Amazon.com essential recording

It's the most complete single-disc collection of EWF chart rockers, and Greatest Hits' splendid remastering makes one of the major exponents of '70s funk positivity sound sparkling. From the driving "Shining Star" to the syncopated mastery of "September" and "Boogie Wonderland" to the slow-jam heaven of "After the Love Is Gone," this is a reminder of what made the group so special. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-25

If you're an EWF devotee, you have to purchase this CD. It is fabulous! I'm buying a second one for my husband for father's day.

5 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) Probably their best comp, but STILL missing key songs.......2007-03-29

I'm gonna complain a bit here - the live Devotion (off Gratitude, killer studio version made furtherly killer live) and Keep Your Head to the Sky are still missing. Why? Is this one of those stupid cross-label things? Because those are really annoying. And this contains Boogie Wonderland, most likely their worst hit, either that or Let's Groove. Both are disco. Not a coincidence. And they drop All About Love, as well as I'll Write a Song for You. Give me a break! Four of their greatest songs, dropped off a cliff. Splat. Why? Saturday Night's an OK song, but I don't see it as the Best of Earth Wind and Fire. But if you swap those three off, put the four I mentioned on, and keep the rest, you've got the real best of Earth, Wind and Fire. Unlike the 1978 Greatest Hits release, this DOES contain Mighty Mighty, Kalimba Story AND Serpentine Fire, three essentials. Plus it adds After the Love is Gone, a worthy addition to any self-respecting EWF hits collection (or at least any one released after 1978), and their greatest song ever maybe. I'd bet on it. Plus nine of the ten tracks on the '78 release, not coincidentially the nine classics (Got to Get You Into My Life, Fantasy, Can't Hide Love, Getaway, That's the Way of the World, Shining Star, September, Reasons, Sing a Song) - note how they dropped Love Music, which is cool by me because it's just an average song and average songs don't belong on best-ofs, even if they were huge hits (*cough cough Saturday Nite*).
Yes, this is a great intro, but don't stop here. Why? All in All, Spirit, Gratitude, That's the Way of the World and Open Our Eyes are all good picks, that's why. But this is the compilation the band deserved.

5 out of 5 stars That Boogie Woogie Beat!.......2007-03-14

This album is soooo hot! Makes you wanna just jump up on a table and start dancing. (I tried it at work, but they yelled at me!). I am LOUSY at remembering song names, but I recognized a bunch of them. "September" is so hot! and one of my favorites. So is "Boogie Wonderland" (Dance, Ooo ooo oo, Dance, ooo ooo ooo!) (STOP ME! QUICK!) Like I said, most of the album is hot dance-to-me music. There are a few slow songs, like "After the Love Has Gone". 17 tracks at a total running time of a hair over 1 hour 7 minutes.

Don't put this on in the car and get behind a school bus! Torture!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits.......2007-01-04

My sister is a very hard person to buy gifts at Christmas, but last September she mentioned she would like a CD by Earth Wind & Fire. She opened the CD on Christmas eve and insisted we listen to "September" for the next 15 minutes. She was very happy and so was I. I have to admit the CD is a good one and I am ordering a copy for myself.

Like a lot of second-wave funk bands, Earth, Wind & Fire were adept at balancing slickness and rawness. While their albums were occasionally spotty, the outfit achieved truly miraculous moments like the rocking "Shining Star" and the gloriously syncopated "September." (Come to think of it, the screaming guitar of the former was also nicely set off by its rhythmic flow.) In a have-you-never-been-mellow decade, their positivity seemed mostly realistic. With something like their powerhouse transformation of "Got to Get You into My Life"--pulling one of the great Beatles covers out of the awful Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie--they could make even the most churlish listener believe anything was possible. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The "Hybrid Theory" of its day!.......2007-07-25

A great inclusion to what is mostly a Classic Rock collection. Like Blood, Sweat, and Tears before them and maybe Chicago, but jazzy soul. Underappreciated during the Disco years, this time-tested material still sounds GREAT! Of much greater interest than merely the Soul or Jazz audiencences, it's one fine album!

4 out of 5 stars Most of the best, but where's the early stuff?.......2007-03-29

This is a rough guess, but I'd say there are about a trillion EWF comps on the market, mostly either generic hit collections or tacky theme roundups. This is actually one of their better comps, as it contains MOST of their best songs up until 1978. Not all, though. I won't even get into the sorely missed deep cuts, because some obvious ones were skipped: Head to the Sky, Devotion (especially that great live version off of Gratitude), Kalimba Story, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty, I'll Write a Song for You and It's All About Love are just radio staples, why aren't they included? (I would've complained about lacking After the Love is Gone, but it turns out that came out a year after this comp was released, so I can't really). Yes, I understand vinyl was restrictive at the time, but in these days of CD those songs could've been tacked on as bonus tracks (one of the few instances I'd support the use of bonus tracks), but instead they tack on these stupid, useless Megamix things... yeah. Fact is, you can't sum up the career of a band at the height of their powers in ten tracks, no matter how good nine of those ten are. I could've done without Love Music - it's certainly not BAD, and they could've picked far worse. But I don't see what it has over It's All About Love, Head to the Sky, Devotion, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty or Kalimba Story.
But hey... this has September! September's a classic, man! And this was the first time it was put on a studio album, for whatever that's worth. Same with their great cover of The Beatles' Got to Get You Into My Life - I'm a Beatle freak, but I must say, this cover beats even their original. And there's plenty of fine funk stuff: Shining Star, the aforementioned September and Got to Get You Into My Life, Singasong and Getaway, as well as some wonderfully amazing ballads like Reasons, Fantasy, Can't Hide Love and That's the Way of the World, so this makes for a fitting intro for the group. But don't make the mistake I did in thinking this is all you need - it was about three years after buying this before I finally picked up an EWF studio album, and of course I had waited about three years too long. Don't stop here - I recommend That's the Way of the World, Gratitude, All in All, Open Our Eyes and Spirit as well - but this is good.

5 out of 5 stars Best of EWF.......2006-08-01

Does it get any better than this? Check the songs before you buy another CD, some of these songs are duplicated on another CD. Still, great sounds.

4 out of 5 stars Most Of Their Best Songs Are Here!!!.......2006-01-03

I really hadn't been a fan of EWF up to a few years ago. But, once listening to them...I can really appreciate the funk/jazz/disco/fusion sound that they have. The top songs on this one are Got To Get You Into My Life, Getaway, That's The Way Of The World, and September. Though people try to remake their songs...I believe that most of their best songs are here! And that EWF play them better than anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting Music For Festive Occasion.......2005-01-04

Remastered Earth Wind and Fire collection with the nice addition of Mega Mix ones (In Japan megamix became huge hit a few years back) is a must-have if you love great music and melodic high toned chorus. They created zenith of rhythm and blues music with melodies and it influenced rock music a lot.
After around huge hit of SEPTEMBER they got on the bandwagon of disco frenzy but LOVE MUSIC, THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, CAN'T HIDE LOVE are the song of pure ethreal rhythm and blues somewhat like Stylistics. FANTASY is one of the most favorites among Japanese yogaku(western music) fans. MEGA MIX tracks are the reasons why you must buy this particular one. It's so fantastic. Well compressing what they are truly great.

Recommended for wide variety of music fans.

4 out of 5 stars Quiet Fire - Roberta Flack.......2007-01-03

This disc finds Roberta Flack at her peak -- flush with her initial success, and building on that with an album that combines soul and jazz feeling. It captures the times, employing themes of mass movement as well as individual passion. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars As good a smusic gets.......2006-02-28

Roberta Flack is as good as music gets and any chance to hear her sing is worthwhile. This album is more than worthwhile. Listen to "Will You Still Love Me Tommorow" and see if you can think of anything more haunting or beautiful. All the music here is supurb but that one song should be enough to satisfy anyone. This is an album you'll be sorry if you miss.

5 out of 5 stars Completing a triumvirate of great Roberta Flack albums.......2002-07-26

"Quiet Fire", Roberta Flack's third solo album, has been unfairly overshadowed by the incandescent "First Take" and its masterful follow up, "Chapter Two". Unfairly because it is in every way an equal partner to its two luminous predecessors in constituting the third instalment of a triumvirate of great Roberta Flack albums. Significantly, even its immediate successor, the excellent "Killing Me Softly", doesn't quite measure up artistically with anything she did before that. Just as "Chapter Two" surprised with inspired covers of familiar standards, "Quiet Fire" serves up majestic versions of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water", Goffin & King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and the Gibb brothers' "To Love Somebody" which Nina Simone had a huge UK hit with in 1969. Unlike Aretha Franklin whose penchant for turning melodies inside out is legendary, Roberta's approach with a song is more conservative. She may slow it down a tad but always tries to preserve the melody and the cadence of the song. What she does is use her peerless phrasing and majestic performance to transform a song into something precious and personal. Listening to Roberta's voice build and rise above the piano is akin to a religious experience and it can't get more seriously churchy than "Go Up Moses", the opening track, which has Roberta feverishly incanting over a racuous rhythmn. Continuing in the same vein is "Sunday and Sister Jones", featuring the album's most powerful moments and a tour de force performance from Roberta that has to be heard to be believed. Winding up are sensitive treatments of "Let Them Talk" and the Dinah Washington standard "Sweet Bitter Love" which are at least equal, in my opinion, to the best versions ever recorded, including Aretha's in the case of the latter song. "Quiet Fire" is indeed the middle name of Roberta Flack and the sound of velvet melting...

5 out of 5 stars Roberta's best... by far! And that's sayin something.......2002-04-27

Roberta Flack is as always incomparable but this one is just absolutely amazing. And I loved both of her earlier albums and thought that each of them was pretty close to perfect. But without question this album is the pinnacle of her talent and emotion.

Sweet Bitter Love is what I categorize as an A++ cut. Not just A+ but A double-plus. So much beauty, pain, and irony all in one cut. Just incredible! And personally I love Sunday and Sister Jones and To Love Somebody (A+) in and of themselves but some nights i'll play Sweet Bitter Love 3 or 4 times a night.

Cover to cover. High quality. Beauty and feeling. Depth and simplicity.

Just an out and out winner!

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, sumptuous Ro Flack...........2000-03-23

...this is a listening experience like no other, Roberta Flack's "Quiet Fire". If her "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "Sweet Bitter Love" doesn't move you, then maybe your life is actually passing you by. Slow down and savor this one, it is truly a gift.

Earth, Wind & Fire retained their hit-making touch into the '80s, as this sequel to their 1978 best-of makes clear with "Let's Groove" (1981) and "Turn On (The Beat Box)" (1988). Still, the disc concentrates on their '70s work, from the early "Mighty Mighty" to the later, slightly slicker "Boogie Wonderland" and "After the Love Is Gone." And those who can't get enough of "Fantasy," which appeared on volume 1, will be glad to see it repeated here. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2006-09-04

back in the day I mainly bought this for the fact that "Love's Holiday" was on it. always had to collect EWF Albums back in the day. I wasn't feeling there WHitney Houston lite cut "Turn on the Beatbox" which was a Poor Man's "Let's Groove". alot of the tracks on here have the 70's Greatness of there Peak&prime time form. EWF along with the Isley brothers are my all time favorite bands.

4 out of 5 stars Has Love's Holiday On It.......2006-01-31

I bought this cd for Love's Holiday, a song I have loved for years but could never find. The other songs are good too!

3 out of 5 stars I Am Surprised At All Of The Negative Reviews!!!.......2006-01-03

I own both Best of CD's by EWF. I am glad that I do. This one completes what I feel are some of their best songs!!! I am surprised at all of the negative reviews! Maybe I missed something??? My favorites on this one are Turn On (The Beat Box), Let's Groove, After The Love Is Gone, and Devotion. I wasn't that much of a fan of EWF till recently...so, maybe they are what I have missed all along.

2 out of 5 stars The Two Stars Are For Presentation.......2005-09-01

Earth,Wind & Fire's first greatest hits album is so musically well constructed it's almost worth those who own the albums already to have it.The same isn't true with this one-tune's like "Love's Holiday","Serpentine Fire","Mighty Mighty" and "Boogie Wonderland" are classics but the overall album doesn't flow together half as well as the first. The juxtaposition of era's is jarring too-the production and style of some of the songs have too much of a range and makes it seem well....dated in parts.Better to purchase the chronological and extensive 'Eternal Dance' box set-it has ALL the hits in the proper order and is frankly better mastered.

5 out of 5 stars Love's Holiday is encluded which is strangely absent on some other collections.......2005-07-26

Minus September and Reasons you get the other great great songs.

MUST HAVE for Love's Holiday.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S EWF. THE ALBUM IS GENIUS, OF COURSE...........2007-07-29

The album opens with "Let me talk">>>a very very cool opening tune with interesting words to go along. It runs right into the next tune, "Turn it into something Good">>>A very bright & beautiful song. Then, an even smoother segway into the brilliant "Pride">>>this song hits you hard and never lets up! The next tune is the sweet & smooth ballad "You". If you love "Love's Holiday", "Be Ever Wonderful", "Can't Hide Love" or "Wait", this tune will not grab your heart any less. "Sparkle" is the next brilliant song>>>comes as a gift from the same land called "Fantasy" (from All 'N All). A sweet ride. (pay close attention to the guitars on this one-Al is on the left speaker of your stereo & Johnny is on your right-this may be true with most EWF tunes, but this is one of the songs that really allows it to be heard a bit clearer). "Back on the Road" is awesome! There is obvious originality with the song. But, it sort of gives you an idea of what an EWF/JIMI HENDRIX collaboration would have sounded like! "Song In My Heart" just flows nicely & there goes those harmonies and amazing horns again-great! "You Went Away" is pretty heart breaking lyric wise, and I'm sure many would relate>>> Very nice ballad. "And Love Goes On" is a very intelligent up tempo love song. Ah, "Sailaway" is next>>>just sit back relax, listen & chill. "Take It To The sky" puts many a thought into your head and carries you to all sorts of areas. "Win Or Lose" has awesome guitar riffs & great string arrangements. "Share Your Love" is very positive/feel good tune. "In Time" grabs you and you'll want to hear it again! The finale & title track>>>>"FACES" is next>>>Let me tell you somethin'>>>the musicianship, timing, tempo, words & professionalism of this brilliant tune will blow your mind. Whenever you play it, you'll hear something you didn't hear before. Just as genius as>>"Zanzibar", "Spasmodic Movements", "Africano", "New World Symphony" or "Runnin'". If you only own "That's The Way Of The World", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "All 'N All", "Best Of" and "I Am", then, you're either NOT a true fan or have been living under a very large rock! You must own this album/CD!! "FACES>>>PLACES>>>RACES!!"

5 out of 5 stars FACES...Truly Progressive Soul.......2007-07-11

Contrary to popular belief, FACES was NOT a decline in greatness or creativity for the elements; it is not any less of a classic than say, "That's the way of the World"; more often than not, the masses are lead and fed what is "deemed" popular and if a successful group or artist sees a decline in sales it is attributed to the artist and not the fickle fans or lack of promotion by the record company that would rather have assembly line hits.

Fans often want to dictate to or make artists conform to their idea of what direction they should go in after having enormous success. Certainly a band of this stature would not conform to any record company or fans who want to hear "I AM II" or a rehashing of "That's the way"...

So at this point in EWF successful career, a lot of world touring had been done; Faces was an appeal & statement to the masses worldwide for universal love; how could a record with that kind of message be a failure? EWF was making truly progressive Soul music.

FACES at first listen sounds very much like vintage EWF, but the speed and pace of the band at this point had gelled so perfectly, and those horns was sharper than ever.(Check the instrumental title track 'Faces') However, a lot of guest musicians,& added strings arrangements enhanced the sound to an almost 'airy lite' feeling. The same sound was beginning to surface toward the last few tracks on I AM, the previous release.

But if you listen closely you'll hear the vintage EWF, the kalimba interlude that brings in the hard driving 'Pride', just as powerful as 'Mighty Mighty'; the strong vocals of 'Reece' on 'Turn it into something good';the soaring falsetto of Phillip B. on 'Win or Lose' and the eclectic mix of styles that shows a group that was cutting edge, yet never compromising their root sound.

FACES was the culmination of the sounds EWF had been making all during the 70s; the progressive soul would continue with their next release RAISE!, that included their biggest hit 'Let's Groove', which returns to the hard driving Soul EWF has always been known for.

It's 'ALL N' ALL' GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars EWF rocks!!.......2007-05-25

One of my favorite EWF works of all time - perhaps one of their most under rated albums ever! Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars For REAL EWF fans!!!.......2007-03-18

Let me talk and say that this album(cd) is by far my favorite of all time. I was 12 when it came out. My dad was a musician and loved EWF. He took me to see them in 1978 and at 10 I was blown away by the music and the style. Then this came out. I still have my dad's album version, have bought the cd(an import only at the time) and just bought it on itunes, which FINALLY put it up, YES!!
I think everybody has that person that they know they would just be speechless to meet. I work in the radio industry and have met a lot of people too big to mention. Maurice White is my absolute hero. I don't know how I would react to meeting him. It's tragic what he is going thru physically, and I only wish the best for him.
To this album...the last 26 years has afforded the ability to have a different favorite at one time or another. And Love Goes On was the first fav, then You, cuz it applied to me at the time, then You Went Away, for the same reason(same girl, lol).
But right now, it's easily the title track. God, when I wanna take in a real percussive/brass jam, you can't do much better!
I think for the reasons previously stated, the album didn't do well. That shouldn't and doesn't take away the absolute need for someone to have Faces. If you just like EWF or just like music, GET THIS!!

5 out of 5 stars The "forgotten" album/cd!.......2007-03-14

This is the best EWF CD ever! Uptempo, peppy, the BEST horn licks (song, Let me Talk!) and Maurice and Phillip working it out on vocals!! This was a double album that had no charting songs or hits but wow was it the best listening experience. Did radio miss this one? In their live show none of these songs were ever performed....wonder why? Disco was dying when this was released maybe no chances were taken to explore it. First song to the last....LOVE IT! The best band ever, a cut above the rest. Even though Maurice doesn't tour with them today, he is missed.....sorry Phil can't handle all the material and the group has dwindled. Favorites: "In Time" "Back on the Road" "Turn it into Something Good" "Song in my Heart".
A must have for any EWF fan!

Pepper movie--they could make even the most churlish listener believe anything truly was possible. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A superb memory from 1978.......2001-10-10

My favourite LP from 78, now remastered. Fantastic. What an army EW&F were!

4 out of 5 stars Sure to please the loyal EWF fan.......1999-06-05

Earth, Wind and Fire could do no wrong in 1978, the year this album was originally released. They had just come off the major success of three huge albums, "That's The Way of the World," "Spirit," and "All 'n All." This greatest hits collection was destined to be a smash from the day it was released.

Check out the funk swing of "Got to Get You Into My Life." Featured in the disastrous "Sgt. Pepper's" movie, this song is one of the few bright spots from the film. "Fantasy" is classic Phil Bailey, while "That's The Way of the World" and "Shining Star" are the cornerstones of the EWF legacy. "September" and "Singasong" find EWF at their upbeat best. "Can't Hide Love" is a highly underrated EWF gem.

The only real clunker here is the grating "Love Music." EWF is often wrongfully bashed for sounding "too pop" at times; however, the criticism is justified in this instance.

Whether new to the Fire, or a longtime fan, this is a must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE POWERLIGHT CONTINUES TO SHINE.......2007-07-19

What are all these silly reviews seeking to analyze EWF's music, when the majority of most people posting here aren't even musicians? Everybody's a damn critic, but couldn't blow a whistle, let alone compose music.

Powelight contines EWF's stance as an independent band that refused to be dictated to by the ever increaing greed of their coroporate record company who wanted 'hits' instead of true artisitc creativity. Maurice & the Group had capitulated after the wonderful double up 'FACES' and delivered 'RAISE!' with a solid 'hit' 'Let's Groove'. But they were not about to continue to churn out mindless hit records; their motto has always been about good positive music.

POWERLIGHT is a laid back R&B groove from start to finish, with the same meticulous horn section & powerhouse vocals they were known for, but this time it was mostly over mid-tempo R&B using the popular sound of the time; the synthesizer bass and vocoder usage; which was very popular in the early '80s and they did this without compromising their overall style. The futuristic speeded up horns that introduces POWERLIGHT might lead you to believe that this offering is going to be a fast paced new sound from the Group moving at the speed of light, but that light is love and 'Fall in love with me' quickly sets the tone of the whole CD. The groove continues with 'Spread your Love',a funky cut with EWF using the steel drum for the first time. 'Side by Side' slowed the beat down even more, but keeps the groove going with some nice vocal harmony. Philip offers his signature ballad on 'Straight from the heart' which recalls previous songs like 'I'll write a song for you'. 'Speed of Love', 'Freedom of Choice' which is probably the most political song EWF has ever made, which I think was a vague statement to their record company about being force to churn out hits instead of being allowed to be the great band that they are without dictation, 'Something Special' & 'Hearts to Heart', which replays the speeded up horn intro at the beginning of 'Fall in Love' at regular tempo, keeps the R&B groove going, with the now classic interludes dispersed throughout.

The CD closes with 'Miracles', the standard for EWF, if you are familiar with any of their CDs, most of them close with an uplifting ballad. Now I must address the same 'dis' a few people keep aiming at the closing of this song; the children that are supposedly singing off key at the end of the song and it 'ruins' the record. Now do you suppose that a band known for otherworldly harmony would not notice the off key singing of children on their own recording? The point is that sometimes kids do sing off key, but if you understand the message of the song and listen and realize that the kids are singing from the heart, then it doesn't matter that they're off key. I'm sure Maurice realized this when making the decision to leave the ending as it is. So quit hating and enjoy the music for what it is.

Furthermore, comparing all of EWF albums to each other is not an accurate way to review their recordings, let alone any artist with a career that has enjoyed longevity. EWF had much more freedom in the earlier days of 'Open Our Eyes', 'That's the Way of the world', 'Spirit', 'All N All', & 'I AM'. If one was to view each of their recordings, taking into consideration when they were recorded & the atmosphere, then even the later recordings of the '80s &'90s could be better appreciated. And really, even their most unpopular records are miles ahead of anything that's being put out today.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best work of E W & F, but still...........2007-01-12

Not the best work of E W & F, which is one of my favourites bands of the 70-ties. But still, not the best work of E W & F is always worth listening to.

They peaked in the seventies with at least 6 wonderfull albums. In the early eighties, when this album was made, they were already on their return but still, for a fan and a collector of the work of this band like me, you have to have Powerlight. I like Straight from the Heart and Miracles best. Both songs are as spriritual as their best work and have magnificent background singing.

Praise to E W & F and Maurice White!

5 out of 5 stars One of their best.......2005-07-21

All the songs on this album are strong. I think it's one of the best EWF albums. The only flaw I see is the awful singing by children at the end of Miracles. If they had sang on key, it may have been acceptable. But, this is just at the very end of the song, so I don't let it bother me too much.

4 out of 5 stars LET IT SHINE!.......2004-12-30

Just about everytime EW&F broke new ground in the mainstream from any album, their follow-up release would attempt to pull back in an effort to recapture some of the group's true essence. Spirit, Faces and this album are all perfect examples. Powerlight is the successor to 1981's Raise!, which was a commercial comeback album of sorts for EW&F. The incredibly glossy acoustics, futuristic sound effects and formulaic rhythms that made Raise! a success were combined with the meatier instrumental and vocal contributions that Raise! was missing, laying an intriguing framework that I'm sure the "shiny suit men" thought couldn't miss...

"Fall In Love With Me", the lead-off single, while dance-floor ready, immediately sets a laid-back tone and clarifies EW&F's direction for this album as R&B, one of their many mastered genres. Unfortunately for the pop fans gained from Raise!, this cut would be the closest EW&F would come to sticking their necks out for them on Powerlight. Hey, sucks to be them! Because in terms of R&B/dance cuts, this album is brimming over with jewels like the hard-driving, vocoder-assisted "Spread Your Love", the breezy "The Speed Of Love", and the funked up "Hearts To Heart". The ballads are near-mint, with the gorgeous "Side By Side", "Straight From The Heart" which at first sounds like a re-re-hashing of "After The Love..." but finds its own identity, and the lullaby-like "Miracles". Yes, those kids sound real, real bad at the end, but if they just stopped the music beforehand, it might not have been taken so seriously.

Personally, I love this album, even as underrated and un-classic as it may be. The beefed up bass and high-impact vocals actually helped this album achieve a harder edge than the immediately preceding albums, without having to move 100 miles an hour or having to reinvent the wheel creatively, as was done on Raise! This album is very much EW&F, but the following changes led them in the wrong direction:

- Starting with Raise!, The Emotions became mainstays in the band, guest starring more often and contributing background vocals more frequently. On Powerlight, you can hear them on just about every song. By the next album, Wanda & Co. would take over the background and actual group member background vocals would be all but absent.

- The computer effects, in addition to stagnating musical creativity, were also being used to distort live vocal and instrumental performance on Powerlight, which should not have to be done with this group, which is known for its skills in both areas.

Anyway, you do not need to be a hardcore fan to appreciate this tight package. Powerlight takes EW&F's nuances of the '80s and offers them in rare form back to their core audience. If you already own this album and don't see its value, give EW&F's following release a listen, then clutch your shining Powerlight just a little bit tighter.

4 out of 5 stars What's heard when you light a candle after the lights go out.......2004-06-16

The first time I heard this album was when I was about the age of 4, so i'll try not to let my nostolgia skew my review too much. I get the idea that to some fans and critics, this album may not be considered so much of a classic...but it certainly is my personal favorite...and for the exception of that last minute of the track "Miracles" it's nearly flawless.

I think this album may sound a bit dated to some, due to the production work, it doesn't have the "timeless" feel on many of EWF's earlier releases...but there is something unique about "Powerlight' and that is the consistency of the rhythm along with the uplifing/light in the dark/glowing theme...almost a bit visual.

In my mind the sound of "Powerlight" is EWF catching up or reacting to the cold, electronic sound of the early eighties...but they create it such a subtle way, without losing the soul and their roots. A few of the uptempo tracks (Fall In Love With Me, Spread Your Love, Hearts To Heart) despite the synthesizers, (and I believe a drum machine was used) have big productions in the typical EWF style, but a little different this time...I can only describe it as sounding a bit more like Quincy Jones meets Juan Atkins, or Herbie Hancock.

Unfortunetly, the next release of the same year (Electric Universe) went further into the fads and trends of '82, '83...which saw Maurice White losing his steam...the EWF's lineup changed, which may have effected the focus later on...but i feel "Powerlight" doesn't in (any way) show that...to me this was their last great consistant album, and pretty much marks a line between the old EWF and what came after...ironically, kinda reminds me of what happened with Prince in the late 1980s after the release of "Lovesexy", before his lineup changed again...but that album ended up being one of his best recordings ever.

The standout tracks are the catchy but complex "Fall In Love With Me", the midtempo "Side By Side", and your good 'ol EWF ballad "Miracles"...My guilty pleasure is "Hearts to Heart" I love hearing the 2 choruses go back and fourth organic-like, it closes the album in the most perfect way.

I wouldn't reccomend "Powerlight" for anyone who may wanna make this their first EWF purchase, although it wouldn't be a bad start...but I think this album would sit better with the people who are already fans of EWF...there are some strange moments...but nothing that ruins it.

5 out of 5 stars Another 80s classic!.......2007-07-31

Though I've always fully recognised her talent, I've never been a huge Teena Marie fan. (For instance, I like songs like "Behind The Groove" and "It Must Be Magic" but not enough to buy them. And though it was one of her most popular songs, I could never get into "Square Biz"). But I've always loved this album. Or, more accurately, I've always loved the opener, "I Need Your Lovin'". The way the tune starts off with that solo bass line before the rhythm section and strings kick in, has fascinated me from the first day I heard it back when it was first released. For some reason or the other though, I never got round to buying the album.

Well, better late than never and even though I'm 27 years late, I'm totally happy and satisfied now that I have it. "Young Love", "First Class Love" and the title tune are all great songs, well played and well sung. Credit to the lady, who wrote and produced the whole album herself. "Chains" I can take or leave but I'm rewarded fully towards the end of the album with the sweetly jazzy "You Make Love Like Springtime", "Tune In Tomorrow" and "You Make Love Like Springtime (Reprise)". As I didn't own this album on vinyl I am unable to report whom the brilliant musicians were, who played on it. Once again, (as with Grover Washington, Jr's Feels So Good, which I reviewed recently), Motown has seen it fit not to include this vital information on the inner sleeve notes. I wonder what they're thinking?

Anyway, there's great singing and great music on this great album. It doesn't sound dated at all so you don't really have to be a great fan of music from the 80s to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen....Lady T!.......2007-06-12

I wish I was alive when this album first came out...but here's to making up for lost time! I really can't understand why Teena doesn't get half of the acclaim she is worthy of. This is definitely one of her best albums, and I can't say that any song on here needed to be skipped. The only setting I have my IPod stuck on with this album is "REPEAT." "Irons In The Fire," "Young Love," "You Make Love Like Springtime," and "Tune In Tomorrow" are album highlights that showcases what Teena does best-blowing away the competition. Long live the T!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Teena's Motown albums........2007-05-31

This was Teena's best Motown release in every way. The title track and the wistful ballad "Young Love" are among Teena's most emotive ballads but the entire CD is great from start to finish. The huge hit "I Need Your Lovin'" is the perfect marriage of Disco and Soul--it sounds fresh to this day. "Irons In The Fire" was Teena Marie's best Motown CD and is a must-buy for all who love passionate and heartfelt Soul Music.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2007-01-06

If you don't have this Cd, you are missing out. This cd is a musicians dream. Funky rythems with a little jazz swing. Unbelievable. A MUST HAVE.

Album Description

QUIET FIRE marks the first meeting of three remarkable artists, each distinguished for shaping (and reshaping) the face of contemporary world music. The woodwinds of master flautist Gary Stroutsos; William Eaton's handcrafted stringed instruments; pan-global percussion by Will Clipman—disparate elements fused together in a meditative celebration of newfound common ground.

More than an exchange between musical minds, however, QUIET FIRE represents a new nexus of sound. Koto-harp guitar, Chinese bamboo Xiao flute, water drums, udu and other exotic instruments don't just mingle; they merge. The result: earfuls of open sky and whispering willows, a natural sound to unwind the mind and pacify the soul.

Attuned to the soothing hum of well-being, QUIET FIRE is a musical journey impelled by an innate sensitivity. To luxuriate in its depth is to gaze into the reflecting pool of the heart. The view will ignite your imagination and restore your spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the Spa.......2004-09-07

This is just about the most sensual sound track ever recorded. Stroutsos will take the Xiao from Chinese antiquity to bedrooms everywhere. (Yes, you can meditate to it as well.) Even if you have heard Eaton before, you have never heard him like this --Koto-harp guitar, incredible! He balances Stroutsos perfectly while Clipman glues the trio together with everything from Water Drums to Udu. These three have made a unique contribution to world music that will live for years to come. This is a Grammy lock. If these guys ever play near you, it would be worth driving three states just to hear them. In the meantime, buy this CD.

Quiet Fire is a recording so tight, so pure and so beautifully gorgeous sounding - Stroutsos, Eaton and Clipman have produced a lyrical vision that shines from the mountaintop. This unique recording of love compels one to listen over and over in order to absorb the elegant and sophisticated nuances bouncing off the dynamic interplay between these three masters. White Swan Records is to be commended for the superb packaging and production. An evergreen title for years to come, Quiet Fire is deserving of a Grammy Nomination in the World Music category. We hope to hear more from this excellent acoustic jazz trio.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Relaxation.......2004-08-12

This CD is a fusion of a variety of cultural sounds. It is intriguing as well as deeply soothing. It allows the listener to float through the melodic variations of this blend of flute, percussion and guitar. Just when you think you have it figured out it twists and turns and develops another thematic mode. Truly unique and comforting. I'd recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2004-08-11

This is a wonderful new CD - one of the best of 2004. I am amazed that this is the first time these three very talented musicians - Stroutsos, Clipman, and Eaton - have recorded together. Let's support the genre - buy lots of their CDs and hope they record another soon. Each plays wonderfully and the range and blending of instruments is unique: Koto-harp guitar, Chinese bamboo Xiao flute, water drums, udu and other exotic instruments. The music has a great range in tempos and moods. I've seen Gary Stroutsos in concert - WOW! He is fabulous - I hope the three will go on tour soon. Thanks for a totally enjoyable CD that is one of the best in my large world music collection!!!
