The Wreckers are Grammy-winning songstress Michelle Branch and friend/journeywoman Nashville singer-songwriter Jessica Harp, a team whose solid craftsmanship and soaring, airtight harmonies often lift their hook-smart contemporary country stylings above what's too often mere fizzy, pop-crossover formula. They may have entered the public consciousness via the wide exposure of "Good Kind" on the primetime soap opera One Tree Hill, but the bracing, back-porch charms of the single "Leave the Pieces" should find them a following well beyond that series' teen audience. The reflective title track, gritty folk charms of "Tennessee" and giddy crowd-pleaser "My, Oh My" are suffused with a lyrical maturity that's the perfect counterpoint to the duo's sturdy musical constructs. Solid songs all, delivered with a muscular vocal conviction that does considerably more than merely sell them. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Wreckers are about creation, not destruction. Bringing together two young, fearless female singersongwriter-acoustic guitarists—Grammy®-winning, platinum-selling Michelle Branch and collaborator Jessica Harp—The Wreckers' debut album, Stand Still, Look Pretty, blends Branch's pop-rock sensibility with Harp's country-folk style. Edgy yet rootsy, on Stand Still, Look Pretty, The Wreckers have a ball.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony, Catchy Lyrics.......2007-07-26

This is one of my absolute favorite CD's. Most of the songs have a great beat and the slow ones make you want to sing along. Has a bit of a bluegrass sound and the harmony of the voices remind me of Big and Rich. This is a great CD if you're heartbroken (a lot of songs of leaving, being alone, etc). I highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-07-09

As many of you probably have, I listened to this album because it had Michelle Branch in it. I have to say that the vocals with Jessica Harp are fantastic and the sound of the songs are nice, but most of the songs aren't that great. Leave the Pieces is a nice song, but not that great. The only ones I enjoyed are Lay Me Down, Rain, The Good Kind, and Tenessee. The rest is mediocre. My, Oh My for instance is just plain boring. Rain is a great song, which sounds exactly as if it came off Hotel Paper, and isn't country at all. Lay Me Down isn't a truly great song, but I really enjoyed it. The Good Kind is a nice sounding song, and the melody reminds me of Breathe. Tenessee is a really good song.
I hope this review was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-28

I love that Michelle Branch can be successful with mainstream and well as country music. She has such a transitional voice and is well suited for both genres. This CD is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great debut.......2007-05-23

Overall, I really liked this album. Some of the songs were surprisingly short and sounded the same, but all in all this is a great start for the Wreckers.

Good album that is as easy on the ears. A good blend of country rock

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best CDs in my Collection.......2007-01-22

As an Australian user, I came across The Wrechers through a friend. I preordered this album (limited edition CD/DVD) through Amazon, and it was worth every cent. A great collection of easy to listen tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special but could have been.......2006-12-18

Having heard these young ladies on the radio and finding their harmonies reminiscent of The Kinleys, Dixie Chicks and SheDaisy, I bought the CD with nothing else to recommend it. It's a disappointment on a couple of levels.

They have nice voices. Not great voices but nice, pleasant voices and they harmonize well. Not having a great voice can still work okay if there is something to say. On this recording, the material is weak. Very, very weak. Not one song is really interesting or stands out in the vast quagmire of today's country-pop radio playlist. Every song is immaculately produced to sound like everything else deemed worthy of radio airplay.

This recording never rises above the level of mediocrity. On that level, it would rank three stars. However, there is obviously some talent here that needs someone or something to kickstart it. That is what is really disappointing and, because it could have been a better recording, I can only give it two-stars.

    3 out of 5 stars The Wreckers/ Stand still-look pretty.......2006-08-30

Well, The Wreckers definitely have potential. This is labeled as a country album and getting plenty of air time on the metropolitan country stations "Leave the pieces" is really good.
"Way back home" is pretty good. However "the good kind" is a pretty good pop song and from there the album seems to all run together. Seemless with sameness. Pure pop.
I guess the blame if any should go to the record producers. They can't call it pure pop and it's not quite country so they say "hey! let's slap a country label on it and see where it goes". This is their 1st attempt at a country cd so I give them credit and the benefit of the doubt and wait to see what they do next.
Bottom line; If you're a true country fan you'll like a couple maybe 3 songs. On the other hand if you are in the process of crossing over to country or like a mix of lots of pop and a little country, it's worth aquiring for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Michelle goes country.......2006-08-14

I have been a fan of Michelle Branch's music for some time and I eagerly awaited the release of her next album. This collaboration with Jessica Harp is a serious break from the genre of music that Michelle wrote for her previous releases. She has taken on a very country sound but as ever she does it well. I would recommend this album for anyone who is looking for something to chill out and relax to and I cannot wait to see what her next album will bring.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic stuff.......2006-07-17

Michelle Branch faced a lot of trouble with her record company when she wanted to go country, but it was all worth it. This new project with friend jessica harp is an amazing collection of songs that can be appreciated by pop, rock and country fans. i wish this incredible duo all the best. Michelle Branch has changed my life

With its emphasis on acoustic arrangements, the Wreckers' debut is full of sassy sunshine. This tribute takes these songs a little further into the woods where electricity can't get to them. Banjo, mandolin, and guitar combine to give the Wreckers' songs blazing bluegrass flavor. Sweet, rural harmonies soar, channeling the charming chemistry of Michelle and Jessica. My, oh my!

5 out of 5 stars Political Punk without hackneyed Bush-bashin' TRUE punk.......2006-10-03

Today, if one were to declare themself a "punker," the majority around the individual would instantly assume that this so-called punker was into bands such as Simple Plan, Rise Against, AFI, The Sounds, The Casualties, and other media-manipulated, poorly-imitated, popular "punk."

                ONEWORDSOLUTION is anything but...

The quintet consists of frontman Nic Nak, guitarists Hef and Dave, bassist Ark, and drummer Evan. Although there are no searing solos, outrageous drum fills, or varying vocals, these five are still virtuosos: Virtuosos of intellect. The lyrics are an inspiration on their own, encouraging listeners to turn off the television and turn on the truth, unite together as one, encourage anti-racism and except individuality, and to rise above and overtake our current Bush administration.

However, it's not just anarchy for the sake of anarchy just because they are punks (and not even the typical punks with the mohawks and plaid-pants. They are regular looking guys, embodying their ideas and support for the common-man being able to overcome). They have what I call "intelligent hate." ONEWORDSOLUTION has done their homework, they know what they're talking about and make a solid, concisely stated, intellectual argument. Some may say that they are extremely liberal, but these five should be given a political party of their own. "Hi yes, I'm of the ONEWORD party."

For the die-hard fans of punk who go to a show to mosh their face off and dominate the pits, this album absolutely delivers. Despite being a punk band, the guitarists possess a sense of technicality not common of the typical three-chord punk progressions, and there are also solos interspersed on the album, such as on the second track, "Kindumb" (clever pun eh? See, told you these guys were good). Evan keeps the tempo fast and mosh-worthy, with heavy break-downs. Ark is an amazing bassist with creative basslines that are clearly distinguishable over Hef and Dave's duel guitar attack, and Nic Nak gives your ears a run for their money as he spits out the lyrics with the speed and accuracy of rap's fastest and finest (as demonstrated on songs like "Subtle Approach" and "Nausea"). The boys even incorporate syncopated-reggae rythmns on the song "Wasteland" and give you a punk-tastic rap on previously stated "Nausea."

I can listen to this album all the way through, and all the way through again, from first to last, and last to first, you'll never want ONEWORDSOLUTION to end. If you're sick of the [...] that's trying to be passed off as punk, "WALLSWITHOUTWINDOWS" is a definite buy. And hey, the guys are even friendly in person, and seeing them live is a whole other story. There's inevitably a strong sense of unity and encouragement at their shows.
