5 out of 5 stars One of the starting points of modern operas.......2004-05-01

Here we only have nine of the songs of this famous « opera » or rather « semi-opera » in the tradition of Purcell. It is a shame, in a way, not to have the whole play which is rarely performed, and the whole score of the play. It is also a shame that we cannot easily find the arranged version of Benjamin Britten. This old play or opera by Gay has been kind of pushed aside by the version of it proposed by Brecht. The various songs on this CD are very typical of English music in the 18th century and the subject, real society, shows an evolution in England that will catch on the continent later. It has to be contrasted with Handel at the time and it shows the same musical evolution : a distanciation from religion, continuing Purcell's experiments and opening the gates to the next phase that will emerge from the Mannheim school with Mozart and his Magic Flute. This opera is thus a milestone in music history and a starting block for maybe one full century of music in Europe. It is inspiring in many ways. The music and singing on this CD are both light and clear, enchanting and mesmerizing in many ways, modern and traditional at the same time. A moment in music that cannot be ignored or pushed aside.

5 out of 5 stars chillingly beautiful.......2001-10-24

i am a novice to classical music, growing up with the Beatles. i found this cd utterly beautiful, even sending chills up my spine, for instance, with the third song, "oh, the broom". i am having fun using Amazon's expert recommendations! i have expanded my musical horizons much. thank you Amazon. this cd, mostly ballads from renaissance era, make some of our rock ballads seem pallid in comparison in regards to musical construction. the songs included on this cd have lyrics which are mostly about love between a girl and boy, sometimes married but hopelessly fascinated with the new boy or girl. its somehow comforting that human nature in love with love has never changed for centuries, scientific methods or religious morality regardless.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Charming.......2000-06-28

At the crossroads of traditional folk music and chamber music, the Broadside Band has made an understated gem. The arrangments are delicate without sounding too precious, and Paul Elliott's and Patrizia Kwella's voices are ideal.

Your best bet is buy the CD here on Amazon.com, because it is very difficult to find in stores and is often sold for more.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......1999-04-19

Paul Elliott has an extraordinary voice. He was a long-time member of the Hilliard, and then he went off with Paul Hillier to his newly formed Theatre of Voices. Elliott's voice is sort of like Rogers Covey-Crump's but not as sour, and that's the beauty of it! John Gay's Beggar's Opera has some very enjoyable tunes, and the cutest lyrics. It's not Handel, but you'll like it. Patricia Kwella's bell-like voice is also very memorable.

P.S. If you happen to see anywhere The Hilliard's Dunstable Motets, GRAB IT! It's one of the most awesome early music recordings ever made. Paul Elliott delivers a truly stunning performance.

5 out of 5 stars music and musicology.......2006-05-26

i've had the original release for more years than i will admit. it's as enjoyable today as it was the first time i listened to it.

in addition to the john gay versions are the earliest known versions of the songs and some that came afterwards. for example, the tune of what most people know as 'greensleeves' is played from the first known italian setting (15th century as i recall) to one done in the irish folk style from the 19th century, with gay's version in the middle.

gay borrowed many of his tunes from other songs that were familiar to his audience. where the original might be sentimental or even religious in content, gay would write a bawdy or satiric version, which would have had added interest and humor for his audience.

but don't think that all this impressive scholarship makes for a dull time. the musicians are first rate and the disc can be enjoyed simply as wonderfully played and sung 18th music.

4 out of 5 stars Spare and bitter origins of British opera.......2003-11-19

This is a splendid performance of astringent pieces from the original Beggar's Opera performed in opposition to importation of the lush continental style.
