One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

1 out of 5 stars Chemical Bros. on sedatives.......2007-07-31

I own every studio album by the CB, but I regret to say I will not be buying this one. Saturate and Modern Midnight conversation are decent, but the rest sound like Gorillaz B tracks. Looking forward to the next album.

5 out of 5 stars Not old Chemicals, New Chemicals!.......2007-07-29

I love the Chemical Brothers. As an electronic musician and dj, the Chems are my favorite artist and my biggest influence.

My favorite work of theirs is actually their DJ mix, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out." Just awesome.

I didn't really like their last album, "Push the Button." I thought it was just ok. The only song I played off that album, was "Rise" and that was actually a b-side to "Galvanize."

I've never loved any of their albums though. I've just thought that certain songs on their albums were mind blowing. The albums usually don't have a very danceable flow to them.

This one does.

This album is the first Chemical Brothers album that I can listen to from beginning to end. There was only one song I thought was slightly mediocre.

"Do It Again" makes a ton more sense now that I've heard it within the context of the album. The sung vocals were questionable to me, but after hearing the album, I think it's brilliant.

And, for the record, I think the "Salmon Dance" is wicked dancefloor material. The funkiest Chemical Brothers track ever.

This album is a bit less in your face then the earlier stuff, but it is quite relevant to the current state of electronic music. It draws influences from the minimal house/berlin techno and nu-rave scene but transcend all of that. They really make some odd-ball decisions and push songs in really strange directions, all the while keeping their familiar sound pallette.

If you want the old (and still great) block rockin' Chemical Brothers, then this is probably not the album for you. But if you want to hear cutting edge dance music, this is it.

Currently my favorite electronic music album. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, You Are the Night.......2007-07-28

There are not so many bands in the musical panorama which, after releasing a singles' collection of a decade of existence, have made out 2 great new albums just after it. As many do, I really enjoy "Push the Button" but for me this album is almost capable of matching with it... and I must confess I was not expecting that. Yes, songs like "We Are the Night", "Das Spiegel" or "Burst Generator" are the night! Go for it fans, the formula is as good as ever.

1 out of 5 stars Don't think I'll buy it!!.......2007-07-27

This is NOT the Chemical Bros. that I know of!!! What the hell happened??? This whole album blows!! Thank god for the preview or else I would have to add another album to the stack of dust collectors and paperweights!! Listen at your own risk!!!

2 out of 5 stars Joe and Jason do it not to well.......2007-07-26

think this is dem, joe and jason chemical. why else would they be called chemical brothers right? Like Allman brothers yeah! I think the real question with this CD is the following: Do they have My Chemical Romance in mind? haha I am so funny, but then it plays into the question of chemical warfare and I doubt that the who-sane guy listened to these guys you know it? The one song I really like is the first song but after that it is just a lot of beeping noises. I think I should go into music becuz I can record my answering machine and make noises with my blender in the background and scream and yeah call it like a project album yeah. Best to listen to when eating pepperjack cheese with Dorito chips that are Nacho flavored yo!

Indie-rock's hardest-working slackers finally release their third album, on which they've made the clear transition from bedroom-pop to stadium-rock without losing everything that makes them great. Those soaring vocals that sound like the unholiest collision of the Cure and Simon and Garfunkel, the nimble pop hooks that are never overused, those lyrics that are as self-deprecating and razor sharp as they are playful--dude, it's all still here. Relax, you can still swoon. Musically, there are some new elements, from the ragged surf-rock that propels "Pam Berry" to the near hip-hop beats of "Sea Legs" and percolating electronica on "Sleeping Lessons" (which two thirds of the way through shows Band of Horses how to write a song). Wincing is neither the clever genre recombinant exercise of their second album nor is it the perfect little self-contained universe of their debut. This is not the Shins' best album; it's their growing pains third record. James Mercer has learned how to shout his words so the folks in the back row can hear; a slightly harder edge and more confidence is on display. But it doesn't gel fully. Mercer remains one of the most talented songwriters working in pop today, and what this album proves is that the group deserves to move beyond the little Zach-Braff-movie-watching, This-American-Life-listening, Frappuccino-sipping demo-ghetto they've found themselves in. Wincing confidently bristles with stupendous and smart rock music that deserves to be enjoyed by your kid brother and your folks as much as your dorm-mates. --Mike McGonigal

Garden State Soundtrack (Features tracks by the Shins)

Album Description

It could be said that the Shins third album, Wincing the Night Away is the most heavily anticipated record of 2007. Post Garden State notoriety, the band has reached beyond their indie-darling status to something approaching mainstream recognition. Recorded over time in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek's Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran engineer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) - Wincing the Night Away is a whole new animal. It is the sound of a band growing up and out. Mercer's infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, and unfaltering. But anything can happen around it - and in this case, it does. Channeling a Morrissey vibe, "Sea Legs" pairs a hip-hop (yes, hip-hop) beat with lush melodic lines and searing guitars. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out piano steeped in psychedelic strings ("Red Rabbit"); fractured synth samples ("Spilt Needles"); gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards cloaking thunderous anthems ("Sleeping Lessons"); and, taking cues from early Jesus and Mary Chain albums - sweeping, fuzztoned epics ("Phantom Limb"). Finally, "Turn on Me," "Girl Sailor" and "Australia" are the lilting, exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we've all come to covet from The Shins.

So slight as to be difficult to detect or describe; elusive: a subtle smile.
Difficult to understand; abstruse: an argument whose subtle point was lost on her opponent.
Able to make fine distinctions: a subtle mind.

Characterized by skill or ingenuity; clever.
Crafty or sly; devious.
Operating in a hidden, usually injurious way; insidious: a subtle poison.

4 out of 5 stars Like a nearly perfect summer's day spent swimming in ocean.......2007-07-23

Being the 145th reviewer here, there is little to add. Without delving too deeply into the music or musicians (I'll leave that for others), I would recommend "Wincing the Night Away" for its creativity and craft.

Listening to the songs is like a nearly perfect summer's day spent swimming in ocean: awash with sounds and enough surprises to keep from being lulled to sleep. I consider this recording to be one of those guilty pleasures--something I never thought I would like to this degree.

5 out of 5 stars No wincing to be done HERE!.......2007-07-16

I never got a chance to listen to the Shins' first album Oh, Inverted World, but I picked up Chutes Too Narrow and enjoyed it; the only real problem there was that a lot of the songs were too short in that the band was building up to something but then decided to just end the songs. Well, I have absolutely no complaints about their latest album, Wincing the Night Away.

This was another one of those cases where the announced Saturday Night Live musical guest was an artist that I didn't know had any recent material out (and speaking of SNL, FYI: the woman singing with the band was Viva Voce vocalist Anita Robinson). But I was pleased because that's when I was first introduced to the single "Phantom Limb", which might be the best song on the album; but the funky "Sea Legs" runs a close second. And "Red Rabbits" and "Sleeping Lessons" are haunting yet enjoyable.

Other notables include "Australia", "A Comet Appears", "Turn On Me", and, well, everything else. While it's true that "wincing" usually denotes what one would do if something was bad, this album definitely won't have you doing that, so pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!.......2007-06-25

Very, very rarely do I think an album is a masterpiece. This one is. The only other album that I like from beginning to end like I like this one is Sgt Peppers by The Beatles.

Some of the songs on this album are so good, that it's truly amazing these guys seem to be sort of slipping under the radar. You never hear about them! But don't let that sway your decision. I'm a music connoisseur and I really just can't relay in words how impressed I am with these guys. Very well done!

You will not be disappointed if you purchase this album. I'm so glad I bought it!

Strummmmm! That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo--four fab fellows who hit the highest heights imaginable. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Love songs to touch any lovers........2007-07-18

This is one of The Beatles earlier albums. It is filled with quirky love songs. I love them all. I'm a sucker for love songs. Not one of their most experimental albums, but certainly good for what it is. The Beatles have never put out a bad album. BUY IT. LOVE IT.

5 out of 5 stars A pop masterpiece.......2007-06-09

Though my favorite Beatle era has long been their middle period (RS through MMT), with their later period (1968 to the end) coming in second place, I've been getting reacquainted with this wonderful earlier album in a major way lately. Their early period might not be as polished, sophisticated, deep, or mature as their middle or later periods, but the songs on this album are all absolutely incredible. There's not a single filler song; all of them are loaded with energy, great hooks, wonderful instrumentation, and some suprisingly mature and introspective lyrics for being only their third album. The songs may all be about love, but each one is special and unique, dealing with different types and aspects of love. These aren't the typical simplistic love pop songs of 1964. It's also a landmark album in that it was their first to consist entirely of original material.

It's amazing to rediscover just how great the early Beatles were, how much kick their music had to it, making up with pure pop/rock energy what it lacked for in terms of maturity and sophistication. It's also probably true that this album is the most accurate picture of what Beatlemania was like, while the phenomenon was still new and exciting, before they had grown weary and cynical of touring and having to keep up a happy squeaky-clean public image. The guys singing these songs were still cute happy-go-lucky moptops. And though only the first 7 songs were included in the film, the other 6 are nothing to sneeze at. More bands should have such high-quality leftovers. (Although, surprisingly, this is one of the few albums where Ringo doesn't get any songs.)

The songs range from energetic pop, such as the opening title track (the opening chord still has an amazing effect so many decades later), "Can't Buy Me Love," and "Tell Me Why," to soft romantic ballads, such as "And I Love Her" (which contains some of Paul's finest lyrics, and I'm usually no longer a fan of the schmaltzy songs he often sang!) and "If I Fell" (which has some beautiful harmonising), to songs with a more complex (for a pop song) view on love and relationships, such as "You Can't Do That" (about a jealous and insecure lover) and "I'll Cry Instead" (an angry and depressed lover who got burned and wants revenge). The final track, "I'll Be Back," has also long been one of my favoritest Beatles' songs; it's so poignant and beautiful, the type of song that anyone who's had one's heart broken but still wants another chance to have a relationship with that person can relate to. And since John is my favorite Beatle, it certainly doesn't hurt my opinion of this album that he sings 9 of the 13 songs.

Overall, it's a great slice of pop paradise and Beatlemania, proving that there actually were some truly great albums made in 1964. This is far from the typical album of the era, with just a few great songs padded out by a bunch of filler. Every single track is a winner, with never a dull moment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2007-05-24

This music is sweet -- no Beatles fan can neglect to add this to their collection. The music and the movie are a highlights from my childhood. Ahh, those were the days.

5 out of 5 stars What else but Fab!.......2007-05-14

These tunes are so much fun! The songs that were part of the soundtrack instantly take you back to the scenes in the film. What else can you say about the Beatles? Every song is good to excellent and each song points in a different musical direction. No fillers or junk where chord selection is flipped upside down and a similar song churned out. Fab four fabulous as usual!

5 out of 5 stars PURE BEATLES'SOUND!!!!!!!.......2007-05-05

This is the biggest example of the "beatlemania" fever; this album was so original (the only one album composed enterely of Lennon-McCartney songs) this was also their third album recorded and all the material are excellent and fresh, the fab four doing one of their best effords; very rock'n'roll songs like A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, I'M HAPPY JUST TO DANCE WITH YOU and TELL ME WHY, great acoustic ballads like AND I LOVE HER, IF I FELL and I'LL BE BACK, excellent pop songs like THINGS WE SAID TODAY and I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, including the country song I'LL CRY INSTEAD, and the greatest No. 1 hit song CAN'T BUY ME LOVE! this album is essential in every beatles and rock and roll collection!!

4 out of 5 stars Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07

I got to see them June 15th 2007 at the Saratoga Winery. They were a blast!!! You thought it was yesterday. They still got it, they still sound as good. They took "Momma Told Me Not To Come" and turned it into a Rap for fun, and the way they did it, you would have thought it had alwasy been sung that way.

I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.

After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

The double-disc soundtrack to the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever (available on a single CD) marks both the zenith and the nadir of disco. It was such a popular sensation that it catapulted the music to stratospheric levels of mainstream popularity, and the album was the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time (until The Bodyguard, and then Titanic). But "Disco Fever" became so hot, it could only flame out just as quickly (along with the careers of the Bee Gees). With this record, disco became a phenomenon and a fad. The Bee Gees' contributions are the strongest, especially the once-ubiquitous "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," and they still hold up. Then there's Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," a trivial piece of pop ephemera that may have set new standards for ephemeral triviality. How often will you listen to this record--and how much will you play when you do? There's no telling--but it remains a classic piece of pop history, and when you're in the mood it's a good thing to have around. --Jim Emerson

Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. Still, the contrast between these tracks and the instrumental score that precedes them may not be to everybody's taste. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a must have for any REAL HP fan.....had to have it! Along w/ the other ones available :)

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter moves on.. and so does the music.......2007-05-23

As a collector of movie soundtracks, it was unthinkable not to get this fourth album of the Harry Potter series. After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive as to whether it would sit on my shelf collecting dust or get a good workout in the CD player.

I own all four albums, and as avid a fan as I am of John Williams, I would have to say "The Goblet of Fire" rates up there with "The Philosopher's Stone" (which really did set the standard for the rest of the following albums). In fact, I would have to say that "The Goblet of Fire" is my favourite. The music is quite simply beautiful and atmospheric. Standouts are "Harry In Winter" (this particular track I can't help but have on repeat mode in the car), "Death of Cedric" and "Foreign Visitors Arrive". "The Quidditch Cup" makes me want to catch the next plane to Ireland! And call me old-fashioned, but "Neville's Waltz" and "Potter Waltz" are pleasant and lovely to the ear.

As for the rock songs at the end, I usually bypass them. Some complain about the jarring disconnect between the orchestral aspect of the soundtrack and the loud rock of the end - well, at least they're at the end and not in the middle! And let's face it. How many people would have grumbled that those songs that featured at the Winter Ball were left out?

I've always loved the work of Patrick Doyle (e.g. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Much Ado About Nothing"), and this soundtrack is no exception. He didn't 'fill' John Williams' shoes on this score. He pretty much created a new pair. Harry's story and personality have shifted on. It would be remiss of us to think the music wouldn't evolve as well.

So has this soundtrack lost that feeling of magic? I would have to say a resounding 'no'. It's certainly a lot more listener-friendly than "Chamber of Secrets"!

1 out of 5 stars The Magic is Gone.......2007-05-10

John Williams is not simply a hard act to follow...he's THE hard act to follow. Nonetheless this score falls far short. There was once magic in the land of Hogwarts.. themes were stated boldly and elevated the story, flurries of woodwinds nurtured scenes of flight. Doyle's score does dare to quote William's melodies at 3 points in this score. They are harmonized poorly and treated even worse. The rest of the score just goes downhill from here. He does introduce his own new "themes." These are presented as boring quarter note string lines that you can't seem to remember 10 seconds after you hear them. The rest of the scoreat it's best is a prime example of dated cliches. The dialogue scenes are overly sappy and the action scenes become hokey in an almost silent film music stlye. Watch the graveyard scene again and laugh, check out the dance scene where characters get lifted in the air as simple scales comically mirror their moves. The most common reaction to the music after viewing the film is "I don't really remember it as being good or bad." If you go back and watch it again I think you story will change. The magic is gone.

3 out of 5 stars Atmospheric...But That's About All.......2007-03-31

One of the joys for me of the John Williams "Harry Potter" scores are the lush, melodic leitmotifs. On "The Chamber of Secrets" album alone there are wonderful themes for Fawkes, Dobby and Gilderoy Lockhart, not to mention Colin, Hedwig and The Flying Car. They're charming, evocative pieces that stand alone apart from the moodier, more percussive tracks composed to accompany the actual movie. Unfortunately, there's nothing that even comes close to these in Doyle's "Goblet of Fire" score. There's certainly drama ("The Maze") and pathos ("Death of Cedric"), but nothing thematic that you'd want to hear over and over again. And what themes there are ("Neville's Waltz" for instance) I find woefully banal. (And don't get me started on the acid rock songs that close the album.) So this is a true movie score in the sense that it's pretty much all background music; it certainly creates atmosphere and serves as a reminder of the film's superlative visuals. But what works well in the theater doesn't translate very well for the home audio listener.

5 out of 5 stars Musically Spellbinding.......2007-01-09

This album is a must for an Harry Potter fan, both young and old, from the mild to the extreme. I also recommend the entire collection of soundtracks to the movies. Each one is full of calm, soothing melodies we have come to enjoy from Harry Potter.

Album Description

Missy higgins kept a very low public profile in 2006 but that doesn't mean she hasn't been keeping busy. In fact with her typical lack of fuss and fanfare the former triple j unearthed winner spent the second half of last year in los angeles recording here brand new album 'on a clear night'. The highly anticipated release is currently scheduled for the end of april in australia. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer mitchell froom who helmed the recent finn brothers cd and the first 3 crowded house albums plus discs for such acclaimed singer-songwriters as ron sexsmith, elvis costello and suzanne vega. The first song to be lifted from the album is 'steer' - a positive and life affirming song which missy previewed live during the us and uk touring she did in mid-2006. Missy's debut cd, 'the sound of white', remains in the australian top 40 over two years after its release. The album is now certified 9 times platinum and is one of the highest selling australian albums of all time!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Higgins second album shines brightly for most, but barely gives off a spark (for me).......2007-06-16

As an Australian, it seems part of the culture to stand up for and admire Missy Higgins. I have yet to meet someone in real life and not from the internet that dislikes Missy's music.

So, I have to give this cd a one star rating simply because the songs all sound the same apart from '100 Round The Bends' and 'Steer' which are the greatest songs on the album.
Her lyrics you can't deny are beautiful and meaningful, and her voice registers much emotion as she sings, but it's just not a very interesting listen...
The songs on 'A Clear Night' which are overly mellow and slow are not particularly catchy or memorable unlike the song 'Ten Days' in her previous effort, which has just enough beauty to push through the barriers of bland and have a place in listeners who usually wouldn't listen to this kind of music's heart.
There's no doubt Missy Higgins seems like a lovely girl who cares about her music not being commercial and sticks up for causes like vegetarianism and anti-war, so this isn't a review having a go at her, but when it comes to her music, you'll either be into it straight away or not. It's not really an album that grows as such...
I strongly recommend 'The Sound Of White' album if you're a newcomer into the world of Missy Higgins - it's just an all-around better album.

Missy Higgins - never understood the hype about her music and never will, sorry. Honestly, Amiel Daemion, I believe is a much worthier singer to be placed on a pedastal and worshipped musically with this category of soft, almost acoustic music. However she doesn't get the attention she deserves, sweeter and less gritter voice, too.
And that's my review!

4 out of 5 stars On a Clear Night...dont compare it with The Sound of White...you will only be disappointed........2007-06-02

Well I really thought that this album would blow "The Sound of White" away before I heard it. The truth is, it doesn't. This is because it is not in the same field as TSOW.
Her previous album was much more piano driven. This is much more upbeat guitar driven. At first listen, it was a major disappointment, but after a few full listens I can confidently say I love this album more than her first.
The songs have their own identity and I dont mind listening to any of them.. well maybe just 1 track (Secret), but even so I love all of these tracks.
Where I Stood is a track which probably mirrors her previous album more than any other, it is a great song which features more piano than anything. 9/10
100 Round The Bends is a much more upbeat song driven by funky guitars with great lyrics. A great upbeat track. 8.5/10
Steer, another guitar driven track..the 1st single. I loved it from the first listen and I still love it. Uplifting and positive. 9/10
Sugarcane goes back into the piano with light guitar and it is a pretty song. Deep lyrics and a pleasure to listen to at anytime. 8/10
Secret is a track which I dont love, but dont hate. I can tolerate it but it isnt my favourite. Its driven by guitar and its really bluesy. 7/10
Warm Whispers is a huge favourite of mine. I love the simplicity of it and the great lyrics. An absolute gem. 10/10
The Wrong Girl has to be my 2nd least favourite track, it is just flat to me, nothing different or unique about this track. 6/10
Angela is an awesome song! It is really folksy and really takes you away with its enchanting simple country music and pretty lyrics. Love it. 10/10
Peachy is a great upbeat guitar driven song with great angry lyrics and with real emotion put into it. Another favourite of mine. 10/10
Going North sounds like something off Gilmore Girls to me! haha its a great Australian-esque country-ish song with simple guitars and backing vocals with some other guy near the end which fits in great with the track. This album is getting better and better! 9/10
Forgive Me, wow this is the simplest a song can get. The term simple, yet effective applies 150% to this track. With a simple guitar and eerie echo, this track gleams with powerful vocals and emotive lyrics. This album couldn't have closed with a better track. I WANT MORE! 9.5/10

So incase you couldnt tell, the 2nd half of the album really hit it with me and I truly believe after a few listens you will love this album and appreciate all the things going for it like the music, lyrics and vocals.
Pick this up. The only reason people are so majorly disappointed by this is because they are directly comparing it to The Sound of White and not judging it individually as its own body of work. Please try it out, you are missing out on some true gems!

4 out of 5 stars Impossible to fault.......2007-05-29

I really thought Aussie singer/songwriter Missy Higgins might have a struggle on her hands to better her excellent 2004 debut The Sound Of White. But with her second release, On A Clear Night, she may well have done just that. Her latest batch of songs are, in a word - gorgeous, and their appeal grows with each listen. Opener 'Where I Stood' is an immediate highlight, a song which shivers with emotion, pulling the listener in with a trademark Higgin's tail of lost love/lost identity over a beguiling, yearning melody. Other standouts are the single 'Steer', the breathlessly beautiful 'Warm Whispers' and the 'The Wrong Girl' which seems to have set up permanent residence in my brain - not that I mind one bit. I've only been in possession of On A Clear Night for a couple of weeks, but I sense already, that I'm gonna keep coming back to this album time and time again. Missy Higgins has again shown us just what a genuine talent she is - one of the most gifted and luminescent singer/songwriters to have graced the scene in some time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music from an Outstanding Singer/Songwriter.......2007-05-12

Entering at #1 on the Australian charts upon its release in April 2007, "On A Clear Night" is Missy Higgins' second studio album and a thoroughly enjoyable follow up to her highly successful debut, "The Sound of White". A more tightly packaged collection of material than the latter, "On A Clear Night" contains the same perfect combination of velvet vocals, emotive lyrics, top-quality songwriting and production that her debut did. The lead single "Steer", a #1 single in Australia, is catchy and engaging. But there is much better on this album. "Where I Stood", "Sugarcane" and "Warm Whispers" are beautiful and timeless songs that demonstrate the abundance of musical talent which Missy Higgins possesses - these three songs alone qualify "On A Clear Night" as a truly quality recording. The more acoustic tracks "Secret" and "Forgive Me", and the folk-like "Going North", are additional bonuses that add to an already fine collection of original tracks. Along with the spectacularly gifted Tina Arena, Missy Higgins is an outsanding ambassador for Australian music at the global level and she deservedly has a long recording future ahead of her. 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Record. .......2007-05-09

Missy Higgins is a fantastic singer and songwriter, which is just as evident on her second record as it was on her first "The Sound of White." It will be all but impossible for her to match the hype and buzz surrounding her freshman record, but in my eyes the quality of "On a Clear Night" is right up there with it.

The album is less piano driven then "The Sound of White" a fact that Missy says is due to her constant touring behind the success of the first album. She says that it's harder to write songs on the piano when you are on the road, so she stuck to writing on the guitar, but the songs don't suffer because of it. They may sound a bit different then the tracks on her first record, but it's in a good way.

The first single from "On a Clear Night" is "Steer", which is a very upbeat, positive song which talks about taking control of your life. Other tracks like "Going North" and "100 Round the Bend" also focus on themes of empowerment and destiny all the while featuring toe tapping rhythms and masterful playing.

The record has some darker, more haunting and serious tracks like "Forgive Me" and "Where I Stood" and "Secret." These tracks are not all autobiographical, and Missy says she has taken leave of making all of her songs sound as if they are her inner feelings yearning to break free. She creates characters and makes them the star of her songs, like in "Angela" which was inspired by seeing an old black and white photo of Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. She thought that despite Vivian's apparent submissiveness and dependence on Clark, it was in face Vivian that was in control the whole time. Missy says she knows a lot of women like that, and so the song was born.

In the end this record is in fact different from her first, but it's indicative of a person who's grown in her craft and, in my mind at least, keeps getting better. Her beautiful voice is still there, complete with her Aussie accent, and the production is top notch as well. This makes for a fantastic listen; if you buy it you won't be sorry.

This CD contains a smattering of all the traditional pieces you would expect to be played during a wedding ceremony which is why I purchased it. I do like it and it will be used at my ceremony. I prefer a little more big orchestral sound but this will do nicely.

Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..

The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's hard to put into words........2007-07-16

To describe this album in a few short words is impossible. Roy Orbison is one of the greatest of all times. NO one (in my humble opinion) will ever have a bigger impact on music in my lifetime. This album shows just how a live album should be. Unforgettable

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Women.......2007-07-16

Roy Orbison, Bruce Springteen, Elvis Costello and more. What's not to like. Golden Oldie for everybody out there who loves Rock and Roll. Doen't hurt that Amazon shipped it to me in 4 days.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Roy live, 20 years ago via television..........2007-07-05

I've always been a casual Orbison fan---while enjoying his radio hits, I never felt drawn to buying a whole LP. Finally, I invested in this disc, from a kind of a comeback concert televised in 1987. On it, Roy gets subtle help from a bunch of good guest artists, but the main attraction, as always, is his distinctive voice, songwriting skills, and arranging artistry. He was in good vocal shape on this occasion, and his big hits do not sound much different than the original 45-rpm singles did which began coming out more than 20 years earlier. In fact, the best performances captured here are those big hits: "Only the Lonely" and "Blue Bayou" and "Running Scared" and "Oh, Pretty Woman." The tunes I was less familiar with, "Leah" and "The Comedians" for instance, I found much less interesting. If you, like me, know that Roy had come a long way from Wink, Texas through Clovis, NM and Memphis, TN to superstardom, and you wanted him represented in the music that reflects your younger days, this is as good a choice as any. (Although I was a kid in Jersey when Roy had his first hit single, I now live halfway between his boyhood home in Wink and the site of his first recordings (not hits) at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis. Roy's initial success came from his association at Sun Records in Memphis, however, which must have seemed like a grand metropolis to the geeky looking kid from Wink.)

5 out of 5 stars THE ESSENTIAL ROY ORBISON.......2007-05-12

AS A TEENAGER I GREW UP LISTENING TO ROY ORBISON. HE'S THE BEST. I LOVE HIS BLACK AND WHITE CD...IT HAS ALL HIS GREATEST HITS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR ALL THE KIDS GROWING UP IN THE 1960'S.
