Just horrible.......2005-04-05
This is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. I was so incredibly dissapointed when I listened to it. I'm a pretty big fan of Toadies; this is nothing like Toadies. Every song sounds the same, Lewis doesn't change his vocals throughout the entire CD. I was expecting so much from this group considering their past endeavors, but even the instrumental part of the album is ridiculously lacking. I just don't know what happened. I bought this CD off of Amazon, when I received it I immediately put it in my CD payer and I disliked it so much I put it up for sale on Amazon the next day. I haven't been to any of their live shows, so those may rock, but this CD sucks. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are thinkin. If you can, I recommend going to your local used cd store and if they have a listening station, listen to this cd before you buy it. Do not waste even five bucks on this cd unless you listen to it first and like it. If you want a cd that rocks, buy the first Queens of the Stone Age cd or maybe the Kyuss cd Blues for the Red Sun. Or really, just buy anything BUT this Burden Brothers cd.

A beguiling album.......2004-10-31
Broadway FLOP yields a HIT original cast album.......2004-02-13
The record is short (45 minutes) and does not include the dance pice "The Town House Maxixe" which can be heard on MCA's Leroy Anderson collection. What is on the CD is quite delightful and Sony has done a first rate job coaxing excellent sound from the early stereo tapes. The booklet gives a good essay on the history of the trobled show and a detailed plot summary.
a classic cult musical.......2002-10-19
GOLDILOCKS was written by theater critic Walter Kerr as a love-letter to the silent movies that had captivated him as a child. The story concerns sardonic silent-actress Maggie Harris (Elaine Stritch) who has a stormy love-hate relationship with her cocky director (Don Ameche). Complications arise in the form of beautiful Lois Lee (Pat Stanley), who sets out to steal him for herself. Maggie decides to make one more picture under the assumed name of Goldilocks, and makes one last grab at romance...
The reason why the show failed so miserably was the weakness of the book, which was magnified a thousand times over by the greatness of the score; which features "Lazy Moon", "Lady in Waiting", "The Pussy Foot", "Where is the Beast in You?", and my personal favorite "I Never Know When to Say When".
Through its lovely cast album, the musical has a devout cult following and no wonder. Elaine Stritch in her first Broadway leading-role (after years of supporting work in revivals of PAL JOEY and ON YOUR TOES) and the sparkling score of Leroy Anderson is fantastic stuff. Highly recommended.
Sony Music.
Straight from Broadway's Golden Age: It's Goldilocks!.......2001-06-29
The score is top notch, particularly in the material for Stritch and the perfectly cast Don Ameche. It does sag a bit in the material for the secondary couple, but I think that's because it's the primary couple who are the comedians while the secondary couple gets stuck with the sappy side of romance. Yes, there are book problems. Walter Kerr later admitted that they kept beefing up the comedy at the expense of the love story, and reading through the book (which through an incredible stroke of good fortune I found at a local Half Price Books) that's a fair criticism. But this weakness doesn't overwhelm the show and make it unworkable. I have to agree with the assessment that with The Music Man already running featuring a slightly more lovable con artist and a sweet rather than brassy leading lady, Goldilocks wasn't able to measure up to the competition. Taken on its own terms though, Goldilocks works wonderfully.
To mention particular favorites of mine in the score, I have to start with Stritch's Act 2 torch song, "I Never Know When To Say When". Why didn't this become a standard? It stacks up with the best Broadway has to offer. You can hear the pain in Stritch's voice as she laments the mess she's made of her relationhips. "Give the Little Lady" near the top of Act 1 doesn't really cover much in the realm of plot, but it's just so much fun, and "The Beast In You" never fails to get me laughing. All of these feature Stritch alone or with the chorus, but her duet with Ameche, "No One'll Ever Love You", is just as good, and Ameche's solo number, "I Can't Be In Love", in which he discovers to his astonishment that he is indeed in love, is priceless. Then on top of that is "Bad Companions" for Don Ameche's shady sidekicks Nathaniel Frey (an excellent comic character actor who appeared in many better known shows such as Damn Yankees and She Loves Me) and Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West sings!) which is a hoot from start to finish. These are the standouts in my book, but the whole score is eminently listenable, pleasant and tuneful. Of course with Leroy Anderson writing the music it couldn't be anything else.
I sometimes wish I had been born 30-40 years earlier so I could have actually seen what I am only able to get the barest hint of from reading the libretto and listening to the cast album. I strongly recommend to anyone who has had enough interest to wind up here reading these reviews to make this show a permanent part of your collection. More people need to know this show!
Worth your investment - A real delight!.......2001-01-14
This original cast recording is a gem. The majority of the songs are first rate, the perfomers are all first rate and the recording quality sounds as fine as anything on the market today. What a shame that the show had such serious problems, such as a weak book and opening with such hits as West Side Story and Music Man already running on Broadway.
If you enjoy Broadway musicals and don't know this show, buy this recording. You will not be disappointed!

Mainly for "American maverick" mavens........2004-07-08
It is this latter point that led to my own discovery of Heinrich, while reading a new book by Michael Broyles, "Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music." Broyles dedicates an entire chapter to Heinrich, describing him as the second of such mavericks after the Colonial hymnody composer William Billings. Doing a little back-checking, I then realized that Heinrich had already been discussed, all the way back in 1974 (the year this recording was originally released) by none other than Neely Bruce (the director/pianist on this recording), in an essay titled "Ives and Nineteenth-Century American Music" that appeared in "An Ives Celebration" by H. Wiley Hitchcock and Vivian Perlis, published to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Charles Ives's birth. Both Broyles and Bruce made some points to the effect that Heinrich "anticipated" Ives by a good 7 to 8 decades in some important respects, most particularly in this first work of his, "The Dawning of Music in Kentucky" (1820). For this Ivesian, that was motivation enough to track down this CD.
The work is a grab-bag of songs, instrumental solos and (in a piece unfortunately not included in this album, called "Yankee Doodleiad"), a chamber instrumental ensemble probably not unlike the "theatre orchestra" groups so favored by Ives for many of his works. The connections to Ives are there, if one listens carefully: The songs, unlike their European counterparts of the time, are frequently made of disjunct (melodically disconnected) rather than conjunct (melodically stepwise continous) intervals, as do many of Ives's songs (and, as well, the songs of Stephen Foster). And the longest instrumental (piano) solo, "Banjo Quickstep," incorporates vernacular music (quotations from "Yankee Doodle," "God Save the King" and "Turkey in the Straw") into "art" music just as Ives, and Foster for that matter, were to do many years later.
The songs seem to come across best, and the singers are uniformly excellent, most particularly William Stone (baritone). The keyboard works suffer somewhat from both Heinrich's self-taught compositional style (he seemed to have little regard for "degree of difficulty" in his composing, often writing "lotsa notes" for their effect) and Neely Bruce's pianism, which, while good, is hardly extraordinary. Overall, there is a charming naiveté to the works that serves to place them in a time largely if not totally unfamiliar to us; while they represented the art music of their time, they are quite unlike European art music of that era. "Early Foster" seems a much more apt appellation than "early Ives."
Heinrich was to go on to write more and more complex (and technically difficult) orchestral music that diverged even more from the European art music model. In part, his eventual eclipse into obscurity was due to his music's technical difficulty, thanks to his being self-taught (and not at all conversant in matters of harmony and counterpoint as a result). But also in part American art music approaching the close of the 19th century took on more of the European-model aspect as composers of the Second New England School (George Chadwick, Horatio Parker and others) sought their training in Europe, in large part to satisfy the concertgoers of that later era who took their musical doses as provided to them by European conductors of the many newly-established symphony orchestras that simply did not exist in Heinrich's time.
Despite these negatives about Heinrich's compositional skills, this album is heartily recommended to those who, like me, wish to get a sense of music history - and musical progenitors - in America. Heinrich was, in every sense set out by Broyles in his book, an American maverick, if one who was almost totally lost to the ravages of changing tastes.
The transfer to CD from the 30-year-old originals is fine, and even includes two bonus songs not on the original Vanguard CD. Still, at only a little over 54 minutes, it is a shame that "Yankee Doodleiad" for chamber ensemble wasn't included. It might well have made the "Ivesian difference," and I frankly don't know where to turn to find this missing piece of "The Dawning of Music in Kentucky." It certainly sounds intriguing!
