There were several fine jazz guitarists--Billy Bauer, Jimmy Raney, and Johnny Smith among them--who emerged in the late '40s and early '50s only to leave the spotlight within a few years. Tal Farlow, who died in 1998, stood out even among this gifted group, a brilliant musician who chose to spend much of his life working as a sign painter in North Carolina, playing locally and occasionally returning to the recording studios. On this 1956 session, Farlow led a trio with pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. The style of the group--without horns or drums--might be described as "chamber bop," relatively quiet music that swings mightily with complex and mutually supportive interaction, rhythmic verve and fluid invention. Farlow spins out stunning, seemingly effortless, lines of melody, both on bop tunes like Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite" and standards such as "Like Someone in Love." His overlapping exchanges with Costa--who possessed a Bud Powell-like fluency--are inspired. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars awe-inspiring.......2007-07-30

My Dad was a pro jazz musician (clarinet, alto, & tenor). By the time I was 15, I was well on my way to doing the same; that is, until one month we received an Lp called "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow." I never played reeds again. This was the first time I had ever hear bebop played on a guitar. It was 1957, & three months after I got my first guitar & amp, I was playing a regular gig with a jazz combo. I wore out the original LP.....now I have the CD version. If you play or love jazz guitar, buy this CD! 'nuff said. BTW, I met him a year before he died.

This a great collection..but you really can't go wrong with anything this man recorded!

If you haven't heard this guy, do yourself a favor, get this disc. It is real good listening, unique, he is really like no other - a must for any fan of guitar. Well done, a real nice addition to the library.

As a guitarrist I can tell you this CD is extraordinary. The first time I head it I was confussed, it was difficult for me to catch the songs. After a couple listenings I was able to understand and aprecciate the beauty of this album. This trio never stop, the energy and inventiveness in each song are unique. I strongly recommend this album to every guitarrist and jazz enthusiast. Outstanding tracks: "Yardbird suite", "They can't take that away from me" and "Taking a chance on love"

    5 out of 5 stars Guitar Great.......2006-11-10

Tal Farlow is the enigmatic genius of jazz guitar. His large hands and untutored approach mean he does things few others can do. This collection is a wonderful example of his playing, and is a clear, modern sounding recording. Listen to his use of harmonics on "I hear a rhapsody", the beautifully loose yet melodic treatment of Django Reinhardt's "Nuages", or the gentle "One for my baby". These alone are worth the price of the CD. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars jazz guitar.......2004-10-20

Rather than get into specific apects of style, there was an overriding meaning when we beginning players would talk about 'jazz' guitar: Fast, clean, and complexly, seemingly unendingly, inventive. We loved it, but we couldn't completely 'get' it. As we became more adept ourselves, many still-admired players lost their 'jazz' status in that regard. We finally 'got' them. Tal Farlow is still -the- jazz guitarist. No one yet completely 'gets' him, except that he always makes perfect sense.

    5 out of 5 stars Tal Farlow/Ed Fuerst Sessions.......2003-05-18

Tal Farlow's 1950's recordings are masterpieces of great ideas and great execution. His subtlety, sophistication, swing and drive make him one of the greatest jazz improvisers ever, regardless of instrument.
I first heard these recordings when they were issued on record in the 70's and they sound as great now as they did then.
I am also a guitarist, and I find it sad to believe that many young guitarists are not familiar with Tal's 1950's recordings. In the 70's most of his recordings were not available, and I had to chase them down. Young players do not have that excuse now. The material, such as this release, is available. The fact that I am the first one to review this release shows how unappreciated Tal is. Tal Lives!!!!!!

    Album Description

Some would describe Tal M. Klein's music as electronica, but on his latest effort, Alpha-Beats, he breaks from the formula, bringing forth emotions and unique sounds more often heard in genres like rock. "This isn't a beat collage," he explains.

Tal M. Klein, along with an impressive array of collaborators, wrote and produced all of the tracks on Alpha-Beats. Discussing the inspiration behind the album, he says, "This is me, an organic acoustical evolution that came from my experience as a musician and DJ." Aside from delivering Tal's trademark crunchy beats and funky grooves, Alpha-Beats (it has a track for every letter of the alphabet - get it?) is a welcome alternative to today's generally over-produced electronic music sound.

5 out of 5 stars has it really been three years?.......2004-12-28

time is a fickle judge of creativity. i had no idea what i was in for after i released "peace love beats". i went back into the studio and decided my next album would not be limited by genre, tempo, or style. i wanted to make something special, a cd full of surprises, and songs that bring out both groove and emotion. this is the end of the 'beats' trilogy, unfortunately, the first album in the series, "nicotine fits & analogue beats" is out of print, but Aniligital might re-release it if this album does well. Regardless, I hope that those of you who have been with me thus far as well as those who are new to my music will enjoy this latest offering; it's a trip hop rollercoaster!

He could play fast, but I like his lyricism on the ballads. Distinctive tone (partially having to do with guitar modifications is what I read in the Penguin Jazz Guide) and phrasing and some cool things I don't understand musically. I saw him perform on the National Council for the Traditional Arts' Masters of the Steel String Guitar tour nine or ten years ago. He was followed by Albert Lee (of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band) who said "How can I follow Tal Farlow? The only thing I can do is play louder".

5 out of 5 stars Another fine compilation of awesome guitar pieces..........2004-11-13

This disc gives you 73 minutes of Farlow, with a variety of sidemen, taken from records released between 1954-'56. If you like jazz guitar, you can't go wrong buying this. Farlow began playing for pay during World War II, and really showed his greatness on vinyl during the years represented on this CD. I also highly recommend "The Swingin' Guitar of Tal Farlow"---one track of that album is on this CD, but all 63 minutes of that record are superb. I'm not a player, so I can't tell you how Farlow produced his beautiful sounds, but I know what I like musically, and this is definitely what I like. Some songs are fast, some are slow, but none are just mood music, easy listening, or background sound. His crisp plucking and strumming and fingering reflects what must have been a keen intelligence. As the liner notes say, Farlow was not particularly in love with the guitar itself, but with the music, and the guitar was simply the instrument he played the best. Give him a try, if you are not familiar with his work.

    4 out of 5 stars Visionary guitarist.......2002-05-19

Recorded between 1954 and 1958, these tracks showcase this little-known electric guitarist. He was one of the first players to bring the electric guitar into the limelight as a stand-alone jazz instrument and all 16 of these tracks shine. In an era where the sax, trumpet and vibes dominated trios and larger groups, his unique voice was a unique alternative and a harbinger of the future of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest contemporary guitarist of the twentiest century!.......2000-07-05

What else can one say? This album is a great compilation of his early work. From the incredible chord melody of "Autumn in New York", to his interpretation of "Autumn Leaves", (Complete with his "A" string tuned down one octave).Everythings here. His blistering single note solos, single line harmonics, brilliant full rounded chords, and elusive harmonic sophistication. He even produces snare, brush, and bongo drum effects! Also looking for "Tal Farlow 78" album on disc. Also recommended is "This is Tal Farlow", and "The Swinging Guitar Of Tal Farlow"

His inventive brilliance lives on. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of his earlier recordings!.......1998-10-17

I've listened to alot of Tal's recordings, and I consider this CD to an outstanding representation of his best work. If I had to own only one CD of his, this would be it. It has tunes from his earlier '50s recordings, such as "The Tal Farlow Album", when his blistering single note runs were at their crispest. "Cherokee" is as fast as you can possibly get on a guitar -- I calculated 22 notes per second bursts based on the tempo of more than 300 quarter notes per minute. Smoo...kin! It also contains some ballads to give the listener a chance to wipe the sweat off his brow. Don't miss out on this one!
