Editorial Reviews

Imagine an album of slow, jazz-tinged reveries about fishing in Wyoming, played by a chamber ensemble of piano, cello, and bass. Then imagine the composer of these reveries as the cowriter of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" and "Live to Tell." That's the case with Patrick Leonard, a pop producer and composer who has obviously been leading a secret life as a contemplative modern instrumentalist. Leonard brings the same unerring melodic sensibility he gave Madonna to these subtle, nuanced meditations. Playing with the bass-and-cello duo of John and Sachi Patitucci and percussionist Luis Conte, Leonard creates the kind of spacious, evocative music you might associate with George Winston. But Leonard has more of a jazz sensibility, and the pairing of bass and cello gives his music a darker hue. I'm always suspect of these "musical postcard" albums, but Leonard carries it off, complete with a faux-leather book cover and hand-written diary entries about his fishing excursions in Wyoming and Montana. Ultimately, however, the music creates its own pictures. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Produced by the legendary Johnny Rivers himself, the 36-song, two-CD set Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006 is the most comprehensive collection of his music ever released. The anthology features 19 of his chart hits, including 15 hard-to-find tracks released on his own label. This set also features two brand-new recordings.

Johnny Rivers vaulted to worldwide fame during the height of Beatlemania, when he released a series of albums recorded at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go, all featuring hard-charging versions of rock Â'nÂ' roll standards. In the late Â'60s, he changed direction with the self-penned #1 hit, Â"Poor Side Of Town,Â" a soulful ballad that he soon followed up with another hit in a similar vein, Â"Summer Rain.Â" In the Â'70s he returned to his rockinÂ' roots and over the next 30 years released album after album of vibrant rock Â'nÂ' roll. Secret Agent Man is the definitive collection from this legendary artist.

I am very pleased. A very complete collection of his work. Good sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars Career-spanning but not "ultimate".......2007-04-05

After years of commercial invisibility, in 1964 Johnny Rivers' energetic, unpretentious, yet solidly crafted studio-enhanced live recordings blasted onto the charts offering a refreshing, all-American alternative to the onslaught of British invasion music. After several chart successes in the "Whiskey-A-Go-Go" vein, Rivers changed musical direction and topped the charts with his self-penned "Poor Side of Town". Next came a pair of phenomenally successful covers of Motown songs, "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Tracks of My Tears". For another ten years Rivers stretched from bluesy rock to lush balladry with two more songs making the top ten, keeping Rivers on the radar of the fickle music-buying public into the late '70's. All told, Rivers saw nearly 30 of his tunes make it into the top-100. With this legacy of music, anthologizing his recordings is no small undertaking. Two decades ago, Rhino did a respectable job with its two-disc collection that has held up over the years. Shout records now offers a new alternative in this "ultimate anthology". While this piece does delve further into Rivers' more recent recordings and offers two previously unreleased songs, it does this at a price. While most of his top-40 songs are included here, nearly a third of Rivers' charting singles are absent. Among those omissions, and though only a minor hit single, "Ashes and Sand" from 1977 continues to evade reissue on CD, somewhat surprising in that it was originally issued on Rivers' own Soul City label. While 18 tracks on a disc may seem to be generous enough, for an "anthology", ratcheting the count up to 24 would have allowed the inclusion of many of the missing singles and would have better justified the claim to being "ultimate". So, down one star for this perceived "stinginess". Otherwise, this set rates highly for the packaging, 20-page liner notes booklet and overall sound quality. Choosing between this and the Rhino one comes down to whether you're looking for more of Rivers' classic single records, in which case the Rhino set wins hands down, or the inclusion of Rivers' more contemporary work served only by this Shout/Soul City collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rivers Fine Sound Rolls Over Four Decades.......2007-03-06

This is a wonderful collection from an artist who should have been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame years ago. The intelligence, energy and quiet integrity of the music of Johnny Rivers has never been clearer than on this career-spanning collection. The Hall of Fame can have the Ramones and Sex Pistols. I'll take these two discs to my desert island.

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favour Get This CD.......2007-02-24

The excellent sound quality on this cd was a revelation especially when the songs date back to 1964. My previous Johnny Rivers compilation cd sounded very thin. This is not the case with "Secret Agent Man - The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006".

You forget just how many hit records Johnny Rivers had until you have them all on a cd like this. His music is very much in the feel good mode and this disc has seldom been out of my player since it arrived. If you are a Johnny Rivers fan or simply like good music this cd is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Johnny Rivers.......2007-02-13

For years I have played the RINO'S JOHNNY RIVERS ANTHOLOGY 1964-1977
and I was looking to update my collection of Johnny Rivers.
This just hit the spot. The Ultimate "Secret Agent Man" is nice Clean and Clear Copies of his older song plus adds his newer songs in 1964-2006
There are songs on both collections that are not on the other one, so I will be keeping both and adding them to "Back At The Whisky" I got Johnny Rivers now covered.

If Rhino's more comprehensive Anthology 1964-1977 is too rich for your blood, this 10-song collection offers a good introduction to the charismatic singer-guitarist's biggest hits. Along with the immortal P.F. Sloan-penned spy drama "Secret Agent Man," the disc contains such memorable Rivers numbers as the bittersweet "Poor Side of Town," the rollicking Chuck Berry covers "Memphis" and "Maybelline," his soulful readings of the Motown hits "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" and "The Tracks of My Tears," and his very credible interpretations of the blues standards "Seventh Son" and "The Midnight Special." --Scott Schinder

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Rivers: Greatest Hits.......2006-11-10

To be honest I bought it for the song Secret Agent Man which I just love listen too!

1 out of 5 stars Polluted Rivers.......2006-09-12

...Allow me to warn you: these recordings have been idiotically overlain with phony crowd noise. The ultimate sacrilege: an arhythmic clap-along all the way through "Secret Agent Man"!!! (Some of the clowns are on the beat, some a beat off; most follow a different drummer.)

Handling it with tongs, at arm's length, clothes pin clamped over my nose, I immediately took it down to Everyday Music, hoping either to sell it or bury it.

5 out of 5 stars A wee dram of pleasure!.......2006-06-10

Johnny Rivers became popular as rock exploded after the British Invasion. He had a distinctive sound that was perfect for the Whiskey A-Go-Go period of rock. Rivers music defies you to sit still. The upbeat beat makes you want to jump and see if you can still do The Pony, The Swim and The Jerk.

Not a complete study, this is more of a good introduction to Rivers. Includes some of the best of this talented perform, especially the rocking sound track for Patrick McGoohan's Secret Agent Man. Also is his big hits The Seventh Song, Where Have All The Flowers Gone?, The Midnight Special, Memphis, the Chuck Berry Standard Maybelline, Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu, and the love ballades, The Poor Side of Town, The Tracks of My Tears.

So discover Johnny if you haven't. Or up date your collection. Great music at a great price.

3 out of 5 stars A small taste of musical pleasure.......2006-05-25

This Greatest Hits cd is lacking way too much to be called that. Your best bet would be to get his Best of CD or one of the double albums like Changes/Rewind, or One of the Wiskey A GoGo albums.
Johnny Rivers was one of the better singers from the Sixies era. Unfortunetly he was overshadowed by a another
Johnny of the time, Johnny Mathis.
Factoid. Most people think that Secret Agent Man was the only
tv theme song that Johnny sung. He did another for a children's
cartoon show. "The Mighty Hercules".
If your real lucky, you might be able to find a copy of it as a single somewhere online.

3 out of 5 stars Mountain of Love.......2006-03-10

Nothing fancy, Just good old songs. Miss the fact that Mountain of Love is not included amongst the titles.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

    5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

    So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

    Well worth buying.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Best album.......2006-11-04

This album is one of my favorite in my collection. Johnny Rivers adds life to a song.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality.......2006-08-15

The remastering on this disk is excellent. The volume, tone balance, and stereo image is consistently good from track to track. Tracks are the same original arrangements you're likely to hear on the radio. If this disk has the tracks you want, buy it. You'll not be dissapointed with the quality of the sound. It's a shame the engineer who did the work isn't listed, he deserves to take a bow.

5 out of 5 stars Great Johnny value.......2006-07-06

Most of you who are on this page know the work of Johnny Rivers. This means you were a teen in the '60s and have heard all the songs from this album on AM radio. All the cuts are what would be some of his best efforts. My personal favorite is the " Secret Agent " track for the guitar work.

For value I have to say this is a great buy although there are more definitive albums out there. This is a great disc for the Johnny Rivers fan who budgets / scrutinizes their purchases and a great dedication to a great artist and class guy.

5 out of 5 stars Liner Notes? Do You Want to Dance? Indeed........2004-12-03

How's this for liner notes? Johnny Rivers used to date sexpot Mamie Van Doren. He had first shot at "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" but turned it down for good cause. (Glen Campbell had to be grateful). Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys sang backup for Johnny on "Help Me Rhonda". Enough? We should be grateful to have the ORIGINAL tunes on a package with so many hits. (No, Mako, "Do You Want to Dance?" wasn't a hit for Johnny but I liked all of your appearances on "M.A.S.H."). Besides Johnny's own "Secret Agent Man", "Poor Side of Town", "Summer Rain" and "Swayin' to the Music", you have songs from an eclectic group that includes Chuck Berry, Buck Owens, Harold Dorman, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, Leadbelly (the original of many singers of "Midnight Special"), Sam Cooke, Pete Seeger, Frankie Ford, Willie Dixon, Huey "Piano" Smith and Stonewall Jackson. And you never yearn for the originals with Johnny as you might with Sonny James doing his generic versions of previous hits. Buy this package of original good stuff today. Why look elsewhere? Oh. Liner notes. Right. Gee, I love the new millineum.

4 out of 5 stars Do You Want To Dance?.......2004-09-18

Pardon me for being picky, but wasn't Johnny River's cover of Bobby Freeman's "Do You Want To Dance?" a hit? All I know is River's version of that song is stellar and it crushed me to not see it included on this album. Other than that the album is top notch with all the major hits and it's a rare sight to see such a good collection of songs on one cd for Johnny.

All the songs are great on this!!!! I would defintely recommend this to people!!!!! I think this is a awesome greatest hits!!! I have all Limp Bizkit's CDs and would recommend them to anyone who likes metal (yes nu-metal is metal) and anyone who just likes having fun, because honestly there are not that many bands out there that are fun like these guys!!! 1 question for all the people who hate this band, why if you hate Limp bizkit so much would you take the time to review their CDs? People call Limp Bizkit fans idiots, but I think its a lot of Limp Bizkit haters who are idiots, who can't have a little fun! I don't think even think a lot of them hate Limp Bizkit, they just don't want to be "uncool" and like Limp Bizkit. Don't listen to people's stupid biased opinions, buy Limp Bizkit CDs!!

Was Fred Durst a great lyricist and vocalist? Nope. Was Wes Borland an innovative guitar player? Not even close. But for fifteen minutes sometime in the 90's, we were all picking up what they we're putting down, and we loved every minute of it. There are only one or two good songs on each Limp Bizkit album anyway, so now you can have them all on one disc. The new songs suck.

1 out of 5 stars Them bizkit'z aren't the only thing thats limp.......2007-02-10

This band sucks. Always did, always will. Fred Durst and Vanilla ice have a lot in common, if you know what I mean. And spelling hits with a z instead of an s shows just how phoney these retards are. Listen to this for laughs or to induce vomiting. Depending on what affects you're after.

    1 out of 5 stars IMITATION METAL 0/5 stars.......2006-12-28

Im just glad this imitational metal fad band is finished fred lived the lavish life for several years and now most of us exfans went our separate ways and found are true taste in real metal. Why did fred released a greatist hits cd? they were never any good and spelling hits improperly with a Z at the end is just stupid childish and laughable. Not only is this cd a pathetic worthless joke but fred had added songs that didn't even belong to him on his own greatist hits album which he should be adding only his own songs that he wrote not other peoples songs. now thats just saying he's taking credit for other peoples songs and he's greedy for money.

3 out of 5 stars Sure all the singles are on here--but many are EDITS.......2006-11-12

If you are a casual fan of Limp Bizkit and were just hoping to have all the big singles that used to be on TRL and stuff on one disc, this CD comes as a disappointment. At least HALF the songs on here are significantly shorter than on the actual CDs they come from, starting with the first big huge tracks, Counterfeit, Faith and Nookie, which, if you look on itunes, are each listed as the "greatest hits" versions, which I assume means edits so that they could fit more songs on one disc. Too bad. This could have been a convenient way to get all the complete versions of theirs songs on one disc so you wouldn't have to buy each individual CD.

Very relaxing - songs take one back in time. Walter Brennan brings both smiles and possibly a tear or two as stories unfold.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!.......2007-02-19

I use to own the album: Twas the Night Before Christmas...Back Home several years ago, and it is a very good and very personal Christmas album about Country life and Farm life !!

    5 out of 5 stars Walter Brennan.......2007-01-19

Listening to this is like a trip back in time for those of us who remember Walter Brennan, aka Grandpappy Amos from The Real McCoys tv show. That distinct voice of his brings tears to the eyes and a warm glow to the heat in both the Ole Rivers collection and the Christmas songs. Excellent quality.

    4 out of 5 stars Pricing.......2007-01-16

I was surprised that this DVD came from England and only showed the cost in Eng pounds. Not being fluent in converting pounds to US currency I had no idea what the cost would be. Had i not have been given a $30.oo credit for first time use of the Chase Credit card, I believe the 2 DVD's would have been About $56.00. I would never pay that for the DVD's. Otherwise I am happy to have found these as they were gifts for some friends.

cd is good but you will find out that the songs don't match the number sequence of the cd.
in other words the cd songs names were misprinted.

I grew up listening to Johnny Rivers music and really never get tired of hearing him. This CD represents some of his biggest hits and is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. It's highly recommeded, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Import in Disguise.......2000-07-07

Wouldn't recommend this at all, most of the songs are not the original recordings but Johnny must have redone them on a tired day in the studio. Others are from live concerts. Save your $$$

    5 out of 5 stars Nearly 40 years later..................2007-06-21

I have been transferred back in time and loving every single minute of it! I have searched for this album (Rewind/Realization) for years and when I stumbled upon it after nearly giving up on my search, I was ecstatic!! Johnny Rivers has always been one of my favorite artists and Jimmy Webb wrote songs that seemed to call me by name. I can remember the first time I split the cellophane on Rewind and put that vinyl on my turntable. What a heavenly experience it was. I had the same feeling when I split the cellophane on this CD and popped in my disc drive. So many expectations from my past have diminished with time but this experience, I can happily report is not one of them. Although I had to put on my reading glasses to read the fine print this time; my heart was wrapped around the sounds coming out of my compact speakers. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, for bringing these songs back into my life! I will sit here today and type my day away and listen to Sidewalk Song/27 Street, It'll Never Happen Again, Tunesmith with a smile on my face. I feel like I am 18 again in my heart, I will just avoid the mirror today. Johnny, I still love you, wherever you may be. (P.S. I could never drive down Rosecrans Blvd without thinking about you.)

    1 out of 5 stars Rewind Realization.......2007-01-16

I was looking forward to all these great songs of Johnny Rivers on one CD! I was amazed and dissapointed at the poor quality. I brought out the Johnny Rivers Anothology CD's I purchased a few years ago to compare . There is no comparison in the quality of the same songs. It is a shame this studio is doing such a disservice to such a great artist. Amazon needs to re-consider using them as a vendor.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible classic.......2007-01-10

All it took was the lead in to Hey Joe, the first song on the Realization portion of the CD, and I was off the planet. Couldn't ask for a more fabulous flashback to the late 60's. Johnny Rivers at his best and never got enough accolades for this amazing album. This CD is more than a collectable. The Realization album was a must in 68/69, and still is. Only wish the remastering was a bit more expansive.

1 out of 5 stars Rivers run dry.......2006-12-27

Don't buy it. If you can get Carpet Man on another collection, do so. He's better off not trying to be hip because he is not. I purchased this for historical purposes, but if you ever wonder about pop idols trying to be hip, Tommy Roe did a little better with Winter's Day.

    3 out of 5 stars rewind.......2006-03-18

I was happy that you were able to replace the CD after it got lost in the mail.

3 out of 5 stars Some good humor; some only ok.......2007-01-04

IF you are into the spoofs, this CD is for you. The tunes tend to fit closely to the original songs and some songs (such as "How it Feels to be Old") hit my funny bone just right. Others seemed didn't quite work, and 2 OJ songs back-to-back didn't quite do it for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Rivers is the comedy king of the 1990's and on.......2002-07-02

Well, I finally found out why Weird Al Yankovic's creative output has diminished from say, 1993 to 1999, and I was laughing hard as a result. Al's position as parodymeister has been supplanted by Bob Rivers. I have a few of his Rivers' Twisted Tunes CDs and the 1990's were his decade in comparison to Weird Al, who had the 1980's as his heyday. Rivers seems to have a head start on 2000 as well. Clinton, O.J. Simpson, and the Balkans were his big targets. Dated true, but fun for nostalgia's sake.

His takes on songs go further than Weird Al did, which is, tastelessly non-PC at times and yes, twisted. He also has vocalists imitate the originals if possible, so that makes the parody funnier. Another difference between him and Yankovic is that the songs are one to two minute snippets. And the songs sometimes has profanities.

"Beat Up Old Jetliner," a take on the Steve Miller song, is about a decrepit airplane. It ends with the pilot announcing, "Ladies and gentlemen, I just turned off the no-smoking sign. "I figure, the plane's smoking so why shouldn't you?" Whoa!

The funniest song is a send-up on the Doors' "Hello, I Love You." That song becomes "Hello, I Love You (Let's Get Tested)" For what? AIDS. Now that's funny! Joan Osborne's "One Of Us" becomes "What If God Smokes Cannibus?" Key lyrics: "And do you think he rolls his own." "And when the saints go marhcing home, maybe he sits and smokes a bowl."

Now, I really enjoy KISS so I can appreciate the parody of "Rock And Roll All Night," which is "I Used To Rock And Roll All Night." Basically, it rips on KISS for reuniting and going back on the road with makeup. "We're putting on the makeup again/it covers up a bunch of wrinkled skin" And the chorus: "I used to rock and roll all night/but now my hair's turning gray/"I have to get to bed by nine/rub in a tube of Ben Gay." Now that's really funny!

Two Beatles tunes are ribbed--"Getting Better" becomes "Getting Fatter All The Time" and "Eleanor Rigby" becomes "Officer Fuhrman"--"Heeee likes to set up coloured people." This is another highlight.

Speaking of O.J., "OJ's Trial Thing" is a take on Sam Kinison's "Wild Thing" which was of course a classic Troggs hit, full of Kinison's (his imitator, I mean) manic yelling.

I didn't take things too personally when Weird Al ribbed some things I liked, and the same goes for Bob Rivers. I figure, "hey, it's just a song, right?"

    3 out of 5 stars So-so production.......1998-11-10

Not the best of Bob Rivers, unfortunately... The O.J. jokes are quite dated by now, yet there are several on the album. My copy was stolen by accident, and while I would love to have it back, it isn't worth paying for it full price a second time.

5 out of 5 stars You'll love this album if you want to laugh.......1998-08-09

This is one funny album. I have played it to all my friends and they keep wanting to hear it over and over. You will think the beatles sang some of these titles, Like Ofcr Furman.

    2 out of 5 stars Blech.......1998-06-12

Okay, when I first picked up Twisted Christmas several years ago as a kid, it was great. The little kid singing about Santa Claus being stuck in the chimney, and the christmas song about deadhead were the kind of humor that best appeals to kids.

Now, however, Mister Rivers has lost it. I regret wasting the money on Twisted Tunes #2. If you want comedy/music combos, go with Weird Al or Doctor Demento collections.
