Album Description

Taproot returns to the scene with Blue-Sky Research, their melodic yet hard-hitting follow-up to the critically acclaimed Welcome. Studio wiz Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Kiss, Korn) pushed the band to write over 80 songs for this record. The hard work has paid off handsomely, as Blue-Sky Research delivers not only on every song, but as a cohesive album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blue-Sky Research by Taproot .......2006-11-30

This is a band about to be reborn, the amount of evolution in the members is remarkable. The chemistry overall is perfect with some of the songs being heart broken to even darker songs then ever heard befroe from them. I purchased this CD on release date from a local vender (In no way would i wait for this CD to ship). I just think it needs to be expressed how this album makes an impact, and i know the boys in the band are going to stick it out even tho they are being dropped their label, and are stuck on larger van for small tours, but with all this new world to them, im sure there will be more anger and determination to come from them. Amazing CD, from an amazing band.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Excellence........2006-09-23

This CD is wondorous. I've been a VERY long-time fan of Taproot, and I've enjoyed every one of their albums to date. Though I do miss the blissfully abrasive sound from "Gift" (especially the song "Smile" from that album), this album is by no means something to ignore. "I Will Not Fall For You" and "Facepeeler" have to be my favorites on this one, along with "Blue Sky Research/What's Left". Hell, all the songs are amazing.

In any case, if you're a fan of Taproot, or a fan of this type of music in general and want something unique and very fun to listen to, get this album. You will NOT be disappointed. Change is very good in this case.

5 out of 5 stars DIFFERENT IS NOT BAD!!!!.......2006-07-21

GEEZ!! When will people stop bashing on bands who change up thier style of playing a little. If Di Vinci painted another painting of the Mona Lisa would anybody care? of course not! Its no longer original. Its the same with music, also an art. As bads(respectable ones) grow older their music matures and adds sophistication while still keeping their signature style, especially alt(not nu)-metal. They are artists, not musical xerox machines. If you look at legendary bands that most new bands idolize, you'll find that their music changed alot from album to album. Blue sky research had some very well written and deep songs all around both instrumentally and especially vocally. Even right off the bat with I will not fall for you(their most beautiful song yet), which is where they lost most of you idiots who dont know what real music is, the vocals and music were smooth as silk. I couldnt believe their new found sophistication when i heard it. They kept it coming the whole album most notably with calling and whats left. For those who appreciate great music buy this album immediately. For the rest of you who bashed this album, keep walking over to the pop section and buy a Good Charlotte or Green Day album. Dont worry, they're as cookie cutter as it gets. Shame on you!

5 out of 5 stars Their best album to date!.......2006-07-10

Taproot are one of those types of bands that improve dramatically with each album. If you took a listen to their first album "Gift", you'll hear mostly standard nu-metal with very little originality or style. At the time of that release I almost wrote them off as just another band that were cashing in on the whole nu-metal craze going on back then. Sure they were a little better than most of the bands in the genre, but they still weren't very unique.

Several years later their sophomore effort "Welcome" was released and it was a huge surprise. I found myself shocked that the same bunch of guys who had written "Gift" had come so far in such a short amount of time. The songs were so much more developed, the sound was fresh, the band found an identity of their own, and they thankfully ditched all the nu-metal references they started out with. I knew then that Taproot were a band to watch.

Fast forward a few years later and their long-awaited third studio album "Blue-Sky Research" (love the title) was released. The big question on my mind was whether or not they would be able to top "Welcome". Well not only did they top it, but they went above and beyond. Once again they improved their sound dramatically from the last album, which to me is highly impressive because it's just not seen very often in music these days. The songwriting on "Blue-Sky Research" is just so well-written and diverse than even the songs found on "Welcome" that it was a breath of fresh air.

This time around, the band somehow managed to write even catchier songs without sacrificing their heavier moments. Some songs are more radio-friendly like "Birthday", "She", and "Forever Endeavor", while other songs are much more heavy like "I Will Not Fall For You", "Facepeeler", and "What's Left". You'll also get songs that mix both styles like "Violent Seas" and "Nightmare". Each song is unique and sounds nothing like any other song on the album, which is never an easy task to perform.

The bandmembers have also never sounded better. Stephen's vocals are really quite phenomenal. His singing has become even stronger and more passionate but yet he can still scream his head off like the old days during the heavier moments. Mike's guitar playing has become much more diverse and technical, while Philip's bass playing is smooth and comes out really strong in the mix. Last but not least, Jarrod's drumming is stylish and fits perfectly within the songs to give them the drive that they need.

There will always be those that fell in love with Taproot's specific sound on either "Gift" or "Welcome", in which case this album may not totally be to their liking as it does not sound like either one. But for the fans who are willing to grow with Taproot as I am, I foresee many great changes the band will go through to get to the next level, thus making them a better band in the process. I have no doubt that their next album will once again prove that Taproot will never release the same album twice. Well done, guys.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this on Impulse, try to get a listen to it somewhere first.......2006-07-09

I don't have a beef with taproot, except the fact they wonder why they only sold 100,000 copies of this album. I will tell you this, they have changed a whole LOT! What attracted me to Taproot in the first place was the gripping personal lyrics and the heavy dropped distortion. If you are a fan of their first two albums you will be shocked and probably let down by this disc. Once again I'm not saying its a bad record, it's just very different.

4 out of 5 stars i carry your heart.......2005-06-29

I met Michael when he was opening for CSN in my town. This particular album, though not his strongest effort, is obviously his most personal. I can just hear the demons being exorcised and the joys being relived as the tracks progress to the amazing arrangement of e.e. cummings' magical ode, i carry your heart. Hedges, Crosby, and Nash collaborated on several tunes, some of which C&N recorded after Michael's untimely death (what death IS timely??). The final song is a magnet for me: I know this is outside the review guidelines, but I'm going to share anyway. My dad died when I was 5; two weeks before his death, he went to the jewelry store and purchased a heart-shaped locket for my mother for their anniversary; he had the jeweler insert a smaller gold heart inside the locket. Wrapped alongside the locket was a copy of the poem, i carry your heart. Nineteen years later, my mom read this poem at my wedding. When I saw the title of the final song in the record store, I almost fell over! Take a close look at the poem, then listen to Hedges' interpretation -- sounds to me like the perfect love song. Thanks, Michael!

5 out of 5 stars The Channel to the soul.......2002-08-07

In the passst 8 months I have purchased many of Hedges cd's. Michael hedges has unlocked the key to many people's soul. I have many friends and also have met many people with this opinion. Wether the guitar slapping, picking, or harmonics that you enjoy, all of these elements are key to Hedges preformances. He does not only know how to play the acoutic guitar better than anyone in his time , let alone ever, he knows how to relate to people with his sounds and brighten up their day.

5 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2001-12-28

I'm a huge Hedges fan, but I always play Taproot when I want a departure from solo guitar. This CD has a mystical, fantasy vibe to it that is hard to explain. It is filled with great multi-textured tunes ranging from jazzy to depressing. It's one of my all-time favorites. You've got to check out Ritual Dance.

4 out of 5 stars an eclectic mix.......2001-10-14

This is probably MH's most musically diverse album, with an emphasis on ensemble music. Although this genre doesn't shine on every single track, the bulk of the music contained here is excellent and worth buying. If anything, this album could justifiably be bought simply to hear "Rootwitch," perhaps the most astounding guitar piece Hedges ever composed. "Ritual Dance" is also very exciting, with its very intense and fast rhythms. The "Point A/Point B" series is an interesting presence, performed on an experimental guitar called a Trans-Trem. As far as the ensemble music goes, "The First Cutting" is the most appealing. Finally, Hedges sole vocal performance on "i carry your heart" demonstrates that the artist is also a gifted tenor. Definitely worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to an intriguing guitarist.......2001-08-10

This album grabbed me with the following quote from Steve Vai, paraphrased here : "No one alive plays an acoustic guitar better than Michael Hedges." It may very well be true. Although his recorded musical legacy is sometimes uneven, his brilliance and virtuosity on the guitar cannot be denied. On this mostly insatrumental album, Hedges slaps, taps, pokes, and cajoles his instrument - even employing a special guitar synthesizer for dynamic tonal adjustment - until it begins to take on a life of its own as a completely new musical entity. His polyphonic technique on the acoustic guitar is literally without peer, and his sense of melody and adventure is well-served on _Taproot_. The music is generally on the softer side of things, with traditional nature-worship-type mystical new-age themes. This is not his most energetic performance, yet it is mesmerizing and frequently jaw-dropping. And as it posesses only one complete vocal track - the excellent "I Carry Your Heart" (with backing vocals by David Crosby and Graham Nash) it will be his most accessible album to those who have little tolerance for some of his more ordinary endeavours into pop songwriting (like on _The Road To Return_). Sadly Michael has left us, far before his time, but his instrumental offerings are challenging examples of "new age" music, and some of the most amazing virtuoso acoustic guitar work ever committed to tape.

Album Description

Produced by Toby Wright (Alice In Chains, Korn, Metallica) and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Limp Bizkit, Foo Fighters), the 12-track collection finds the Ann Arbor-based quartet in a more reflective, but no less aggressive. Tracks such as the volatile 'Fault' and the provocative first single 'Poem' make it plain why Alternative Press decreed Welcome to be one of the most anticipated records of 2002. Atlantic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I like it.......2006-12-14

First heard of Taproot on sat radio, downloaded a few of their songs, and was hooked. Bought "Welcome" and after several months in regular rotation I can tell this is one of those albums that I can listen to over and over again without tiring of it. To me, that's what makes a good album.

I'm not ignoring the fact that "Welcome" has an Alice In Chains influence (particularly with respect to the vocals) or the fact that's likely what appealed to me at first, but this is NOT AIC. It's a different and unique blend of hard and melodic rock. It also appears to be recorded well, which is more than I can say for most of today's 0db white noise mastering jobs. There's a notable dynamicism to the recording that makes it a kick to listen to and crank the knob up to "eleven".

FYI, I bought "Gift" as a follow up to this album and while I haven't listened to it enough to give a worthy review at this writing, I can say that it's a different sound. If you like "Welcome" and are thinking of buying "Gift", give it a good listen first.

4 out of 5 stars Taproot's Best...A Hard Rocker's Must.......2006-09-13

Taproot have been called an Alice in Chains imitation. They are not. Welcome is one of the most creative disks in the Hard Rock genre. Unfortunately, they took a different direction after Welcome (October 2002) with Blue Sky Research (August 2005).

2002's Welcome separated Taproot from the generic Nu Metal infestation of this decade with off-time beats most clearly heard in songs like Everything, Fault and Sumtimes. Poem was Welcome's claim to radio play and it was a great, foot stompin' rocker. There were different styles and sounds to the tunes on Welcome, and the songs didn't have the Nu Metal Nickelback epidemic of not being able to tell when the track has changed.

Sure, Taproot clearly was influenced by Alice in Chains. In fact, Toby Wright, Welcome's producer, even co-produced some AiC disks. And singer Stephen Richards has an unmistakably clear singing voice that is a bit similar to the late, great Layne Staley.

But Taproot were definitely their own band on Welcome and put out one of the most unique sounding hard rock disks of 2002.

Unfortunately, Taproot lost some of their unique sound with Blue Sky Research, and went to the Nickelback monochromatic formula for some odd reason. My guess it was pressure from their label (Atlantic) to take the fun and creativity out of the music and make more radio friendly music (indeed they hired Billy Corgan [Smashing Pumpkins] to help with some of the Blue Sky tracks).

This past summer drummer Jarrod Montague revealed on Taproot's MySpace blog that the band had parted ways with Atlantic Records. So hopefully Taproot's 4th release will get back to the music that made them unique and hard.

Hard rockers looking for something mostly unique with a bit of an Alice in Chians Dirt influence should absolutely pick up Welcome.

4 out of 5 stars 4.1.......2006-09-09

After being skeptical when hearing "Poem" on the radio 10,000 times, i bought this for the hell of it. Just thinking there may be something i am missing. I was right! This album is absolutely beautiful. Just listen to Fault, Breathe and Sumtimes. Perfect levels of heaviness, depth and emotion. I adore this cd. Too bad the follow up was so blah, because they were onto something here...

4 out of 5 stars Listen Again !!!.......2006-03-27

I completely disagree with those that don't like this CD. I didn't like it at first and thought it was way too mellow for my taste, but after listening to it a few more times, I really love it. These are extremely good musicians, and that most definitely includes the singer. It doesn't hurt that the lyrics are well worth listening to as well. I'm glad I paid no attention to the negative reviews posted here.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Taproot's second ablum.......2005-12-09

I loved the song "Poem" it was the best one of all that music video played mostly in the morning time's on MTV. I didn't hear the song play on the radio that much. I wish the ablum was more recognized on television comercials. The ablum was release October 15 2002.

Gift is an acerbic and uncompromising tour de force that never once allows directionless bombast to triumph over stylistic artistry. That said, Taproot are certainly no slouches when it comes to bludgeoning. The band's Smashing Pumpkins-like wall-of-guitar soundscapes, disconcerting staccato rhythms, and vocalist Stephen Richards's vocal assaults are accentuated beyond sanity by Ulrich (Pantera, Static-X) Wild's trademark production chops to devastating effect. Eastern accents haunt the nagging choruses of "Again & Again." "Now" showcases the band's seductive light-and-shade dynamism and harmonic sensibility, while the closer "Impact" boasts a merciless, scorching delivery. Based upon Gift, star status seems assured for Taproot. --Ian Fortnam

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Descent album.......2007-05-28

Descent album, and in my opinion, taproot's only good album. The other albums have like one or two good songs on them. But this one is solid from start to finish. It also features one of my all time favorite songs.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped.......2006-12-22

I bought "Welcome" first, so with minor exception I tricked myself into thinking that "Gift" would be an earlier, more raw rendition of "Welcome". Nothing could be further from the truth.

Musically, I think "Gift" is Taproot before they learned to play and sing. It is also far more "fad-ish" than I expected. Sounds too much like the rap-rock and uninspired guitar work of Limp Bizkit and other here today-gone tomorrow bands of the era. There is little to no melody or pleasing sounds here, the lyrics are uninteresting, and the recording itself is abysmal....wtf is up with some recording engineers today? Is the only recording level they know "0db"?

Bottom line...if you like "Welcome", don't bother with Gift. Doesn't even sound like the same band.

2 out of 5 stars Just... Disappointing........2006-03-16

Disappointing. Very disappointing. Their first album is excellent. Their newest album is excellent, but this one is simply disappointing.

Not one of the songs hit me as "good" and that's just... well, disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars You'll listen to this AGAIN & AGAIN.......2006-03-10

When Gift was first released my friend got the CD and played it all the time....so much so that both of us got sick of it and he eventually threw it away. Fast forward to about three months ago and I'm sitting in the autitorium about to watch Staind (my favorite band) throw it down and Taproot gets up to open. I wasn't expecting much but they blew me away. The next day I went and bought all three of their CD's and I have to say that Gift is just as great the second time around. 'SMILE' opens things perfectly and 'IMPACT' closes out the same...but it was and still is the single 'AGAIN & AGAIN' that just gets my blood pumping. 'NOW' and 'I' and my personal favorite 'MENTOBE' just rock everytime...songs like 'EMOTIONAL TIMES' are a little too whiney for my taste's but '1 NITE STAND' makes up for it (killer song)...This album is just all around kick@$$ and will be on constant cycle in your CD changer...just take a hint from me and don't play it TOO much...savor it...it taste better that way.

If you want a CD that really blows you away, Taproot is a good choice. The phat beats and monster riffs add a great deal of flavor and excitment to the record. When I played this CD for the first time, I was in awe. The first track, "Smile," is just a sample of what's to come in the album. This CD doesn't lack anything, Taproot really livens up a dull party. The music you will encounter on this record is hard rock with a harmonic twist. Beyond the yelling, which never reduces itself to shrieking, the lead singer seduces you with harmony that is twisted in throughout every song. If you enjoy Staind, Limp Bizkit, or KoRn, you'll love Taproot just like I do. This has to be one of the greatest CDs I have ever bought!

First I will say that I liked the previous album gift very much. The debut album of taproot is very hard-hitting & packs a punch. When I listened to this album however, I was very disappointed. For some reason they decided to change their sound & now are nothing more than an alice in chains knockoff band. The only songs that grabbed me on this release are Mine & Poem. Those songs fit in with the songs from their debut album. Everything after song 2 is a big disappointment & Im sure has alienated alot of their growing fanbase.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2004-01-04

Amazon.com recommended I would like this CD, so I went and bought it. I like bands like Seether, Chevelle, Bush, Staind, Cold, etc. I hate this CD. It is all in a major key (happy music). "Poem" is remotely okay, but that is it. Unless you love Taproot, avoid this CD. Please excuse me while I go shoot it with my step-dads shotgun.

1 out of 5 stars Only one good song.......2003-01-27

I made a mistake by buying this CD, trust me when I tell you there is only one good song on this entire CD its 'Poem,' that's the reason I got the CD. I basically copied 'Poem' and took the CD back to the store and traded it in. Don't buy this CD if you like 'Poem,' just go and download it.

2 out of 5 stars Cute teenybop pop music.......2003-01-01

Nothing groundbreaking in any way with this music, but fun teenybop pop music nontheless. Cute stuff, but hardly classic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-11-25

When I first heard "Poem" I was immeadiately drawn to Taproot. The CD, in a word, is awesome. They're SO talented and their music can't even be really accurately described with words.
I say all you hard rock lovers out there to go get the CD, it's worth it.
