The sound of Maurer's violin and Carter's double bass is astonishing. Every nuance is captured perfectly, the woody resonance of both instruments lustrous, ringing bright and clear. Carter's playing is beyond category whether he's bowing or plucking. He brings the big instrument to life, creating the sounds of symphonies and the beating pulse of the jazz walk, sometimes within the same phrase or movement. With Albrecht Maurer, he's found a brilliant partner. Maurer's violin playing combines a European classical discipline with an adventurous avant-garde sensibility. In his hands the instrument sings boldly, confidently drawing soundwaves from a full tonal spectrum. Together, they perform music that is breathtaking in its beauty and compelling in its originality. It's a disc not to be missed.
