Amazon.com essential recording

Classical music people, critics in particular, have a reputation for being grumpy, and this disc illustrates why. It's called Martha Argerich Debut Recital. Now, what does this tell you about it? Nothing, that's what. And the title isn't even correct! Actually, there's more material here than appeared on her debut recital, not the least of which is a stunning Liszt Sonata in B minor, which is the major work on the disc. When one of the two or three greatest living pianists turns in a performance of a major work like the Liszt Sonata that has been generally acclaimed, you would think that her record company would somehow get that piece of news into the title of the recording. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Martha shows up.......2007-07-22

If you are a piano afficionado, especially solo piano, you're gonna wanna hear Martha play.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Absolutely stunning!.......2007-01-16

I just bought this disc and was blown away by it. It was everything I thought it would be and then some. It has to be one of the great piano recital CDs of all time. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this.

5 out of 5 stars Undeniably Argerich.......2006-11-08

Any one interested in knowing how piano should be played and can be played should get this CD. When I first heard the CD, I was surprised already by her debut recital Argerich has mastered such a distinctive style. I must disagree with the reviewer below who describe this as not imaginative, for nothing could be further from the truth. Argerich's playing is clearly her own, and no one else's. If one wants to hear a technically perfect but emotionally empty playing of Chopin, many of the newer artists would happily fill that bill. And for the record, Horowitz can make plenty of mistakes too, but that doesn't take the charm away from listening to his playing.
That being said, this is one of the most turbulent, drenching rendition of Chopin there is. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars You have to listen to this Lizst sonata.......2006-07-05

Before this performance I thought that I did not like the sonata because no other pianist could keep its many parts and segments together from the beginning to the end. This is the only performance that does that for me. When I listened to it for the first time, I broke up in tears. Argerich's interpretation is mezmerizing. Buy it! Any serious music collector should have this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Amazing..........2006-06-16

I've never paid attention to the Liszt Sonata until I heard this recording. I canNOT BELIEVE some people are calling her without soul or "muddy"... This is the single most inspiring and shocking CD. Really gives you chills when you listen to it. Makes your heart beat faster.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive "Pictures at an Exhibition".......2007-04-30

Not much more I can add to this. If you have any interest in the original piano version of "Pictures" at all then this is the one to get. Try Muti's for an excellent version of the piece as orchestrated by Ravel(Along with a great "Rite of Spring"; dirt cheap too)- Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibiton; Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring.

Nobody else understands "Pictures" as well as Richter and in his hands time melts and you are taken on a journey you will not soon forget. Richter pushes and pulls this piece wherever he wants and we the listeners are happy to follow him where he chooses to take us.

The piano sound is quite good for its time. Fairly full and with a good dynamic range. Unfortunately the audience seems to have a case of infectious coughing. Similar to the live Wartime recordings of Furtwangler in that respect. You get used to it though, and either way it doesn't matter in the hands of a performance of this stature.

There's a reason that you can still buy this nearly 50(?!) years after it was recorded. Not only are people still talking about this recital, but we are still waiting for a recording to match it in modern sound without audience interruptions. I suspect we may have to wait a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars terrible coughs........2006-11-16

there are two recordings that would've perhaps been much more appreciated had there not been several people who coughed their way through the entire concert. the furtwangler 1942 recording of Beethoven's sixth symphony and this one.
jesus. i'm not one to complain about coughing, but we have issues here. was it communism?? really, were russians this worse off???????

things set aside, the performance itself.. is magical.

i can't add much more to previous reviewers except this: expect one of the worst recordings from the 1950's... if you brainwash yourself into believing this is one of those naxos or pearl remastered 1920s recordings, you'll find yourself much more pleased.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Memorialand Quoted Piano Recital from the 1950's .......2005-12-15

Svaitoslav Richter is the quintiessential pianist of the 20th century. This epic live recording of the Mussorsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" stands as the supreme recording of the piano version ever recorded. Although some will argue that Horowitz recorded of his this piece with is its numerous interpretative changes is also notable but is mearly a flashey more superficial rendition than Richter's. Richter here captures this pieces mistical and heavenly appeal so perfectly it seems its nuances are forever engrained in your mind. The Promenade is so stately and energetically expressed it seemingly gives us permission to enter a heavenly 30 minute musical forum. The variation number 5, 8, 10 and the next to last are my favorites. Being a pianist (and I use that term loosely) this recording has taught me so much with regards to vivid imagery. For example the next to last variation leaves me with the impression that it is someone taking the road to heaven and finally arrives at its gates. Then is looking at the Gates of Heaven as they Open. A grand moment in any life. Richters imagery is so perfectly unbalanced that he leaves us on edge to anticipate each colorful moment. This is truely my favorite recording in classical piano because it is so awe inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars The best interpretation of "Pictures at an Exhibition" I have heard.......2005-11-17

Wow.

If the vivid imagery Richter creates in this live performance isn't enough to bring tears to your eyes, the technical prowess will certainly send you searching for the "repeat" button on your cd player.

Richter, as always, delivers an emotional and monumental performance.

3 out of 5 stars Great but the worst recording i hear.......2005-10-01

fisrt of all excuse me for my bad englih, i m french ;o)
A concert recording can't be perfect, this is the worst i hear. All the people are ill and the record man was probably far as 50m of the piano behind a door.
So, Why three stars ?
because i love this music and nobody play it as Richter this day.
Great music, Great moment...

    5 out of 5 stars Dreamy.......2007-01-01

I've had the recording for a while and I saw her live too. The recording is a nice interpretation of Bach because of the speed of the pieces. I met her after I saw her live in '05 and she is a total doll. Buy it even if you don't like classical cuz it will change your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable young artist.......2006-07-05

This CD is a stunning debut recording by one of the most gifted young guitarists to appear in some time. Her technical abilities are of the highest level. Anyone that can play the Prelude to the 4th Lute Suite this briskly AND musically is above most criticism. And I have been playing the 4th Lute Suite for thirty years myself.

Now, of course Ana Vidovic has lots of room to grow aesthetically--how could it not be so, as she made this recording before she was twenty years old? For example, the Sonata Romantica suffers a bit from excess impetus. She almost never lets the music breath and in this music, hommage to Schubert as it is, expansiveness is inherent to the style. But let us also praise her choice of repertoire. She has unerringly chosen very fine pieces from the repertoire, which is not always the case. Her Walton Bagatelles are remarkable, showing a panache that we are used to hearing only from Julian Bream, for whom they were written.

One thing that Ana Vidovic has in spades is a real ear for harmonic progression--this is one of the many things that sets this recording apart from many others by those with velocity and fingers and little else.

So, my advice is to purchase this recording. I doubt very much that you will regret it and you will be hearing a lot more from this artist over the years.

2 out of 5 stars Stunning technique, needs much work.......2006-06-25

This performer deserves all the latitude necessary, as she may yet develop into a relevant, insightful, and original interpreter of the music she offers. I truly hope she does not choose to compete with Eliot Fisk in the Indy-500 or the 24-Hours of Le Mans. Based on the samples, I won't be buying this CD as I can program my computer to play just as fast or even faster, and just as clear. Instead, I recommend the Frank Bungarten recording (also available on Amazon). But Ana Vidovic does show a lot of promise, and deserves encouragement.

5 out of 5 stars Best version of the Prelude BWV 1006 for Guitar.......2006-05-21

For anyone following ALL previous versions of Bach's Fourth Lute Suite (Williams, Barrueco, Galbraith, Russell, and a long etc) Vidovic deserves a place of her own. Her playing is superb: it has energy, character, precision and strength enough to deceive anybody ignoring she was barely 19 at the time of the recording. If you do not have this CD buy it now. Bear in mind it is not Sony, or BMG with their outstanding sound engineers, but Vidovic makes up for all that absence. She is part of a new generation of croatian world class virtuosi and in my opinion, a clear step forward in Classical Guitar Playing.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-04-09

I just got this recording after seeing her live. Ana Vidovic is amazing. Probably one of my favorite players.

    5 out of 5 stars Van Damn.......2004-07-20

This man has the great influence of Art Tatum and the lines of the best of the best bop players. This recording is really major. You can feel Mr. Jones as he uses colors from the whole pallette of jazz ( especially stride which is my favourite). He even has a senior moment when he goes to the lowered nine instead of the tonic to end one of the tunes. But that just shows how real Hank Jones is. He's in his eighties and still sounds better than all the young cats right now.

4 out of 5 stars classic jazz piano.......2002-02-07

mr. jones is one of the most elegant stylists to ever take to the piano bench. he plays with fluid grace that swings gently, revealing the soul of the music presented. here, in a solo context, mr. jones truly shines. there is no distraction from sidemen or other soloists, just the straight ahead playing of mr. jones. he carries us through a set of standards with charm, inventiveness, and a style that evokes ellington but at the same time is informed by bop masters like monk, powell, or herbie nichols. this is a great jazz cd for a quiet evening by candlelight. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Hank Jones.......1999-10-05

Solo piano and Hank Jones-Need I say more?. Jones's playing is without pretence and true to the essence of musicianship. Listen to his wonderful voicings layered with his trade mark bop runs. My favourite is his solo on Toots Thielemann's waltz "Bluesette". A fantastic album.

2 out of 5 stars The Downside of Yundi Li's Pianism.......2007-07-19

'(T)his Recital Confirmed that He Belongs with the New Pianistic Superstars' - wrote American Record Guide.
I wonder where from this guy formulates this view if this CD is the very item under review.
For long, I have been very wary of Yundi Li's artistic progress after his being hyped by the commercial media right after his Warsaw win in Y2K.
This CD probably presents him at his weakest - and if you just know but a little bit of piano playing, you will see what I mean.
The opening pieces expose Li's interpretive limit almost to the full. The pieces are nowhere pyrotechnical show pieces, and it is exactly in such places that expose the pianist's artistry. Ths Scarlatti sonatas and the Mozart K330 all played in transparent delicacy, but wholly without soul and feeling. Nuances, if any, are teeny and lack any emotional depth.
The supposedly affectionate Schumann pieces suffer the same plight.
Any musical student will be able to answer you if asked what matters primarily in good music making - feeling.
Granted, Li began learning pianoforte quite late - after 8. As of now, his technique is almost flawless. A big word of caution, though - he should not take it that by merely employing his technique in demanding pieces, it will be able to improve his artistry. Rather, he should allow himself more opportunities to be nurtured in all different branches of Western classical music - including vocal music and operas, in order to gain the dire needed musical maturity.
It would take quite some time before this promising keyboard athlete would really mature musically.
You may pass this item with no regret.

5 out of 5 stars Mark my words...........2007-06-08

...this man is going to ultimately take his place in the pantheon of the very greatest piano artists -- Rubenstein, Richter and their few peers. He already has distinguished himself among concert reviewers as the antidote to the shallow showmanship of, for example, Lang Lang. Li's astonishing technique is in the service of a profound musicianship that galvanized me upon first hearing this recording's Scarlatti on the radio. Every single work on the CD is performed as beautifully and powerfully as I've ever heard it in decades of attentive listening. I am very excited about this young musician.

4 out of 5 stars A very young talent in progress! .......2007-04-02

Yundi Li really promises to become one of the most prominent colorists of this new century. Its sound is not precisely expressive but suggestive. In this sense he would be regarded a player whose style possesses something of the incorporeal vitality of Gieseking, the introspection of Radu Lupu and the phrasing of Guiomar Novaes. His next recordings on Debussy and Ravel must be first order performances.

Personally I think his Mozart must be polished and matured (because Mozart is not Haydn), his Scarlatti is plenty of admirable sharpness and wondrous vitality; his Schumann is hovered by that enigmatic atmosphere that embosses and enriches the Romantic mood of this well known Op. And his Liszt possesses that flaming elegance with abrupt concessions of virtuous splendor. Somehow he reminds me to the young Brendel in the late fifties

The Italians have a fortunate expression: Augury. So, don't forget him, because he will be one of the masters in the next years to come. .

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Performance.......2007-03-23

I have heard this pianist in a live performance and his recordings are better. This one(and I have them all) is particularly good. Not as good as Lang Lang but close.

4 out of 5 stars Competent but not Enlightened.......2007-02-12

Little more needs to be said than has been said by the many other reviewers. I came to the CD enthralled with Yundi Li through his recordings of Chopin and Liszt. I was especially eager to hear what he would do with Schumann's Carnaval.

I was a bit disappointed. I believe there is more to this music than Yundi Li mines. His Scarlatti and Mozart are also well played but not memorable. There is much more that could have been communicated with the Mozart that Yundi Li did not find.

The title "Vienna Recital" led me to believe that this was a live recording of a recital given in Vienna, but there is no applause and no indication of this being a live performance. I was a little surprised by that.

Taken together, I was pleased to see that Yundi Li is branching out beyond his limited repertoire of Chopin and Liszt, but he has yet to bring to his new repertoire what he has so admirably accomplished with his earlier choices.

5 out of 5 stars Marian McPartland is a Musical Treasure.......2007-02-20

This recording is a tour de force of solo piano playing. I often play Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson, and Dave Brubeck, and Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea, and so on down the list of great jazz pianists. Marian McPartland is not only right in there with these ebony tapping cats, she's up at the ivory top. There is a reason why Dave Brubeck called her one of the top three pianists of the 20th century, maybe like me he has never heard such swinging sonic beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Inventive arrangements, brilliant technique.......2005-10-18

All of the pieces on this CD are available as note-for-note piano transcriptions, which I'm working through. Listening to McPartland play when you're familiar with the transcripts gives a fresh appreciation for her incredible technique and innovative arrangements. My favorite is her take on Ornette Coleman's "Turn Around," in which she magically turns a solo piano into an entire jazz trio.

5 out of 5 stars Marian at her best.......2005-08-18

I love Marian McPartland ! This is my favorite McPartland CD. Interesting chord progressions and sensitive interpretations abound. I have listened to this CD over and over. It is still in my CD changer.

5 out of 5 stars Marian Seems Happy.......2005-03-28

I think that Marian McPartland's music is usually full of joy, but never so much to me as on this album. This is not to say that she can't be solemn, as on a piece such as Willow Weep For Me, but when she plays such a piece, she sounds as if she is really enjoying what she's doing. And on the happier pieces, such as Love You Madly and It's You Or No One, she absolutely bubbles. Whether or not you agree with my joyful hypothesis, you will find a wide variety of songs to enjoy in this collection. McPartland's style sparkles throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Marian McPartland is an amazing pianist.......2004-11-18

This is a beautiful CD. Only a pianist with Marian McPartland's experience of jazz piano styles and delicate ear could produce an album this divine. Marian is able to draw on such a wide variety of harmonic styles that she can make everyday tunes like My Funny Valentine and Willow Weep for Me sound like you're hearing them for the first time. Also, the recording quality of this live performance is excellent. A great CD that I have listened to over and over again.

    5 out of 5 stars What a pianist/musician!.......2002-03-24

There is no need to say that Dick Hyman is an impeccable pre-bop piano player. His technique is flawless, his sense of voicing and arranging within a tune is masterful. He is widely respected among other jazz musicians, and rightly so. Furthermore, the Maybeck jazz series is one of the best series of jazz piano recordings made, if not the best. You should own every album in the series just because it is a Maybeck recording. However, that said, for jazz listening experience, Dick Hyman isn't my kind of jazz. He feels too much like he is playing ragtime through every piece. By this I mean his playing feels heavily arranged. It feels like he practiced much too much in his earlier days with the metronome. Where is the let loose careless devil-may-care attitude that marks the best of jazz solo playing? There needs to be the equivalent in pre-bop of what Bud Powell gave to bop -nervous passion and the push beyond the limits of technique. Hyman's technique drives his playing. It should be the other way around. Earl Hines had a fantastic technique, but there was no mistaken that it was in the service of the music he created, and, in this sense, Earl signaled what was to come. But even the great stride pianists had that intensity and let-loose quality. Hyman seems so controlled, so exact, so unexciting, because he always seems to know where he is going. This is mind over -- blood sense? I wish I liked him more because he is one hell of a pianist. For jazz listening, however, I would rather go to the real thing than the repertory of it. Many excellent and highly regarded jazz musicians have done more for musical education than for the music, which is saying a lot - I put Wynton Marsalis in this category as well as Dick Hyman. They have been central in acculturating jazz as repertory music --the latest, and I hope, not the last, form in which jazz gets known beyond the devotees. Ah, give me a little of the down-to-earth and blood-level swinging of Dave McKenna right now, if you know what I mean. McKenna did a Maybeck recording too, and so did Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, and Joanne Brackeen. Now that is my kind of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Master At Play..........2001-03-28

Concord's decision in the early '90's to record in recital a wide array of the world's greatest jazz pianists was one of the greatest gifts ever bestowed upon the American public. All were recorded in the same venue for virtually the same group of listeners over the course of a number of years, and the sum total is an historic document that will enlighten and enthrall music lovers for generations to come.

Of all of these great recordings, the most completely satisfying may be this performance by Dick Hyman, one of America's greatest musicians. Film composer, arranger, conductor, and historian of jazz and other forms of indigenous music, he is still most astonishing when seated at a keyboard and given the opportunity to "just play." Of course, he can't resist a "theme," and it's staggering to look at the list of great hit songs from 1937, all permanent standards in the repertoire.

Hyman is the rare musician who has the technique to play absolutely anything he can think, and always thinks the extraordinary. Everything on this CD is wonderful, and it's marvelously recorded (there is audience noise, but it's not distracting). I am not a pianist myself, but this has already made my desert island short list. Buy it - you'll enjoy it forever.

    5 out of 5 stars A Divine Revelation.......2005-06-14

Everyone who knows what they are talking about agrees: Dinu Lipatti was heaven sent. Cortot thought so, so did Walter Legge and countless others. This recording is nothing short of the last and greatest divine revelation Lipatti gave us. The Schubert G Flat Major impromptu is one of the most amazing performances around. If you are a pianist, you must listen to Lipatti to understand what piano playing means.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-07-08

One of the most classic recitals in music history, played by a GOD.
