Album Description
A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.Customer Reviews:
"Beautiful"? More like "funereal". Very dark and depressing........2007-07-12
BEAUTIFUL!!.......2006-01-07
Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13
On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)

Pianist Ben Zebelman has attempted something remarkable with Kol Nidre Variations, a disc of piano trio compositions based on the ancient Jewish prayer sung on the eve of Yom Kippur. While Yiddish klezmer music has seen plenty of spinoffs and branches (it can be heard in jazz, classical, and even pop tunes), the haunting melody of the Kol Nidre hasn't been too exploited: Schoenberg used it in an orchestral score, and Beethoven's Op. 131 begins with the Nidre theme. Zebelman's project, however, is much larger. It's entirely focused on the ancient prayer. With its soft focus and mesmerizing piano line, the first movement "The Vow" is a cross between contemporary instrumental music and classical. At five and a half minutes, "Dance of the Spirits" is the shortest but perhaps most interesting movement on the disc. Filled with soulful passages courtesy of the string section, its quick pace is riveting. "Redemption," the work's final movement, is surprising, filled with peppy movements where cellist Maureen McDermott is able to show her skills. Does it work? Yes. The simple, centuries-old chant--transformed here into chamber music in four pieces--ends up sounding fresh and (thankfully) still powerful as an instrumental work. In all, it's 39 minutes of moving, serene, and soulful music. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Amateurish.......2007-07-09
First of all, the playing of all involved is amateurish, to say the least. There is no refinement by any of these musicians, especially the composer, who is definitely not a better pianist.
The sound leaves much to be desired. It sounds almost as a good home recording, not more. Dryish, no ambiance, and enphasizing the shortcoming of the performers.
The music? I found it too much sugar, no meat. The premise looked interesting on paper.
Lastly, the CD is a skimpy 38'58". But that's OK; it reminded me of the two Jewish ladies complaining. The first 'how bad the food was...' the second 'and the portions so small!' I was glad this was over.
After reading the reviews, I expected something more profund & spiritual. I should be careful next time.
Bruch, take me back...

Soothing.......2003-04-05
This CD was a recommendation to me by friends, and now I am making the same recommendation to others.
Pure ahhhhhhhh.......2002-12-02
Though I haven't been raised with Jewish music and therefore don't know whether the meanings of some of the songs would be appropriate for various formal events (like weddings), I can say that out of the 35 songs, there are surely some that would be suitable regardless of whether the event is a wedding, a nice Shabbat dinner, meditation, or simply relaxation as you're falling asleep.
Definitely on MY list of Jewish favorites!.......2001-03-09

Chazzanut at its best .......2007-05-18
Thus the quality of the sound on this C.D. is striking. To hear the truly beautiful voice of Sirota, or the stately power of Rosenblatt, or the operatic brilliance of Richard Tucker is a pure pleasure.
This is a classic collection of some of the best in Chazzanut.
About the Legendary Cantors CD.......2006-07-10
cantorials are at least 70 or so years old.
Really excellent.
historic recordings, great voices.......2004-10-15
Some highlights for me are the great Joseph Rosenblatt (1882-1933) exquisitely singing "Yaaleh V'Yoveh", recorded in 1925 with orchestra, Manfred Lewandowsky (1895-1970) with "Haneovim" from 1928, and Shalom Katz (b. 1910) with "Sasa Grossman" - "El Moleh Rachamim" who does some incredible pianissimos, as do many of the other cantors on this disc.
There is however, not a single track that does not have immense beauty, as these fabulous voices rise up like a plaintive call to God from the soul.
The booklet insert is excellent, with detailed liner notes on the history of cantorial singing, a synopses of the prayers sung, and biographies of the cantors, some of them including a small photograph. As mentioned previously, the sound is remarkable for its age, and total playing time is 72'28.
This is a fabulous CD for anyone who loves to listen to the masters of Chazanut, or would like to explore the musical heritage of the Jewish faith.

Blessed by Jewish Music.......2007-02-18
on low and am lullibied to sleep.
Now I'm looking for another similar CD. I was able to use the "Listen"
format on this one before purchase which was so helpful for me since I was
unfamiliar with the musicians. Now, although, the CD does'nt have the
"listen" option, and I'll therefore just have to trust the personal reviews, I think I will order the jewish cello and piano by Richard Loch.
All I know is after listening to Chants Judif, I must have more.
