Timeless - Still incredible 12 years later.......2005-04-08

I too received this fantastic CD as a Word Perfect 6.0 Demo back in 1993. It always frustrated me that my home CD player wouldn't recognize the CD since the 1st track was actually a data track. I did a search on Amazon to see if there was another release, after several unsucessful attempts to load the demo version into my iPod. Not only did I find this CD with two additional tracks but also discovered a DVD of a live performance of Innovators. Viewing this concert is also an incredible experience. Read the liner notes for each song and it will bring great meaning to the songs and to the whole CD. What an incredible listening experience even today, 12 years later.

A brilliant audio equiment test CD.......2004-04-14

I am a as much of a hi fi equipment enthusiast as my finances will allow me. Besides the music on this CD being something very very special, probably my favourite, its diversity in sound is a great test for Hi Fi equipment. It runs from high trebles to deep bass beats, clean vocals, subtle sounds to driving rythms and complex audio mixes.
Try with PMC OB1 speakers Bryston amps 14's (must be biamped) Naim CDX2 CD Player with separate XPS2 power supply and Naim NAC 282 preamp. Cable to taste and you will be blown away.

I'm Speechless.......2003-12-16

I too got this CD as a Word Perfect promo thing back in 1993. I don't even recall trying the software, and found the music tracks "odd". I was but 21 then, and music - to me - had words and regular, rhythmic drum beats - this wasn't music! Two years ago, after being thru a lot of turmoil from '94 to '01, I stumble on this CD - I still had it after all those years. Now I keep it in the truck and in the carousel at home and nothing compares to turning this up loud enough to drown everything else out. And it saves the expense at the therapists office :) Not only did it provide me with a new understanding of music, it helps me live a much more relaxed life.

Powerful listening and reading.......2003-04-02

The music and the insert could each stand on their own as powerfully moving pieces. Together they open the heart and mind to new understandings. At once transcendental and grounding, Innovators can be merely a lovely musical encounter or a growth experience. Either way, you'll want to listen again and again.

One of my favorite CDs of all times.......2003-03-05

This music is emotional and deep. I can't say enough about this CD and have listened to it about thousands of times. My favorite track is Sage of Lamberene, dedicated to Albert Schweitzer. It moves me to tears.

Crystalline Beauty.......2004-02-18

Alex de Grassi is one of the best contemporary acoustic guitarists, and this is one of his best albums. Nominated for a grammy award, the compositions, guitar technique, and production quality on this album are all superb.

This album creates an aura of meditative peacefulness and ordered perfection. Every note is exactly in place, and yet at times they cascade over the ear in rich profusion like a waterfall of sound. But this is a peaceful waterfall, not the niagra of a rock band, but the gentle trickling one would hear in a garden.

Many of de Grassi's albums are good, and it is hard for me to describe exactly why this one stands out as one of his best. There is something about the clarity and subtlety of the compositions that catches one's heart. Many of the songs on this album are beautiful, yet none of them are cloying. Some of the pieces are quite abstract, yet they never lack a clear structure and a few subtle themes to tie the composition together.

I recommend this album whole heartedly to anyone who enjoys acoustic guitar music with a peaceful and meditative side to it. Don't mistake this for background music. The meditative aspect comes from the rewards one gets from listening very closely and careful to a superb craftsman and artist at the height of his powers.

I don't like it, but I admire it........2003-01-24

I do think this album deserves 5 stars, although I personally don't like it. I don't like this style of ultra-precise, sharp, "plucky" guitar-playing in which every note sounds completely separate (I'm not a big fan of "New Acoustic" music, which seems to often sound this way); I like music that is fuller and "flows" together more. This album does make me think of water, but of thousands of individual drops, rather than waves or a waterfall. If you love very crisp-sounding solo classical/New Acoustic guitar music (with a hint of jazz) you will probably love this album. Just not my type of music.

Music for Meditation.......2001-12-04

Each note seduces you into wanting to hear more. The music flows from one solo guitar piece to the next. The notes almost drip into your mind and ripple outward sending vibrations through your soul to calm you and yet they awaken something deeper in you at the same time.

Just as being near water calms us, Alex De Grassi seems to want to lull you into a meditative state. While this is named The Water Garden, it is much more and is far from a submissive offering. Each note is filled with a vibrancy that can only be compared to floating on cloud nine and will elevate your mood to a state of joy.

Prelude is an ecstatic piece reminiscent of water tumbling over rocks in a never-ending cycle as rain falls in the mountains, perhaps dripping from leaves and falling down to the earth. Each drop of water finds its way to another droplet and together they flow to the sea. It is absolutely breathtaking and then fades away.

The Zipper almost seems to be a piece about when the water reaches the ocean and as the sun is setting. You can almost imagine the water from a lagoon merging with the salt water. There is a sense of closure and a journey completed.

The Water Garden is a very mellow piece at first and produces a feeling of floating. As if you were floating in a pond gazing at an azure sky.

Lost in the woods must be a woods near the sea because it has a certain longing to it and almost seems to be waves lapping around the shore and at times crashing onto a beach. There is a deep ocean feel, with lighter notes, that make the sounds surface from time to time. I see whales playing in an ocean calling to one another as I watch them from a cliff.

Another Shore has an inevitability and certain sadness as if two lovers have given up trying to find one another and a certain regret is present in the piece.

Cumulus Rising is a far more airy and hopeful piece. An eagle seems to be spiriling upwards towards the sky. Heaven!

Ripple is a rapid selection which seems to move out in all directions at once. Someone almost seems to be swimming towards a waterfall in the shade of trees sending out ripples towards the shore. The most active piece and has a touch of sadness or deep contemplation.

Vanishing point is a very appropriate name as the notes appear and dissolve. As if rain was falling on soil and soaking in very quickly, yet more rain keeps falling. This is my favorite selection because it captures a variety of emotions.

Down below could very well be sunlight reaching as far down as it can go into the water where it reflects off fish playfully swimming below.

In Endless Rain, a torrential downpour of notes is almost overwhelming and you can literally hear drops of water splashing wherever they fall, then suddenly the rain does end.

Music can at times be a drink for your soul. I have never received such a beautiful gift and I thank the wonderful friend who introduced me to music I will enjoy when I need to relax deeply and completely.

POCO - The Last Roundup.......2007-01-22

This is considered to be the "Holy Grail" of Poco recordings. It was during their Indian Summer tour in 1977. If you want to hear Poco the way they wanted their fans to hear them, you cannot go wrong with this offering.

Very Nice Summation of the Late 70's Poco.......2006-10-28

Very much surprised at how good this live concert recording is. Though I did see this final incarnation of the first post-Ritchie Furay version of the band in concert at the time I'm still amazed at how good they were. The sound quality of this CD is excellent, the band sounds super-charged. The only weakness in my mind is a couple of song selections.

For the un-initiated this the end of the road for the band era that includes Timothy Schmit before he headed off to greener pastures otherwise known as The Eagles. This CD includes many songs from Indian Summer, their final studio album with Schmit. On the surface that might not be a good sign, but surprise, surprise. The live versions here improve on virtually all of those songs. Its impossible to exaggerate how well these songs are sung and played here.

Throw in a couple of excellent vintage tracks such as Rose of Cimarron, Keep on Tryin and Sagebrush Serenade and what you are left with is a nice reminder of how good this band was. The songs from Paul Cotton and Timothy Schmit dominate this recording which is good. But you also see the emergence of Rusty Young as a songwriter which would eventually come to full fruition with the subsequent incarnation of Poco sans-Schmit.

Overall this is a great find for Timothy Schmit fans as you would never hear him so prominently featured in his future endeavors with The Eagles. I always liked this incarnation of Poco though most long time fans would not consider this to be their finest era (how could it be without Ritchie Furay?). Take it for what it is; a fine live document of a very good band that never quite got its due.

This is Poco after many of the original members were long gone.
It's still better than 99% of the junk on radio now but don't buy it expecting to hear the Poco of the 70's.

Poco - the last roundup .......2005-10-12

Read the reviews; purchased the CD. It was wonderful to see an unreleased live Poco concert available after many years in the can. But let's be honest, the breathless Reviews I read before purchasing the CD were a bit over the top. Yes, it is a good recording, but the CD suffers because several weak songs were included (in an effort not to duplicate the previous live recordings?). There are some real gems, some real keepers, on this CD, but because of the filler material, it is not a great one. Your best bet: invent a time machine and attend a Poco concert in person.

Album Description

Produced in their own live studio, this is the first studio album released by Die Warzau since 1995's critically acclaimed ENGINE mixed styles and genres and cemented their reputation as electronic innovators to be imitated. Christie's Production has never sounded more complex and listenable while Marcus' vocal range has grown to include a depth that has not been found on an industrial recording to date. The inclusion of Abel Garibaldi and Dan Evans into the core group has built a more powerful recording presence, demonstrated readily by CONVENIENCE's easy stylistic and technical maneuvers. While lyrically, the record is self-assured and fascinating from beginning to end, the party recording atmosphere of ENGINE has been met and bested. It's been nearly ten years and the wait has been well worth it.

Musical masterpiece.......2006-07-28

this is by far the best album that has come out over the last 2 years. i bought it when it was released and all i can say is i have been listening to it nonstop. it is a great blend of musical styles and jim marcus has to have one of the better voices out there. i would recomend this album to everyone, and can't wait for the next album that is released by Die Warzau.

Simply a great listen! .......2006-02-17

Deconstructionists will always find fault. Thus, it is not surprising that some people apparently only listened to the album for technical content and missed out on the subtleties of the whole. Of course, you'll also find crackpots that read too much into the album as well. The bottom line is that this album manages to sound, dare I say, like a pop album. However, if all pop music were this good, then I might consider "converting". Rather than being a disjoint juxtaposition of different sounds and styles, I actually think that the album has a great vibe and that it has more continuity and unity than most have given it credit for having. The album has moments where its biting, creepy, pretty, and mellow. The album probably won't be eclectic enough for puppy lovers and will probably be too pretty for most industrialites. All I know is that Die Warzau is still makes some of the most "organic" highly produced music out there. The maturity of Convenience seems to reflect that of its creators. While some music dwells on the blacks and whites ... Convenience not only includes the grays - it embraces the full sprectrum of colors.

Skinny Puppy meets Annie?.......2006-01-02

I liked this album alot the first time I listened to it. Some songs, such as Bliss (is that Chris Connelly doing a grunge voice?) or King of Rock and Roll, keep the album going at a quick pace. Unfortunately, there are some really bad ballads that just sound worse with every listen. Kleen especially annoys with its use of vocoders.

There are nice little voice samples that fade in and out of the speakers, but Skinny Puppy did this type of thing much better 20 years ago. Even the industrial "trebley" drum production sounds dated.

Not a terrible album. But not a keeper.

excellent album........2004-10-19

I've listened to this cd a few times, after receiving it in the mail yesterday, and it's been growing on me. Firstly, this album is not really industrial, although it has a few industrial sounding songs on it. You cannot really categorize this, other than saying it's "electronic".

A few of the songs reminded me of Depeche Mode a little bit, because of the vocal delivery and electronics.

What we have here is electronic/alternative that goes more experimental, or more towards straight up, listenable pop at times. That's what makes the band interesting. Not to mention, the vocals are top notch, as are the beats. If you liked "Engine," you'll like this one too. This album is less noisy than Engine and a little cleaner, but by no means too "polished." It's not quite industrial, but if you're familiar with that genre, Die Warzau, or a fan of electronic music, you'll probably like this one.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the very delicate, soft songs juxtaposed with the slightly heavier electronic stuff. Most of the songs are solid, but the flow of the album isn't perfect.

This album gets 5 stars, however, because there is just this amazing amount of complexity and mystery to it. The vocals and lyrics are exceptional too. It's one of those albums that may take a while to fully appreciate.

Better than Engine.......2004-10-11

I loved Engine. It was a quirky, weird, but beautifully musical piece of music that flowed from beginning to end and never did what you expected. When DW first started it seemed like nobody was crossing genre boundaries like they were, writing pretty music when they wanted, hard music, electro music, tribal, whatever they felt suited the song. Not that artists like Radiohead are jumping boundaries, too, maybe people will finally get what they're doing.

Conveneince picks up where Engine left off. It's great lound, but the songs are complex and interesting and the vocals are thbest Marcus has ever done. I doubt there's a pop singer on the radio today with a voice this listenable and flexible. The lyrics are usually the best parts on DW records and here they are dead perfect. This is a great record for parties, and it pulls together better than any album I've heard since Cabaret Voltaire's Code, even though the music is diverse and challenging. This album is definitely going to spawn songs that will be great 30 years from now.

And the packaging is nice as well. Good work.

Good thing I became aware and bought this.........2005-03-30

If you read another review I did on their other CD, it's easy to see that I REALLY like this band. This CD was the easiest 5/5 star ever. Once again, UT gives you a sampling of all they've got. You get Rock, Gothic-vibe sound, acoustic, PURE PIANO (whick, when done right, is hard to beat), and everything in between.

First of all, "Sonnet" is awesome. It's the Pure Piano song as I like to call it, b/c it's all piano and vocal. Then there's "Quiet" which almost sounds like a Godsmack song. Also, "My Valentines Last Breath" is a touching, haunting song. Like I mentioned, every song in my opinion, is dead on and there is not one on here that I was even tempted to fast forward.

Becoming Aware is UT's first album. I love it. Some of my favtrite songs are: Xoe, Lack of Days, Voices, and My Valntine's Last Breath.

I give all the songs 5 stars. Stacy's voice is uncomparable to any other in the music world today.

For any band, the pressures of a first record is unexplainable. It is this first record that gives the world a taste of your music and sets all expectations up. If it fails, second chances rarely change the listeners mindset. Unfinished Thought however have seemingly tackled this problem with an incredible sense of gracefulness, and passionate beauty that can only be expressed with listening to the music.

The strong vocal and driven music are what people have been been searching for in vain for a long time now. This is the sound that has been missing. If you dont own a copy..shame on you.

Amazing group with a unique sound.......2004-07-29

Unfinished Thought Is a truly amazing band who's music is not quite like anyone i've heard before. The mixture of the different styles of music is something that i have not heard before. The music is absolutely breath taking. Stacey Nelson, the main vocalist, has such a beautifull voice, that the very first time i heard the album i was hooked.
Unfinished Thought has quickly become one of my favorite groups due to the fact that they have Made this album like nothing else i have ever heard. Every song has a different style, and they still made their entire album great. No need for program buttons with this CD as it was all amazing.
In Finishing I would like to say that Unfinished Thought is a truly amazing band and if you would like to hear some more of their music a great place to find their music would be their website at www.unfinishedthrought.com . I am more then happy to give this band 5/5 stars because they have deffinately earned it.

Album Description

Originally released on Flying Fish Records in 1975, Lycurgus became a "Top National Add-on" and "Breakout" in Billboard Magazine and went on to garner a Grammy Nomination for 1975. Along with Lang's guitar work the album also featured the estimable talents of a young Peter Ostrousko, Jazz piano wizard Butch Thompson, Dobro player Cal Hand among others.

Lang's best album of the 70's.......2004-03-31

Lycurgus was Lang's first solo effort on Flying Fish records. The album received great critical acclaim as well as a Grammy nomination. In my estimation, it was Lang's best album from the 70's. Known primarily as an instrumentalist, Lang stepped out a bit and added vocals to a number of the pieces. Though not his best suite, his vocals are a nice addition and they round the character of the album out. What is really outstanding however are the instrumental pieces. On several, Lang adds the talents of Butch Thompson on Piano, Cal Hand on Dobro, and a young Peter Ostrousko on Mandolin. His solo pieces are groundbreaking, especially the seven-minute plus Flames Along The Monongahela, which is a potpourri of Americana sty lings. The album has an additional five bonus tracks of alternate versions and new material. This album is an absolute must for any aficionado of Lang.

Lang Stumbles on His Sophomore Effort.......2004-03-08

For those of us who were blown away by Peter Lang's debut (1973's THE THING AT THE NURSERY ROOM WINDOW), his follow-up was a major disappointment. Where the former was a finger picker's delight, 1975's LYCURGUS strayed from the formula to include country and Dixieland influences, a host of session musicians, and worst of all--vocals. This may have worked for Leo Kottke, but Lang's vocals are serviceable at best. And on tracks like "That Will Never Happen No More," Lang's guitar is buried so deep in the mix that you can't even hear it. Instead, the song features piano and clarinet solos by Butch Thompson.

The standout tracks are the solo instrumentals. "Round Worm Reel" and "Medley: V/The Connecticut Promisory Rag" especially display Lang's deft finger-picking skills. Lang can also work effectively in a group setting on songs like "Poor Howard," where he shares solo space with Cal Hand (who also worked with Leo Kottke) on pedal steel and a very young Peter Ostrousko on mandolin.

Lang junkies will jump at the chance to get this album after being out of print for nearly three decades, and there are some real gems here; but overall this is not one of Lang's bests efforts. A better choice would be to get the recently rereleased PRIME CUTS from 1978 that presents some of the album's best tracks in a live solo setting.

Cadillac Jones is shifting into overdrive and careening through the Atlanta music scene, with side swiping neo-funk grooves, pelvic pounding rhythms and Hot Tub chic melodies made for modern loving.
