This album offers 12 enlightening cover versions of Western pop tunes, as performed by artists from places like France, Spain, South Africa, Germany, and Mali. It's always instructive to glimpse how one culture's music is perceived by another, whether through a funhouse mirror, from under a microscope, or even face-to-face. The performances gathered here range from misguided (Albert Pla's bizarre Spanish language take on Lou Reed's "Take A Walk On The Wild Side") to hilarious (Fatal Mambo's salsa interpretation of Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime") to a delightful breath of fresh air (Malian girl group Les Go's version of Hall & Oates' "I Can¹t Go For That"). Nenes' earnest Japanese-language rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" is laced with plangent plucked samisens and is somehow extremely touching. Other attempts are less effective, but at least none of them come across as cynical and all are worth a listen. --Christina Roden

This is a must have for world music lovers, especially those who have American or British favorites they love to hear in new ways. This is one of my favorite world music CD's and probably the one I listen to the most.

This CD is unlike any other. One culture takes on another's idea of a popular hit, and reinterprets it through their own set of cultural lenses. The result is utterly fascinating. It is a fun listen...but also a study of people, of music, of psychology, of music, of intercultural interaction. Don't miss this one!

The Best of Both Worlds.......2006-11-14

I don't know, maybe it's just because I cut my teeth on world music three and a half years ago with this CD and Putumayo's "Global Soul", which came out at about the same time. I love both of them. "Cover the World" takes a very fresh look at some standards that you may already be familiar with.

As mentioned elsewhere, the two songs by Ladysmith Black Mambazo - "People Get Ready", with Phoebe Snow (originally done by The Impressions), and "Ain't No Sunshine" with Des'ree (originally by Bill Withers) - are alone worth the price of the CD. I played "People Get Ready" over and over when I first got the CD, and still haven't tired of it. Angelique Kidjo puts her own unique spin on the Jimi Hendrix standard "Voodoo Child", as do Les Go ("The Girls") on "I Can't Go For That", originally performed by Hall and Oates. Chris Ardoin and his group Double Clutchin' may give you a new appreciation for zydeco with their rendition of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" (originally done by Jackie Wilson), and may even motivate you to check out his brother, Sean Ardoin & Zydekool, as well. Finally, Tukuleur, two brothers from Senegal whose music I cannot locate in the United States with the exception of the one song on this CD, make the song "Afrika (Africa)" (originally by Toto, whom I don't remember) their very own. There are no bad songs on the CD, but those are the best of the lot.

"Cover the World" and "Global Soul" almost single-handedly provided me with the bridge I needed to the wonderful, amazing universe of world music, and they may just do the same for you.

Gets old PDQ!.......2006-07-21

I used to work at a store in the mall, that often circulated several putumayo titles on our sound system which we also sold. We had Cuba, Samba Bossa Nova, Asian Groove, Arabic Groove, Zydeco, World Lounge, African Groove, Euro Lounge, Global Soul, just to name a few! I loved them all, even after listening to them every time I worked for almost a year...except one! Cover the world, drove me up the wall the first few times I heard it. Now, there are a few good songs on here ("Ain't no sunshine", is my fav) but overall, not for long term listening in my opinion. Hearing Asian women sing "No woman no cry" gets flat out annoying after awhile! Would recommend the titles I stated above, over this one.

Fun--but not one of Putomayo's most stellar works....mm.......2006-03-02

Most of the Putomayo I own are CDs I can play over and over. "Cover the World" was interesting the first time around, but I doubt I will be revisiting the collection as often as I do "Celtic Tides" or any of the others with more original works.

Standouts are Kidjo's "Voodoo Child," and the 2 selections by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

This live 80's performance of Verdi's least popular opera is a great modern version with plenty of good things and bad things, though mostly good things. Ricardo Muti conducts the score with fresh, powerful musicianship and lyric richness, subtlety and detail. He understood Italian opera quite well and it's too bad he is not regarded in the same ranks as Carlo Maria Giulini, Giuseppe Sinopoli or Claudo Abbado, the leading Italian opera conductors. Muti cast a rather odd bunch of singers. Cheryl Studer is primarily a German lyric soprano who nevertheless sang numerous dramatic roles, including Wagner. For the role of Elena, she changes her voice so that it comes off as Italian lyrico-spinto. She hits high notes easily and beautifully and reaches downward for great lower notes as well. It is a human, dramatic account and arguably the best. Tenor Chris Merrit is not wholly suited for the tenor role of Arrigo because at times he falters vocal-wise. The tessitura of the role taxes him considerably but he does cope with the music quite well. For me, there is not enough Italian or even Verdian fire in his performance. He has a beautiful lyric voice, full of elegance and bravado but he lacks the je ne sai quais that say Placido Domingo or Nicolai Gedda would have given to the role. Because Domingo and Gedda have sung the role quite well, Merrit is really a lesser light next to them. But he is still doing a good job nonetheless. I'm just being picky I guess. Giorgio Zancanaro's lovely baritone voice is tailor-made for the role of Monforte and he gets into the character's nasty mind set quite well. Zancanaro is delivering a splendid performance as always and it is unfortunate he was underrated singer. Because this is a live La Scala performance, there is an enthusiastic audience and a vitality to the performance you cannot find in a glossy studio recording. And even as such, a lot of operaphiles, including myself, prefer the RCA studio recording made in the late 70's starring Placido Domingo, Martina Arroyo, Sherill Milnes, Ruggero Raimondi and James Morris. But this recording is another fine set and has its own merit.

Nancianne Parrella is Associate Organist of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where she is featured frequently on the highly acclaimed Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series, playing and recording the Duruflé Requiem and giving the New York premiere of Stephan Paulus' Concerto for Organ, Orchestra and Choir. When it comes to song writing, Ernest Chausson has long stood in the shadows of Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, and Ravel, but his gentle and self-effacing songs go so much further than the merely charming. To have the complete collection gathered on disc is a treat, and with artists like these, the performances are about as good as you could expect this side of the pearly gates. Ann Murray and Felicity Lott need no introduction for their celestial singing of this repertoire. The American baritone Chris Pedro Trakas is less well-known, but he comes with a clutch of top prizes and, more to the point, a beautifully sensitive voice, which he uses to great effect here.

Underpinning everything is accompanist Graham Johnson, whose playing is always just so right, whatever area of the song repertoire he takes on, and who provides (uncredited) a must-read essay on Chausson that really engages with the music. Soprano Geraldine McGreevy is a welcome addition in two duets, as is the Chilingirian Quartet, accompanying Ann Murray in the final number, "Chanson perpétuelle." If a reason for a reassessment of Chausson's role as a writer of mélodie is needed, this marvelous set is overwhelmingly it. --Keith Clarke

Truly a great recording - sung by outstanding artists, especially Felicity Lott, and accompanied by Graham Johnson in his best form..... The music is truly glorious and the recording is a revelation with many beautiful nuances. A total joy!!!

Fascinating rep, rancid singing.......2003-06-10

I picked this CD up because I love the melodie in general and Chausson in particular. What a pity that the performances can't hold a candle to the composer's inspiration. Felicity Lott is her usual shrill self, Ann Murray is even more wobbly and out-of-line than usual, Chris Trakas has no lower range and a pinched top, and Geraldine McGreevy sings as if she had a beautiful voice, which she most emphatically does not. All of these artists are woefully out of tune, which sits particularly unpleasantly on the ear in the chromatic universe of Chausson. As for Graham Johnson, the less said the better. There are those who think he is a fine accompanist and pianist. Fine. Let them think so. They must be deaf or have short memories. If one wants to hear great performances of French rep, turn to young Souzay, with Jacqueline Bonneau on a deleted Decca CD. This is rarified music, but these people have not the technique to do it justice.

Album Description

Although these composers didn't quite reach the heights of Robert Schumann or Franz Schubert, there is certainly no lack of beauty in the songs found here. Composers such as Sibelius and Tchaikovsky are more often than not, recognised as masters of larger scale works. This collection of songs exposes their smaller masterpieces while at the same time demonstrates the art of the French masters; Fauré, and Duparc. A touch of spice is added by the exotic Zarzuela composers Pablo Luna, Sorozobál, Yradier as well as two songs written by Edith Piaf.
