Frankly, it feels a bit weird to listen to Edith Piaf perform in English. There aren't many singers so associated with a country as Piaf is with France. And yet she did record some of her hits in English in an attempt to facilitate her career in the United States. While newcomers to the singer's oeuvre should start with her French albums, this CD is fascinating for advanced Piaf listeners. Most of the sides were cut 1950 and show Piaf in fine vocal form on tracks such as "La vie en rose" (she switched from English to French for the title) and "Autumn Leaves" ("Les feuilles mortes"), a strangely compelling hybrid that alternates between French and English. Piaf was certainly more at ease singing in French, but her charismatic sense of drama could break through in just about any language. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Piaf!.......2007-07-27

Loved this c.d.
All of Edith in English...I prefer the French of course, but hearing her in English at least give me some base of what the songs mean...plus her accent is precious...what a wonderfully talented voice...heartbreaking!!

5 out of 5 stars Huge surprise!.......2007-05-12

What an unbelievable surprise - and joy - to discover Edith Piaf singing in English, and sometimes songs which she never sang in French! Her accent is ten times worse than mine... but the voice remains, outstanding!

3 out of 5 stars Better in French.......2007-01-06

I think Edith Piaf was one of the world's great chanteuses. However, she loses a lot in translation. Whereas her songs in French are effective, touching and powerful, in English they are somewhat bland. Perhaps this has to do with the translations which almost always water down the French. Perhaps it is because her command of English is not great. In any case, for the REAL Piaf, buy anything she recorded in French--you will be transported.

3 out of 5 stars Handy reference for lyric meanings in English.......2005-12-13

This is a nice enough album. I think she sounds a lot nicer in French, but some of these songs are fun, and if you have enjoyed some of her original music and been curious what they might mean in English, this is one way to get a sense of them. Of course, it would be nicer if all the albums came with liner pages of lyrics but they don't. (Edith Piaf sings clearly enough in French that even an amateur language scholar can try to follow the songs by ear however.) I bought this album when I bought "The Voice of the Sparrow," and while I like that one a lot better, and can listen to it more, this one is handy to have. If you do like lyrics in translation, you might also like to check out the music of Joni James and Nana Mouskoura. Their voices are very different from hers, but the multi-lingual aspect is fun.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

    2 out of 5 stars Listeners beware.......2004-06-16

This is yet another oldies CD whose tracks are not all the original versions but are modern re-recordings by the same groups.

"Sugar Sugar," "One Fine Day," "I'm into Something Good," and "Leader of the Pack" are definitely in their original form.

Conversely, "Stand by Your Man," "Little Darling," "When a Man Loves a Woman," and "Save the Last Dance for Me" are definitely NOT the originals, but are contemporary re-recordings by the original artists who are now 60+ years old.

I am not sure if the remaining two tracks--"Cherry Hill Park" and "Silence Golden"--are original or not, because I am not familiar with these songs.

The sound quality of the CD is OK. The bottom line is that if you want an inexpensive CD that contains any of the 4 original tracks listed above, buy it. If not, avoid this like the plague.

      Album Description

Raised in Alabama, Forsyth grew up on hymns, country songs and old-time fiddle tunes. In 1983, she moved to New Orleans, where she studied classical and jazz violin under Ellis Marsalis and others at Loyola University. Calling herself "an adopted cajun," she moved to Lafayette for a time to steep herself in Cajun music. She toured with the Cajun rock band Mamou in 1989, and sang "Valse de la Vie" on the group's Ugly Day CD (Rounder, 1992). She currently tours with Bruce Daigrepont, appearing on his recent Rounder CD, Paradis. Songwriting Awards include Emerging Songwriter Winner at Napa Valley Folk Festival (1993) and New Folk Winner at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival (1996).

"Musically, Forsyth's traditional folk sound encompasses a stylistic range that is much more of a roots gumbo than what the term 'folk' has come to represent in modern times Bluegrass, Cajun, country, gospel and New Orleans rhythm and blues influences can all be heard in Forsyth's polished but down-home sound." -Southern Voice

5 out of 5 stars Music To My Ears.......2001-11-27

If both folk and bluegrass move your soul, then you won't be able to get enough of this album. Gina's voice is beautiful, her lyrics are thoughtful and the picking and fiddling is the perfect accompaniment. I wish she had more albums out - I'd buy them without hesitation.

      5 out of 5 stars Gina Forsyth--An Awsesome Newcomer.......2001-11-21

It's not easy being a folksinger in New Orleans. The city of 1,000,000 has hundreds of jazz, blues, and Cajun music venues, but almost no place for acoustic musicians. Despite that, Gina has honed her talent, and her first CD is one of my picks for the Top 10 of 2001.

She is a great instrumentalist, with an expressive and powerful voice. But Gina can also spin a great melody--"Everywhere I Am" is as catchy as any Dixie Chicks single. The styles are eclectic--from a French Cajun song to blues, to electric folk-rock, to acoustic ballad.

I hope she gets discovered...but then again, maybe not. Big record labels tend to corrupt the music of talents such as this.

1 out of 5 stars Inferior Sound Quality.......2006-09-09

I love Tony Martin. He is one of the greatest singers of popular music of the 20th century. Unfortunately, this album does an injustice to his musical talent. There are many reasons for that. Firstly, the selection of the songs do not reflect the real title of the album. The sound quality of the CD is very poor. Tony martin has a very rich tenor voice that comes through clearly in all of his recorded albums with the exception of this one. You can hardly hear Tony Martin's voice. It is buried by disproportional loud musical background with abnormal base sound. This album is an insult to Tony Martin voice and his music. Because this album is of such an inferior quality, it should be deleted from your list.

2 out of 5 stars Buy 'Greatest Hits' Instead...........2005-08-17

After purchasing Tony Martin's Greatest Hits, I fell in love with Martin's voice. I was filled with hope and expectation that my second purchase, Tony Martin's Greatest Love Songs, would be just as good--if not better. After all, the love songs that appeared on Greatest Hits were fabulous (Here, Would I Love You, etc.). But I was disappointed with this album. Here's why:

The quality of the music on the cd is not as good as other Tony Martin cd's I've heard. On this cd, Martin's incredible voice is overshadowed by the loudness of the music. To even be able to hear the words clearly enough to discern the words...hence the meaning...you have to turn it up incredibly loud. But even that doesn't work quite the way you'd want it too...the music (which should be the background to the vocals) is just too loud, too overwhelming. The strings, the bass, and all the other instruments are just mixed to where they take center stage...which is just wrong in my opinion. I tried adjusting the settings from rock to pop to jazz to piano to loudness to vocal booster to classical. But none of my programmed settings seemed to clear up this problem.

Another drawback to this cd, there are absolutely no album liner notes. There is not a hint on the packaging as to when or where Tony Martin recorded these songs. My guess according to the sound of the music...late sixties to early seventies...but again...one is left to guess.

With an album named "Greatest Love Songs" you'd expect the songs to be....LOVE SONGS...but most of these songs are ambiguous as best to fit into that category. I just can't guess as to why these specific songs where chosen to appear on an album entitled "Greatest Love Songs." You'd think that the songs would have to fit at least these criterion: be a love song AND be great.

Man Without Love -- An okay song about a lonely guy who's been recently dumped...apparently. 3 stars at best

The Loveliest Night of the Year -- At least this song is clearly a love song...so that's a plus...and while this version seems a bit slower than I remember other versions being...it's not necessarily a count against this one. 4 stars.

Red Sails In the Sunset -- I suppose this song is a love song...although not one I'd ever think of as being particularly a great love song...it's about a man waiting for his fiancee to return home to him. 3 stars.

Aquarius -- This has to be the oddest selection on the album. One doesn't necessarily think anything "jazzy" or "easy listening" when it comes to the song Aquarius. (Aquarius minus the song Let the SunShine In) It sounds like a bad lounge club early seventies arrangement. Plus, other than perhaps reading it as a "love of mankind" kind've song...how does this qualify as a love song??? Did they forget this album was supposed to be love songs??? Where they desperate to find another track to include? 2 stars.

Harbor Lights -- Like the first song, Man Without Love, this song appears to be about a broken love affair instead of a love song. Granted, some of the great love songs are about broken relationships...but so far most of the songs on this album are about songs where the man is separated either for a short time or permanently from the woman he loves. Not a bad song. Just not one I'd choose as a "great" love song. 3 stars.

More -- in and of itself regardless of who sings it...is a great love song. I've heard better versions of it (Bobby Darin or Harry Connick Jr., for example), but it's not a bad song. 4 stars.

I Surrender Dear -- seems to be about a couple perhaps indulging in "forbidden love" or else playing a long game of hard-to-get. Anyway, he's making his intentions obvious in this song...not bad...but not a "great" love song in my opinion. 3 stars.

Blue Light of Yokohama -- appears to be remembering a past love affair...that for some reason or other has ended...3 stars

Ebb Tide -- a love song, it's true, but a great love song...??? I'm not putting it at the top of my list of romantic songs...but not bad...3 stars

On Moonlight Bay -- an okay song...again seems to be related to the sailing/sea theme that this album has seemed to be promoting throughout...3 stars.

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows -- I don't know how this song could be a love song...it might subtly be a lonesome because I don't have a love-of-my-own song...but you'd have to stretch it to make it a love song. He seems to be embracing his pessimistic glass-half-empty philosophy. 2 stars

Those Were The Days -- This song like the above (I'm Always Chasing Rainbows) is another downer, depressing song...that is about as far away from a "love" song as you can get. By far, in my opinion, one of the worst songs on the album.
        1 star.

Canadian Sunset -- perhaps chosen because the cd was made in Canada...who knows...it is technically a love song...since it is about a couple falling in love with each other "over a weekend in Canada" but a great love song....??? 3 stars.

The Moon of Manakoora -- again seems to be about a couple falling in love with each other...this time in a more exotic location...but this song is even less to my liking than the one before (Canadian Sunset) 2 stars.

I'll See You In My Dreams -- like so many on this so-called Greatest Love Song collection...seems to be about a broken love affair. Not necessarily a bad song, sometimes it's nice to listen to depressing songs about love affairs gone wrong...but on a collection of "love songs" can't there be more than one or two where everything works out in the end??? 3 stars.

In conclusion...if interested in Tony Martin....buy another album besides this one...I suggest Greatest Hits of Tony Martin by RCA.
