5 out of 5 stars Masters Indeed.......2007-06-14

This is the best of the acoustic guitar anthologies that I have listened to over the years. The styles vary, a bit of blues, flamenco, folk, modern classical, etc, which guarantees it will keep your interest. There are some fine melodies, interesting variations, and of course fine playing and sound quality throughout. If you are curious about what contemporary acoustic guitarists are up to, this is a wonderful place to start.

Favorites: Cornwall, Classical Soul, Road Scholar, Muir Woods, but most of the pieces are very memorable, and I still come back to this album, an old friend yet still fresh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.........2002-08-22

Stephen Bennet on a Dyer Harp guitar, Pat Kirtley's bell-like guitar work. If this is your genre, it does not get much better than this...varied and surprising. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars A sound compilation........2000-05-30

This is well done....not the BEST compilation guitar finger-style CD, but worthy.

5 out of 5 stars A tasty sampling of six string sweetness........1999-10-30

This CD nearly made me sell my acoustic guitar. I mean, why even try right? "Sad little girl" maybe one of the prettiest melodies ever written. This song makes you want to trek through some lovely woods on a fall day to a log cabin, where you sip warm apple cider beside a fire as the sunsets and soothing melodies envelope you. This cd warms and awakens my soul in a way that no musical selection ever has before. This is a must get, especially for guitar buffs, but for anyone who enjoys beautiful melody and technical proficiency.

5 out of 5 stars Recording quality superb, perfectly balanced. Fantastic!.......1999-08-10

I bought this album because I am a fan of Leo Kottke, and because I had heard of Billy McLaughlin and Eric Tingstad. What I discovered was a group of unbelievably talented guitarists I'd never heard of such as Don Ross, Bill Mize, Pat Kirtley (my personal favorites in this particular album). Every song in this album, without exception, is a keeper. I went out the next week looking for more albums like this. I'm hooked!

Album Description

The mesmerizing power and beauty of acoustic guitar is amply displayed on Acoustic Heart 2 (released on Shanachie Entertainment June 29, 2004), a collection of extraordinary performances by such acoustic guitar masters as Peter White, Earl Klugh, Alex de Grassi, Artie Traum and many others. A surprising highlight is Pat Metheny's version of the Norah Jones hit "Don't Know Why." Metheny, who is known as a wizard of electric guitar, turns in a subtle, moving version of one of the past year's biggest hits. Following the successful approach of the previous volume of Acoustic Heart, this new compilation delivers plenty of passion and romantic feeling amidst an often-dazzling display technique. As noted by celebrated acoustic guitarist Artie Traum, who compiled the album along with Jeff Heiman, the tracks often have an almost orchestral quality--even though most of them feature only solo acoustic guitar.

The list of artists featured on Acoustic Heart 2 is a veritable "who's who" of acoustic guitar masters. It also demonstrates the universality of the instrument; represented on Acoustic Heart 2 are artists from Hawaii, Algeria, England, France and America, reflecting the reality that impressive acoustic guitar music is being made on every continent and has been for some time. Interestingly, the artists on Acoustic Heart 2 have made their names in a variety of genres--jazz, world, new age, folk and rock music. Laurence Juber, for instance, first made his mark as a member of Paul McCartney and Wings. Pat Metheny, an electric guitar icon in the fusion jazz world, had never recorded with acoustic guitar until he made the album that contains "Don't Know Why" last year. Artie Traum along with his brother Happy, has been a staple of the folk and singer/songwriter circuit for years. He also has had success in the contemporary jazz world, scoring a #l contemporary jazz radio hit in l994. Alex de Grassi came to prominence in the first wave of "new age" music, one of a handful! of guitarists who created a whole new style for acoustic guitar.

There is nothing like the pure sound of an acoustic guitar. This is simple, clear, honest and real strumming and picking. You get lost in the vibrations of those strings. Let your imagination take wing!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Starter!.......2004-07-30

This CD isn't the best anything. It's just a good starter cd for the new Blues listener, and a good listen for the more experienced. So I'll rate it a good. It probably deserves three stars but I'm a sucker for slide guitar so I gave it four.

4 out of 5 stars Another good sampler.......2003-12-07

This is another fine entry in Rhino's lengthy Blues Masters series. It isn't the definitive word on slide guitar blues, of course, or on any of the artists represented, but as a sampler it works very well, featuring a lesser-known (but very good) rendition of "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James, and well-chosen cuts by Muddy Waters, J.B. Hutto (the tough boogie "Too Much Alcohol"), and Robert Nighthawk (a superb medley of two of his best songs, "Anna Lee" and "Sweet Black Angel").

The compilers at Rhino have included the Allman Brothers' version of Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" rather than the original, "Shake Your Moneymaker" by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Canned Heat's take on "Rollin' And Tumblin'"...I would probably have gone with McTell's own "Mama T'Ain't Long Fo' Day", which is one of the most beautiful acoustic slide guitar blues tunes you'll ever hear, but that's just me.

Robert Johnson is missing, and Son House is, too, but the compilers try to make amends by including some lesser-known tracks which should appeal to the experienced blues fan, like James Williamson's "Homesick's Shuffle", Babe Turner's "I Am The Black Ace", Earl Hooker's "If You Ever Seen A One-Eyed Woman Cry", the harsh "Treat Me The Way You Do" by Joe Carter, and a rare opportunity to hear Chuck Berry wielding the slide on the odd instrumental "Deep Feeling". And the awesome Blind Willie Johnson is here as well, performing the eerie "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground".

Very good. But its companion volume, Blues Masters Vol. 18, is actually even better.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......1998-10-17

This is must buy for any fan slide guitar. From beginning to end, from Elmore James to Johnny Winter, it's non-stop blues. You'll find yourself hitting the repeat button on the CD player, so you can hear the great blues slide guitar again.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow....soothing....I love acoustic! .......2005-09-07

As an 'acoustic junkie', this CD is great. It is so relaxing and so beautiful. I have fallen asleep to this.....
True talent. Mellow, soft and pleasing to the ear. This is a CD I would play for my children if I had any. So for now, the pets have to suffer through it. So, if you are looking for a soothing acoustic CD, check this one out. Play some of the samples, and I believe you'll enjoy it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2004-11-03

Very enjoyable original riffs. Mellow, without being catatonic. No fake synth backgrounds, thank God. Just plain, raw talent, and pleasing sounds. Expect to get at least six or seven useable tracks, more if you aren't as ridiculously picky as I am. If you like the samples, you won't be disappointed with the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Intimates Sounds from Hearts.......2003-06-25

This is the first guitar album I have and I am glad it serves well as an introduction to how soothing and romantic guitar music can be.

Artie Traum started the CD project with Jeff Heiman in 1996 to put together "a compilation of the most romantic acoustic guitar music of the past ten years." They set the criteria for this album that "all the songs had to be romantic and deeply felt." All the selected fifteen pieces inside the CD show that they did a good compilation job as each delivers intimate sounds from a guitarist's heart, penetrating the audience's ears and touching their hearts.

For me, the piece I like most is Peppino D'Agostino's "Goodbye Robbie," which depicts well the feeling and concern about a good friend going away. Brian Hughes' "Sleeping Angles" and Peter White "By Candlelight" are very romantic, suitable to put them on when in the companion of a lover. But, believe me, you can have yourself touched and moved by other pieces in the CD.

Artie Traum writes in the liner notes, "I'm convinced that music has the capacity to heal, to transform and to communicate. I can't prove it, but I believe it this: as the waves of sound spread outward, they seep quietly through the world, like mist on a warm summer night." Actually Traum has proved it and this album is strong evidence.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ****1/2 - one of the best in the series.......2004-08-06

Not five straight stars, though...partly because the authentic Mississippi Delta stuff is interspersed with much more urban sounds from B.B. King and Albert King. And (very) electric Chicago-sides by Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, and Robert Nighthawk do much to blur the distinctiveness of this package.

But there's nothing wrong with the music itself. Delta legends Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Son House are here, doing "Rattlesnake Blues", the eerie "Crossroads Blues" and the harsh "Preachin' The Blues" respectively. Muddy Waters' late-40s single "I Feel Like Going Home" is one of his finest early songs. And the awesome (and sadly underrated) Tommy Johnson is represented by two of his best and most impressive songs, "Big Road Blues" and "Cool Drink Of Water Blues" (the basis for Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked For Water").

The fidelity on the oldest recordings, particularly by House and Patton, is below par, obviously, but that's the case with every reissue of this material, not just this one.
The annotation is very good, as always with this series, and there are a few relatively obscure songs here which should please blues lovers (although seasoned blues listeners probably have most of this material already): "On The Wall", an energetic piano blues by Charley Patton-associate Louise Johnson, the acoustic "Catfish Blues" by Robert Petway, Rube Lacey's moody "Mississippi Jail House Groan", and Willie Brown's sandpapery rendition of the raw, Son House-like "Future Blues".

The newer material includes slide guitar master Robert Nighthawk's gritty "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby", and great songs by Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. And the inclusion of the underrated and underrecorded Floyd Jones' "Dark Road" (another reworking of Johnson's "Big Road Blues") is an additional treat.

A great collection of music. Not the definitive word on Delta blues, obviously, and some of these songs, excellent as they are, have no business being on a compilation of "Mississippi Delta Blues". But still...great music.

5 out of 5 stars Good Compilation, Two by Tommy Johnson.......2001-09-29

Still one of the best intro CDs to the blues. I'm knocked out by Tommy Johnson; he's the first two selections here. Charley Patton, but hey - what about that pivotal Willie Brown doing "Future Blues"? The liner notes are not circumspect in describing Louise Johnson's "performance" on "On the Wall". Another treat is two by Elmore James - 'specially "Something Inside Me" which floats along like Jimi Hendrix.
I never tire of this compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Weird and Wonderful.......1998-08-12

Any Mississippi Delta Blues fan would have an awful time picking just 15 representative entries. This album does a great job, falling just short by including too much new material - by new, I mean after 1940. Still, you can't argue with Robert Johnson's "Crossroad Blues" or even Robert Nighthawk's superlative "Going Down to Eli's." This captures the individuality, roughness, and anti-spritiuality of Delta Blues really well and a couple of non-obvious inclusions like Robert Petway's Catfish Blues make it a good catch. Of the Blues Master Series, this is one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Brief but good.......2003-12-11

This is a rather brief compilation, as is usually the case with the Millennium Collections, but the track list is very strong. There are no real rarities to bait the hook for experienced blues listernes, but this is a nice introduction if you are new to classic 50s and 60s blues.
It features some really fine songs by some of the best and most renowned Chicago bluesmen, including Muddy Waters' swaggering "I Just Want To Make Love To You", Buddy Guy's smouldering, intense "First Time I Met The Blues", "Talk To Me Baby" by slide guitar legend Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson II's swinging "Checkin' Up On My Baby", and Howlin' Wolf's awesome "Killing Floor".

As far as "samplers" go, this is one of the best of its kind, and it showcases some great guitar work, not only by the main artists themselves, but also by superb sidemen like Hubert Sumlin and Robert "Jr." Lockwood.

    3 out of 5 stars A little too eclectic.......2004-08-05

Well, the entire Blues Masters series is a "sampler" actually.
Anyway, this untitled volume draws from almost every kind of blues and blues-related music, from the ancient recording of a Texas prison camp work gang's rendition of "Go Down Old Hannah" to Stevie Ray Vaughan's funky 80s blues-rocker "Pride And Joy".

It's rather too ecletic, actually...Count Basie is squeezed in between Stevie Ray Vaughan and blues shouter Big Joe Turner, gentle old songster John Hurt is here with his classic 1928 single "Candy Man", and Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, and B.B. King are missing.
The music is good, sure, but this strange collection doesn't really do the Blues Masters series (or blues music in general) justice.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow. A Great Introduction.......2000-08-04

I must admit, this is only my second blues CD. The only other one I own is Rhino's excellent Johnny "Guitar" Watson compilation. I bought that being a Frank Zappa fanatic, and loving his vocals on One Size Fits All. I can safely say, if I didn't get into FZ, I wouldn't have have gotten into the blues or jazz. So, I can't say how effective this is at covering all the bases of blues, or what important artists were or weren't included, I can just say how good it is. I won't go into detail in the songs, because I couldn't describe them as well as could, say, Inca Roads by Zappa.

I want to talk about how much I enjoyed this. It really taught me more about the blues then I had imagined. It seems that misinformation is rampant to the uninitiated. I expected all blues to be weighty, slow, heavy, and sorrowfull numbers. Shake Your Money Maker, Candy Man, Shake, Rattle, and Roll, and quite a few others smash this myth. I really wasn't prepared for the emotional depth and artistic range covered on this CD. It has given me a greater respect for the blues, an intrest in many blues artists, and I hope to collect the whole series soon. Plese snap up this limited edition CD if you have any intrest in the Blues but never got around to picking anything up.

    4 out of 5 stars ****1/2. Fine sampler.......2003-12-07

This 1992 CD is one of the best installments in Rhino's generally excellent "Blues Masters" series.

It brings together 18 recordings by some of the best and most renowned artists on the Chicago blues scene, and the postwar Chicago blues scene is of course "where it's at" as far as classic electric blues goes.

Not every selection is perfect...they could have done better by Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Junior Wells in particular, and where the heck are Elmore James and John Lee Hooker?
But what is here is mostly great, from Buddy Guy's slow, anguished "First Time I Met The Blues" to J.B. Lenoir's upbeat "Mama Talk To Your Daughter", and the compilers at Rhino have included some of the very best songs by men like Eddie Boyd (the slow blues "Five Long Years"), Howlin' Wolf (the menacing "Smokestack Lightnin'"), Jimmy Reed (the swinging, lethargic boogie of "Bright Lights, Big City"), Sonny Boy Williamson II (the magnificent, harp-driven "Don't Start Me to Talkin'"), Otis Rush (the fiery "All Your Love"), and several others.
Magic Sam is here as well, (his "All You Love" is not the same song as Otis Rush's), and so are Jimmy Rogers, Bo Diddley, and Johnny Shines, all well represented by really great songs.

"Blues Masters vol. 2" ranks alongside MCA/Chess' "Chess Blues Classics: 1947 To 1956", "Chess Blues Classics: 1957 To 1967", and "Chess Blues Guitar" as one of the best "various artists"-compilations available. Seasoned blues listeners will have most or even all of this music already, of course, but this is a really good place to start, and the liner notes are excellent as always.

4 out of 5 stars Classic blues sides.......2004-01-06

Split about equally between Robert Nighthawk and his former neighbor Houston Stackhouse, this is another fine entry in the "Blues Masters" series.

Nighthawk's sides, which include a take on his classic "Black Angel Blues", were cut in October 1964 (with the exception of one song, "Kansas City", which was committed to tape five months earlier, and features Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica). He is backed only by guitarist Johnny Young and harpist Big John Wrencher, but Young plays some fine slap-back acoustic rhythm guitar, keeping the beat going behind Robert Nighthawk's subtle picking and searing slide playing, and John Wrencher's fluid harmonica bolsters the sound nicely.

Nighthawk was a severely underrated performer, a brilliant slide guitarist who influenced men like Muddy Waters, Earl Hooker, and supposedly even Elmore James, and who played some of the smoothest and most original slide guitar you'll ever hear.
His version of Lucille Bogan's "Black Angel Blues" is one of his best (and most frequently covered) songs, and that one, along with "Crying Won't Help You" and "I'm Gettin' Tired", show off his superb slide playing (he seemingly plays without the bottleneck on most or all of the remaining numbers, churning out some delightful single-string fills).

Johnny Young, a featured performer in his own right, takes a lead vocal on "Kidman blues", before the second half of the original LP is relinquished to the big, burly Houston Stackhouse and his August, 1967 session (which has Robert Nighthawk on electric guitar, his last recordings before his death little more than a month later).

If you own Arhoolie's 2000 reissue of Sonny Boy Williamson's album "King Biscuit Time", you can see the only picture I've ever come across of Houston Stackhouse - he is playing the guitar, standing to Rice Miller's right.
Obviously inspired by Delta legend Tommy Johnson (he even covers Johnson's "Cool Drink Of Water Blues"), Stackhouse lays down some fine slow blues tunes, backed by Nighthawk and drummer James Curtis. His style is classic Delta blues, somewhat down-home (which isn't a bad thing), and even though these songs aren't as instantly memorable as prime cuts by Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf or Elmore James, Houston Stackhouse's eight contributions are certainly worth a listen.

"Beginners" should start with Robert Nighthawks' fabulous "Live On Maxwell Street" album, but this one is a great purchase for blues fans who want a little more than just the bare-bones essentials.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-10-01

Nighthawks recordings are hard to come by , and I really enjoyed this collection . He plays on all selections but is in the background on the Stackhouse tracks .Needless to say , the entire album is very good and Houston Stackhouse is far from overshadowed by his better known student . Also noteworthy(and an added bonus) is the tremendous harp playing of Big John Wrencher, A very good album deserving a look at.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent slide Guitar from Night Hawk!.......1999-06-08

This is an excellent CD for anyone with any interest in the slide guitar. It features Robert Night Hawk (he himself spelled his name as two words) in some extraordinarily fine slide performances. Night Hawk was recorded doing Sweet Black Angel five times. This version, with the notes delicately shimmering off the strings, is perhaps his best, along with the classic Chess recording of 1949 and the live version, which is among the greatest of raw blues slide performances ever captured. The live performance has just seen its first authorized released (unedited for the first time!) on the new "And This Is Maxwell Street" 2CD set from P-Vine in Japan--PCD 5527/28 (and I hope soon on a U.S. Label). The CD reviewed here is also of interest for the Houston Stackhouse material. Stackhouse taught Night Hawk to play the guitar in 1931. They often performed together. Both come straight out of the tradition of Tommy Johnson and his brothers, which makes him of interest also as a link between Johnson's style and the style of later performers influenced by it. Johnson was known for his use of falsetto. Howling Wolf, of the same tradition, developed this into the howl that gave him his stage name. Stackhouse is an under-rated performer who deserves more attention. Recommended.
