Full of Joie-de-vivre.......2004-12-14

This 1988 Naxos recording is one of a Mozart series that Barry Wordsworth made with the Capella Istropolitana. And as with the symphonies, these overtures have a lot going for them. The playing is fresh and full of joie-de-vivre, the sound is (despite the echoey Concert Hall in Bratislava, Slovakia) perfectly acceptable, and the notes are helpful. Particularly praiseworthy of course is the decision to record Mozart's early overtures and to put them in chronological order, thus giving a context to the better-known opera introductions, which are here recorded successfully and with great gusto. Perhaps this is not quite up to the standard of some of the leading period instrument ensembles (e. g. Tafelmusik on Sony), but for a budget CD it is a remarkably good effort.

Reason # 249 why naxos rules the world. Its hard to beat this: A long disc with a darn near complete catalogue of major Mozart overtures, played extremely well and with considerable verve.

This is a wonderful collection of overtures for any collector of Mozart. It is especially good for newcomers to classical music of which I am one. Overtures are among my favorites because they are always lively and exciting. The orchestra does an admirable job of interpreting Mozart.

As a newcomer to classical music, I've already discovered that my favorite composer is Mozart. I wanted to try a CD of his overtures because overtures are always exciting. I wasn't disappointed. This has become one of my favorite classical CD's. The musicians are excellent and it is a really good value.

Absolutely Charming!.......2001-09-07

This is a wonderful recording of one of Mozart's earliest operas. Even at age twelve, Mozart's sheer talents for the genre are evident. While the arias are short and simple as compared to his later works, they are still quite captivating. I couldn't put this CD down for three months! And I'm still enjoying it today. Edita Gruberova's sweet, angelic voice is perfect for her role as Bastienne, and V. Cole and Polgar are also well suited to their roles. All performers bring charm and vitality to their parts. I would highly recommend this recording to any Mozart fan, you will be absolutely swept away by its ingenuous beauty. I would also reccomend it to anyone who is just starting out with opera, because it is lively and not too heavy. This piece is very easy to enjoy.

Pretty good Music........2000-08-21

Bastien and Bastienne was really never perfomed in mozart's lifetime, it was in 1890! that the opera was performed. I am not very fond of Early Mozart. The music is to light. the music in bastien and Bastienne is not at all like I excpected it to be. The music is beautiful and the conducting is good as well. Edita Gruberova does a great job as Bastienne and Vinson Cole does a great job as bastien. The magician Laszlo Polgar is good as well. The Opera is not as long as a mozart opera act! The arias put here are very nice as well. The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra does a great job. Buy this recording of an early Masterpiece.

The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

Delightful big-band Mozart.......2006-09-01

This collection of 12 of Mozart's opera overtures is a wonderful CD that never wanes in its ability to delight. Although Colin Davis is an accomplished Mozartean in his own right, the Staatskapelle Dresden has the music in its veins and plays each of these pieces to the hilt. Notice the particularly punchy sound the band makes in the overture to Cosi or the fiery string playing in the overture to Figaro. The Sonics are warm, the sound transparent, and the readings are all taken at light-hearted tempos. True, perhaps Don Giovianni is lacking the heavy gravitas of some period instrument recordings and Die Zauberflöte could have a touch more zest, but these small complaints are outweighed by the tremendously thoughtful music making. On a side note, these forces recorded the late symphonies of this composer on Phillips with much success, recordings that continue in the spirit of this CD. Recommended.

Top marks for Sir Colin's RCA Mozart Overtures.......2005-09-15

I had read in the November/December 1999 issue of AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE that Colin Davis's Dresden Staatskapelle recording of Mozart Overtures was excellent, but didn't realize how fine these were until listening to them (a recent acquisition via Amazon.com) today. These are so fine: sound, playing, acoustic sound stage: I do not know where to begin. Sir Colin's phrasing and tempos are excellent, serving Mozart at the highest level.

The Dresden State Orchestra is no stranger to Mozart, having recorded IDOMENEO, THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO, LA CLEMENZA DI TITO, AND DER SCHAUSPIELDIREKTOR (The Impressario) with Karl Bohm for DG in the 1970s, and a disc of Mozart Overtures with Hans Vonk for Capriccio in 1985. They are also not strangers to Sir Colin Davis, having recorded Beethoven's 4th and 5th Piano Concertos under his direction with pianist Claudio Arrau (Philips); the Brahms Symphonies (RCA); Beethoven Symphonies (Philips); and Berlioz Overtures (RCA). There are other recordings of the Davis/Dresden Staatskapelle partnership, but these are the ones I could think of at the moment.

This disc lasts 61 minutes, and it seems to go by in about 10, giving rise to the saying of Albert Einstein that something pleasurable goes by very quickly, yet something miserable (i.e. touching a hot burner with your bare hand) seems to be an eternity. I can't recall the exact quote, but you get my point.
This is a very fine album, and will bring delight to anyone who loves Mozart as I do.

top sound quality (20-bit-recording; one can hear the difference versus a conventional recording!) plus an enrapturing drive bringing about the ambience of the respective operas... one of the pearls in my CD-collection!

More than Wallpaper.......2000-04-25

This Mozart overture collection contains 12 of Mozarts overtures, some quite familiar and others not as well known, but still full of charm. This collection contains overtures of a young Mozart to an older Mozart; lesser known to infamous. For die-hard Mozart fans, a definite must-have.

Mozart's younger and less-known operas, and subsequently the overtures, lack a little in inventiveness. However, even at a young age, Mozart's ability to construct a tuneful melody, as well as engaging orchestrations are unbelieveable. His earlier overtures really resemble Baroque overtures; usually in three sections, fast/slow/fast, the music didn't nessecarily have anything to do with the action. It is his more mature overtures, beginning with Idomaneo, that Mozart is more creative in melding the music of the overture with the theme of the opera. Also, his melodies and orchestrations exhibit some forward-looking composition shared in his piano concertos. He also makes the overture into one contiunous movement with little to no development. Of particular note, the bubbling opening melody from the Marriage of Figaro to the compex, but dramatic fugal opening to the Masonic-based Singspiel The Magic Flute. The music is captivating and fresh.

Sir Colin Davis and the Dresden Staatskapelle are crisp and clean, much like a chamber ensemble. Davis does not use a heavy hand, and the execution is terrific. The hall adds to the dry sound, still giving the ensemble a full, modern sound, but with the technique that a classical era composition needs. Twelve overtures on a digital, sonically pleasing disk is a must have; this one works perfectly well.

Early Mozart well performed.......2000-12-29

I am a fan of both Mozart and Peter Schreier, and the relatively low purchase price of this disc clinched my decision to buy it. Overall I am quite pleased with it. "Bastien und Bastienne" is an innocuously fluffy Singspiel with music written by Mozart at the age of twelve. It is charming, rather than profound, and the musical pieces, while short and for the most part simple, do illuminate the psychological state of the characters who sing them, and are always pleasant. (Still, if you're new to Mozart's operas and looking for one to start with, you should look to the later ones rather than this one to hear the full measure of his genius.) The performers have spared none of their artistry in bringing these characters to life, with the result that the musical numbers are fine examples of Mozartean performance style and the spoken dialogue moves along with energy and enough expression to amuse even those of us listeners who do not speak German. To help us out, the CD liner includes the text of the Singspiel with a parallel English translation (uncharacteristic of many Berlin Classics recordings).

I really enjoy listening to Peter Schreier and Theo Adam in this work. Adele Stolte's voice is regrettably a bit too stiff and straight to suit me; I can imagine the warmth that a lyric soprano like Elly Ameling or Lucia Popp would have brought to this role. I have not heard other recordings of this work, so I cannot compare this to them, but certainly the price of this disc and the overall high standards of performance make it attractive.

As a bonus, the disc includes two Mozart concert arias performed by Peter Schreier. These arias have Italian texts, and were recorded in 1968, three years after the 1965 recording date for "Bastien und Bastienne." Since my high regard for Peter Schreier's artistry predisposes me to love anything he does, I tried to be as objective as possible in listening to these arias for review purposes. While his lyrical sound, intonation, and legato line are fine, I have to say that I would like these arias to "sound more Italian" (both in diction and phrasing) than they do. (I don't have this problem with his later performances of Mozart's Italian operas, for example the 1977 "Don Giovanni" under Karl Bohm.) Performances of these arias by other artists on the larger, more expensive collections of Mozart concert arias may well be better (although these are by no means bad), so I wouldn't buy this disc just for the concert arias, unless price really is the object.

good piece and well performed by WSK singers.... Remember this is an opera that Mozart wrote when he was 12yo.... It's written for boychoir and this is a great performance made by one of the best boychoir in the world. I dunno...but I think that european musical tradition is not well understood in USA In Europe boys learn to sing respecting one secular tradition.

Mozart's one-act songspiel was written when he was twelve as a commission for the notorious Doctor Mesmer, and based on a libretto parodying Jean-Jacques Rousseau's interlude 'Le devin du village'. it tells the story of a shepherdess, her fickle lover and the supposed magician who brings them together. The twist is that the parts are sung by children, and Mozart has great fun colouring these caricatures of adult passion with music of restless playfulness.

There are tantalising glimpses of later masterpieces throughout: the spooky dark drama of arias 10 and 14, for instance, look to 'The Magic Flute', while Bastien's rapture in no. 11 matching later such moments in 'Figaro' and 'Cosi'. the scathing and intense duet leading to reconciliation already suggests Mozart's precocious insights into the tragicomedy of heterosexual relationships.

The problem is the singing - as Charlotte Church has shown, children's voices tend to be monotonous and emotionally colorless - Georg Nigl as Bastien is particularly unattractive with his rheumy declamation. this aspect also ruins the two otherwise gorgeous lieder that close the set - 'Contentment', an early stab at 'I got plenty of nuttin'', and 'Come, dear zither, come'.

Disappointing.......2000-01-15

This is, not surprisingly, pleasant but hardly magnificent music. But it is interesting and superior to much of 18th century opera -- what an astounding genius Mozart was to compose such music even at such a tender age! However, this recording is disappointging. Whether it is the singer, or the engineer, I find Bastienne's (Dominik Orieschnig) singing harsh to the point of being unpleasant while Harrer's conducting is somewhat leaden.
