I bought this, not because I wanted a disc by the Netherlands Philharmonic (unknown orchestra to me) or by the equally unknown conductor Yakov Kreizburg, but because I couldn't get over the carping review posted by the guy from Arizona.

I have many Pentatone SACDs and they are almost uniformly excellent. I actually bought this one to see how bad it could be. After listening four times I must state that this disc is not bad at all - it is excellent. The sound is even better than many of my others.

Here we have realistic string timbres even in the dense writing high on the staff. When the strings are doubled by woodwinds, the fact is evident and both sets of instruments retain their individual character.

Not everyone will find Schmidt to their taste, he sort of sounds like Brahms talented little brother writing music (it is good music) decades after the passing of his more famous kin. While not influenced by Schoenberg, Bartok et al, Schmidt has moved forward in time and his writing, much of which is high on the staff, is difficult to record accurately. This one does the job and does it well. As for Kreiburg and the Netherlands Philharmonic, what a find!

I still puzzle why the previous review is so negative. I use a Sony DVP S9000 ES connected to a passive preamp to play SACDs. The amp is a 135 watt Musical Fidelity driving Magneplanar loudspeakers. They have big ribbon tweeters and are very accurate in the upper mids and highs. They are brutally revealing of any deficiency in recordings but this one was absolutely beautiful - the recording is superb! Five stars for the sound; I'm not so knowledgable of Schmidt that I would presume to comment on the performance. I would bet however that any question of balances should be addressed to the conductor not the recording engineers.

I understand that Pentatone multichannel recordings are intended to recreate the ambience of the recording venue not put you in the middle of the orchestra. I am really looking forward to hearing this in multi-channel when I can afford the extra equipment.

I try to keep my ears trained by attending live classical concerts in Boston's Symphony Hall and in Carnegie Hall. On average I attend a dozen concerts each season in those and other venues. I know what good string sound is. In stereo at least, this disc has it in spades.

Not what it should have been.......2003-05-23

Those of us who love the Schmidt 4th will rejoice at any new recording -- and this is its seventh (the 6th on CD). This beautiful, powerful work shouldn't be missed by anyone. But, alas, this is not the best recording. The performance itself isn't bad (none of them are), but it doesn't have the overwhelming impact of the best. At times the tempo is too slow, at others, too fast. The real problem, though, is the recording. Despite all the SACD hoopla I have yet to hear any SACD that is as good as the best stereo CD (same for DVD-A). The sound is confined with little warmth. Balances are wrong: the timpani sounds like it's in another room, but you hear every thing the bassoons are doing. Even the contrabassoon player who can't sustain notes long enough. The CD deserves only 3 stars, but I give it four for the composer! After all these years, Mehta on Decca is still the one to beat, both musically and sonically, with Welser-Most, Jarvi, Rajter, Sieghart not too far behind. Moralt still awaits CD release.
If the record execs don't do something soon to improve the sound of SACD I'm afraid it will go the way of Quad.
