The prolific veteran continues to cover a lot of musical territory on an album that resonates with the sound of his glory years of the mid-to-late 1970s. On the first two songs, Parker recalls his breakthrough with Dylanesque phrasing on "I Discovered America" before flashing forward to the current state of British pop celebrity on "England's Greatest Clown." There's his trademark sardonicism in the socially-conscious singalongs of "Ambiguous" and "Stick to the Plan," while other highlights include songs of resilience ("Suspension Bridge," "Hard Side of the Rain") and redemption ("Somebody Saved Me"). At almost eight-and-a-half minutes, "The Other Side of the Reservoir" is epic by Parker's standards, as he follows Van Morrison into the mystic. The closing "All Being Well" could pass as a traditional Irish benediction. With arrangements largely built around Parker's acoustic guitar, the predominantly midtempo material doesn't rock as hard as Parker has, but the hooks sink deep into the soul. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars McCartney Sells Millions and ..........2007-07-25

Oh us Parker fans are a loyal bunch. What kills me is I actually do like the new Paul McCartney release, "Memory Almost Full," but listen carefully. The first hit, "Dance Tonight" could have been written by a 6 year old...."Everybody gonna' dance tonight, everybody gonna' feel alright" ... and what absolutely FLOORS me is everyone claims this McCartney release is his best in years! It's great claims ... blah, blah, blah and every other magazine and source available. What frustrates me is Graham Parker puts out another excellent, balanced release with meaningful lyrics and good music to boot and Paul is the hero. On "Struck by Lightning," one of my old mellow favorites, Graham released a song called, "Brand New Book," which had the line, "The words came out, not twist & shout, that's not what a grown man writes about ..." Well, Paul will sell millions of "Memory Almost Full" on the strength of "Dance Tonight" while Graham continues to pump out solid, cohesive cd's. I'm done whining, but Graham will always be a guilty pleasure. This CD rates up there with his best. I'm not bashing Paulie but his new music is basically ..... "Twist & Shout." Rock on Graham!

Typically pointed lyrics, catchy tunes, this is one of Graham's finer efforts of recent vintage. One of the great singer/songwriters near the top of his game ...

Outstanding effort! I have been listening to this in my car, on my IPOD and even on my home stereo. I think Parker has definitly hit the jackpot with this effort.

As usual another great producion by a long accomplished artist. Graham is one of the greatest and "Don't Tell Columbus" proves it again. It is one of those recordings that grows on you and you will enjoy it more and more as time goes on.

This 1978 live album remains a serious contender for one of the best live rock albums ever etched, standing toe to toe with live classics from the Band, Allman Brothers, and the Who. Recorded during concerts in London and Washington, D.C., Waiting for Columbus vividly captures the L.A. sextet at a crossroads between its swampy mid-'70s fusion of blues, country, and New Orleans R&B, and the more eclectic jazz accents introduced later in the decade. If the late Lowell George's influence had diminished in the studio, his presence dominates here in rowdy, righteous vocals, the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar, and a set-list laced with his songs. While still riveting in its initial, abridged CD release, this remastered two-disc edition expands and resequences the songs into a full concert set, with encore. Two deleted tracks are further augmented by 10 additional performances to make this a definitive edition of a classic album that really will "boogie your speakers away." --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Little Feat: "Waiting for Columbus" Listener Review.......2007-06-27

I write this review as someone who holds a music degree from the oldest music conservatory in California - which simply means I spent a lot of time and years of my life learning to perform and recognize good music. This album is good music. I learned of Little Feat from a business colleague, and I am hooked. It is blues, it is rock, it is country rock, it is cajun: take your pick - but these tunes are all well written and well performed in a live setting. As a huge Tower of Power fan, it doesn't hurt that the famous TOP horn section is prominent on several cuts, with tenor sax solos courtesy of Lenny Pickett (the wild-looking band leader on Saturday Night Live who hits all of those really high notes on sax!). Call it old school if you must, but as a guy who just edged his way into baby boomer territory, it is new, fresh and exciting. I love this band for the same reasons I still love to listen to the great classical composers...the music is relevent.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential live concert with all the trimmings..........2007-04-29

If you're a Little Feat fan, you already know what this is about. If you're discovering them for the first time, consider this a necessary listen. Little Feat found their own space with an approach that took the relaxed, earthy, and often humorous elements of southern rock and married them to R&B, progressive, even jazz like sophistication. The result in a live venue is a wildly exciting and just plain fun concert that captures Little Feat at their best. The live versions of their songs are supercharged and embellished with occasional detours that keep them fresh without ever detracting from their studio counterparts, perhaps even supplanting a few. The recording quality of the remastered/extended release is excellent. Close your eyes and consider this a front row seat to some superb southern cookin' by a band that had no equal at the time.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for Columbus.......2007-01-29

This recording is a MUST for Little Feat Fans...it reveals just how tight this band was with Lowell George in a live recording...

5 out of 5 stars The BEST LIVE ALBUM I'VE EVER HEARD!!!!.......2007-01-18

I wasn't a "Feat" fan, back in '78 or'79. I won this album in a radio station giveway! They handed it to me & I thought: Who are these guys?
I put it on & couldn't believe my ears!!
5 stars!!??? That's 'way too few!
I was hooked immediately! There is nothing like the energy on this album anywhere I've heard. I now own around 3200 cds & a good number of them are "live" albums...NOTHING compares to this performance!
I used to shuttle cars across the country & this was my ESSENTIAL tape that HAD to come; everything else changed but this... This album is special!
It was originally a double album & they clipped off one tune to make it fit ( Apolitical Blues, I believe) Too bad. every song, every note on this album is pure excitement & joy!
They even have the TOWER OF POWER horn Section sit in on a few tunes & a few famous friends show up to sing backup.
Little Feat has gone on to produce umpteen fabulous albums, many since Lowell Goerge passed (again, TOO BAD- He was simply amazing!) Anyway, Little Feat still tours today with much the same lineup as in the days of old. They still rock & they still put out excellent studio & live albums I ought to know- I now own almost all of them. But friends... This is the album. THIS Is the LIVE album against with you will measure all others; and all others will pale by comparison!

5 out of 5 stars Clyde's Tavern.......2007-01-03

During my five and a half year undergraduate career at Appalachian State this recording was played more than any other at Clyde's Tavern in Blowing Rock, NC. The addition of the second CD just makes the best live rock and roll recording twice as good.

Amazon.com essential recording

Few rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, capture the band in all its rowdy, precise glory. The late Lowell George's influence had been damped down in the studio, deferring to his bandmates' writing and singing, but Columbus is dominated by his gruff, lyrical vocal presence and the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar. With the Tower of Power Horns aboard to inject razor-sharp horn work, this romp through the Feat songbook of southern-fried rock represents a satisfying summation of the band's best works, every bit as engaging as their studio models. This is simmering, smart music measured by an honor roll of great songs with no lapses. The only caveat--and a minor one--is the deletion of two tracks to squeeze the original two LPs onto a single CD. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Feats, Do Yo' Stuff.......2006-07-26

This is certainly one of the best live rock albums ever recorded, though I wouldn't say the best. (I don't think it knocks out Live At Leeds by The Who, The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East, or even Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out by The Rolling Stones - much less Hendrix at Monterey Pop.) Still, when you combine Little Feat at their peak (Lowell George above ground) with the Tower Of Power horns, you know you've got a red-hot evening on your hands. This CD delivers - and then some.

There's a lot of hand-wringing out there about two songs from the original 2-LP set being dropped to squeeze the concert onto one CD, Don't Bogart That Joint and A Apolitical Blues. Yikes. Don't Bogart That Joint was a cheap, embarrassing song when this was released, now it's just stupid. A Apolitical Blues is a great and witty number but readily available elsewhere if you need it that badly. Fans who require every squeal and stomp of this show should burn their bucks on the new, 2-CD reissue, complete with wave after wave of extraneous flotsam and jetsam.

The concert is fast out of the gate, Fat Man In The Bathtub was always one of Feat's best songs and it comes on so strong you can almost feel the audience lifting off the ground. Old Folks' Boogie grinds slow with a groove that really gets inside you. At this point the jams get longer and tend towards self-indulgence. Spanish Moon, Dixie Chicken, and Tripe Face Boogie are all great but the treatments here wander far and wee around the barnyard with inconsistent results.

Rocket In My Pocket is one of the absolute best while Willin' - though it's signature George - feels obligatory and out of place. Sailin' Shoes reads a little like one would need to be sailing to "get" it. Fortunately the show closes out in grand fashion with Feats Don't Fail Me Now, a real gottago kind of track. Despite these and other inconsistencies, Waiting For Columbus truly is a wonderful CD, and a great introduction to Little Feat.

5 out of 5 stars 2 LOST SONGS ARE FOUND..........2006-02-27

I agree that Waiting For Columbus is all the previous reviewers have said and then some. Concerning the original CD release, I was a little miffed at the idea of 2 great songs being left off to create a 1 CD package- but fear not my fellow audiophiles- you can find them as bonus songs on "The Last Record Album" by The Feats- along with a silly "Bonus Announcement". I also purchased the New Rhino CD upgrade of WFC back when it first came out. Has a lot of good extra stuff on it. Highly recommended listening pleasure. So there you have it- now quit your griping about left out songs. But I do agree- they should have put them on the original CD in the first place. Probaly had something to do with the 74 minute CD length at the time.

5 out of 5 stars NO SMALL FEAT!.......2005-10-28

This is the premiere all around "live" or "greatest hits" collection by the original Little Feat, featuring the late and also great Lowell George. A crowd pleasing mix of folk, funk, country, blooze, boogie woogie, and rock, Feat was always at their bizarre best in a concert setting. From a nine minute "Dixie Chicken" jam, to rollicking workouts on staples "Oh Atlanta", "Fat Man in the Bathtub", and "Feats Don't Fail Me Now", you just won't find a finer party in a package. Kudos to the lead vocal work of guitarist Paul Barrere and pianist Bill Payne, proving Lowell George wasn't their only interesting singer and the righteous Tower of Power horn section, who joined in on the fun fest. A minor quibble: The short track "Don't Bogart That Joint" (an old Fraternity of Man ditty) and the funky "Apolitical Blues" from the original double LP have been omitted on this single CD. Even so, "Waiting For Columbus" stands head and Feat above almost all other concert recordings. RATING: FIVE FEAT UP

5 out of 5 stars a live set of boogie rock magic, southern flavored.......2005-04-28

this cd might be obsolete with the introduction of the newly expanded version, but i don't have that one so I won't review it. This cd is intense and awesome, often cited as one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. And it does hold up since the 70's, with great tunes that are perfectly played and wonderfully arranged. this is boogie rock that is extremely polished, with synths and bongos giving it a party-rock atmosphere. A great live document to a very underappreciated band; just pop it in and enjoy. There isn't a weak moment on here.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Live Albums Ever.......2002-09-24

My cassette of WAITING FOR COLUMBUS is even better than the original CD because it features two songs not on the first CD version. I have the studio versions of many of the songs, but some of the live versions feature slightly different lyrics and arrangements. This, along with concert recordings by the Allmans, Outlaws, Skynyrd, Nugent, UFO, and some others, is one of the quintessential live albums of all time. A worthy addition to any rock fan's library.

This remarkable release, comprising two CDs and a book of 270 pages with information in Spanish, English, German, Italian, Catalan, Arabic, and Hebrew, is a veritable history lesson in music, poetry, and literature about Spain, as well as Christopher Columbus and his voyages and times. The title of the set, Lost Paradises, refers to the cessation of the period during which all three traditions - Jewish, Muslim and Christian - worked together to create greatness. The music, pre-baroque and sounding very exotic indeed, is exquisitely performed, sometimes by itself and sometimes in conjunction with the reading of a text. The Moorish and Sephardic music is particularly colorful, but the more familiar, "early" music is just as ravishing. With repertoire both sacred and profane, featuring dances and dirges, Savall, in his notes, is attempting to make us pay heed to the past so that we may form our futures: This isn't as pedantic as it sounds, but it is certainly more than an afternoon of great music listening. What a stunning gift this would make - either to yourself or others. --Robert Levine

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic concert.......2007-01-02

regardless of what the rest of you are saying, this show is amazing. the llama simply makes me want to cry, its so powerful and explosive. it will melt your face. on top of that, it is a superb set, including golgi, rift, maze, and stash (just a few of my favorites). moving on, the second disc is just ridiculous. everything from 2001 to weekapaug runs into eachother. given, the simple isnt as tight, but the song choices alone should be motivation enough to purchase this. the icculus makes references to the NBA finals which were happening this same night (plus, its ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS). Hmm, what else? The man who stepped into yesterday is a very pretty rendition, and the fluffhead is spectacular. Carolina and My sweet one are done without mics, which is a real treat. the last disc also has great songs, i need not say more. if you do not like this show, i will fight you. that is not a threat, it is a promise

3 out of 5 stars decent show, not the best.......2006-04-26

i personally think this show is sort of a disapointment, im a huge phan of the 94 years of phish, but this show just seems to be lacking, though its a great first set, the seccond set seems to be a bit sloppy, treys guitar seems to be a tiny bit out of tune durring sample in a jar, and the big ball jam sort of sounds like its held together by fishman's drums, although it has a great fluffhead on the seccond set, i wouldent go out of your way to get this live phish cd, though it has its moments like any phish show

4 out of 5 stars 3 discs filled with great music..........2005-07-30

    HIGHLIGHTS
disc 1: "llama" of course has some cool guitar riffs, "gumbo" has a sweet guitar and piano solo that ends up going into a great "maze" filled with (as always) some kicka** solos, after that comes a personal favorite of mine, "if i could i would", which includes a beautiful solo by page, another piano solo in "scent of a mule", the "stash" is about 11 minutes long and the set then ends with "golgi apparatus"

disc 2: this disc is unlike any other entire disc by phish that i have listened to.. set 2 (disc 2) starts out with a fairly short "2001" (4:46) which goes right into "mike's song" and starts one of the longest mike's grooves out there, that then goes into an instrumental "simple" that's 3 minutes long which very sleakily trey takes it and makes it "catapult", which then goes back into "simple", this time with words (this is also when they start to get a little goofy); this then goes into the most hilarious "icculus" ever (one that makes me laugh hard every time i listen to it), this then goes back into 2 minutes of "simple"... (i needed to break up this part of the review somehow, thus the "...", although the music doesn't stop)...right from "simple" is a minute of "mike's song", which flows nicely into a peaceful "i am hydrogen".. at this point it gets real chilled.. until it goes into a short, 3 1/2 minute "weekapaug groove" , then when "wg" turns into "tmwsiy", it almost seems that they knew this would happen all along and this is one of those special moments for me .. then, something provokes them to play thee traditional "avenu malcanu", which turns right back to where they left off in "tmwsiy" which gets funky towards the end and goes into a kick***, 14 1/2 minute "fluffhead".. at the end of "fluffhead" it goes silent for awhile and the disc ends with "my sweet one", although it's hard to hear

disc 3: still set 2, disc starts out with "big ball jam", then goes into goes into a 10 minute "jjlc" a couple more songs to close out the show (not to be negative or to bring down this show at all, but the encore is the worst i have heard)and then a filler added that includes an awesome "antelope" that goes on for about 20 minutes

all in all, definitely a great show to have, and if you just wanna sit, chill, and have a good time, pop in disc 2...

i have spent a good amount of time reviewing as i have been listening to this show and i hope that my review has been helpful in some way

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-02-23

I have almost every live Phish release to date. I recently added 10 to my collection, and I was amazed. The first two disc of this release are absolutely unbelieveable. They only stop playing for one song on the second set. TMWSIY I think really brings alot to this show. And the Weekapaug, I mean seriously its absolutely rediculous. I HIGHLY RECOMEND this set next to live 13 and 6.

    3 out of 5 stars OHH PLEASE.......2005-01-24

what the hell is wrong with you people? this cd is terrible someone said the jams are extra tight???? it sounds as if no one knows what the hell is going on, the vocals arent loud enough (not that thats a bad thing!) neither is the guitar the guitar solos are good but ALWAYS seem out of key, the songs are boring and the lyrics are stupid. one thing i dont under stand is why they even have a keyboard player wow hes horrible. now dont get me wrong i like phish but get A LIVE ONE its alot better sound quality songs a jams and keyboard player is accually bareable to listen to.

    4 out of 5 stars A very good soundtrack!!.......2007-03-26

Many years ago, I caught Goodbye Columbus on TV and immediately took to it. It is a great commentary on 1950s-era Jewish social sensiblities in Greater New York. The soundtrack, which is largely the work of The Association, captures the essence of the movie and its proverbial July-September romance.

5 out of 5 stars Almost Completely Flawless.......2007-06-26

This performance is not only the most heavy and hard rocking show of Pearl Jams 2000 tour its the most flawless. Its quite amazing that a band can put on a show of 28 songs and only make ONE mistake! In the song Leatherman singer Ed Vedder messes up the lyrics a bit. Thats it. Other than that the show is as close to flawless as it comes. The whole band was on fire that night. Not to mention the setlist was very strong and pretty long. This show is full of heavy songs and really no nonsense. Its a tight performance all the way through. The show contains fantastic takes on Breakerfall, Whipping, Spin the Black Circle, Dissident, Nothing As It Seems, Grievance, State Of Love and Trust, Once, Last Exit, Porch, and Last Kiss. All of those songs are played better than usual and are amongst the best recorded for that tour. I cant forget Nothingman...my God Eds voice is awesome. This version is so freaking good. His voice is the best here. Its a lot better than the studio version. The sound quality is also one of the best. Eds voice is up front with a middle layer of guitars, and a back wall of bass and drums. The way most people like it. The show really has nothing going against it. This is an incredible performance and is promised to please any PJ fan out there. If anyone still wants one of the best shows from Pearl Jams 2000 tour, please get this. You most certainly will NOT regret it.

    5 out of 5 stars #38 in a series.......2007-01-28

A great introduction to the bootleg series(It was the first one I purchased.)A fierce performance of Breakerfall gets the ball rolling, followed by a set that seems to focus on the albums Vitalogy, No Code, Yield and Binaural. While this may be bad news for those who are more interested in hearing the band play a "greatest hits" set, Virtually every song is played note perfect(I have listened to this set countless times and have yet to hear a single musical flaw) without sounding robotic.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' at the Ohio State University.......2004-11-06

Out of roughly a dozen 2000 shows I currently own, this is the most energetic setlist by a longshot, and the band is up to the task. While it lacks the standard beautiful opener, such as Release or Long Road, they instead plow right ahead through several of their best hard rock songs- Breakerfall, Whipping, StBC, Hail Hail, Corduroy- all flawless. The energy segues perfectly into In My Tree, off of No Code- probably the best version of the song I've ever heard. Also present from that album is the first encore song, Present Tense. State of Love and Trust is a nice surprise, and nearly 10 years after the song's inception, the band still does it justice. The set ends with two songs 'real' PJ fans despise, Last Kiss and Yellow Ledbetter, but I like 'em both and the performances are solid.

No PJ show is without its flaws, and in this case, Leatherman and Nothingman are butchered to the point of unlistenability. Even so, for those who like to ROCK... this one's a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars A College Crowd Full of Rockers.......2001-11-02

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. In this performance in Columbus, Pearl Jam really shake out the mid-tour blahs and deliver one of the heaviest and most rocking shows of the entire tour. This set was preceded by several so-so performances, and a real disaster the previous night in Cincinnati, but here the band really gets their groove going again. Unlike most of the shows in the tour, this set does not open with a slow tension-builder, but starts off with some of the fastest and heaviest PJ songs possible - "Breakerfall," "Whipping," "Spin the Black Circle," and "Hail Hail." Without a break, the band then zooms into the inevitable "Corduroy," which is followed by a real surprise with "In My Tree." Eddie Vedder correctly deduces that this crowd is full of college students, and the band rocks them into submission without apologies. This set is much lower on ballads than usual, although there are great renditions of "Nothing As It Seems" and the rare "Present Tense." For those PJ fans who don't want to buy too many of these crazy bootlegs, this is a great one for anybody looking for a pile-driving performance without too much nonsense or noodling. Oddly enough for such a heavy performance, this gig is the only one out of 47 total shows in America that does not contain "Even Flow." Go figure.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work.......2001-09-03

I've only listened to the first cd so far, and this is absolutely golden work.
I own Ten and Vs. Will buy more more pearl jam when I get the money. I love Ten, and haven't really sunken into Vs yet. This show instantly caught my attention, even though I'd never heard most of the songs on here. Great work
I'm kicking myself for missing this concert (with sonic youth) last year. No way in hell I'll miss it when PJ goes on tour again (next year), if ever. If you get the chance, see this band live, until then the bootlegs are the next best things (better than studio albums)

Doc Powell has always been one of my favorite guitarists and I was not disappointed with this CD. I enjoy his renditions of "Breezin" and "What's Going On", as well as the songs "Ode To Chet" and "Two Hearts". "Two Hearts" reminds me somewhat of his great cut "Charlene" from the Laid Back CD.

    4 out of 5 stars I waited and waited........I wasn't disappointed.......2003-04-22

Let me share my bias first. Doc Powell's recordings have caught my attention for years. Not because he was my favorite vocalist's guitarist for many years, but because his tunes caught my ear when I would put the Smooth Jazz station from DirecTV on at home. His tunes always made for nice background music.

This CD engages you. Several different sytles including Doc's homage to several other well known artists, George Benson, Marvin Gaye and EW&F. The title track should do very well on radio but the meat to this CD are the rest of the other tunes. Now if only I could visit 97th & Columbus. Until then, this CD will do just fine!

4 out of 5 stars Mostly minor, mostly attractive, early Wagner.......2004-08-06

This is an interesting and worthwhile disk of Wagner rarities, offering the _Rienzi_, _König Enzio_, _Das Liebesverbot_, _Die Feen_, _Christolph Columbus_ and _Faust_ overtures.

These are mostly minor pieces, and mostly attractive, as well as being fascinating products of a brash young genius learning his trade. The _Rienzi_ overture is the best-known piece, and perhaps the least "minor". Still, the best piece here is probably the _Faust_ overture. This tautly dramatic piece imitates Beethoven and Weber, as Wagner does in most of his early work, but also establishes an interesting darkness in harmony, and reveals skill in building up tension, which shows Wagner starting to find his own voice. Wagner said that it was with the _Faust_ overture that he first "became Wagner", and he was right. (By the way the cover gives the Faust overture's timing as 12 minutes, 19 seconds. Actually it's 12' 15". It's not that there are four seconds of music missing from the CD; it's just a misprint.)

The best disk of early Wagner overtures I know is from a two-CD set by Marek Janowski. One CD, with the French Radio Phil, offers mainstream Wagner excerpts from _Tannhäuser_, _Tristan_, _Lohengrin_ and _Meistersinger_, plus _Siegfried Idyll_, all very well played. But disk 2, with the London Symphony Orchestra, offers some rarities: the _Kaisermarsch_, the _Faust Overture_, the _Huldigungsmarsch_, the _Die Feen_ overture, the _American Centennial March_ and the _Das Liebesverbot_ overture. Janowski's may be the best account of the _Faust_ overture (also performed by Rahbari on this Naxos disk) that I know of. Janowski also offers better versions of the _Die Feen_ and _Das Liebesverbot_ overtures, while the versions in the Sawallisch complete recordings of these two early Wagner operas are better still. But the Rahbari/Malaga Phil performances of each of these pieces are still perfectly satisfactory in every way.

And, still with other performances of Wagner rarities, the world premier recording of the _König Enzio_ overture, also on this Naxo disk, was released in 2001 by the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Chemnitz under Oleg Caetani. That also offers a better performance than the Malaga Phil under Rahbari, though Rahbari and crew are perfectly good. The Caetani disk is worth having not only for the _König Enzio_ overture, which at the time wasn't available elsewhere, but also for the original version of Wagner's Prelude to Tannhäuser_ Act III, which is longer and more complex, and in my opinion better, than the better known, later, version. In more familiar territory the Caetani disk also offers a rattling good _Fliegende Holländer_ overture, and good performances of the _Lohengrin_ Acts I and III preludes, the _Tannhäuser_ overture, a "Walkürenritt" and the _Meistersinger_ overture.

So where Rahbari and the Malaga Phil duplicate these earlier disks, the performances are good but not quite as good. But this is still a great collection of Wagner rarities, on which every piece is well played.

Moreover, as far as I know Rahbari offers the only performance of the _Christolph Columbus_ overture on the market. This is an attractive piece, with a lot of heroic trumpeting about and a couple of "bold mariner" type themes, competently handled by the young Wagner. By the way, Cosima's Diary notes that Wagner once heard Rubinstein playing an arrangement of Mendelsohnn's _Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage_ overture, and remarked [quote from memory], "that's my _Christolph Columbus_ overture! What a thief I was as a young man!"

While I'd agree with Wagner that his younger self pinched ideas from all over the place, and the older composer was still prepared to help himself to the odd good thing, on this particular occasion I think Wagner accused himself falsely. Both overtures are excellent, but they are two independent pieces of music.

I strongly recommend this disk, especially at the Naxos price, to people wanting to explore some early, mostly minor but mostly attractive, Wagner.

    Cheers!
