5 out of 5 stars Roman Trekel - unique, yet eerie similarity to Thomas Quasthoff.......2007-04-28

Listening to the extremely gifted baritone Roman Trekel, I suddenly realized that his instrument is similar to that of the wonderful Thomas Quasthoff. Although each has his own unique style, it is the voice itself that sounds as if they could be brothers! And like Thomas Quasthoff, Roman Trekel's baritone is rich and smooth, with deep emotive power, and graced by perfect enunciation.

These Carl Loewe (1796-1869) ballads are wonderful, full of strange and fantastic stories, based on very imaginative poetry, including several poems by Lord Byron. Roman Trekel is superbly expressive in bringing out the drama in the ballads, and his voice is richly handsome.

Included is a booklet with lyrics in both German and English, and interesting background notes on each song. This disc is part of a 20-volume series, Carl Loewe: Lieder & Balladen, which, unfortunately, seems to be out of print. If it is ever reissued, I hope the lyrics in both languages are included, as it would be a shame to miss out on the stories involved in these ballads.

I highly recommend this album, and also recommend seeking out more songs by Carl Loewe, as well as other albums by Roman Trekel.

5 out of 5 stars Roman Trekel sings Carl Loewe ballads.......2007-05-09

German baritone Roman Trekel has a wonderfully expressive and warm voice. He can convey any range of emotions, and he is a natural story-teller. His rendering of these dramatic ballads and songs of Carl Loewe is thrilling and moving. Roman Trekel studied with the master of lieder singing, Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau, but it is Mr. Trekel's own unique style that will capture the listener.

Eight of the ten works here are extensive narrative works (narrative in the sense of a story or epic being sung). "Dark Eyes" is a melodrama with a waltz melody, about a nobleman obsessed with a woman with dark eyes (who does not even seem aware that he exists). He ends up being challenged by the woman's husband while serenading her outside her bedroom window, kills her husband, and then is himself killed by her father.

"The Bachelor," one of two short works in the collection, is a pleasant and catchy song about an elusive bachelor who eventually learns the bitter truth about ending up alone.

Carl Loewe himself often enjoyed singing "Great-grandfather's Visitors." From a collection of poems called Village Tales, it is beautifully lyric, combining the sad reality and sprite-filled dreamworld of a lonely old man. It is touching and has a satisfying ending about the old man's "reawakened dormant heart."

"The Imprisoned Admiral" is believed to be based on the Iron Mask, the enigmatic captive from the times of Louis XIV. In the midst of his present misery and imprisonment, the old admiral reflects on his exciting youthful fighting days at sea. It is one of Loewe's greatest ballads.

"The Count of Habsbug, based on Friedrich Schiller's large-scale ballad, is about King Rudolf, the first freely-elected king of the Holy Roman Empire, in the 13th century. It is full of images and details about an event in the king's life.

"The Rare Prayer" is based on an actual historical figure in the 18th century, a prince nicknamed "the Old Mustache." It is a touching ballad about the old warrior, who is not used to praying, who pleads with God unsuccessfully for the life of his daughter, and who bitterly reflects at the end, "If God had come to me, I would not have acted so harshly."

"The Corpse at St. Just" actually refers to the Emperor Charles V (1519-1556). The ballad, which has a spiritual and contemplative sound, emphasizes the contrast between the Emperor's former glory and his simple funeral rites as a monk.

"The Cradlesong at Gent" is another ballad about Emperor Charles V, and tells of the future emperor's birth in the Spanish Netherlands in 1500. It has a fairy-tale quality, where regal guests present their often whimsical gifts and corresponding wishes for the newborn: a golden sword covered in a sash of silk -- be strong but mild; two celestial globes presented by an astronomer -- look up to the light and you too will find a place among the stars; a single cherry stone in a big bowl -- you too have a great future in the bud, they tell the infant.

"The Beggar" was originally planned by the poet Goethe as an opera libretto, based on a story from Boccacio's Decameron and a ballad by an Irish bishop. Goethe never created the libretto, but at least this ballad remains. It is dramatic, yet a thoroughly pleasant-sounding work. A beggar is called into a castle by some children to tell them a story, and his narrative ends up in a dramatic finale. There are some striking images, such as the children calling out to the beggar, "we are alone, mother is praying and father is out hunting wolves."

If you are a fan of Thomas Quasthoff, another great baritone, you will definitely enjoy Roman Trekel. This album is one of twenty in the Carl Loewe Lieder & Balladen collection, all accompanied by the very fine pianist Cord Garben. The entire series is excellent, and I especially recommend the two albums in the series by Roman Trekel, Volume 3 (this album) and Volume 16. Included is a booklet with the lyrics in German and English, and excellent backround notes.

German composer Carl Loewe was an exact contemporary of Schubert, and in German-speaking countries he is regarded as a songwriter of almost equal ability. If his songs have not traveled outside of German-speaking countries, it's undoubtedly because he composed relatively few non-vocal pieces (chamber and orchestral music)--pieces which would have acted as a vanguard for the songs and choral works. He specialized in ballads--narrative songs in many stanzas that tell a story--and his resources in devising atmospheric accompaniments and setting moods were virtually limitless. The performances in this series are expert, and will be eagerly welcomed by Lieder fans. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Discover Loewe with the dependable, vibrant Andreas Schmidt.......2004-11-22

CPO deserve continuous accolades for their 19 CD series of the Lieder and Ballades of Carl Loewe. Loewe's works have languished in undeserved obscurity for decades.

This volume is a great one to start with if you have yet to sample the series. The reliable baritone Andreas Schmidt is the singer in all 13 selections, and there is a good mixture of tradition Lied settings and some longer Ballades too. Schmidt handles the mood changes in the Ballades very adroitly. Cord Garben is a very fine accompaniest that I hope to hear more from.

The recorded sound is very good. The balances take a little getting used to, with the singer set farther off to the left side and the piano more recessed than is typical in other Lied recordings. But the effect is welcome, especially in the quiet portions of the Ballades, where the piano would have a tendency to drown out the voice if it were placed closer. Good choice by CPO.

The booklet brings a one star ding, as will be the case for all of the series if I get around to reviewing the other 18 CDs. The translations are sometimes quite awful, as has been pointed out by professional reviewers in magazines and on other websites. With this volume, there are several spots where the texts switch sides. For one song, English is on the left, then the next song on the same page, the English is on the right.

But don't that stop you from digging into this deep treasury of song.

          5 out of 5 stars A very good first CD of a long-waited series........1999-11-29

Apart from Hyperion's famous Schubert complete lieder edition, this CPO's Loewe complete lieder seems to be overlooked. But as a songs fan, this great project makes me more excited. Another devoted accompanist. We indeed have too few CD of Loewe's songs. As this CD shows, Loewe is a great ballade writer. There're 10 ballades here (some are very rare in the repertoire),ranges from eerie "Die drei Lieder" to sweet "Tom der Reimer". Schmidt gives us a fluent performence. His interpretion about these songs are faithful and convincible. Garben's accompaniment is with sparkle. And hail to Garben! Anyone who takes the project is definitely with great valor. A very good first CD of a long-waited series, and a must for any song fan.

5 out of 5 stars desert island disc.......2002-08-29

Hans Hotter is a wonder. The voice has a remarkable agility and breadth of expression, that has justly earned him the admiration of several generations. He is an expert at chiaroscuro, sometimes lightening the tone, as in Ständchen, while in Loewe's "Edward", he adopts a minatory timbr that is chilling. It is well known that Hotter was THE Wotan of the post-war years, but he is not inferior to any lieder singer. These songs are mini-dramas in his expert hands. Testament is quite generous with these re-issues of classic singers, packing 27 songs onto this disc. It is a recording worth having.

          5 out of 5 stars A great Hotter anthology.......2002-06-19

This compilation comes from 1966 and 1968, when the experienced Hotter had a high level of refinement. Very few people have been so succesful in fusing elements of both singer and actor into one entity as Hotter could. This CD is more proof of that. To a newcomer, his voice will sound quite dark and rich, but has vibrance. His characterizations are intense, but not exaggerated. And amazingly, both these elements are completely integrated. The works represented here need no introduction - if any of them cannot convince with Hotter singing, there is little alternative. To compare Hotter with Fischer-Dieskau is neither simple nor right, it is really up to one's taste. Yet the CD is also good for someone new to lieder. The recording quality is exceptional, even for the mono selections (about half the disc).
