The West of veteran TV writer/Deadwoodcreator David Milch is as grim as it is gritty, sprinkled with salty dialogue and punctuated by sudden brutality and raw sexuality. The original soundtrack cues by composer David Schwartz (represented here by his evocative show theme), Michael Brook and Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek play off that vision with often stark rootsiness. But it's the series' rich slate of songs -- choices whose inventiveness often rivals that of The Sopranos -- that consistently reinforce its all-too-human drama, if not the crusty veneer. This collection gathers the best songs from the series' first season, coloring the milieu with evocative hillbilly romps like Michael Hurley's "Hog of the Forsaken" and the a capella grace of Margaret's Native American "Creek Lullaby." But the collection's musical eclecticism stretches far beyond mere genre concerns, variously encompassing the nascent jazz of Jelly Roll Morton (a rollicking "Stars and Stripes Forever"), Delta blues of Bukka White and Mississippi John Hurt and even Gustavo Santaolalla's hypnotic Brazilian fretwork. But the collection's country and folk-tinged performances are its most resonant, whether invoking earthy traditions (the gospel fervor of the late June Carter Cash's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee's more heretical "God and Man") or more contemporary stylings like Lyle Lovett's "Old Friend" and the gentle "Twisted Little Man" by Michael J. Sheehy. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Music From Season 1 - Go Back To "Deadwood".......2006-12-13
This review refers to "Deadwood Music From the HBO Original Series" - EXPLICIT CONTENT (CD/Lost Highway")
"Deadwood" fans...you will love and spend alot of time listening to this album that takes you right back in time to Deadwood, the rugged atmosphere and the tough bigger then life characters, the series is based on. Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, etc The selections are a great representation of the series and may have you wanting to watch it all over again(which by the way both season 1 and 2 look and sound marvelous on DVD).If you loved the series, it is like finding an "Old Friend"(Lyle Lovett)
This album is from Season 1 only. It has 23 tracks that not only have the great music by some great artists, but also includes some of the more memorable lines spoken by the actors(Ian McShane,Keith Carridine, etc). The tracks do not exactly follow the order of the episodes, but there is something from each one that depicts the storyline and the times.
The music mixes the sounds of the Old West, and some bluesy material, with the perfect scoring of this sometimes dark series.Opening with "No Law"(spoken), it then goes right into the Theme From Deadwood(at this point I already made plans to get my DVDs out for the night). Then you'll be treated to artists like June Carter Cash("Will the Circle Be Unbroken"),Lyle Lovett("Old Friend") and Jelly Roll Morton doing his rendition of "Stars and Stripes Forever". Also included are a great blues number(from the episode"Plague") "High Fever Blues" by Bukka White, a beautiful ballad, "Twisted Little Man" by Michael Sheehy, and some fabulous instrumentals ,vocal solos, and wonderful guitar work..See buying info for complete track listings.
As I stated at the beginning of this review. This CD is the explicit lyrics edition. And just as with the series, it's is no one you want to play around children or those who may cringe at four letter words(and some much longer). If you loved the series though, that was a big part of what made it seem so authentic. There is a "clean" edition if you prefer, the ASIN of that edition is B00076YPV2. Basically the short spoken tracks are cut out from the album of the "clean" edition. The ASIn for this one(explicit) is B00076YPUI. So in case Amazon decides to lump the reviews together, you may want to check that number in the product info to make sure you are ordering the one you want.
This CD has a running time of a little more then 45 minutes. The sound quality is excellent.Even the old recordings sound great. A booklet with the tracks, artists and the episode it came from is included.
"There's blood on the floor..."(Bullock)
"Yeah - uh - I'm gonna get to that"(Al 'pardon my French' Swearengen)
Saddle Up and Enjoy the ride, with music from "Deadwood".....Laurie
Music in a Western Mood.......2006-08-16
Deadwood score hits dead on!.......2006-07-06
The opening quip from the movie only comes in at four seconds but right away sets the tone for the soundtrack which, like the HBO western series it is set to, is rich, diverse, and raw. The opening theme song comes in at track 2 and is a blevy of mourning violin and hard strummed acoustical guitar licks. Atmospheric as much as it is direct, it and the other songs on here are executed not to perfection, but to the point.
Often times we find soundtracks to be a law unto them. Sometimes a great series will have only a mediocre if not forgettable score, where other long lost series in the heap of cancelled shows have amazing technical and instrumental prowess as well as specific tracks from certain bands that fit the series mood or era. With Deadwood, we are blessed with both. The combination of western, bluegrass, and various instruments help set the tone for a show that is based on the town of Deadwood in the late 1800's. Track 3 is a special treat as its sang by one of the main actors. It's credited as "Al Swearingen" who is a character on the series played by Ian McShane. McShane isn't out of the Grand ol oprey but he doesn't have to be, as his simple vocal presence adds to the simplistic life this song lays out that is backed greatly by a beautiful harmonica.
We continue this old western/country sound on several tracks including track 4 (Hog of the forsaken) and track 7 (old friend). Old friend is a track sang by none other than Lyle Lovett and has some great melodic guitar work on it. Just when you are thinking this 23-track set is going to be full of western jangles and rhymes of outlaw days, you hear in certain tracks actual quips (as described in first paragraph) from the series. Certain memorable quotes nonetheless like Al Swearingen on track 3 saying "in life, you have to do a lot of things you don't want to F$$$ want to do, and in life, you have to do a lot of things you don't (explicative) want to do. If you get aggravated, then the enemy has you by the short hair".
Track 6 is another poignant verse from Wild Bill Hickock in the movie. These tracks may be viewed as irrelevant to some but their messages and meaning, which are to evoke the hardships and trials and tribulations of the old west, add to the heart of this soundtrack just as much as the songs do. Track 8 is a lovely little vocal only tune called "Creek Lullaby" sang by the character Margaret. Short is length but great in diversity for the album, its one of the gems to behold. Again, simplistic but not sappy. This song is one of the many reasons that make this soundtrack a great one, because despite the varying tunes and quips that differ in instruments, vocals, and harmony, they still tie together and meld, like the characters and stories in the series, to make something great.
Track 10 is "Iguazu" and is a Spanish guitar solo that will knock your boots clean off. A fast paced "instrumental" of sorts that has a lot of crescendo and mood swing to it, giving away an image of a scene from the show of impending danger, then doom, and ending with triumph. Track 13 is "God and Man" and has guy talking in the beginning like a preacher, while a harmonica plinks along in the background. This tune starts out sounding like some 1950's delta blues track but quickly buckles down into a swooning and uplifting tune that takes on a serious note despite staying happy. Track 14 is "Fallen from Grace" and is by Mark Lee Scott. Clearly one of the best Americana/acoustic tracks on the whole set list. This song sounds a lot like something Bruce Springsteen or perhaps John Mellencamp would do. Beautiful acoustic guitar work and great gravelly voiced vocals!
Track 19 is not any less powerful as it's a slower tune as well, but a bit more modern sounding. Snapping fingers are louder than a light sounding guitar solo in the background as the vocals soothingly tell a story over the rolling melody of the guitars. Track 21 is the song "Arriving in Deadwood" and is a powerful acoustic solo that starts out dark and is soon accompanied by mourning violins. I find this kind of music inviting and welcome in an age when so many soundtracks are built around top 40 radio or extravagant musical scores by orchestral professionals directed by the likes of Horner, Goldenthal, or Howard. The music again, is like the show, as it is raw but not rotten. It's a hidden beauty that brings you back, even if you are not from "back then", to a vision of a time when hardships were truly hardships, and one took happiness in the simple things in life. Talks about true journeys and real love outweigh your mind for a moment of the comfort you find in taking things for granted, whether that be air conditioning or a cell phone at your grasp for earliest convenience.
23 tracks in all, a combination of western and folk, blues and country. Couple that with some of the lines from the famous characters of the series and you have a multitude of attitude with little left on the table. Soundtracks can live and die like their shows, but with the deadwood soundtrack what I was most impressed with was the diversity and more than normal track listing. If your a fan of the show, you'll probably love this score, and if you aren't but enjoy country or blues tunes that take you back to another time (Move over Tim McGraw, the real outlaws are in town and they just shot your Ford pickup) then I suggest giving this one a try.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Few artists in recent memory have been able to wring more from less than Lucinda Williams. The hauntingly beautiful, wistful, and often breathtaking Essence is another case in point of how far raw emotion and honesty can carry an artist. Williams's singing is at its paralyzing best throughout 11 bare originals, an incredibly affecting vocal performance by a woman who was not blessed with exceptional tone, range, or pitch. Throughout, her voice is incredibly naked, vulnerable, and wrought with feeling. "Blue" and "Broken Butterflies" are gorgeous anti-lullabies whose simple melodies belie their poignant ruminations. The title track is a sultry and susceptible sex-as-drug come-on while "Reason to Cry" has all the hallmarks of a classic country lament. The only departure from the subdued mood is "Get Right with God," a rousing gospel tune that practically begs for salvation through punishment and is the rare acknowledgement of a world beyond Williams's own fears and desires. More meditative than the personal narratives found on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Essence is ultimately more powerful. Williams wallows in sorrow and weakness, and the result is moving and disarming. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
Oh My God, Essence Is A Gorgeous Record..........2007-05-10
Strong songs on this roots rock CD are the longest ones -- Are You Down, Bus to Baton Rouge, Essence, Out of Touch -- because Lucinda's backing band gets to display their wares. Their instrument choices are often unexpected and unusual: fuzz bass, guitars (electric experience, electric octave, live loop, resolectric, slide, and tremolo), one note harmony, acoustic papoose, violins and violas.
Since you're interested, please know Essence was affectionately recorded at Mastermix Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota during 2001. Many of the polishing touches on this recording are very subtle, but the genius lies in Lucinda's use of predominantly male singers -- Jim Lauderdale, Gary Louris, and Charlie Sexton -- for both harmony and background vocals. Joy Lynn White also appears on three tracks.
Even though the shorter songs -- Steal Your Love, I Envy The Wind, Blue, Reason To Cry -- are pleasant, they really could have stood out more. Steal Your Love (Track Two) could have shimmered with harmonica, peddle-steel guitar and clarinet. I Envy The Wind (Track Three) could have likewise benefited from an extended refrain with flutes, piccolos, and recorders.
Not to complain really, but Blue (Track Four) and Reason To Cry (Track Eight) both sound like dour songs that could have been uplifted through some sort of piano accompaniment. Williams sings these tracks with such soft tenderness and love that background piano might have proved distracting, but I'd love to hear these tracks covered by the talented Cat Power for example.
Could I name two favorites? Certainly. Out Of Touch (Track Five) is the closest thing to a pop song. Bus To Baton Rouge (Track Ten) is also a delicate and sentimental song that tells a complex stories in under forty lines. Other than gems Blue and I Envy The Wind, I could listen to this pair of songs for hours.
Essence (Track Seven) is one of two power ballads on this album, and Lucinda nails it down perfectly with driving vocals that glimpse at addiction, death, obsession and transcendence. Alternately, Get Right With God (Track Nine) has biblical undertones, is more rollicking, and serves as the prefect counterpoint to the album closing Broken Butterflies (Track Eleven) which hints at forgiveness and healing.
Personal aside: Does anybody have Lucinda's email address? I had it before but lost it. I'd love to give her more songs.
Possibly her best.......2007-02-09
Lucinda gives hope on an otherwise bleak, generic 21'st century music scene.......2006-12-30
Absolutely sublime.......2006-08-14
"For Girls Under Heavy Blankets with Heat Rising.".......2006-05-04
Her songs are deceptively simple. Their power comes from her images, her delivery and the way the music supports the lyrics. "Lonely Girls," the first cut, sets the stage for the rest. The brisk, light melody, juxtaposed against her sorrowful wail, pushes the sadness deeper. Backup for the predatory "I'm Gonna Steal Your Love," beats like an excited heart. She drags out the words, savoring every anticipated pleasure. The slow, rocking instrumental to "I Envy the Wind," and her voice, almost breaking with sorrow as she tenderly, and with exquisite sensuality, describes the way the elements are free to touch the one she longs for, is painful to hear. The words to "Blue" create the most delicate and beautiful images of the color blue - that particular deep, purple blue that suddenly surprises the eyes and the heart in an ordinary moment. But the lodestone at the center of this amazing album is the pulsing, and obsessive "Essence," with a beat that drives her passionate lyrics of carnal cravings to a boiling point.
In between these heated cuts are tender, sad songs of lost loves. The last cut, " Broken Butterflies," is a personal message to a lover whose anger destroys beauty and love. All this is the stuff of lonely girls.
The music ranges from the whining, bleeding sound of country and western, to jazzy blues. Especially delicious are: the sultry openings for "Are You Down," and the sexy, staccato guitar opening for "Can't Put the Rain Back in the Sky," with it's organ echo, and. punctuated drum beat with a brushed whisper.
The only cut that seems out of place is "Get Right With God." Perhaps a little penance is necessary after these hot, lustful numbers. It's the most upbeat number on the whole album. Maybe we needed it.

Stark simplicity, sincerity and sacredness..........2006-07-31
Frankly, I expected more..........2006-06-13
To be sure, there is something beautiful and pure about this recording. On a strictly emotional level, it is wonderful to hear this dying man, with such an excruciating life journey that had come to such a rich spiritual conclusion, singing the hymns of his youth. The authenticity in his voice is refreshing.
However, I fault this album on two levels. First, the balance between his voice and his guitar was askew, pushing the guitar so far in the background as to almost be irrelevant. I appreciate simplicity, but this album almost sounds a cappella at parts.
My other significant critique is Cash's voice at this point in his life. Of course, any man his age would have similar vocal limitations. I cannot fault him on a personal level. It just makes the album less appealing to the listener. Though his heart would have been at such a different place, I can only imagine how much better it would sound to have heard him sing these songs twenty or thirty years ago.
In any case, it's an album worth hearing. For spiritual reasons, I'm glad that I did. However, the musical problems will prevent it from becoming a regular part of my listening library.

Like 1999's tribute to Gram Parsons, Return of the Grievous Angel, this successful collection revives the tired "tribute" concept and applies it in homage to a key figure in country music. Interpreting songs from across Hank Williams's short and troubled career, a range of high-profile artists use different approaches with equally gratifying results. Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and Hank Williams III play familiar songs with traditional arrangements (Ms. Crow's yodel is an eye opener); Beck, Mark Knopfler, and Keb' Mo' stay closer to their own idioms. Keith Richards's reedy vocal makes "You Win Again" all his own, and Bob Dylan, who has only rarely lent his services to these sorts of projects, leads his touring band through a blues shuffle on "I Can't Get You Off of My Mind." The estimable Lost Highway label has assembled an illustrious cast to sing the praises of the artist who inspired its name, and in doing so it has created a far better testament to its musical mindset than can ever be captured in the term Americana. --Rob StewartCustomer Reviews:

Truly, A "Timeless" Album!!.......2005-06-28
I gotta tell ya, all the artist's on there do a fatastic job!
Tom Petty's version of "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave) to my estimation is about the best cut on the album. Emmylou Harris' version's of "Lost on the River" and "Alone and Forsaken" are just wonderfull and Emmylou's version of "Alone and Forsaken" is about the best version I have heard of that song by another artist.
I do have to say that the worst of all takes on the album is Johnny Cash's "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night". Thank goodness it's the last song on the album. Maybe it is because I never liked the song in the first place. I do like Johnny though.
The true Hank Sr. fan will love this ablum. Especially if your a music fan.
Some great, some good, all interesting.......2005-03-26
I think two of the interpretations are outstanding. Emmylou Harris is splendid on "Alone and Forsaken." She turns the song into a folk tune from Merrie Olde England with the tasty and tuneful backing of Mike Henderson on mandolin and Mark Knopfler on guitar. I also thought Keith Richards' tortured and eccentric interpretation of "You Win Again" was better than good -- although I concede the point to another reviewer that Jerry Lee Lewis did the song even better. Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and Lucinda Williams also sing songs well. Hell, Hank's songs are so good that about anyone could sing them and sound pretty good.

Every year since 1987, there's been A Very Special Christmas record of one sort or another, the proceeds of which go to the Special Olympics. This year's A Very Special Acoustic Christmas is as great as any previous year's efforts, even though it's deliciously unplugged. Country music superstars like Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and Wynonna are balanced by such legendary country and bluegrass figures as Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, and Willie Nelson (doing a version of Charles Brown's "Please Come Home for Christmas" that's almost as haunting as Brown's). Throw in the father of newgrass Sam Bush's sparkling "Let it Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," Tift Merritt's sensual "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and a handful of other luminaries and you get a 16-tune acoustic set long on value that ends with multi-Grammy-winner Norah Jones singing "Peace." --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:
