    Album Description

The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, scored for solo violin and Western orchestra, is one of the best known of all contemporary Chinese compositions. It has become indelibly linked with Takako Nishizaki, whose seventh recording of this hugely popular work features on this disc. Songs and Dances from the Silk Road, by the Slovak-born Peter Breiner, is based on traditional melodies to be heard in the West of China, from where the famous Silk Road takes its course through Central Asia to the Occident. Takako Nishizaki is one of the world's most recorded and appreciated violinists, especially beloved in China and other parts of Southeast Asia through her many popular recordings and personal appearances in concerts and in the media. She also lies at the very heart of Naxos' rich recorded offering of music for the violin.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic .......2006-08-06

This is a delicate, soothing, mastery of East meeting West. My favorite selection on this CD is "Spinning," which is so very beautiful. I think that anyone would do well to add this to their collection.

A lovely recoding...not as breathtaking as the live performances I've heard, but divine to be able to hear this piece at will...no ticket required

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and exotic.......2004-01-24

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not extremely knowledgeable about classical music; I just know what I enjoy listening to and this is one of my favorites when I'm the mood for something a little bit "exotic" sounding. A lot of the composers are Russian and the music has the flavor of the East. "In the Steppes of Central Asia" is particularly lovely.

    Album Description

After a dazzling start to his career, which has made him one of the world's best-known and most popular pianists, and a run of recordings of Mozart, Bach, Gershwin and Stravinsky which have made their mark on the classical catalogue, Fazýl Say now shows us another facet of his art: his own compositions. Anyone who has attended one of Fazýl Say's concerts has heard some of his own compositions played as encores, among them the now famous Black Earth for solo piano, based on a Turkish folksong, in which Fazýl, evoking the saz, a Turkish traditional instrument, simultaneously plays the keys and the strings inside the piano, producing an incredible sound. This Turkish pianist is also a passionate enthusiast for improvisation and jazz: `Art Tatum and Ravi Shankar are just as much of an inspiration to me as Bach or Beethoven,' he likes to say. These influences are obvious in this disc's stunning closing track, Dervish in Manhattan, recorded live at the 2000 Radio France & Montpelier Festival before an electrified audience. Contrasting traditional Sufi music and the modernity of "swing," Dervish in Manhattan dazzles with its constantly changing time signatures, rhythmic sequences, syncopations and offbeat accents.

In 1975, Austrian composer Robert Stolz was in Berlin to conduct a recording of his music. During the session he was taken ill and died, two months short of his 95th birthday. It was the end of an incredible career as both conductor and composer. This double CD, issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his death, contains performances of his music played over the years by the Kaiserslautern Radio Orchestra under a number of conductors. It features a broad cross-section of his work, ranging from the hit song "Servus Du," written in 1911, to music he wrote for the 1954 Vienna Ice Review. Operetta, film music (he won an Oscar for Spring Parade), songs, marches, and overtures--the selection gives a good idea of Stolz's range, despite some occasionally bland arrangements. Much more important is the second CD of Stolz himself conducting the orchestra in a selection of songs and arias. "Servus Du" is again included, sung this time by the smoky-voiced Linne Augustin, who demonstrates just what a fine composer Stolz was. --Richard Fawkes

Though Billy Strayhorn is best known as Duke Ellington's tireless collaborator, his contributions to the jazz cannon make him one of the most important composer/arrangers of the century--with or without the Duke. Take the A-Train, the song most associated with Ellington is, in fact, a Strayhorn composition. During his 28- year relationship with Ellington, Strayhorn wrote an average of one piece per week--an astounding output especially considering the painstaking detail and highly crafted nuance for which Strayhorn is known. On Portrait of a Silk Thread, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra led by Jerry Van Rooijen unearths pieces, which, unlike "Lush Life," or "Passion Flower," never made it into the Ellington band's songbook. While the treatment here is certainly reverent, it also underscores the highly stylized grace and almost withering beauty of these richly lyrical compositions. Strayhorn could compose with a masterful, sense of wonder and ornamentation. Just as importantly, he could make those gilded creations dance. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars This record is gigantic!.......1999-03-25

The compositions and arrangements on this amazing CD are beyond master-class. Strayhorn never runs out of colors or instruments. Each cut is like listening to a symphony orchestra--yet it is only a sixteen piece band. The Dutch Jazz Orchestra is superb in its execution. I keep trying to listen to other CDs in my car, but I keep coming back to Strayhorn. I have been listening to it for 8 months everyday, and I keep hearing new things each time I play it. I bought and gave away eight copies as Christmas presents to my band members,(I bought them at Tower for 16.99 apiece) and I just ordered 3 more here at Amazon for 12.99 apiece.) This album is a masterpiece, and the Music SWINGS! I hope they do another CD.

4 out of 5 stars Half an Octet is Better than None.......2002-06-21

Alec Wilder won fans among top singers and musicians as well as lay listeners. His octets for woodwinds, harpsichord, and rhythm created quite a stir when first recorded in the late 1930's. They are still remembered with affection today, by those fortunate enough to have heard the original recordings. They were, however, mostly unavailable on record after the 50's.
"Neurotic Goldfish" presents several of the original octet compositions, as well as some never-recorded untitled ones. This is about the best news a die-hard Wilder buff could hope for.
The selections on this CD are great; some of his best compositions. There are some flaws, however. Unless you were familiar with the originals, you might not notice at all.
One problem is the slow, almost dolorous tempo evident on many of the songs. Wilder's octets were sunny and spry, mixing jazzy swing with classical music (the average time of selections in this collection is about 3 1/2 minutes, about a minute longer than the originals).
Another problem is the slightly muddy sound (to my ears, anyway)of the winds, and a poor balance of instruments. The harpsichord sounds like it's being played in another room.
Still, it's probably unfair to keep comparing this CD to the originals, especially since they are unavailable for comparison. If you fondly remember the old Wilder octets but haven't heard them in decades, you probably won't mind the tempo or the sound so much. And if you've heard of the octets but never heard the music itself, this is certainly a good way to get acquainted. The chance to hear this music again is thrill enough; don't sweat it because it isn't perfect.

It is very unfortunate this title is out of stock. Freeman gracefully and efeortlessly guides the orchestra through flawlessly exquisite medleys of some the most beautiful music ever written. I happened to see a live performance of the medley of Sophisticated Ladies feautured here with a symphony orchestra. It was absoulutely breathtaking. I very much look forward to the reissue of his album.
