Album Description

The Komuso were priests of the Fuke-Shu sect of Zen Buddhism who wandered Japan during the Edo period (1600-1868). These priests would take the problems and illnesses of people upon themselves, attempting to help them by playing a particular style of shakuhachi flute music called Sui-Zen. They sought to have their "patients" become completely embraced by their music, allowing them to let go of all distractions, worries, problems, and stresses. The "ko" in komuso means "emptiness" or "nothingness"; this concept of quieting the mind was the aim of these healing priests. Government reforms lead to abolishing the Fuke sect and abandoning all of its temples. It was only by good fortune that the healing repertoire of the Zen shakuhachi survived. In many ways, Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin is a modern-day komuso.

About the Artist Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin has been playing the shakuhachi flute for over twenty-five years. In 1978 he was awarded the rank of Shi-han (Master) in recognition of his work of spreading the teaching of this instrument in America; in 1980, he received his Dai Shi-han, or Grand Master's license. In 1975, he began his work with an organization called Hospital Audiences that brings music into hospitals and homes for the aged. Since then, he has had the opportunity to use the healing repertoire of the shakuhachi to bring peace and recovery to many troubled people.

I could almost get lost in this one. After living in Japan back in the 70's studying with a master potter, (who liked to listen to Mozart, by the way), and developing an appreciation for the shakuhachi, I find this to be a favorite among my classical Japanese music albums.
I put it on the other day while fixing dinner, and I could swear, (even though my Momma taught me not to!), that the food came out better than usual.
All comedy jokes aside, if you like oriental instruments, this group of Healing Music tunes will certainly be enjoyed.

RELAXINGLY CONTEMPLATIVE MUSIC FROM JAPAN'S PAST . . ........2004-04-12

I was very pleased with the quality of the traditional Japanese music on this CD and the attention given to its recording. I'm not one for saying that music in and of itself can heal, but I'm not one for saying it can't play a big part either - especially if the listener believes it can. One thing for certain, this music is very relaxing and I do believe it can help you clear your head and concentrate better. That's one reason why I'm such a big fan of classical Japanese music. It's also uplifting and, in a sense, "purifying" in a very noble and simple way.

All the songs here, save one composed by the performer himself, are taken from traditional Japanese komuso (healing priest) music and its various schools from different historic periods of Japan. Ronnie 'Nyogetsu' Seldin holds the rank of grand master on the shakuhachi and performs brilliantly on all sizes of the instrument (1.8', 2.0', 2.4', 2.8', and 3.0').

Introduce yourself to some music that is truly unique, calming and that just may help you find a comforting corner in today's troubled world.

Music That Can Heal.......2004-02-28

Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin has been playing the Zen shakuhachi for over 25 years, and in 1978 he had been honored with the status of Shi-han (Master) in respect to his work in spreading the method of playing this wonderful instrument to others in the United States. In 1980, he received the title of Dai Shi-han (Grand Master) for his authoritarian skill with the shakuhachi flute. He has since aimed his mission at playing for those with terminal illnesses and at nursing homes for the elderly, in an attempt to ease their body and mind. Many of these people have testified that indeed they do feel more at ease while listening to Ronnie play with this haunting ability.

The word komuso is derived from the title given to priests of the Fuke Zen sect who traveled all over Japan during the Edo period. These komuso would take on other's diseases and worries upon themselves, striving to help heal these people with a style of shakuhachi playing known as Sui-Zen. Since that time the Fuke sect has died out pretty much, and yet the Zen shakuhachi flute carried on. Ronnie plays in the spirit of such komuso, and one could in effect call him a bodhisattva for doing so.

This CD is hauntingly pleasing, taking one's mind into a deeper state where many of our worries and troubles simply do not stay alive. Every track has the power to heal an overly stressed mind that is still at the office while trying to relax at home. They even can transport you to the calm of home life while at the office when played. His skilled ability with this instrument truly gives one the impression of hollowness, as though they have all the room within their being to be filled up. That's the aim of a komuso playing this wonderful flute for us, to empty our minds and return us to our original unknowing state. If you have an illness or know someone who does, this CD is a wonderful gift for either of you. If you are simply looking to find some high quality music to play while in meditation, this also is a sure bet. It's for everyone. Come listen to Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin as he takes mind away...

Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin's playing is beyond doubt from the soul and as such speaks the language of the soul. I listen to this and get lost in my own thoughts, letting time and all my tension slip away.

Few have achieved Ronnie's comfort and intimacy with the Shakuhachi, and it comes through in this album. Though nothing can duplicate a live performance (I have had the priviledge of hearing him live several times) this compilation will come close enough to make you feel you are walking among the Komusos.

Just Awesome.......2007-05-31

If you're a Bill Laswell fan, as am I, clearly this is Bill at his best. It's more trance than meditation music, but this is still one of the best CD's in my collection and a very pleasant surprise to stumble across. I find that I listen to this CD more that any other when I have to clear my head or embark on some projects that take thought as well as action. The music is cleansing, calming and inspiring all at the same time. I highly recommend it!

Amazing.......2006-11-27

The first time I listened to this CD I missed the whole point and found it a little repititious. But after the second play, I began to realize that this album is about one thing...rythm. And the more I listened, the more incredible I realized it was. You can't just listen to the "melodies" here, you have to go a lot deeper than that. The rythms on these tracks are deep, sensual, and absolutely luxurious. Layer upon layer with a wide variety of instruments. I have probably listened to this CD a dozen times and am still hearing things I never heard before. Sit in a chair in front of your speakers (or better yet with headphones) and focus, listen intently to the layers of rythm, in the background and in the foreground, and it will blow you away. I have played it for a couple of friends and their reaction was basically "Wow, where did you find this??"
Highly recommended.

All I can say is wow to this relaxing, bassful, cheerful Chill Out Journey.
On one Track is female singer Asha Puthli who had a No. 1 Hit with The Devil is loose in the 70ties, popular with her Disco-driven L'Indiana in Studio 54 (Mr. Moonlight) and was joining Dum Dum Project two years ago.

Great CD For Power Yoga.......2003-01-20

I don't like the typical slow music for Power Yoga. This Cd with all the strong drumbeats motivates my class to really push themselves to their edge. I highly recommend this cd for Power Yoga as well as Pilates class.

Does not deliver on its promises.......2002-07-08

I became interested in this CD based on the fact that people who purchased Sundari-A Jivamukti Yoga Class also purchased Asana 2, Moving Meditation. These two albums are radically different. I've found Sundari to be meditative and conducive to relaxing yoga sessions. I expected Asana to be more upbeat, but still meditative and inviting to do yoga by. Not true. This album is based on a continual synthesized drum beat, and despite the fact that it is billed as being by "various artists," each track is repetitive and does not vary from the same tiresome beat of the previous track. Nothing about the album could be honestly recognized as meditative or spiritual, despite the suggestive titles of various tracks. I was quite disappointed with the album and found that it does not deliver on its promise of a meditative workout.

Yoga a go-go.......2002-01-24

Every song on this CD is great. Don't feel like doing a yoga practice? Just put this CD on and try to sit still. I love to play it when I teach yoga for an energized class.

Breathtaking.............2003-11-25

A friend of mine bought this for me a while back. I loved this cd! Some may not though.....it's got rainwater and other relaxing sounds in the background. The horn playing is so artfully executed that the noise in the background just adds to the relaxation this cd brings. The artist resonates in every piece, and you can hear the emotion he puts into it. The piano accompanist is outstanding. This cd is perfect for a rainy day, when you want to relax, or if you just love horns.

Steve Vai takes the concept of pairing guitar shredders and Christmas classics one step further, putting another string of pickers on the tree with a little less spectacular results than on his first outing. Which isn't to say that this album is a lump of coal. There are some riveting moments, especially when Steve Stevens dry-gulches "Do You Hear What I Hear," first lulling the listener into reverential submission with an almost medieval rendering of this time-honored classic, then shifting gears and jetting into Christmas future with some unconventional note-bending. Ted Nugent's "Deck the Halls" reminds one why the Amboy Dukes and Damn Yankees were appealing, before the Nuge filled himself full of hot air. An added plus is Robin Trower's rather restrained "O Little Town of Bethlehem." One complaint: the players tend to lose the melody line in their efforts to tart up Christmas classics into something experimental. --Jaan Uhelszki

Ted Nugent Rocks on "Deck the Halls"!.......2002-11-22

This is a great companion to Merry Axemas. Although I agree, that at times, some musicians lose sight of the melody in this CD, Ted Nugent does an absolute tour-de-force on "Deck the Halls" without losing the melody at all. WOW--I would have gotten the CD for just this song alone from the Motor City Madman, though all the renditions have their merit.

Creative Liscence for musicians took them a little too far.......2001-12-05

The first CD was great. Almost everyone did a wonderful job in not losing the melody. Melody is the key part in christmas songs. I'm a believer in the fact that if you're going to do a song (where the melody is important)- you should be creative in ways to keep the melody going without playing the same thing over and over again. On the second CD, Al Dimeola, Mr. Wylde, and Stu Hamm all play examples of what I'm talking about. None of them lost the melody of the song. The rest of the tracks on the Vol. 2 CD also have tremendous musical ideas in them, and they sound great until whoever's playing goes off into his own world, and the melody get's trashed. The solos may show that they're gifted musicians, but it's almost like they forget what they're playing. I found the first CD more enjoyable because it had a lot less of the "losing the melody". Regardless, the CD is worth getting for Stu Hamm's track and Zach Wylde's White Chritmas.

This Is The One.......2000-11-11

It seems that I may be among the minority that found this one to be better than the first. This one does rock harder and does have a tendency to take wild rides that may clash at times with the main melody, but isn't that what rock is all about? It never gets boring. I would recommend this one to anybody for the first track alone. Steve Lukather proves himself as a master of the fretboard with his rendition of The Christmas Song. I am a fan of the production on this one as well. Another success for Vai. Pour some eggnog, turn your stereo up to 11 and enjoy the ride!

Weaker.......1999-12-25

The first Vol. is better. This new one is heavier and more industrialized. If you enjoy hard rock, you will easily get stuck into it, but if you are looking for something more predictable, you wont find it here.Its a nice Cd for a Christmas party full of beer!

Predominant metal drone, head-bashing. Where are the blues, jazz players? Love Lukather, Stevens jiggy thangs. Hamm -- yes, more bass players! Too much guitar -- still disappointed Prodcuer Vai won't let the guys sing, use guitar for punctuation. Prefer volume 1.

I am always on the lookout for good power yoga CDs to use at home. So far, this CD (along with Mystic Groove) is the one that makes each home yoga practice motivating and fun. The beat along with the authentic indian instrumentation are mesmerizing (and, yes, it does seem to enter my soul). Based on this CD, I will also try the other Asana CDs (II and III).

This collection has the hypnitic quality that is attractive in eastern music combined with the energy of rock and the mellowing influence of jazz, which make it the perfect background for tasks that require concentration at work or home.

The layout of this approximately 75-minute CD is especially effective for yoga practice. The first track, Mantra, has the right pace and length (15:43) for a good set of Sun Salutations. The second, Black Lotus, has a more flowing sound and brings added energy to move into full practice. This energy is sustained through the following tracks up to the final medatative "Aum" (which is unfortunately a bit short, just over 4 minutes).

An excellent melding of eastern music to western tastes.

Has some great tracks and others not so great. The good tracks emmulate Christmas, while others use it for another jam fest. Not nearly as good as Merry Axemas Vol 1.
