Album Description
Although Miles Davis's health was quite weak at the time of this two-CD set (recorded the same day as the album Agharta), he has a few strong trumpet solos on these two very lengthy pieces ("Zimbabwe" and "Gondwana"). Just after these concerts, Miles would go into an almost six year hiatus from music. The music here is stunning with the dense ensembles and heated solos (Sonny Fortune on soprano, alto, and flute and the guitars of Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas) being quite boisterous, but very powerful. Pangaea is one of the finest recordings from the least-understood period of Davis's career (1971-1975).Customer Reviews:
Prepare to be floored.......2007-07-19
Before I continue, I would like to ask you to picture John Coltrane's Ascension, or something else beautifully chaotic along those lines. Now picture it without the loud, abrasive saxes and trumpets. Instead, picture it with screaming guitars, heavy polyrhythmic grooves, plenty of keyboards, and Miles Davis, arguably the most creative force of 20th century music, in the center of this maelstorm. Now picture the maelstorm lasting for close to an hour and a half, and you have a rough idea of what Pangaea sounds like. Since the '50s, Miles had favored long improvizations, but when he entered jazz fusion, they got longer and longer, to the point where compositions that lasted fifteen, twenty, sometimes thirty minutes in length. Well, these two pieces make even the longest of those songs seem tame: Zimbabwe (41:48) and Gondowan (46:33). For those keeping score, this is a double-album, and each of these songs takes up a disc of space. So if you're allergic to longer stuff, this music is not for you at all. Gondowan happens to be the longest recording I own, and you're talking to a guy who buys every live Allman Brothers album he can get his hands on.
So, how's the music itself? It's great. As I have often cited in my fusion reviews, Miles once said he could put together "the world's baddest rock band" (bad of course in the James Brown sense), and he sure proved his claim here. That band can PLAY! And it's obvious that they came from the "rock" side of the fence. Because they do just that: they rock. They rock slightly less harder than heaviest rock band you could name me, and they take a ton more risks than, say, AC/DC ever did. Hell, the whole ALBUM was a risk. On Zimbabwe, my favorite part of the album, they just blow me away. The song's loud, crude, nasty, dirty, not an easy listen, but a very rewarding one: Miles and Sonny Fortune shine, while Michael Henderson, Mtume, and Al Foster provide a tight polyrhythmic groove for Reggie Lucas and Pete Cosey to improvise over. It's cool is what it is. No other word for it. They somehow manage to sustain the piece for its forty minute length.
Now I think about ten minutes or so of Gondowan could have been cut, since it pretty much reiterates everything Zimbabwe said, and those last ten minutes do wander a bit, but I really like that song's sound too, so I can forgive it being just the slightest bit indulgent. The first thirty-five minutes really do meet the standards Zimbabwe set, it's just that it spins off into aimlessness slightly later. Which is why the album gets four stars.
Those looking for a pleasant live set of My Funny Valentine, So What, Walkin' and maybe an encore of Someday My Prince Will Come probably knew that Davis was long past that point, and if they didn't, they probably found out and left the concert venue as soon as they could (assuming that this album's sister set, Agartha, hadn't inspired them to already). Miles fans looking for such a set today are advised to pick up the My Funny Valentine/Four and More album - it's good, and it's traditional, so those with a bias against fusion will probably enjoy it more than they to Pangaea. But if you're a rock or funk fan who liked In a Silent Way, B*tches Brew or Jack Johnson and is looking for more, I can safely say this (and Agartha) will satisfy you.

OK, but not nearly as cohesive as "Agarta".......2007-05-09
the same event as "Agarta". But after one listening I didn't hear the intensity or emotion of the Agartha set. The music just kind of meandered along for the most part, with flashes of fire from Sonny Fortune on sax and Pete Cosey on guitar. Cosey was absolutely brilliant on Agarta, with a 4 minute+ solo on the first cut ("Prelude Part 1") that leaves me breathless and near tears every time I listen.
To be fair this session was so dense and layered it more than a few listenings to really hear and experience the riffing. I still hear new stuff every time I listen to Miles and that's what makes Miles electric period so good for me, so I'm glad I have "Pangaea" but I like Agarta better.
Trippy, melodic, and out there!.......2007-02-17
I heard it for the first time and I was in love.......2007-01-09

Worthwhile, but..........2004-02-28
There are plenty of reviews elsewhere about the brilliance of Miles Davis's Pangaea, so I'll keep these comments to the Japanese import version. Now this masterpiece has gotten a beautiful remastering treatment, and there's an unmistakable jump in sound quality from the US release I'd previously played to death. The bass is bigger, the percussion is fuller, the guitar wails are more well-defined, and there's a new clarity to everything. Soft parts and nuances that were barely audible on the previous CD edition are now discernible, and this spine-tingling sensory journey to remote savannahs and exotic jungles is brought to colorful life as never before. E.g.: for one section in mid-"Gondwana" you can hear the band verbally egging Miles on during one of his rare solos, which hadn't even been audible before.
Other pluses: the cardboard package replicates the original LP sleeve, for those interested in that kind of thing. (There's nothing in the way of new credits or liner notes, just a montage of landscape pictures and color shots of Miles onstage. There's a note along one side suggesting you "listen to this record at highest possible volume," which of course I heartily recommend too.) "Gondwana" is three minutes longer than it was on the US disc as well; the extension is nothing earth-shattering, but I just have to wonder why anything was trimmed in the first place.
If you want to experience Pangaea at its fullest you'll (fortunately or unfortunately) really benefit from hearing this edition sometime. If you're not quite obsessed, only curious or just not willing to shell out a price that would rival some big boxsets, then let's just hope someone makes it easier and cheaper to find soon. As it is, this version's unavailability is a real shame.

New album drops October 3rd, and before then I thought I should review this album........2006-07-20
Stay underground 4 life and be true and love everyone and everything.
When October comes you better go out and buy the new album, and I bet that you won't be disappointed because the first single sounds really chill and until October 3rd, later. If you are from LA, and you like this you better be going to Rock The Bells.
One of the best hip hop crews out!.......2005-11-09
I like this group (even the underground) because of this album.......2005-10-14
When I started listening to the album, the first 8-9 tracks were very accessible, even to the novice underground listener, but I remember thinking it gets a little shaky once the track count hits double digits.
Infact, since I didn't even know about the Living Legends, "Meeting of the Minds" sounded ok, but really long at the time. However though, after a year and a half, that's probably my favorite track on the album. (As the reviewer 'A music fan' mentions, this track 'pretty much pays for the album' ...I agree...)
Even after owning this album for a while, I still love listening to "Strike" and "DoMakeSayThink."
Overall, I believe the album is solid and very accessible to people that's never heard of the Visionaries. I would suggest this over 'Galleries' or 'Sophomore Jinx' if you are contemplating about getting their work.
Good album could have been better.......2005-09-29

An undiscovered masterpiece.......2000-03-23
Fans of Asian music, in particular, will find a lot here to enjoy. Flutes, koto, and other ethnic instruments flavor this CD while the melodic content is lush and romantic enough for mainstream listeners. All in all, PANGAEA is a masterpiece. It is perfect for playing in the background during massage or bodywork or while reading or doing housework. Personally, I just sit and listen to it when I'm stressed out and I ususlly always come away refreshed.
Finally, the cover art is gorgeous and liner notes do a good job explaining the concept of the supercontinent. With all that plus the great music on the CD, what else could you ask for?

Album Description
Breaking Pangaea was born in the greater Philadelphia metro area in the late nineties. The dynamic marriage of BP's soaring guitars and sweeping vocals is reminiscent of Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason and even a hint of New Found Glory. The band's powerful live performance is marked by the tremendous amount of energy and emotion pouring from every pore of the trio while onstage. After hundreds of shows, including tours with Coheed & Cambria and Further Seems Forever, and two releases on Florida based Undecided Records, the band crossed paths with Equal Vision Records. Eager to work with each other, the band and EVR formulated a plan to release an EP consisting entirely of rock songs. The EP, entitled Phoenix, was recorded at Big Blue Meenie studios (Thursday, Taking Back Sunday) in New Jersey during November 2002. With plans for non-stop touring in support of the release, including stints with Hey Mercedes and Elliott, the indie-rock world will embrace the band with open arms.Customer Reviews:
The Worst Part is..........2003-12-08
really into the music which I loved, and the have the essential
front man (Fred) who can sing bitter sweet verses and play
an awsome lead guitar.
The EP Phoenix wasn't as stand out as their live act, but one will find that songs such as "Worst Part" and "Picture Perfect"
are hard to get out of your head. The most stand out moment of the EP is the song "Phoenix" which shows the true song writing
capability of the band (especially the solo section).
