Album Description

A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.

"Beautiful"? I did not find anything about this music "beautiful". Most of it is very dark and depressing. A few of the songs sound like something you would hear in a horror movie. Now I know why they do not provide samples to listen to. The only two songs I found pleasant to listen to were "Zilberts: Reb Dovid'l" and "Meyerowitz: Gelt (Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt)". I am very disappointed. Admittedly, I purchased this CD without really knowing what to expect. I just trusted the previous reviews. Try to find samples to listen to before you purchase this CD to see if you like this kind of music.

I love this CD and have bought several for friends. Music is so very beautiful. Toda raba!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13

Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really matter. This superb music is an important part of our Jewish legacy in its own right.

On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2003-12-05

I recently received this CD as a gift and was simply overwhelmed by how beautiful it is. The music, the playing, and the recording are all stunning. The interpretations of the well known works are magnificent and the pieces by Zilberts and Meyerowitz are a revelation. I cannot recommend this recording highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection.......2002-11-17

Jewish Cello Masterpieces is magnificent! This is a soulful performance by a true cello master. I look forward to more work from Richard Locker!

Pianist Ben Zebelman has attempted something remarkable with Kol Nidre Variations, a disc of piano trio compositions based on the ancient Jewish prayer sung on the eve of Yom Kippur. While Yiddish klezmer music has seen plenty of spinoffs and branches (it can be heard in jazz, classical, and even pop tunes), the haunting melody of the Kol Nidre hasn't been too exploited: Schoenberg used it in an orchestral score, and Beethoven's Op. 131 begins with the Nidre theme. Zebelman's project, however, is much larger. It's entirely focused on the ancient prayer. With its soft focus and mesmerizing piano line, the first movement "The Vow" is a cross between contemporary instrumental music and classical. At five and a half minutes, "Dance of the Spirits" is the shortest but perhaps most interesting movement on the disc. Filled with soulful passages courtesy of the string section, its quick pace is riveting. "Redemption," the work's final movement, is surprising, filled with peppy movements where cellist Maureen McDermott is able to show her skills. Does it work? Yes. The simple, centuries-old chant--transformed here into chamber music in four pieces--ends up sounding fresh and (thankfully) still powerful as an instrumental work. In all, it's 39 minutes of moving, serene, and soulful music. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2007-07-09

I feel compelled to write this because I cannot believe so many people find this recording a good investment.
First of all, the playing of all involved is amateurish, to say the least. There is no refinement by any of these musicians, especially the composer, who is definitely not a better pianist.
The sound leaves much to be desired. It sounds almost as a good home recording, not more. Dryish, no ambiance, and enphasizing the shortcoming of the performers.
The music? I found it too much sugar, no meat. The premise looked interesting on paper.
Lastly, the CD is a skimpy 38'58". But that's OK; it reminded me of the two Jewish ladies complaining. The first 'how bad the food was...' the second 'and the portions so small!' I was glad this was over.
After reading the reviews, I expected something more profund & spiritual. I should be careful next time.
Bruch, take me back...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving, uplifting.......2002-04-15

This is hands down the most beautiful piece of music I have felt in a very long time. It takes me through a variety of emotions as I listen to it. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2000-03-31

I wasn't certain what to expect from a variation on Kol Nidre by a Zebelman, a McDermott, and a Chang. What I got exceeded any expectation. The music is beautiful in its own right, creating tremendous complexity with a very simple combination of instruments, but it also manages to capture the introspection of the High Holy Days in a way that is very touching and timeless. We used a selection of this recording as a meditation at our Kol Nidre service this year. I am hoping that Mr. Zebelman will be encouraged by this acheivement to create more works of this kind. Somehow, his compositions bring clarity to the uncertain nature of modern Judaism. I don't know what he might make out of "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" but I would love to hear it.

4 out of 5 stars Waiting for more from the composer.......1999-12-16

I waited what seemed like a long time to receive this after it came out and was not a bit disappointed. Beautifully done...talented new composer and equally talented musicians...this music speaks to the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Kol Nidre Variations.......1999-12-04

This ia a wonderful piece of music. The three talented muscians (Zeblman, McDermott & Chang)take a Jewish holy prayer and develop it into a musical inspriation that anyone can appreciate and enjoy. It is a very moving experience to just sit quitely and listen! I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to mix classical, jazz and new age music on their CD players.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2003-04-05

I find this CD really soothes my road rage in the car and makes me feel that nothing bothers me. Overall, the tracks may sound similar if you are paying attention to your driving, but that's not a bad thing when they're all good. But when I bring it inside and pay attention, I find the subtleties to be enjoyable and charming. Avinu Malkeinu is my favorite, bringing tears to my eyes the first time I heard this version.

This CD was a recommendation to me by friends, and now I am making the same recommendation to others.

5 out of 5 stars Pure ahhhhhhhh.......2002-12-02

This music arranged by Rachel Van Voorhees is simply beautiful and relaxing. There are 35 separate pieces, varied and lovely. There are some klezmer-origin type songs, yet they are lively but soft, and blend well with the rest of the CD. The sound quality is excellent.

Though I haven't been raised with Jewish music and therefore don't know whether the meanings of some of the songs would be appropriate for various formal events (like weddings), I can say that out of the 35 songs, there are surely some that would be suitable regardless of whether the event is a wedding, a nice Shabbat dinner, meditation, or simply relaxation as you're falling asleep.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely on MY list of Jewish favorites!.......2001-03-09

This CD by master harpist Rachel Van Voorhees has over 25 tracks of wonderful Jewish music. You'll find favorites such as Zum Gali Gali, Dreydl, Erev Shel Shoshannim, Hatikvah, Kvare Achare Chatzot (my personal favorite) and many, many other selections. Van Voorhees exhibits a wide array of tone colors, tempos, and styles in the music, which she arranged herself. This CD would make a perfect gift, and would serve well as background music to any party, Shabbat dinner, or simply as a relaxer! I highly recommend Rachel Van Voorhees' Jewish Favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Chazzanut at its best .......2007-05-18

I remember listening to Yossele Rosenblat on old scratchy 78's in the house of my Bubbe and Zayde Freedman too many years ago.
Thus the quality of the sound on this C.D. is striking. To hear the truly beautiful voice of Sirota, or the stately power of Rosenblatt, or the operatic brilliance of Richard Tucker is a pure pleasure.
This is a classic collection of some of the best in Chazzanut.

5 out of 5 stars About the Legendary Cantors CD.......2006-07-10

This CD plays beautiful sounds as some of these
cantorials are at least 70 or so years old.
    Really excellent.

5 out of 5 stars historic recordings, great voices.......2004-10-15

The earliest recording on this CD is from 1907, with Gershon Sirota (1874-1943) singing "Veshomru" with a power that age cannot diminish; the quality of the sound, as with the other tracks on this CD, is amazingly clear, with digital recordings from the original 78 rpm discs. The two most recent recordings are from 1947, with Leibele Waldeman ("Shuvi Nafshi") and Richard Tucker ("Sholom Secunda" - "Yiru Eneinu"). Tucker of course was also a big star at the Metropolitan Opera, and was one of the most famous tenors of his generation, but never abandoned Chazanut, and made many recordings of cantorial works.

Some highlights for me are the great Joseph Rosenblatt (1882-1933) exquisitely singing "Yaaleh V'Yoveh", recorded in 1925 with orchestra, Manfred Lewandowsky (1895-1970) with "Haneovim" from 1928, and Shalom Katz (b. 1910) with "Sasa Grossman" - "El Moleh Rachamim" who does some incredible pianissimos, as do many of the other cantors on this disc.
There is however, not a single track that does not have immense beauty, as these fabulous voices rise up like a plaintive call to God from the soul.

The booklet insert is excellent, with detailed liner notes on the history of cantorial singing, a synopses of the prayers sung, and biographies of the cantors, some of them including a small photograph. As mentioned previously, the sound is remarkable for its age, and total playing time is 72'28.
This is a fabulous CD for anyone who loves to listen to the masters of Chazanut, or would like to explore the musical heritage of the Jewish faith.

Extraordinary does not begin to describe the beauty and depth of this album recorded live with three of the finest male cantors in the world today. I have the video, but it does not require the video to feel the joy in their performance together in this historical Amsterdam synagogue.

I'm a bit biased...because the performer is my father. However, objectively, this work is one of his best. It includes performances from all over Eastern Europe. His musical genius is evident and his masterful voice leads one to experience the pure artistry and grandeur of the selections. I have been told by some that his voice is healing and puts the listener into an altered state of consciousness, closer to the creator.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blessed by Jewish Music.......2007-02-18

Wow! This album was my introduction to some of the most beautiful soothing music I have ever heard. At bedtime I turn my CD player volume
on low and am lullibied to sleep.

Now I'm looking for another similar CD. I was able to use the "Listen"
format on this one before purchase which was so helpful for me since I was
unfamiliar with the musicians. Now, although, the CD does'nt have the
"listen" option, and I'll therefore just have to trust the personal reviews, I think I will order the jewish cello and piano by Richard Loch.

All I know is after listening to Chants Judif, I must have more.
