Another fusion classic.......2006-06-28

This is a great fusion album, true to the electric fusion tradition, as founded by Chick Corea, who is continuing in much the same vein. The quality of the compositions, arrangements and production are very high. I'd say that the sound is comparable to Return To Forever, sometimes sweet, sometimes hard-hitting and bombastic, sometimes spacey - it's all there for the fusion fans to savour!

MORE MERRYMENT FROM THE MASTER........1999-09-29

Chick Corea has made so many good recordings, and the Touchstone is one of his better one's. We have here a fusion of Jazz, Classic, Flamengo, Latin and Rock, and for me at least it is great to hear the old Return To Forever play together on one song (Compadres) it's just as great as the songs and the playing on albums like Romantic Warrior and No Mystery. Another great song is The Yellow Nimbus which features Paco DeLucia and if you want to hear an excellent solo piano version of that song you should check out the video Piano Legends which Corea hosts and is about great jazz pianists.

In short, Great Playing, Great Compositions, GREAT FUN. Can we have some More Please Corea.

Hidden gem.......2007-03-28

Ellwood is a brilliant guitarist. If you enjoy relaxing, melodic acoustic guitar, he's your guy. His CDs are so good that you scratch your head wondering why he continues to fly so under the radar. Every song on Touchstone is good. The title track, "Dakota," "Whispering Moon," "Dreamwalk," and his acoustic version of "California Dreamin'" are my faves. I'd also highly recommend his other CDs--Vista, Natural Selections, Renaissance, and Openings.

This is my all-time favorite New Age recording. It is incredibly relaxing. Any of my friends who hear it want to know who the artist is and where they can get a copy. I misplaced it for a few years and was very sad because I could not remember the artist's name. I could only remember the rocks on the cover. I'm so glad I found it again.

If you like Narada music then you will most definitely enjoy this album! All the songs are great and true to the Narada label one of a kind. If you like solo guitar music then by all means get this CD.

A Real Find.......2000-01-08

This impressive Celtic band from the early 1980's featured former Bothy Band singer Triona Ni Dhomhnaill, and while one yearns to hear more of her vocals on this album it is all a joy to listen to from start to finish. The way her's and fellow singer Claudine Langille's vocals interact with on another on the magnificent track "Jack Haggerty" alone is worth the price of admission, and the rest of the album easily follows suit. Pity this Chapel Hill, North Carolina based band called it quits after their second album "Jealousy."

A thoroughly enjoyable album.......1999-04-30

The New Land by Touchstone is a delight for the ears from start to finish. Beginning with the Kilmoulis Jig and the Maid At The Spinning Wheel, the musical abilities of the group are evident, and the vocals on the later cuts are beautiful. I can think of few albums that combine romance, beauty, and joy as successfully as this one. I'd recommend it as a "must have" for any Celtic or folk lover.

(As an aside, this is also an excellent album to take with you if you are checking out stereo equipment, especially speakers. The Kilmoulis Jig starts with a mandolin solo that will highlight the speaker clarity and high-end response, then about a minute in, a bass line comes in strong to test those woofers. It's a great piece.)

Branching out.......2004-09-08

How you compare Jealousy with The New Land depends on your perspective. (I own both). The New Land is definitely more traditional, but there are scores of very good traditional Irish bands, so here Touchstone is trying to do something different. Of the 2, I like Jealousy better for a few reasons: 1) Production is a little better, better sound. 2) If this can be said to use the same "formula" as The New Land, it seems to be more refined. 3) New twists like Faoilean and White Snow - these foreshadow Triona's Nightnoise music, but without the New Age oversmoothness. 4) The addition of fiddler Skip Parente adds a lot. The one tune that seems out of place is the title track, which sounds like it was meant to be the "hit single" of the recording, but otherwise this is a strong outing. Another CD on the same lines would be Thunderhead by Dalglish and Larsen, on which Triona guests.

Not quite up to the standards of the debut.......2000-01-08

Adequate, but ultimately somewhat disappointing follow-up to the glorious debut "The New Land," Touchstone's second, and final, efforts suggests that the band may have run out of steam and ideas a little too quickly. Everything here is quite enjoyable, but if you are interested in this band, get "The New Land," first.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
