5 out of 5 stars From the review in Fanfare.......2006-08-01

Here is a nice collection of Schubert overtures, performed with warm Italian cordiality by an orchestra & conductor who are given no identification beyond their names. Is the ORT Orchestra della Toscana located in Florence or somewhere else in Tuscany? And where did Maestro Renzetti learn his stick-technique? It is a good one, & Schubert's music blooms under it.

Besides the two familiar "Overtures in the Italian Style" (only the second, in C major, really qualifies for that claim; both are essentially Schubert, pure & simple), there is the rare overture to an obscure comedy called "Der Teufel als Hydraulicus," & the neglected Overture in B flat, which is believed to have formed part of a birthday cantata. From the vast treasure-trove of Schubert's operas, which is only now beginning to be explored, come the curtain-raisers to "Die Freunde von Salamanca," the one-acter "Die Zwillingsbrueder," & the last two big Romantic operas.

Renzetti makes all these pieces sing. The recorded sound is as light & airy as the performances.

Schubert's ninth opera (or rather, singspiel--in which music is interspersed with spoken dialog) will be most attractive to fans of Schubert's other, equally unsuccessful stage works, such as Rosamunde. The libretto, a comedy in which a pair of twins complicate the lives of other simple country types, is set to distinctly noncomedic music; Schubert's charming melodies, no matter how lovely, in no way reflect what is happening on the stage. The spoken German dialogue occupies nearly 20 minutes of this 55-minute CD, which may put off many potential listeners. The "live" performance is strong vocally, but rather fuzzy orchestrally. It is not helped by noticeably dull sonics. For some reason, the liner notes and jewel box both misidentify the work as D. 190 (D. is for Deutsch's catalog of Schubert's compositions). The correct attribution is D. 647. --Paul Turok

A disc of operatic arias by Schubert? Did Schubert write great operas? No. Only an academic or devout enthusiast would want to sit through them. But did he write great opera arias? Occasionally. After all, the odd one proved a starting point for what would subsequently turn into a song. And this anthology includes a number from Alfonso und Estrella, which was later fed into Winterreise's "Tauschung." Many of the better arias are for baritone, reflecting Schubert's friendship with the singer Johann Michael Vogl, so there was plenty of scope for the baritone here, Oliver Widmer, to select rewarding items. Steering clear of the comparatively well-known Fierrabras and Die Verschworenen, Vogl has preferred to give a platform to the early operas Teufels Lustschloss and Die Freunde von Salamaka, and to fragments like Die Burgschaft and Adrast. The singing is attractive--agile, light, and sympathetically responsive--and the playing more accomplished than one might expect. It makes a welcome tag-on to Hyperion's Schubert Lieder series. The booklet comes with encyclopedic notes. --Michael White

            5 out of 5 stars Schubert Masterpieces.......2005-10-01

This fine recording is conducted by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, a British citizen but born in India or the Middle East, kind of like Zubin Mehta, who conducts with bravura and romantic neoclassical harmony which is typical of Schubert's music, which was composed at the same time as Beethoven. His music is more Romantic in structure than classical, but he certainly grew up learning classical technique and employs the allegro-adagio-allegro form. His last symphony, the 8th Symphony, was unfinished for unknown reasons. He may have been ill, though he was not close to death yet. His death was from syphillis around the 1820's, around the same time as Beethoven's death. This symphony opens the CD and sounds magnificent. It's grandiose, danceable and dark and brooding Die Zwillingsbrüder, a singspiel, is a rare work of Schubert that nobody but the most avid fans of Schubert knows about. It was an opera that mirrored the popular Singspiel of the time- text spoken and mixed with singing, like the latter operettas of Johann Strauss, usually budget productions with simple themes and easy music. Alfonso And Estrella is a more grandiose opera, with passionate love as its theme and with brilliant music and melodic singing. This particular opera is still performed in Europe, though it has no permanent place in American theater repertoires. The rest of the CD contains his Overtures for Orchestra in D and C Major dubbed "in the Italian style". This even foreshadows Mendelsshon's Italian Symphony. It is jocund and spirited music with accented beats and compelling orchestral fortissimi and pianissimi, resembling an overture to an opera, but being simply a concert overture, which would be more of a musical style further ahead in the 19th century. The CD concludes with his last symphony, the 9th (interesting, the 9th was his last like Beethoven's 9th was his last) called the "Great" in C Major. It makes use of a larger-scale orchestra and has thunder-like fortissimos and bouncy scherzos and divine adagios. It is more like a mix of Beethoven and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. It is his uniquely his own, of course and his best work. The Menuhin Festival Orchestra does a fine job with this music and sounds great on your stereo. Add this to your collection.
