A "Must Have" for any Schubert enthusiast.......2005-11-17
As soon as I had an income I bought my own copy (sorry, it was before I discovered Amazon) and am currently in the process of "loving it to death" and will soon be needing to buy another one. I studied for my high school diploma with this music playing in the background. I also studied for my medical finals with the same recording playing. Currently I drive to and from work with it playing, quite regularly.
It's hard to put my finger on exactly what makes this probably my life-long favorite piece of music. All I can say is that it represents Schubert's music at its absolute pinnacle. The first time I heard it, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. It is just so perfect. OK, so the story is lame and the action is slow-moving (and hundreds of other operas aren't?) but you don't notice because you get so caught up in the sublime music. Imagine a couple dozen of Schubert's most melodious and singable Lieder strung together and accompanied by full orchestra, and you start to get the idea.
Add to this the all-star cast (all the voices I grew up loving to hear, such as Fischer-Dieskau, Schreier, Prey and Mathis) and you have a winner.
If you are a Schubert nut like me, buy it! BUY IT NOW!! You will not be disappointed.

From the review in Fanfare.......2006-08-01
Besides the two familiar "Overtures in the Italian Style" (only the second, in C major, really qualifies for that claim; both are essentially Schubert, pure & simple), there is the rare overture to an obscure comedy called "Der Teufel als Hydraulicus," & the neglected Overture in B flat, which is believed to have formed part of a birthday cantata. From the vast treasure-trove of Schubert's operas, which is only now beginning to be explored, come the curtain-raisers to "Die Freunde von Salamanca," the one-acter "Die Zwillingsbrueder," & the last two big Romantic operas.
Renzetti makes all these pieces sing. The recorded sound is as light & airy as the performances.

Arias by the Masters sung by a Master.......2006-02-24
A Grand and Humorous Outing with Thomas Hampson.......2005-10-26
Though equally at home in all languages on the concert and operatic stage, Hampson's affinity for the German language reflects his living there for so many years. Two arias by Beethoven - `Mit Mädeln sich vertragen' and `Prüfung des Küssens' - are miniatures in style and vocal acting. In two arias (alternative versions) from 'Cosi Fan Tutte' he rolls his Italian sound with his consonants, making each version of the aria a prize. But for this listener the glory of the recital is the rarely heard 'Sei mir gegrüßt, O Sonne' from Schubert's 'Alfonso und Estrella' - ardently sung and vocally resplendent.
The important presence of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus cannot be emphasized enough. This is period music playing at its finest. The balance between Hampson and Harnoncourt goes far beyond studio technicalities: these two fine artists understand their united mission and produce a unity of vision that defies comparison! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

A disc of operatic arias by Schubert? Did Schubert write great operas? No. Only an academic or devout enthusiast would want to sit through them. But did he write great opera arias? Occasionally. After all, the odd one proved a starting point for what would subsequently turn into a song. And this anthology includes a number from Alfonso und Estrella, which was later fed into Winterreise's "Tauschung." Many of the better arias are for baritone, reflecting Schubert's friendship with the singer Johann Michael Vogl, so there was plenty of scope for the baritone here, Oliver Widmer, to select rewarding items. Steering clear of the comparatively well-known Fierrabras and Die Verschworenen, Vogl has preferred to give a platform to the early operas Teufels Lustschloss and Die Freunde von Salamaka, and to fragments like Die Burgschaft and Adrast. The singing is attractive--agile, light, and sympathetically responsive--and the playing more accomplished than one might expect. It makes a welcome tag-on to Hyperion's Schubert Lieder series. The booklet comes with encyclopedic notes. --Michael White
