Bidú Sayão's silvery, impeccably tuned voice was small in size, but rich in nuance, shading, and emotion. Her recording of the Villa-Lobos Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 is justly famous, unmatched for lightness and sensuality. Few have dashed off the Jewel Song from Faust with similar insouciance or imbued the last phrases of Manon's "Adieu , notre petite table" as touchingly as Sayão does here. Her French song interpretations glow with charm and style, and a previously unreleased snippet from Ravel's L'enfant et les sotilèges makes one regret she never recorded the entire role, Sony's transfers are more lifelike and three dimensional than previous issues. A delectable disc. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars mesmerising.......2007-05-10

I first heard her voice on a Met compilation and became intrigued enough to buy this CD.
I love her voice...its so simple, unfussy and pure and yet so very unique. you know its her from the first few notes on.
I love her Manon, probably more so than Sills or Fleming. Her voice reminds me of De Los Angeles, but is different.
I'm glad I was introduced to this great, stylish and classy singer.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2007-01-24

I don't consider myself much more than a novice when it comes to opera; but I'm a musician, and I'd like to think I know good music when I hear it.

This is good music!

I've only recently become aquainted with Bidu Sayao, but I have to say that all the accolades I've read from the "experts" are well deserved. There is a character that shines through these recordings. And the recordings themselves are warm and pleasant, considering they come from mono shellac sides from another era.

There's something really special about this "vintage" music that seemingly cannot be replicated in modern recordings; an ethereal quality that's hard to explain, clearly belonging to the age from which it came. We are greatly enriched by its preservation!

5 out of 5 stars The most charming voice you will ever hear!.......2004-07-19

Bidu Sayão is considered the best Brazilian soprano ever and certainly one of the most taltented singers of the 20th century. Do you want to know why? This disc contains some important selections of Sayão's wonderful artistry. It includes arias and songs from French repertoire, in which Sayão is even in our days considered the most perfect example of French singing and style, some lovely Brazilian folksongs and her legendary recording of the Cantilena of Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5. It's a very good selection for every listener, since it shows Sayão's perfect vocal technique and sincere and moving interpretation. We have a joyful "Je veux vivre" as well as a heartbreaking "Adieu, notre petite table". Ah, but the true show here is her Bachianas Brasileiras. I'm absolutely sure you will never hear a better interpretation of this song! Sayão could sing from the most lyric parts and the most wonderful pianissimi to the most incredible coloraturas with no difficulty. Actually, she had exactly what I would call "perfect vocal technique", since it never, I mean, never fails. Her voice was small, but so carefully trained that it amazes me more than many big voices I heard. It's always pure, sweet and charming.

Dont' miss this singer who was maybe the best lyric soprano of the first half of the 20th century. If you are interested in listening to good music sung by a legendary voice, you really need to buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection!.......2003-12-16

There is a tremendous sincerity and perfection present in this CD. The Villa Lobos has attained classic status and should be owned by serious collectors. I have not heard No. 5 surpassed yet. Rosa Ponselle wrote in her biography that Sayao's pianissimi were "unequalled in my experience", the finest she had ever heard. Mind you, Ponselle heard them all including that Spanish Diva that made a career of singing softly. However, in Sayao's voice they have meaning are used to emotional effect superbly. Otherwise, the voice is so finely tuned that this old mono recording often gives a studio effect.

Bravo Madame Sayao!

Amazon.com essential recording

Don't be fooled by this disc's cartoonish cover. With its libretto by Colette and music by Ravel at his witty, jazzy peak,L'Enfant et les Sortilèges is hardly kiddie stuff, even if it is about a wicked child who has an epiphany when the inanimate objects he abuses begin talking back. It's an ideal CD opera, since it demands a fantastical staging that's best left to the imagination, and this new recording is among the best available. Surely, it's sassier, broader, and funnier than Previn's well-received previous recording; since making that recording, the conductor revitalized his jazz career and it shows in the new performance, which also has some sterling vocalism in three different roles by the woefully underrecorded soprano Elizabeth Futral. Also, the engineering has superb depth of field, revealing numerous, often unheard details in Ravel's most multifaceted score. Its main competition is also on Deutsche Grammophon: Lorin Maazel's scintillating, well-sung recording in a two-disc, midpriced set that contains Ravel's other opera, L'Heure Espagnole. It's a good deal, but those who only want L'Enfant can pay less money overall and also get Previn's good-but-not-great Ma Mère l'Oye (a similarly playful twist on children's literature). --David Patrick Stearns

3 out of 5 stars Ravel - meet Verdi?.......2006-09-28

This is NOT a review of the recording - it is a review of the booklet accompanying the CD - nearly every other page of the booklet is the libretto of Verdi's "Falstaff" - which means a good chunk of the program notes for the Ravel are NOT included!

2 out of 5 stars Sorry but Mr PREVIN is quite off the tracks.......2006-03-26

He has a beethovenian approach of the score which is quite a contradiction. Broad tempos, large orchestra, big sound.

Everything is technically perfect but we are very far from RAVEL. In addition, the french diction of the singers is very poor.

What a difference with his EMI recording of the 80's which is a real gem.

The reference is obviously Ansermet but let's not forget BOUR (mono sound) & JORDAN (stereo sound).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-09-18

I know L'enfant... almost as well as I know my name, and I don't even speak French. When compared to the many versions that I already have, it ranks second only to the version I remember from my childhood. Pairing L'enfant et les Sortileges with the Mother Goose Ballet was inspired. This CD would provide a wonderful introduction to opera and classical music in general to the young and those who are untested in classical music. There is one fault. I hate the cover art. I like Chuck Jones, He has made some great cartoons and created some memorable illustations however this misses target completely. It is as if he only listened to a small part of the opera and hastily threw something together to meet a deadline. None of the magic has been conveyed. There is so much more that could have been done. This may seem like a trifle to most but being a fanatic about L'enfant et les Sortiles as well as a graphic designer this was a disappointment. Apart from that The recording was great as was the performance. Very enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars Musical magic.......1999-09-12

At long last there is a set of the two Ravel operas that will be a welcome addition to any collection of French music, Ravel's works, opera, whatever sub-category you can name. Both are on Deutsche Grammophon label, both feature the London Symphony Orchestra under Andre Previn, and both have covers by cartoonist Chuck Jones that belie the value of what lies within. (457 590-2) is a charming work (literally) about a young boy who so maltreats his room, possessions and local animals that they all decide to counterattack. Usually done as a ballet with singers to the side, special effects (animated furniture and even a living math textbook) and the Dance dominate what the eye sees in a full production. But as with most good opera scores (we will debate the adjective at some other time), the music alone is enough to keep our attention as long as we follow the text for at least the first hearing. The lament of the Shepherds and Shepherdesses is among the loveliest moments in all opera, as is the very end when one word convinces the animals to spare the child. Pamela Helen Stephan makes the "Enfant" believable enough musically, although her voice is a bit too mature-sounding. Perhaps the Fire of Elizabeth Futral could use a bit more (forgive this) pyrotechnics, but she and the rest of the large cast are just fine in their roles of objects and animals. The filler offering on this disc, in the expanded orchestral version suffers by comparison with most competitive recordings; but thematically the producers could not have chosen a better companion piece. The second work, < L'Heure Espagnole> (457 590-2) begins very promisingly with the ticking of clocks. And indeed the plot is really quite funny what with grandfather clocks being carried up and down a flight of stairs, with and without amorous wooers hidden inside them. At first hearing, I planned to write how Chaucerian the whole thing was until I found the characters summing the whole thing up with a reference to Boccaccio! The problem on a recording is that the music follows French speaking patterns and there is simply not that much musically that will encourage repeated hearings. But I do urge local vocal groups to get a good English translation and do a staged production of this work as part of an evening's concert. It will be "a regular riot" as Jackie Gleason used to say. Again, the that fills out the CD has been far better treated on other recordings.

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 50 classical albums.......2006-08-25

This album has a place on my top fifty list; it's one that deserves a place in any and every collection once you've gotten through the first round of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven must-haves. The Ravel operettas are marvelous, and unlike anything else in the repertoire, and the two orchestral suites are required listening. All of this is music that came out of Paris in the early 20th century, when Paris was the artistic capital of the world; it's a welcome change, then, to (as the French have so quaintly put it) leave out the "sauerkraut" -- as the large majority of first-rate classical music has been so distinctly Teutonic -- and immerse yourself in Gallic styles and forms.

The one piece of these four that I do not find completely captivating is L'heure espagnole. I don't think this little operetta works very well on record: it strikes me as an opera of recitatives -- no arias, no big hummable tunes -- so that without seeing it staged you're missing so much of the content. The orchestral writing is subtle and colorful and the story is highly amusing, but again the music doesn't work so well on its own.

L'enfant et les sortilèges, on the other hand, is above criticism as performed here. I have an unreserved admiration for this opera. Quinessentially Ravelian melody and orchestral writing, wonderful characters, far-reaching thematic contrast and expressive range: this one has it all.

As for the orchestral pieces, Capriccio espagñol is a minor work next to L'enfant et les sortilèges and Chant du rossignol, but if you like Scheherezade you'll like Capriccio espagñol as well, and the Berlin Philharmonic's reading is first-rate. And this is easily my favorite performance of Stravinsky's Chant du rossignol. I know the Boulez/NYP recording, Oue/Minnesota, and Reiner/Chicago, but Maazel breathes fire and drive into the score that outdoes all of those.

5 out of 5 stars Opera ?...who knew?.......2005-10-19

These must be the definitive versions of all 4 compositions. Recorded in 1958, 59, 61 and 65 they still remain the yardstick of every subsequent issue and in my humble opinion, have not been bettered yet. Oh when Maazel was a young man could he "flail and wail". Just listen to Le Chant du Rossignol and Capriccio Espagnole and you might find yourself conducting the orchestra from YOUR music room. Exciting, beguiling, subtle finesse and oh yeah DYNAMICS. I'm a Rock musician so I know Dynamics (Ya think?). DGs transfer to CD is impeccable. Transparent, spacious and electrifying. Boy is this good stuff...

5 out of 5 stars Frighteningly Good!.......2004-04-07

When one comes across recordings like this there's always a risk of hyperbole. As simple as possible: these are exciting, inspiring, near-perfect performances of the Ravel operas. The engineering matches in quality. If you like Ravel, if you like opera, or if you're just curious about what a "near-perfect" performance sounds like then jump at this set. Also, the fillers are equally stunning. I've never heard (or even hoped for) a Capriccio Espagnol as striking as the one included. This collection, along with DG's release of Maazel's Firebird and El Amor Brujo (in this same series--and also great) has prompted a re-examination of earlier recordings by Lorin Maazel. Thanks DG and...Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording of a wonderful show.......2001-11-24

I was in a production of 'L'enfant...' last year, and was unable to find the recording in any of our local music stores. I finally found it, and it was worth the wait, especially coupled with Ravel's other work.
It's my favorite opera by Ravel, who is in turn my favorite composer.
Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Ravel at his most playful - a farce and a nightmare........2001-07-05

There aren't nearly enough farces in opera, and 'L'heure Espagnole' is one of the funniest, as well as one of the weirdest. It's been called Feydeauesque, but that's Feydeau rewritten by Hoffmann - instead of hiding in cupboards or running in and out of bedrooms, the various inadequate lovers conceal themselves in clocks carried up to the amative wife's bedroom by a dim, but brawny muleteer.

The music is a delight, Ravel revelling in his beloved Spanish idiom, and creating wonderful comic effects with a huge orchestra used with the lightness of a pencil. Most astonishing is the recreation of a clock shop, with its conflicting rhythms, parodying the necessity of time in music by creating an amiably arhythmic din. The opera is also a neat satire on the bourgeoisie, with an apparently hoodwinked clockmaker profiting from his wife's infidelities.

If 'L'heure' is a satiric farce, than 'L'enfant et les sortileges' is a fantasy and a nightmare. A sullen brat is grounded for not doing his homework. In a violent fit he vandalises his bedroom. Frighteningly, shards of the household gods come to life, taunting, abusing and inflicting dreadful violence on the boy. Colette's wonderfully playful libretto has been called a Disneyesque morality tale, but the sadistic relish with which the boy is made to learn his lesson has the cruelty of older, European traditions.

Highlights include the jazzy ire of a broken teapot, the harrowing fragmentation of a princess and her fairy tale, and a gloriously Ravelian recreation of a magical garden, full of wonder and violence. The music is a Miro painting come to life, all wit and colour, strange sounds and shapes: enigmatic, scary, delicious.

The fillers are approrpriate to each opera and point to the Russian influnece on Ravel - Rimsky-Korsakov's rollercoaster 'Capriccio Espagnole' and Stravinsky's berserk ballet 'Les Chants de rossignol', with its tantalising hints of 'The Rite of Spring'. Anyone familiar with Maazel's later, rather stodgy art will be amazed by his youthful fizz here, and the miraculous singing stretches all expectations of the voice's capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful..........2006-06-08

The repertoire on this CD is amazing; it's not easy to find a CD with some of this arias, that are rarely found in recordings (like "O legere hirondelle"). Also, her singing is fantastic: her voice is light and clear, pure high notes and amazing runs. She's a great coloratura! And I believe that this is a great CD to have.

2 out of 5 stars You want a French Coloratura? Buy Lily Pons instead.......2005-12-26

Natalie Dessay, while a true coloratura and nothing else but a coloratura, has incredible high notes (but not as incredible as Mady Mesple or Pons, those will stop your heart cold, they are so amazing) but lacks in middle range and her interpertation is rather non exsistent. I heard that is is a gifted actress but none of it reads in her recordings. Her tone is often grating and usually seems slightly forced. I prefer before my time singers such as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Medy Mesple (if you have not heard her, buy a cd NOW!) and of course, Lily Pons whose high notes are so effortless and breathtaking they don't even seem human. Natalie Dessay, sadly, does not impress me at all and frankly I don't understand why everyone is so enraptured with her. She's fine and yes, talented, but I'm just not feeling her singing. It just doesn't work for me. Wish she'd stop singing all the french, I get it, you're french but putting out like three french albums in a relatively short timeframe is kind of overkill.

5 out of 5 stars Dessay Sparkles in Familiar and Rare French Opera Arias.......2004-05-15

Natalie Dessay is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive coloratura sopranos of this century. And there is no better way to experience her voice and artistry than to hear her singing in her native tongue. This CD presents Dessay in a refreshing presentation of arias from both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, combining both well known music with some more modern rarities. The recital begins by presenting the soprano in music that fits her like a glove, "Où va la jeune indoue", the Bell Song from Delibes 'Lakmé'. It is a joy to hear Dessay creating a dreamy atmosphere, with full attention to the words and fearless in her attack of stacatti and high notes. She even sings the final high E in a crescendo. This Cd is high note feast, up to a sustained high A flat in "Ombre légère" from Meyerbeer's 'Le Pardon de Ploermel'. However, the stratopheric high notes are only part of the assets of Dessay. She is also willing to concentrate on character, something specially evident in the pieces from more modern operas. In "Arrière! Je réchaufe les bons" from Ravel's 'L'enfant et les sortilèges' her use of portamento makes this Fire commanding and menacing. Another delight is the feminist aria "No Monsieur mon mari" from 'Les Mammelles de Tirésias'by Poulenc she is a dynamo of energy and humor. Her Olympia and Ophélie are in the tradition of the great French coloratura sopranos like Pons, Robin and Mesplé. The CD ends beautifully with a sweet and poetic rendition of "O, amour, mystérieux amour", an unknown jewel from 'Les Caprices de Marianne' by Sauguet. This aria ends the recital in a high note both literally and metaphorically, with Dessay in a spectacular cadenza with pin point stacattos and a stunning high E than begins softly then goes louder until it goes again to pianissimo. The Orchestre Philarmonique de Monte-Carlo conducted by Patrick Fournillier complement Dessay's artistry beautifully. There are no weak point on this recital: these are sixty five minutes of pure joy.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable.......2003-06-04

To compare Dessay to Mado Robin or Erna Sack or Mady Mesple is simply ludicrous. She is in a different class. She can charachterise better than all of the above, she reaches all the notes with more ease, and she simply has the agility which none of those artists really have. Mesple was good for other things, but she wouldn't sing this repertoire, so please, spare us the gumph. Dessay is a fabulous artist, a light colloratura that travels with ease in the stratospheric heigths of the arias she performs. While there is not much on this disc of heartbreaking depth, it is very well sung. Occasionally the voice strikes one as a bit piercing, but generally there is more warmth than Sumi Jo, and less unsteadiness than Gruberova. I will not enter into a "spot-the-highest notes" contest, but enough to say the high(est) notes are all there. Light but highly enjoyable fare

5 out of 5 stars I can't say enough!.......2001-08-11

Natalie Dessay is the coloratura of our generation! Her voice is extremely impressive. Every album she releases has the vocal fireworks that any music lover wants from their sopranos. This album features some of the world's most beautiful French music. Her "Doll Song" is so fun and full of laughter and of course the high notes. The other highlights for me are Meyerbeer's "Ombre legere" and the "Bell Song" from Lakme. No other coloratura performing today can measure up to the power and strength that Natalie has with those gorgeous notes. She may not warm your heart when down in her mid-range but when she climbs up you can't help but open your mouth and say, now that's a note! Pay close attention to the super high G at the end of "Ombre legere". Wow!

Ravel's fantaisie lyrique is an indisputable masterpeace and this unsurpassed first performance presents the music at its greatness. The singers, although with no stars, make an outstanding team and the mono recording (1947) conveys the voices very firmly. Warning: After listening to this CD you will try to get Ravel's L'Heure espagnole. You need not bother as not just it is not as imaginative as this opera, it also has a very strong declamatory line and there are no regular arias as on L'Enfant.

4 out of 5 stars A Ravel omnium gatherum in Decca's best sound.......2006-08-09

Dutoit was Decca's house conductor of French music for almost two decades, and here is gathered at budget price all the significant orchestral works as well as the two piano concertos. The spledid sonics and Dutoit's reputation will probably be enough to attract listeners who want everything from one conductor, but to my ears none of these performances rises to the very highest level.

With Boulez, Munch, and Monteux looking over his shoulder, Dutoit's readings come off as colorful, restless, bright, often brash, and lacking in that final touch of elegant style. Outside the French tradition we also have great Ravel recordings form Karajan, Reiner, Bernstein, and (in the two operas) Maazel. I'm not so sure it's such a good idea to put all one's egs in Dutoit's basket.

      5 out of 5 stars A MORALITY PLAY.......2006-05-02

As morality plays go, this must be one of the very best. The libretto is by none other than Mme Colette, and the story concerns the fairy-tale adventures of a spoiled but basically good-hearted child and how he learns the worth of what he finds around him. He learns, for instance, not to pin the living beauty of a dragonfly to the wall just as a trophy. He learns not to inflict casual damage on a tree. He learns, even, not to be destructive and wasteful of the simple everyday environment of his home, and he learns the value of learning itself. There is no heavy moralising in this story, no sanctimoniousness and no punishment, and even the little animals, which start fighting among themselves under the influence of his petulance, stop fighting when his own comportment changes for the better - this is a lovely touch.

Ravel was no musical revolutionary, but he was even less of a traditionalist. His search was always for freshness (rather than novelty as such) in musical ideas, and he had no interest in opera as that was practised by Meyerbeer, Wagner and Gounod. This beautiful and touching little tale brings out the best and most characteristic in him. The influence of American music is there as usual, but I don't hear much or any Spanish or Basque idiom this time. The orchestral scoring has all his typical lightness and vividness, the little harlequinade of characters has variety and wit in the music to correspond with the text, and it is all just the right length for what it is, fitting comfortably and conveniently on to a single cd.

The recording was originally done in 1960 or 1961, and it won a Gramophone prize in the remastered category in 1989. In 2006 I find that it still sounds well, although not quite the kind of marvel of sound-engineering that we have got used to these days. When I wondered briefly whether I could really give it 5 stars for sound, I reflected that to make any complaint under the circumstances would be to behave rather like the child in his unreconstructed days, so 5 stars it is. The performance is really very good indeed, with the right prominence for the solo voices as well. The singers capture the humour and tenderness of this little masterpiece, and their work is excellent technically - I was particularly thrilled by a really superb long trill on `Aa!...' from Sylvaine Gilma in one of her roles as the Nightingale. The translation is adequate, but the liner-note and the synopsis are really very good, and what a pleasure it is to be able to say that for a change.

The disc seems to be out of production, so if it appeals to you I should get hold of an available copy without delay. I hope you like it, because if you don't the teapot, the tree, the bat, the owl, the grandfather clock, the dragonfly, the frog and the squirrel will be sad again, and old Mr Arithmetic himself may start getting his sums wrong.

5 out of 5 stars An astonishing triumph all around.......2005-09-18

Snap up used copies of this cherished recording while you can--it isn't in print so far as I know. (Note: Not long after writing this review I noticed to my delight that both of Mazzel's classic recordings of Ravel operas, this one and the equally delightful L'heure espagnol, have been reissued as a 2-CD set in DG's Originals series.) Maazel recorded Ravel's enchanting chamber opera with all-French forces in 1960, and everything works magically. The sonics are perfectly bright and detailed, the singing is dramatic and committed, the pacing is perfect.

It's hard to believe that Mazzel could produce such witty yet touching conducting. We are ever so delicately poised in Ravel's shadings of childhood melancholy, adult sophistication, comic pantomime and solemn whimsy. If you have heard other versions of Ravel's little masterpiece, you may dismiss it as slsightly twee and precious, but here the travails and come-uppance of a spoiled brat are treated with seriousness and empathy, not preciousness. This performance is very touching and lovely to listen to at every moment.
