The best Therese!.......2007-04-25

Out of the three best known 'Therese' (Though there is at least 1 other less known recording on CD) this is the only interesting one. I had bought the Orfeo label copy and the Channel Classics label copy first. I was bored witht the Orfeo one but nothing Massenet had done before had bored me so I tried the next available copy and it was even more boring. I had given up the opera until finaly this Decca version came out (Actually when a used copy became available since it had been out of production). Finally an exciting preformance! Finally one that captured the original Therese! Therese has gone from being the least listened to Massenet Opera I own to one of the most frequently heard! It is more than worth the cost, but Decca has been re-releasing a lot of their opera's so it might be worth waiting a little bit to see if this isn't re-released as well.
But from start to finish you can really feel everything in this recording. From the patriotism of the French revolutionary forces to passion of the main characters to the inevitable sadness at the end. Do not waste your time and money buying other recordings. None of them do this opera any real justice. But do not waste your time in obtaining this opera either.

Great Recording.......2000-06-12

"Therese" is not a very famous opera. Today exist three recording of the opera (one with Baltsa and Araiza and the other on Canal Grande with Jeanne Piland). This recording have a very good trio of singers: in the title role, Huguette Tourangeau, mezzo with a sensual voice who is capable to extract the heroism and the mathernal face of the role. With she, the tenor Ryland Davies and the baritone Louis Quilico, both of them very well in their roles. The orchestra sound excitant and strong. A good recording, specially for the fans of Massenet.
