Why David Arkenstone isn't a top line film composer is a mystery. His music has a cinematic orchestral sweep that seems destined for Hollywood epics. Yet, except for some small films, the silver screen has eluded Arkenstone, so he works out his cinematic ambitions on his albums. A gifted multi-instrumentalist with a wide orbit of influences, Arkenstone has a fondness for the grandiose statement and the sentimental mood. They are present in abundance on Atlantis, his paean to the mythical lost continent. His touchstones range from Coplandesque exuberance to Cecil B. DeMille biblical epics, complete with faux Middle Eastern melodies and rhythms. There are some nice touches, including some Adiemus-like chorales courtesy of Adiemus singer, Miriam Stockley. But Arkenstone's romantic arrangements swamp his compositions like the Red Sea closing on the Egyptians. Most Hollywood soundtracks are full of tried and true emotional strategies. Arkenstone utilizes them all on Atlantis--the only problem is, he doesn't have a film. --John Diliberto

I've had this since it was released and although I don't listen to it all the time like I did when I first got it I still kind of like it. Now, I have a taste for classical music(baroque and classical periods), just so you know where I'm comin' from. This is new age, classical crossover. Don't get this if you're expecting something deep or orthodox. I found this music is best for dreaming.

What I really like about this is it's original sound. Everything just sounds so exotic it's kind of neat. To me this kind of sounds like videogame music(sounds almost like stuff composed by Yasunori Mitsuda or Nobueo Uematsu), I don't think it's complex or orthodox enough to be considered movie music.

This album is fairly short and the pieces arn't that long, so don't expect a packed full CD. If you're looking for something very different try this album out, I think you will like it.

I like this CD so much, when my first one developed a minor glitch I didn't even wait to see if it just had dust on it, I went right out and got a new one. I can't bear to have it skip any notes.

I write to this music; sometimes I put it on just before I go to bed so I'll have neat dreams. If you allow it to, this music can conjure up white-stone palaces, people in flowing white robes, and a myriad of ancient seascapes. It takes me to an exotic bazaar where they sell goods nobody knows about today; the streets are thick with people from every corner, the air full of dead languages.

This is my favourite of David Arkenstone's efforts, so evocative of a time and place that he must have been there once. Highly recommended.

I'm really glad I purchased this, it's something I've been wanting for some while. I love Arkenstone's work, and I am a fanatic of the "myth" of Atlantis. When I found out he had created Atlantis-inspired music, I was compelled to get this CD, and I am very pleased with it.

This is an enjoyable CD to work to rather than relax to, as some of the songs are more upbeat and exciting. It evokes an image of Ancient Greece to me...

Easily matched in intensity is Since the Machine a dystopian epic of massive chords and massive proportions based on George Orwels 1984.

Atlantis Angelis is a powerfully moving work of great beauty and spiritual integrity. The music is trance inducing and leads you up to higher levels of consciousness. It is a moving and extremely beautiful recording of great depth and accomplishment including moving pieces of orchestral work, sung mantrams, invocations for the spirit.... I have found it to help me on down days, or days of problems...and just listening to it repeatedly has altered my consciousness. This is an outstanding artist with a great gift to share. If ever there was a musician i would like to meet and have a conversation with this would be it.

This is a most beautiful CD. I can't believe I am the first to review it for Amazon...
My family and I have been listening to it for 10 years and now our 15 yr old son has re-membered it from childhood and is playing it at many bedtimes. I think it is very subtly transformative!!! Solaris Universalis is as beautiful - maybe a little more uplifting wheras this one takes you very deep.
Very very beautiful. So Im here at Amazon to hunt up a newy from Patrick. Two CD's are just not enough!!!...

Imagine a civilization captured on a CD...........2000-06-24

This is the most tangible of Dwane's first three CDs and one that any electronic musician would be proud to have written. The story-telling is done by lyrical lines expressed by strings, flutes, and synthetic voices, recanting the glory of Atlantis, while neo-rock backbeats and wonderful electronic orchestrations enoble our senses. There are first rate moments in "The Factor", such as counter 3:28 in "Chalidocean", the Atlantean's description of their capital city. "Song of the Dolphin" is a new age composition as lush as they come with crystalline arpeggios, offstage effects, a free-lancing solo flute and violins shimmering until dawn. "Atlantean Magic", the most melodious cut, has Atlantean female voices paraphrasing their culture's considerable technological stature. "Reign of Chaos" conjures up the end of Atlantis in beautiful but tragic majesty. The grand foreboding chord progression is what we point to when we want to demonstrate the power of synthesized music. But it is the last cut, "Eternal Echoes", that touches our very soul, a piano and string epilogue to the legend of Atlantis. We don't feel the anguish of Atlantis's destruction so much as the power of her legacy, forever preserved for us here. If this number jerks a tear, it is hard to tell whether its from the sadness of Atlantis's demise or the remarkable beauty of what Dwane wrote here for his string section. He sucessfully captures the feel of eternity, in a style outside of his usual realm, here in this remarkable conclusion to a remarkable CD. It may seem to the Amazon.com browser that Dwane went the way of Atlantis seven years ago. However, he has three more albums since 1993: Paradigm Shift, The Nefilim and Archives available from other sources.

Excellent Mental Soundtrack.......1999-12-14

I've had this CD about a year and I always look forward to putting this in my player and drifting away to mental images of the ocean. This one may take a few listens to grow on you but it's one you'll keep coming back to- it has a tendency to call you back to it, somehow. Highlights include "Chalidocean", that features a mellow and melodic theme with a sensual female vocal singalong chorus. There's another track with vocals representing the lost citizens of Atlantis that is quite haunting. In various places thoughout this CD, there are ocean and watery sounds in the music to give it that aquatic ambience, although this is not one of those sound environment CD's. Put this one on when you're alone, close your eyes and it's a totally relaxing journey. A definite must-have CD if you want to hear some New Age music that is a cut above the rest.

Mark's third effort - still on track........1998-11-03

A good blend between Mark's first two efforts, the calm and mystic Monuments of Mars, and the more rhythmic Aliens... People have been dissapointed that this CD contains only 40 odd minutes of music. But it is all worthy.

Atlantic Angelis - Stands the test of time..........2005-08-09

I purchased the cassette around 1990 from a New Age store located next to my sign shop. During the years of owning and operating a sign shop, I found the music contained on this cassette to be very soothing and calming, particularly when working on the right side of the brain. Over the years, I have treasured this cassette and am replacing it with a CD. Patrick Bernhardt's vocals have the most wonderful quality for creating a place of peace and tranquility.

I'm not too sure how to describe this CD. I first heard it at a friend's. As I was listening to the first track it was like a soothing calmness came over me. I own many New Age and Spiritual CDs from a variety of gifted artist ........... and I enjoy them very much, but something about this haunting music is so incredible that I went out and bought the CD after hearing only that first track - and I was not disappointed in the rest of it! I'd never heard of Patrick Bernhardt before and was pleased to discover that he was a fellow Canadian. Some of his other work holds no appeal to me but there is just "something" about this CD that I can find no words to describe. I bought Atlantis Angelis several years ago and it remains my all-time favourite CD.

Oh So Soothing..........2001-06-12

'Guardians of Atlantis' is a beautiful album to listen to when you want to get to sleep because the gentle sounds of the ocean and of the tropical island streams meld perfectly with a nice, deep breathing.

When I listen to this album I am able to picture the shore of Kaua'i...with the large waves and sounds of gulls as they soar in the powerful air currents.

The piece called "Caribbean Air" truly allows you to breath in a piece of tropical air...you can feel the sweet moisture in the air.

It's also a treat to hear the Humpback Whales sing on track #5...their song is part solemn and joyful at the same time.

For the first time, Deep Peace and New Atlantis, two classics from Celestial Harmonies, are available on CD. Originally recorded in 1980 and 1983, these meditative masterpieces have long been recognized as remarkable and meaningful works. Frank Perry employs a fascinating array of acoustic instruments, including 400 year old Zen Buddhist Densho bells and a Ming Dynasty Chinese temple bell. He adds various kyeezees (Burmese meditation gongs), Burmese chime bowls, other glass bowls, Tibetan invocation cymbals and meditation cymbals, plus a variety of bells from Tibet, India, Japan and China. He uses no electronics whatsoever in his recordings; the long reverberations are the natural effect of the percussion instruments he uses. "Bells and gongs are representative of some of the most spiritual music," says Perry. He is a master of his art form, understanding how each gong produces its fundamental tone, harmonics and sub-tones. He carefully blends to create the specific meditative mood he desires. "Admittedly, percussion is not a field of instrumentation or sound-source most usually associated with meditational music, but I have spent half of my life refining the potential usages and overcoming the initial restrictions imposed by this musical medium of percussion."

This music is defintely otherworldly. Great for meditation or very deep relaxation. This artist has many more releases on his website, too bad Amazon only has 2 of his older ones. Great CD, one of the better Tibetan Bells trance music.

New music on ancient instruments.......2001-03-17

This double CD contains 2 disc records of the early 80s - DEEP PEACE and NEW ATLANTIC. You hear music made on Tibetean singing bowls, chimes, and other unusual instruments by British percussionist Frank Perry who worked in the 70s together with Keith and Julie Tippett/s and other London based improvisationers. The music is no conventional new age music. Some sounds remind electronics, but are produced on acoustic instruments without any overdubbing or other tricks. This music sounds unusual, but it is healing. While hearing it You are able to balance body and soul. Try it for a meditation. Or feel in Your body, how the different parts being affected by the different sounds. May be it is astral music.
