Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Political militancy so rarely results in more than topical art; thus it's amazing how well Pete Seeger's talking blues, kiddie jingles, angry anthems, and fragile adages to peace have aged. This single-disc successor to Appleseed's double disc Where Have All the Flowers Gone boasts a finer musical diversity, but is ultimately as uneven as the previous tribute. Even after 50 years, performers haven't begun to exhaust Seeger's catalog, and so it's puzzling that Moxy Früvous would waste tape on the forgettable "Maple Syrup Time," that Billy Bragg and Eliza Carthy would see any point to another version of "If I Had a Hammer," or that Kim and Reggie Harris (with Magpie) would push the sing-along folksiness of "Old Devil Time" to the point of parody. The better the song, however, the better the performance. John Wesley Harding (backed by Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey) rocks "Words, Words, Words" straight into the psychedelic garage, Jackson Browne and Joan Baez surround themselves with Cuban musicians for a memorable "Guantanamera," Steve Earle casts his bitter, bloodshot eye deep into the heart of "Walking Down Death Row," and Eric Andersen, his voice an icy whisper, turns the pure lyricism of "Snow Snow" into the album's most harrowing and memorable moment. --Roy Kasten

The Working Class We Have With Us Always. . ........2001-12-30

Townes Van Zandt once said that there's two kinds of music: blues and zippety-doo-dah. Pete Seeger's music never was zippety-doo-dah.

Seeger's finely-tuned sensibilities for the endless complications of the lives of the poor and near-poor, as well as for the trades- and craftspeople of America, has given us some of the most lyrically powerful music of our time. If this album contained certain different songs it would be an easy five star work.

It's still very good. Steve Earle's version of "Walking Down Death Row", Dar Williams' and Toshi Reagon's rendering of "Oh Had I a Golden Thread", Eric Andersen's "Snow, Snow", the McGarrigle Sisters' "Little Boxes", and "You Sing It to Me Too" by Guardabarranco are all outstanding interpretations of Seeger's work.

For 45 years I've loaded a lunch bucket and hauled myself off to work at one job or another. Most of that time I've had a Pete Seeger song or two running around my brain, helping me remember who the good guys are. Pete Seeger somehow knows what that's like.

This album is a fine tribute to a good man, one who never wavered in the good but futile fight for social and economic justice. Carry it on, Pete.

Plus a half a star for this second volume.......2001-07-23

As much as I enjoy a lot of the female artists featured in this volume, I cannot say I enjoy it as much as the first volume. The music does not have the variety of the first volume and that is where my disappointment comes into play. I was so looking forward to the nice blend of pure flute to modern and I did not get it. I love Walela's version of Amazing Grace, but it is on their own album and nothing new. However, if you do not have that album - Walela - then by all means buy this alumn just for that alone. All and all, if you enjoy Native American music, you most likely will like this album. If you are looking for a nice blend of different NA sounds, this isn't it. It IS good, just not great.

(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
